While I did not enjoy the book, I do like the book club kit. It has some great material that every bookclub would benefit from in the discussion.

I didn't realise this was a study guide rather than the story when I requested it. Having not actually read the story puts me at a disadvantage, but it looks very well put together with good questions to get a book club membership discussing the book. It is certainly thorough.

This will work as a great addition to bookclub readings. It is a fun collections of questions for further exploration of the novel, its themes and characters. In addition to some historical context of what was going on at that period of time with Asian American populations in the US, the good and the bad.. I do personally appreciate the vintage cocktail menu, this is going to be such a fun activity to follow trough..

This is a very well composed book club kit for Nghi Vo's debut novel The Chosen and the Beautiful. The discussion questions are very well written and would definitely facilitate an insightful conversation about the themes in the book and the differences between The Great Gatsby and this retelling. The note about Asian Americans in the Jazz Age was particularly informative. The kit also includes a cocktail menu of drinks mentioned in the book and papercutting instructions which would be a great book club activity!

Useful kit, with thought provoking discussion questions, so you can read this as a stand alone in its own right, apart from a retelling of a classic.

This is a review not of the book (which is brilliant) but of the Book Club Kit.

The book itself is wonderful --this is a link to my review on Goodreads https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/3955663628--so it was a real boon to find this book club kit. I had questions about the Manchester Act, because I saw in it the Chinese Exclusion Act so having the history laid out was really informative and added depth to the reading. Pointing on the various class experiences of being marginalised in a country which you claim but which is hostile to you is an important learning opportunity.

The historical context and background information is really well thought out and I very much appreciated the excellent cocktail list! The paper cutting background and context was also really wonderful to read.

All in all, this is a stellar companion to the book and I hope the publishers consider including it at the back of the next printing.

Where do I begin? This is a beautifully crafted material, it gives even more substance to The Chosen and the Beautiful, which already is a masterpiece, in my opinion. Very unique, engaging, insightful - and fun idea, it makes you appreciate the book even more. As a teacher and book club member, I can truly appreciate the hard work behind this kit. This was one of my picks for pride month as the protagonist is queer, Asian and adopted. I really enjoyed this book because the storyline felt so authentic. I’m also always fascinated by different cultures and how social norms and expectations differ so much. Such a great book!
