This is the story of young women who join the Red Cross, learning to be nurses, and helping during WW2 in Great Britain. Some will make it and some will not.
Perfect for fans of WWII fiction. Kitty, Jo, and Trixie, who come from very different circumstances, are all training to be Red Cross nurses- and they make a wonderful trio. Kitty falls for Michael, a Canadian doctor who is also an orphan (keep in mind, btw, that these are adults but no matter). They are sent to different places but keep their love going. In some ways this is a famiiar tale but it's also one which will pull you in with humor and heart. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Here's hoping the next book in the series will follow Jo or Trixie,
The Red Cross Orphans Book 1
Orphan Kitty Pattison is young, naive and ready to do her bit for the war effort when she volunteers with the Red Cross and pledges to help those most in need. It's one of the most nerve-wracking moments of her life, but when she meets fellow volunteers Joan Norfolk and Trixie Dunn, and a bond of friendship is forged in the fire of life on the wards during the Blitz.
This is quite and emotional story set around WWII. This is the story of Kitty Pattison who joins the Red Cross to help out during the war. Kitty makes great friends in Joan and Trixie. Kitty meets Michael and quickly finds herself falling for him. The characters are well developed and believable, We learn of the hardships they had to endure. We follow Kitty through her nurses training. The ending was a bit of a let down but hopefully the second book will continue where this book left off.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #HarperCollinsUK #OneMoreChapter and the author #GlynisPeters for my ARC of #TheRedCrossOrphans in exchange for an honest review.
Red Cross Orphans is a book you will not want to rush through. It’s a story of two people who were orphaned at a young age and met while working for the war effort in the UK.
The story is a journey following Kitty as her career as a Red Cross Nurse. She is a caring, confident, and compassionate woman. She takes what is thrown at her in stride, including multiple relocations away from her friends and the man she is falling in love with. I’m sure the war was full of people like her and that is why we won.
I enjoyed reading this book and did not want it to end.
I enjoyed the story as it delves into a new branch of service in Britain, Red Cross volunteer nurses. Kitty was an orphan, who lost her mother, father and brother in a tragic accident, when she was four. She was raised by a loving aunt and uncle, but for some reason she didn’t seem to feel like she fit, despite their love for her and her close relationship with her cousin, who died in the war.
Despite their concern, sending another family member off to assist in the war effort, she is determined to serve, and she develops a close relationship with other recruits. She excels in her volunteer work and rises up quickly, becoming a part of the emergency response team, where she works closely with a handsome Canadian doctor.
This is a story of friendships, romance, family, and jealousy, during stressful wartime effort, dangerous missions, and enemy attacks, requiring skill and courage.
Glynis Peters is a skilled storyteller, creating wonderful and likable characters, resulting in quite a page turner. As a nurse, I felt a connection with those brave young women, that weren’t always given the respect that the career nurses were, but were able to learn the skills needed to further their careers, post wartime.
My thanks to NetGalley, HarperCollins Publishers and Glynis Peters for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
A great historical story set in the war. Whilst Kitty is young and nervous, she wants to do her bit. She makes some friends and a handsome doctor who change her views on life. She must learn to not allow the past to shape her future.
The Red Cross Orphans is a sweet war-time historical romance. The two main characters, Kitty and Michael, meet at a hospital where he is a doctor and she is a Red Cross nurse. As their story progresses, they discover that they are both orphans, hence the title.
There are some descriptions of bombings and the aftermath on people and places, and a bit of injury descriptions as well, but nothing very graphic or disturbing. The romance is clean, just stolen kisses as the era tended to accept. A bit of female bonding but not much.
I enjoyed the story but felt that the end was a bit abrupt, I’m hoping that the author did this as a way to leave the story open for a sequel.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.
The Red Cross Orphans by Glynis Peters is an enjoyable WWII novel that follows the life of Kitty Pattinson, a young woman who joins the Red Cross to become a nurse.
I found her story to be engaging and loved the friendships she developed along the way. Time's of great adversity do forge lifelong friendships and it was nice to see that portrayed in her relationships with Jo and Trix, even as they each went their separate ways on assignments.
Given the title of the novel, I had anticipated that Kitty's future would involve working with orphans somehow, and have to admit I was a little disappointed as I realized that the orphans, while depicted as children on the cover, really referred to Kitty and the Canadian doctor she meets and falls in love with, both of whom are adult orphans.
But overall, I found it to be a heartwarming story and look forward to reading more from this author.
My first thoughts on this book is it is a very long book and it took me a while to read it. I'm not saying it wasn't good as I found it very interesting but sometimes when books are too long you can start to loose interest and this is why I had to stop and start with this book.
Having said that I still found it quite intriguing and the story was good. Young Kitty Pattison just wants to help in the war effort but she finds friendship and love which helps get through this hard and troubled time. A bit slow to start, and as I said a bit long overall. If it was shorter with some of the fillers taken out it would have been a much better book, in my opinion.
Kitty Pattison was raised by her Aunt and Uncle after her family died in an accident. Set in England during WWII Kitty is ready to join the Red Cross and do her part for the war. Along with Jo and Trix Kitty starts training to become a nurse. Kitty is a little unsure of her role in the war, At Kitty's first training station she meets Michael a Canadian doctor. Michael sees how hard Kitty works and her dedication to her job. Michael becomes interested in Kitty in a professional manner but with the intense time they spend together a special bond forms. I was interested in the country side that Kitty traveled through. I still can not believe all the countries that were engaged in the war and how it affected them all. This was a great introduction to Kitty and Michael and I am interested in seeing where book 2 takes them.
A World War Two story based on two adults orphaned as children , Kitty who joins the Red Cross aiming to become a nurse and Michael a Canadian who came to Britain to train as a doctor. Their meeting and loved affair intermingles with episodes set during the dear that initially does not let their course of love run smoothly. Love does conquer all with fate playing a huge part.
I found it an easy read if a little predictable.
Having read all this authors previous books I was excited to start this, it certainly didn't disappoint. A fantastic read which I devoured in 1⃣ sitting. Brilliant characters and a great storyline. I would love to read a sequel.
The Red Cross Orphans by Glynis Peters is Historical Fiction set in World War II. Glynis Peters tells a story of the Blitz in England, War Orphans, Red Cross nursing and romance. I enjoyed reading about the nurse’s training and about their work. The way nurse’s moved frequently and their assignment changes reminded me of today’s traveling nurses. I liked the characters but felt some characters and situations were not always believable. The Red Cross Orphans is an exciting story and very difficult to put down. I look forward to the next book and new adventures.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. I appreciate the opportunity and thank the author and publisher for allowing me to read, enjoy and review this book. 4 Stars
Book REview
The Red Cross Orphans by Glynis Peters
Thank you @netgalley and @harpercollins for my gifted copy in return for an honest review
Peters tells the story of Kitty Pattinson- an orphan raised by her aunt and uncle. The reader follow’s Kitty’s coming of age journey as she trains to become a Red Cross nurse in England. Her training takes her across the country, meeting new people, new friends and a group of Canadian doctor’s volunteering with the Bristish Red Cross.
This read wasn’t a tear jerker for me. The romance and love interest were secondary. For me, I was completely enthralled by Kitty’s journey to become a “licensed” nurse. The details regarding the uniforms, the nuns, the differences between Navy and Army, nursing duties etc brought her character’s journey to life. Her persistence to learn and give of herself so wholeheartedly to her vocation was what drew me in to the story.
Peters continues to write historical fiction that captures my attention and keeps me engaged. I can depend on her ability to write characters such as Kitty- women who are strong, resilient, brave and knowledgeable - and I am never disappointed.
For lovers of historical fiction and WW11 themes this book is a must read.
Easy to get into, hard to put down! 2 people destined to be together yet always so far apart, This story was a reality for so many during war times, how many beat all the odds piled up again them?
Following the footsteps of Red Cross volunteer Kitty as she strives to become a nurse during WWII gives readers a glimpse into the hectic life of nurses. I liked Kitty's strength and compassion for the soldiers and her commitment to service. I liked the friendship she found with the women she served with. It was hard to believe the Red Cross put up with Belle. I felt the book ended quite abruptly so am happy to see this is the start of a new series. Looking forward to the next book.
Bonds of Friendship
Romantic, emotional and heartwarming this story is a wartime romance between two orphans , Kitty and Michael. It is also about the friendships Kitty has with the other red cross volunteers working their way to a nursing career during WWII. They formed a strong friendship that would endure. Kitty, Jo and Trix are three girls far from home working to help injured soldiers. They all find their way during their time in service but they never lose their friendship.
Kitty falls in love with Michael the handsome Canadian soldier and through some trials they find ways to be together during the war. It is quite a romance and a great love story. Two orphans find each other.
It was interesting to know the work that the Red Cross girls did during the war and kind of sad about the orphans that were cared for because the bombings in England made them orphans.
I liked the descriptions of the scenery in the different places that Kitty was placed during her service and the friendships that she made along the way. The Character of Belle was a bit humorous actually, the girls were frustrated with her, but she did add some color to the story.
I enjoyed reading this story and I hope there is another book following the girls in their lives after the war is over and a bit more on the orphanage and definitely on Michael and Kitty's further adventures.
Thanks to Glynis Peters for writing another great book to Harper Collins, U.K. , one more chapter for publishing it and to NetGalley for allowing me to read a copy for my review.
This book was so good! It follows Kitty as she trains to be a Red Cross nurse. She meets her fellow trainees and becomes close friends with two. Kitty is a strong female willing to go above and beyond.
The story was good, kept my attention to the very end. The ending was good but I can’t help but feel like it could have been better. It just kinda ended, I wasn’t ready for it to be over.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the early copy
The Red Cross Orphans is a lovely compelling read set back in World War 2 ,a story about a young girl who joins the Red Cross Nurses during wartime to do her bit ! The characters are brilliant and I felt I knew them .This is a story about new friendships, bravery, love and sometimes heartbreak but always immense courage and always hope .A very enjoyable read .Many thanks to the Publisher ,the Author and NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest review .
The Red Cross orphans from Glynis Peters is another fabulous book from the author. Set in WW11, it follows Kitty Pattison who was orphaned at a young age and her uncle dying at the battle of Dunkirk. Wants to do her bit for the war. So, she joins the Red Cross to train as a nurse. There she meets other trainees Jo and Trixie and becomes the best of friends. But will their friendship stand the test of time as all three of them are split up and stationed in all sides of Britain and Scotland.
Kitty is stationed up in Scotland while on the way there she meets dashing Canadian doctor Michael Mc Cathy also an orphan. They build a relationship together even when they are on the other sides of the country, as their commitment to the war is paramount. Kitty is committed to help people around her. Even putting her own life before others in her duty.
Thank you, Harper Fiction One More Chapter for the ARC. This is another emotional story full of hope and courage and I couldn’t put this down. I love it. This is a great historical novel showing the hardships that the nurses had to go through. It wasn’t a glamorous job. But Like Kitty they still had the strength and determination to help others less fortunate than themselves. I loved the well-developed characters of Kitty and Belles character and her audacity to get away with things, it gave me a laugh. The only concern I have this story the ending was a bit abrupt I hope there is another book in this story to continue the story of Kitty and Michael. Five stars from me.
