If you haven't read the previous books, I would. There is a lot of history and backstory on some of the characters so I think to get this one properly I would read the previous books. Tuva has landed the job of deputy editor for the local newspaper. As usual Tuva is an outsider even though we come across people who she has known in previous books/adventures. A resident is murdered, decapitated and a festival that isn't spoken of aloud is coming, Tuva isn't prepared for the dangers ahead nor the debauchery but she needs to investigate the story and get the residents to open up.
So if you don't know Tuva she is feisty, quite fearless, is hearing impaired and a new relationship with Noora. whilst this isn't a firm favourite for me there is no denying Dean writes and creates fantastic tension, fear, creepy, eerie atmospheres and scenes.
It is a busy book, lots going on, not for the faint hearted nor easily offended. The book has quite a few dark scenes and I think anyone would be hard pressed to guess where the stories are going. Kept on your toes and tense breath holding (at points) and you should have the next book on stand by at the ready, 3.5/5 for me.
Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience
Another unpopular opinion here.
I requested this before I realised it was part of a series that I hadn't read. Not a bad thing, I thought. I can tell readers if it can be read as a standalone, if the previous stories are explained enough for the reader to catch up where they left off.
I have to say, it was harder to follow for me, I didn't know who Tuva was as a character and I certainly struggled initially. I personally think I'd be better starting the series from book 1.
That said, Will Dean wrote The Last Thing to Burn which is one of my favourite thrillers of recent years. He can write seriously dark books! That one damaged me. So as far as the plot of Bad Apples goes, it is a very gripping book but not on the same scale as The Last Thing in my opinion.
Would I read book 5? Possibly, but I would have to read books 1-3 first.
Thank you to Netgalley and OneWorld Publications for the arc of Bad Apples by the sensational Author of the last thing to burn... Will Dean.
5 STARS- HIGHLY RECOMMEND, GRIPPING, HOOKING SENSATIONAL EDGE OF SEAT READ!
Follows a murder in the town of Visberg, when a resident is found decapitated, The Cultish Hilltop community celebrates Pan Night after apple harvest and the race against time for Tuva Moodyson!
I love Tulva and the bleak setting. This is a cracking read with plenty of twists to keep me entertained. Looking forward to the next.
Will Dean has done it again! Bad Apples is a fantastic addition to the Tuva Moodyson series and possibly the creepiest one yet. A book which opens with the discovery of a decapitated body in a foggy forest sets you up for the chills which will follow. Odd townsfolk, a mysterious (and indulgent in all ways) celebration called Pan Night and rotten apples (full of wasps - WHY WASPS) everywhere give an even bigger clue that Tuva is in deep with this case and her life in danger.
I was delighted to see the troll sisters had a pop up shop, I don't think I'd be making a purchase though.
The author's descriptive style will drop you right into the heart of Tuva's world and I promise you will be gripped, horrified and left open mouthed!!
Easily read as a standalone but why would you deprive yourself of the whole series?!
Dark, atmospheric and ideal to read in front of a roaring fire! Small town Sweden with a big dark secret that is investigated by Tuva, the deaf journalist created by the talented Will Dean. The fourth in the series, each story takes on a life if its own as Tuva settles into a new job after the death of her mother. Mysterious deaths begin to happen and she is on hand to investigate at some risk to herself
Engrossing with twists and turns that will keep you guessing!
I would like to thank Netgalley and Oneworld Publications for an advance copy of Bad Apples, the fourth novel to feature Swedish journalist Tuva Moodyson.
Fabulous, dark, spooky, creepy and so good. Cannot I recommend this book enough? A must-read.
I’m a huge fan of Will Dean and thought his debut novel was absolutely brilliant. His heroine, Tuva, is an excellent character with her hearing aids and intense desire to explore every mystery to the end. I didn’t enjoy this one as much as Wills earlier books but he is always an incredible author I happily follow with great enthusiasm.
Bad Apples is the fourth book in the Tuva Moodyson series from the pen of Will Dean. If you thought Gavrik, the town where journalist Tuva Moodyson has been promoted to deputy editor of the newspaper Gavrik Posten, was creepy, you clearly haven’t been to Visberg, a neighbouring town that takes creepy to a whole new level.
When a headless body is found in the forest outside Visberg by Tuva after she hears the screams of a woman deep in the forest, it is identified as Arne Gustav Persson, a plumber from Visberg. As the investigation progresses, Tuva finds herself in Visberg as the locals celebrate Pan Night, an ancient, sexually charged adult celebration shortly before Halloween, and filled with debauchery and menace.
The titular apples have fallen from the trees in the town square, with the smell of rotten and decomposing apples pervading through the town of Visberg.
I loved the moments Tuva spent with Noor, and I loved her connection with her young neighbour Dan, who was a new addition in Tuva’s world.
This was a spooky addition to the series with very dark, intense moments, and the return of the troll-making sisters Cornelia and Alice, whose trolls are popular in Visberg so they open a pop-up shop in the town square for Halloween.
Will Dean’s talent is to keep you on edge the entire time you are reading, and Bad Apples will definitely do that, with some heart in mouth moments that will have you gasping. It is next level creepy, and I think I won’t want to store any of my belongings in a storage unit any time soon! If you haven’t read any of the series yet, make it a priority, you won’t regret it!
Another outing for Tuva Moodyson, journalist, now deputy editor of a provincial paper. She hears screams in the forest and investigates to find a headless corpse.. The body is of a resident of an isolated hilltop town with some very odd characters and goings on. The more Tuva looks into it the more people she finds who may have had a reason to do the murder. Then it seems that the killer is after Tuva too. Brilliant pacey thriller with a tens ending that will set your teeth on edge.
Tuva Moodyson has returned to Gavrick as a deputy editor of the paper. She is happy to be near friends & the woman she loves. Tuva stops on the road through the forest when she sees an accident, she finds a woman covered in blood a short while later. She is beside a headless corpse. The victim lives in Visberg- a very strange local village! Following the story of the murder she finds herself spending time there & experiences Pan night. A very odd festival that is decidedly creepy! As Tuva investigates further she leads herself into danger. It's hard to say much more without giving away secrets. However this is one of the most atmospheric & creepy books I've read in a while- perfect for a winter's read.
I read the first in this series & loved it but seem to have missed out on Books 2 & 3. However I'll be looking out for the next one. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.
When a man is found decapitated, Tuva begins questioning the residents of Visburg where she has just started her new job as editor for the local paper. In the days leading up to Halloween, she begins to find links in the case to Pan Night, a local variation on the traditional celebrations which coincides with the apple harvest. But, by delving into all of the town’s secrets, will Tuva be able to solve the case or is she just making herself the next target?
This is the fourth book in the Tuva Moodyson series and it’s no secret that I was already #TeamTuva. Bad Apples had a much darker feel to it that the previous stories which I loved, and the tension towards the end made it impossible to put down. This series has the most amazing mix of unusual characters and it definitely makes me want to go and explore more of Sweden.
Also, I still can’t get over that last chapter! I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since I finished reading!
Is not a secret that Will Dean is my favourite writer and I believe that he cannot disappoint. With Bad Apples he just did it again.
The story is a creepy, atmospheric thriller with a few gory details that will definitely keep you on edge throughout the book. I was totally engulfed in it and I didn’t want to put it down.
The book belongs to a series but can be read as stand alone without any issues. The main character is a very driven journalist that finds herself investigating murders and getting caught up in them.
WD’s writing is remarkable. The descriptions bring the setting alive and transport you into the scene. The story flaws and it’s turns leaves you holding your breath.
A MUST READ
Ooh I do enjoy a Will Dean book and always look forward to new ones coming out. Bad Apples is another creepy, dark and addictive read from this talented author which, in my opinion, is his best book yet.
It was great to be back with Tuva and the characters from previous books. It was really evident how much Tuva had grown in this book and I like the new, confident more street wise Tuva we see in this book. She’s definitely a very brave lady as there were a few situations in this book I’d have run away, screaming from. There are some familiar faces from previous books including the fabulous troll sisters who I was pleased to see make an appearance. There are also some new faces which helped bring a new element to the story and were fun to learn more about.
The author has included some fascinating facts about Halloween, or Pan night in Sweden, traditions which make English traditions seem rather tame. It was interesting to learn more about them and these help to create some of the atmosphere and intrigue in the book which I thought was clever. Through these Tuva finds herself in some unusual situations which were a bit of an eye-opener to be honest.
Overall I really enjoyed this book which is perfect for reading on the run up to Halloween. It’s very twisty with the book often going in directions I wasn’t expecting. There’s lots of misdirection too and I couldn’t figure out who was guilty which I always find really fun. The ending was brilliant and I can’t wait to read more from this fabulous series.
Huge thanks to Anne Cater for inviting me onto the blog tour and to Point Blank for my copy of this book. Highly recommended!
Tuva Moodyson is a great character. I've read Dark Pines and Last Thing to Burn before. This is creepy, atmospheric, well crafted and sucks you in. Not fast paced I have to say but just enough to keep you turning the pages wondering how it is all going to end. Very enjoyable
5 Stars
I should have known better. I will learn from this. Next time I pick up a Will Dean book I will think to myself 'What fresh hell will be unleashed into my mind and am I ready for it?'.
It's my own fault isn't it, after The Last Thing to Burn I only have myself to blame for going back for more.
Bad Apples is one of a series of books featuring deaf reporter Tuva Moodyson and in my opinion the series has got better and tighter with every book.
This is a series like no other and I can only assume that TV companies are arguing among themselves over who will win the rights to produce it. I for one cannot wait to see the depravity, the heart stopping fear, the bleakness and vulnerability of anyone caught in the pine trees and as for the shenanigans from pan night, well.
I won't be watching the bit in the train carriage though. Nope. No thanks. As I should have remembered from The Last Thing to Burn, Will Dean is a bad bad man!
Albeit a seriously brilliant writer.

NO SPOILERS
I’d not read any of the Tuva Moodyson series before (this is Book 4) but I had read Will Dean’s sublime The Last Thing to Burn which instantly made me want to read his other work.
I don’t think it mattered too much that I hadn’t read the previous books (though I want to rush and and buy them now) as I felt it worked well on its own, explaining all the reader needs to know and setting a very clear scene for what comes to follow.
I’m the type who watches scary stuff through her fingers, and definitely not before bed time, This was certainly a dark, spooky and intense read. Gasps galore. And some great dark humour. The last 10% I was literally holding my breath. And that ending! I will certainly be eagerly awaiting the next instalment.
Cannot recommend enough to readers of original dark mystery/thrillers. Tuva might be my new favourite character.
Thanks to the author, publisher and netgalley for providing me with this advance digital copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
An excellent thriller, with elements of mystery and horror, set in the lead up to Halloween deep in the Swedish hills. Tuva is a great character, I enjoyed the angle of her being a reporter, rather than a detective, but with every ounce of that curiosity to find out what was going on in the small hill town of Visburg. The weather and setting were very atmospheric and the descriptions of Pan Night and Halloween had all the creep and darkness of a horror story. Plenty of tension, clues were there but I felt it took you in all sorts of directions before, wham, that ending! An excellent read and I would definitely recommend.
Bad Apples by Will Dean. Oh boy! I had read The Last thing to Burn by Will Dean and loved his ability to convey personalities and situations so I couldn’t wait to get started on this one. I definitely should have read the synopsis more carefully. This is quite simply a horror story! Murder, an isolated and divided society with weirdness and rituals thrown in the mix! This was a timely read coming up to Hallowe’en. I was very happy with a tenacious, intelligent investigator, Tuva Moodyson, taking us through the many creepy misdirections to a cliff hanger of a conclusion. Definitely an entertaining read and mega creepy Three and a half stars but rounded to four for Will’s successful creation of a dark, atmospheric crime thriller
