I loved this! It was so much more than I was expecting.
I often struggle to get really into a graphic novel series in the first volume because it’s hard to get a lot of depth into a single book with so little text (compared to regular novels of the same length), but this book managed to pack so much into less than 240 pages, not in terms of plot and action, but in terms of characters, relationships, and exploration of vampirism and this vampire society.
There are so many things I loved that it’s all just ping-ponging around my head with no hope of real organization, so here’s a list!
– We got to really meet six different vampires in this volume, and each was unique and different. I really got a sense of personality for every character. They all felt believable and somehow even felt older, like their actual ages, despite looking young.
– I loved good guy Ichii! For some reason, I thought Ichii would kinda be a jerk, but he was actually really sweet, trying his best to be a good guardian to En, and a good friend to Sugi. There was also something about how vampires who work for the Fangs organization (Ichii being one of them) are pretty much volunteers.
– En was adorable! So full of life and emotion, despite struggling a bit with not being human anymore. I can see why all the older vampires would like him. You can’t help but be charmed by him, and he’s not even trying.
– I loved the different relationship the vampires had with each other, with their families, etc. I don’t want to ruin the fun of letting you learn as you read, but there were all different kinds of love and romance and friendship and family, either already established or just blossoming.
– There’s such a sweet romantic relationship starting between En and Ichii! A newbie vamp, and a mentor who actually cares. I loved the banter and playfulness between them.
– There are some explicit steamy scenes. Trigger warning for the first being maybe kinda dubcon (En kept telling him to wait, slow down, etc. but Ichii didn’t, and then En liked it).
– I loved how much this explored different aspects of vampirism and the different ways it can affect people. Cheating. Loneliness. Depression. Lovers and children growing old. That sort of thing.
– This was also a somewhat interesting take on vampire society, what with the Fangs organization, blood delivery, pairing with other vampires being encouraged, support groups, etc.
– The art is beautiful! And everyone is sexy. I also liked the chibi kinda art scattered throughout because it brought out more fun and personality. (Maybe that’s typical in manga. I believe this is technically the first real manga I’ve read, though I read plenty of other graphic novels, webcomics, etc.) Also, I saw someone mention how nicely drawn all the hands are, and they were right, these are some perfect hands!
– It made me laugh at times. It just always cracks me up when vampires drink from blood bags like they’re juice pouches. There were also just some cute and funny moments, like En’s excitement over getting to play with a tortoise.
*Phew* Ok, I think that’s it!
I loved this graphic novel with its beautiful art, sexy vampires, unique characters, touching and interesting relationships, exploration of vampirism, and sweet blossoming romance!
“What kind of guy is unlucky enough to get bitten…and survive?” - FANGS
Warning 18+ content lies ahead.
If you like vampires, fantasy, manga, BL mangas, I think this book is for you. And also if you are an art hoe (like me), you’ll definitely enjoy it. The art was so immaculately beautiful it’s not a joke.
I remember vaguely reading Asa & Mitya by Billy Balibally sensei before as the art was familiar but other than that, I don’t remember anything.
This book is an easy and fun read, for adults of course!
Enjoyed this one! I wasn’t expecting it to be r18 so that was a little shock, but I do love vampires at any given moment. I would definitely continue!
It was impossible to read on a kindle not formatted for it. From page 24 to 116 . The manga was nice. I tried to find a story but again because of the format, it wasn't possible.
The stars are for the cartoons
the illustration wasn't my favorite to read in an e-arc, i feel like the style is more accessible when printed. however, the story was good and i liked the characters.
This was my first experience with Yaoi manga and I’m not sure that I really liked it that much. Overall I thought the story was good, but I didn’t like the illustration style, I found it hard to look at and there were some panels I couldn’t figure out what I was looking at. It was okay.
I always love reading series about vampires and FANGS has so much to offer: excellent characters, beautiful drawing, and equal amounts of humor, angst, and simmering romance. En is cute and lovable, a curious and excitable new vampire who is making his debut in vampire society. Ichii is En's guide to all things vampires and does his best to make sure that En is taken care of. I love their dynamic and the way their relationship develops. I also really like all the vampires that Ichii introduces En to, particularly Sugi, the depressed vampire with a tortoise for a companion. Through these meetings En gets to see all different facets of vampire society and learn about the support that vampires receive to keep them from attacking humans. Which brings up the lingering question: why was he attacked and what will he do with his second life? This volume ends on a bit of a cliffhanger with the introduction of a mysterious vampire and with hints at Ichii's past. I can't wait to read more!
I liked this little yaoi. The drawings were nice to look at but I had a lot of trouble at the beginning to recognize the different characters. It's also due to the fact that we arrive in the story and that we have the explanations only afterwards, so inevitably I was a little confused. As for the story, I was expecting a bit of an investigation to find out who was the vampire who attacked En but in the end nothing. Instead, we follow the characters in their lives and especially En who must now learn to live as and with vampires. I enjoyed learning more about everyone and I can't wait to find out more, especially about Ichii. I think that overall it lacked a bit of cohesion but I'm still looking forward to reading more.
I recommend this to people who like to read yaoi (mature scenes) with sexy vampires.
3.5/5

This was a fun vampire BL manga, exactly what I was looking for when I requested it! This story focuses on En, a 19 year-old newly turned vampire, and Ichii, his protector/guardian. This first volume provides an introduction to the FANG world and En's assimilation into it. While the romance took off a touch too quickly for my taste, by the end their connection did feel genuine and real to me. I felt like the side characters contributed well to the overall plot, especially Sugi and the way he deals with his complex grief over losing his partner. I did feel like the set up for the world was a little bit rushed and wished it had been explained a little more thoroughly before leading into Volume 2. The art style was beautiful, and overall this was a fun first volume!
I loved this graphic novel alot. Its not suitable for young kids as there are spicy scenes in it. But over all i love it and I want to get a physical copy of it.
Turned into a vampire during a violent attack, nineteen-year-old En is suddenly thrust into a world totally different from where he came. Guiding him along his journey is the mysterious Ishii. En can't help the attraction he feels toward his mentor, and at a vampire meet-and-greet, he expresses his intentions to pair with Ishii.

This is a sensual yaoi manga that features very pretty characters with slightly blurred sex on the page. I love me my vampires and so I was intrigued by the premise of this manga. And it was okay.
I found the book enjoyable, but the writing was more stilted and herky-jerky than I like. It felt more like a direct translation rather than a cleaned up interpretation of the text. It made it hard for me to follow the very paper-thin plot. In a way, this book felt more like a set up for the universe and the characters with several sex scenes mixed in rather than a cohesive story. It's okay, but I don't feel like I need to read the next volume to find out more.
Additionally, I found the art style pretty but lacking in distinct character design. There are several characters who I could not tell apart when they were on the same page or in the same panel. And I found that distracting. I need to be able to tell at a glance who is whom, and I couldn't. Sugi and Ishii had too similar of design for instance. As did En, Utsugi, and Umesaki (and one of those is a woman so...)
This is a manga that would be great for people who love steamy Yaoi and paranormal mystery. As for me, I liked it but didn't love it. So I'm going to give this...
Three Stars.
I received an ARC of this Manga via NetGalley
Thank you Tokyopop for providing me with an eARC. I voluntarily read and reviewed and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is the first volume in a new manga series about vampires. Anyone who knows me or follows my Goodreads close enough would know I love all things vampires so when I saw a new manga coming out I knew I had to read it. This manga follows En who is the only survivor of a vampire attack and he has been turned. He is taken under the guardianship of Ichii. The first volume follows En learning about what his new world is going to be like. He learns more about Ichii as their relationship evolves and meets a few other vampires. These side characters are very interesting and have depth.
I really loved the art style and the story. This is a BL manga and it is 18+. It does end on a bit of a cliffhanger and I very much want Vol 2.
CW: Blood, suicidal thoughts, loss of a loved one, sexual content, dubious consent
I love this series already. I like the art style; the characters' expressions vary a lot, and they often emote (especially En).
I love how vampires interact with the human world, how they deal with their bloodlust, and prevent attacks on humans. Rather than just throwing En and Ichii together, Balibally came up with a rather realistic way for them to come together that also establishes the world and the affects it has on others. It's a nice twist on the old vampire-lover trope.
The lore is pretty basic and is really only brought up to keep the story going. There's also a lot of disjointed transitions between serious and non-serious sex scenes. This made the story feel kinda rushed.
En is a really likable protagonist. He's curious, kind, self-conscious, and endearing. In contrast, Ichii as the duo-tagonist is somewhat mysterious, really chill, and clearly hot for En. While their relationship is full of banter and flirting (on Ichii's part), there's some deeper moments near the end. Though En is pretty wary in the beginning, he quickly comes to trust Ichii. Their relationship is slowly blooming, and it's nice to see that instead of just insta-love.
There's hints of vampire politics, but since the first book was just an introduction to the series, politics will probably come up more and interfere with their relationship in some way or another.
I'm excited for the next one!
I got an ARC of this book.
I am all about my BL and about vampires, so when I saw them mixed together I knew I had to read it.
The art is pretty standard manga work. There is nothing that makes it stand out from any other manga, which is to say it is pretty but nothing beyond exciting. The best part was the tortoise’s face, there was such emotion in that one face.
The story was a little rushed. There was a lot of vampire lore that was only brought up to keep the story going. In the first chapter/issue, there was a lot of lore that just wasn’t given so it felt like being thrown to the sharks. While this made sense since the MC didn’t know anything about being a vampire yet, it also made the rest of the book read wrong. The rest of the book had more handholding when it came to vampire lore. The lore was handed out more gently and it worked a bit better to start a story. Having the two methods of learning the world made the story feel disjointed and wonky.
The story also jumped from super serious to weird sex scenes. Weird in the sense that the MC is not gay and that is a plot point. I am not into straight guys “turning” gay. So I will need something more to really ship the main couple. As it stands, the romance was the weakest part of the story. I wanted to ship it, but there was no reason to. There just started to be glimmers of why I should care near the end. It piqued my interested for a volume 2, but in volume 1 I am here just for vampire sex.
I'm a huge fan of vampires which is what drew me to this one and it didn't disappoint!
En is a newly turned vampire who gets found by Ichii, who works for the vampire rights organization known as FANGS, he ends up telling other vampires at a mixer that they're "paired up" which basically means they're blood married. They start to get closer after but still aren't "paired" though you can see by the end of this volume it's getting there. This is definitely NSFW levels of yaoi, so I was very pleasantly surprised.
I think the author does a grew job of introducing other characters for future volumes or just to add to Ichii and En's story. I'm really looking forward to reading more of them!
Thank you to Tokyopop and NetGalley for letting me read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I loved the different take on vampires and how they choose their mates. I also really enjoyed that vampire mates fed on one another and only fed on humans as a treat rather than necessity. It was definitely an interesting take and, though I hadn't been expecting it, I liked it quite a bit.
Thank you, NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read this manga.
DNF @ page 50.
I requested this because the premise sounded really cool and I adore LGBTQ+ vampire books/comics. Unfortunately this one wasn't really my cup of tea, but I definitely recommend checking out other reviews!
The manga sparked my interest due to the contemporary style and the new twist on the already familiar vampire-lover-trope. The story did not disappoint, and I am excited to introduce more people to it!
The manga's premise is fascinating, and I enjoyed the story while reading the first volume of the series. As the manga belongs to the genre of Yaoi, it was no surprise that the story would get hot quite fast. Regardless, the actual plot did not lack due to that! While the FANGS pairing system plays a central role, none of the characters solely focus on finding a partner. Each of the introduced vampires is well written and, thus, a round character. From the get-go, it is established that each of the characters has their secrets and struggles, which I am excited to explore.
While the story on its own is already great, the art style is breathtaking. Each of the male characters is extraordinarily handsome and expressional in the panels. Furthermore, there are multiple additional illustrations in the manga, which are each fantastic! They are each in black and white, which is standard practice in mangas, but the missing color does not affect the beauty of the illustrations at all. I like the implementation of contemporary fashion brands in the illustrations and the subtle changes in the designs.
In conclusion, "FANGS, Volume 1" is an excellent kickoff to an exciting Vampire Yaoi! I read this manga in one sitting, and I am excited to see how the story unravels, as it has more to offer than handsome Vampires. We, as readers, are introduced to a world full of mystery that En needs to explore at least as much as the body of Ichii.
While I didn't find anything overly original or exciting about this volume, I will say that it is a great start to what could be an amazing series. I like the concept of a fresh, new vampire in a sea of vampires that have been around for hundreds of years. The "pairing system" and how blood sharing works is interesting and sets up the steamy aspects of the series nicely. This first volume leaves A LOT of questions unanswered and ends with a cliffhanger. Normally, that would annoy me, but when it comes to supernatural stories, I think it aids in the suspense and world building. I am very much looking forward to volume 2!
A huge thank you to Netgalley and Tokyo Pop for a free advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Fangs (volume 1) is a manga that follows En, a survivor of a vampire attack and the vampire society known as FANGS that helps vampires cohabitate with humans. Fangs is a pretty standard and typical yaoi smut manga with a borderline tsundere uke and forward but kind seme with a dark past. If that is a genre you enjoy, you would probably enjoy this more than I did. It's not bad, but these days I prefer substance over smut with plot. I do like the art style. which is easy to follow and not cluttered.
CW: graphic sex, vampirism/blood drinking
