Essentially "The Red Cross Orphans" is a wartime romance about orphan Kitty. Kitty struggles to pursue a career in nursing as her superiors move her from one posting to another, interrupting her studies. This peripatetic lifestyle also complicates her love life as it makes meetings with her boyfriend difficult. The book shows that the Red Cross nurses were not treated as well as others such as the Queen Alexandra's nurses and were given more menial tasks despite having the training and ability to do more. This is one of Kitty's frustrations.
