Having been a fan of James Patterson and the ALex Cross series I was delighted to be granted an ARC of the audio book Like Father Like Son.
A fantastic introduction to a much loved character this YA book is perfectly narrated and I loved the development of Ali. My son (10yr old) and I enjoyed listening to the book together and discussing our theories. I hope JP continues to develop this into a series.
This story was really good and I loved the narration. I'm a huge fan of James Patterson and the Alex Cross series so it was really fun to listen to Ali's investigative tales. He and his friends are so fun and clever. It really is lile father like son.
This is a fun series that features Ali Cross and his friends. They end up solving different problems like his dad. I really liked the narrator. This book flows really well. I received an audiobook copy from Netgalley for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
I read James Patterson's books regularly for years, particularly the Alex Cross series, but I kind of tapered off when things changed - the writing felt different, and some of the storylines were way over the top. My 2 mid-grade readers and I did enjoy the Maximum Ride series, so I thought this one would be a good one to check out. My 14-year-old and I listened to this one together, and we both came away with mixed feelings. He liked the idea of a kid solving mysteries, but neither of us was thrilled with some of the behaviors like lying to his parents and great-grandmother. Even my son pointed out that Ali isn't much of a role model for kids, and I would have to agree. I realize kids find their share of trouble, and I can understand making mistakes, but willfully lying is a hard limit for me. Patterson does touch on some prevalent issues, which keeps the story current. It also feels like a political soapbox at times, and whether I agree or not, I don't feel like it's needed in a mid-grade book.
This book does have the short chapters and fast pacing of most Patterson stories, and my mid-grade kiddos appreciate those short chapters when they're determined to get in one more before bedtime. The narrators Zeno Robinson and Wayne Carr give a good performance. They keep the story fresh and entertaining, and the boy and I both enjoyed the narration. In the end, this one had things I liked and things I didn't, and I'm still on the fence about whether or not we'll continue with the series.
This was my first experience with a Middle Grade mystery/detective story, and while it's a quick read, I felt it was good adaptation of the police procedural for younger readers.
It's a good mix between teen drama/angst and learning the important lessons that teens don't actually know everything they think they do, and that their actions have real world consequences.
I really appreciated there was a balance between being pro-police and pointing out the flaws that exist within the system. The main character, Ali, stands more so on the pro-police side since his father is on the force, but at school he constantly challenged by kids who demand that changes are needed. It was great to see young adults getting encouragement to take pro-active steps in creating the change they want to see in the world.
Loved the dual narration from own voices Zeno Robinson and Wayne Carr. They were great choices for this father and son duo.
***Thank you to Hachette Audio for providing me with a copy of the audiobook for free via NetGalley for an unbiased review.
I loved both the story, and the narration of this book. I love James Patterson, and I'm very excited to have a new series to start!
Ali Cross by James Patterson is a great read from a character that I have loved. It was great to get Ali point of view along with Alex. I love James Patterson books.
My 12 year old son and I listened to this on a road trip and he is now a James Patterson fan! He absolutely loved the story line and was hooked and he was sad when it ended! Great job Patterson! I'll be looking into more of your YA books for sure!
I love James Patterson, and this story of his brought to life by excellent narration made for a great audiobook. I think that younger thriller lovers would love this book too, not too spooky or over the top, which is nice because the more family friendly novel follows the father/son plot lines. Thank you to NetGalley and Hachette Audio for a copy of this audiobook for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this story, itโs written for middle schoolers but the narrative make it great for adults too, it kept me engaged since the first page, it was full of action, fast-paced and the characters were relatable.
This is the second book in a series, I didnโt read the first one and had no problem following the story, it can be easily read as a standalone.

I'm loving this series! This was an even better mystery than the first one in the series. This was a good audio and a quick listen. This is a good YA series to listen to and if you are a James Patterson fan, then I highly recommend it!
I really enjoyed this audiobook about Ali Cross who is a teenage detective, solving a case to help his friend Zoe. Ali is the son of Alex Cross, the famous detective that James has written a lot of books about. The narrators of the book who portrayed Ali and Alex were very good. I liked the way the book felt like I was reading one of my Nancy Drew books from my childhood days. I loved the character of Nana Mama and the way she protected Ali and wanted the best for him. The book was easy to listen to and it was short, so it was a fast read which was perfect for me to read in one day.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and Net Galley for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
I listen to these audiobooks in the classroom with my students and they really liked the mystery in this one. We were able to make predictions and use this for so many different programs.
I have been devouring James Patterson books since I was in high school in the early 90's, I will absolutely read anything he writes. I was really excited to see that he started writing a young adult series starring Ali Cross, son of Alex Cross, who's series I love. I read the first book in just a couple of days, and it was an incredible introduction to Ali and his sleuthing skills. Like Father, Like Son, the second book in the series, was also good but not quite as good as the first one. I listened to this one as an audible book, and thought the narration of both voice actors was great and really added to the story. I will be looking forward to the next one! I hope this is a long series just like the Alex Cross series.

Description
โA crime at a concert near his school sparks his newest investigation, and it gets dangerous fast. Sometimes itโs good to have a father in the detective business. Ali Cross just solved his first real case.ย Alex Cross knows it's only a matter of time before his son finds his way into more trouble.ย Neither of them expected Ali to get caught up in another case so quickly.ย
Ali and his friends were just hanging out in Anacostia Park . . . then they became witnesses to a crime.ย Alex wants Ali to stay far away from the investigation. But Ali isn't going anywhere, not when his new friend Zoe is in trouble. It's up to Ali to figure out why she's lying to the policeโand who she's protecting.ย This is Ali's toughest case yet. As long as he trusts his Cross instincts, he may just have a shot at solving it . . .โ

My thoughtsโฆ
Entertaining. I havenโt read book one in this series, and Iโve never read any James Patterson books, including the Alex Cross series. Though, Iโve seen and liked the movies. This is a middle-grade fiction, but the narrative is great for adults too. The narrators were perfect for this short mystery and they brought the characters to life. There were enough action and mystery for me. And I appreciated the thoughts and musings regarding homelessness. If you like reading about young detectives this maybe the book for you. It also reminded me of The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew reimagined, and of course, with current events. Iโd read or listen to this with my godchildren/nieces/nephews because it had got great discussions and learning opportunities.
I want to say thank you so much to NetGalley, Hachette Audio, and Jame Patterson for this advanced audio book! I grew up a huge James Patterson fan and absolutely love the Alex Cross series. Ali Cross was such a quick and easy read!
I love the Alex Cross series and Ali Cross is just as cool as his father. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to book 2.
Regardless of age if you are a fan of Alex Cross you will love these Ali Cross stories. As many of you will know Ali is Alex Cross's middle school aged son. Ali has the mystery solving bug just like his dad. In this case he is trying to help out a friend that might not be so happy to have his help. Along the way he gets on the bad side of Nanna Momma which is not a good place to be. Ali learns a lot about people's perception of the police and homelessness along the way to helping his friend. We might see another police officer in the Cross family in the future.
I hope we see more stories from Ali. They are well written and fast paced for middle school children to enjoy.
The story opens with Ali and his friends, Gabe, Sedgwick, Ruby, Matteo, and Zoey sneaking off to attend a music festival at a Washington DC park. Ali is strictly forbidden to go to this area alone, but, like many teens, he is pushing his restrictions to get his parents to look at him as older. Besides, he is crushing on Zoey, and does not want to appear wimpy in front of his friends.
After the group hit the food booths, Zoey runs off to get the venue passes from her mother, one of the singers. Within minutes, the kids hear a gunshot. They run to check on Zoey who is hurt. Ali believes he sees the shooter running away, but Zoey insists there wasnโt anyone near her. The police are called, Zoey is taken to the hospital, the kids get in trouble, Nana mama and Alex Cross ground Ali for life, (not really but he gets a long punishment without technology). Ali and friends are determined to find out what happened and why Zoey is so nervous.
This is a good little mystery. While written for middle schoolers I enjoyed the story and audio too. My 9th grade granddaughter listened with me and loved it. She could relate to the kids anxious for more privileges while their parents are reluctant to recognize they are growing up. Ali encounters the D.C. homeless community, which set off a long discussion between my granddaughter and me.
The story is reminiscent of the Nancy Drew / Hardy Boys mysteries that I loved. Ali is the primary investigator with his friends helping him investigate. Alex Cross makes an appearance too. This isnโt his case, but he does use his police connections to get and give information. There are good father-son moments and a little tension among Ali, his parents, friends, and police. It is entertaining.
The narrators, Zeno Robinson and Wayne Carr do an excellent job bringing the characters to life. According to my granddaughter, she loved this so much, she will listen to more audio books in the future. The performances made the story and the characters real. There is action, mystery, tension, and various family issues that move the story at a fast pace. The characters are relatable, and fun to read. We couldnโt stop listening. A great story. We both recommend this book (audio or print) to Alex Cross fans and their children. It is great read for summer assignments.
I used to love reading James Pattersonโs Alex Cross series and when I saw there was a book with his son Ali as the main character, I was interested immediately.
Ali is at a festival in a park in DC when his friend Zoe is shot and taken to hospital. Ali and his friends decide to start their own investigation into what happened as they have the feeling Zoe is not telling them and the police the truth.
As Ali is trying to find out what actually happened, he also deals with a crush and a tough social science project.
This was my first audiobook EVER but definitely not my last. I liked listening to it a lot. I sped through the book and I thought it was wonderful to read about Ali when I remember reading about him being born.
Thank you to the publisher and to Netgalley for this ARC. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
