I enjoyed this a lot and found it easy to get into, a solid police procedural that kept me guessing with some unexpected twists - exactly what I wanted. So many people seemed to have a motive, I found it impossible to guess the killer., There are things about the old farmhouse that genuinely gave me the creeps. The Killer in the Snow is the second book in a series...didn't realise this until I started reading, thankfully it didn't matter that I hadn't read the previous book and there's actually a whole section at the end explaining a bit of the back story and some background on the detectives.
Thoroughly enjoyed..thanks so much!

Fabulous story that I could not put down. Would highly recommend to fans of this genre. Great writing, and I will look for more from this author.

A year has passed since “ The Christmas Killer “ that introduced us to D I James Walker. Again D I Walker is called to a murder scene, this time a remote farmhouse where three bodies have been found. With no witnesses and little evidence …….except this farmhouse was the scene of another murder committed 20 years ago! Are they linked at all? An intriguing whodunnit that will have you turning the pages until the very end.

I enjoyed reading the first book in this series so I was keen to read this one too (you don't need to read them in order but I'd recommend it - it introduces the main characters and their backgrounds).

This is great series to read in the winter months, if you want something seasonal but not the stereotypical romance story.

Set in a snowy village in the countryside, DI James Walker expects it to be a quieter place to live and police compared to his precious life in London.

If you enjoy an easy read, police procedural, whodunit, set in the festive period then give this a go.

I've read both James Walker books in the space of two days and it was the best decision I made. I love the main characters and small village atmosphere of this series.

Following a triple murder on Christmas Eve James Walker is tasked with working it out. I really love crime novels which have split timelines so this was perfect as it switched between the present time and a similar crime 24 years earlier.

I liked that this was a completely different crime trope to the first book but was done just as well. I'm very excited to read more in this series.

I enjoyed this book and found it very gripping. Some good twists, especially towards the end, to keep you guessing. I've read both books in the series and am looking forward to the next one!

James is hoping this year is going to be a quieter Christmas, unlike last year, but just when he thinks he coukd get his wish, the bodies of a family are found at their farm just outside the village. Initially appearing to be a murder-suicide, James is not convinced and on investigating further, uncovers a chilling similarity to a tragedy at the same farm over twenty years ago. Add into this, the criminal that he and his wife Annie fled London to avoid is now on the run and suspected to be heading North, James is most definitely not going to get the peaceful Christmas he was hoping for!

This is a really well-plotted mystery with excellent police procedural elements. In a picturesque setting with a cast of characters that we are getting to know more, it is a great Christmas read.

When tragedy strikes at Bateman’s farm, DI Walker and his team initially suspect a murder-suicide. But the discovery of a secret room behind the wall leads them to discover a similar event that took place over 20 years ago. What connects the deaths with a missing baby?

Alex Pine has created an enjoyable mystery, from the footprints in the snow at the beginning, to the final truth about the events of the past. DI James Walker is a strong character, trying to establish himself in a new role, having relocated from London. There are many references back to the events of the first book in the series, which did get a little irritating at times, but overall I did enjoy reading the Killer in the Snow. As with many crime stories, whether there should be so much murder in such a small community is debatable!

After reading The Christmas Killer earlier this month, I was excited to follow up with this.

In this instalment, we are investigating the killing of a husband and wife and their daughter on Christmas Eve and unexpectedly solving a killing in the same house from 24 years earlier.

Whilst I didn't quite find this as gripping as Pine's previous novel, I did still enjoy it. The storyline had many twists and turns which although in some instances could be predictable, left me guessing in other areas. I did find that some of the characters were difficult to warm to this time - I disliked Annie whereas in Christmas Killer, I had quite liked her. This time all she did was moan about being tired, sick and constipated due to being pregnant. She never seemed happy about being pregnant, that just didn't come across well, particularly as in the last novel she had been so desperate for children. I also found the way James and Annie spoke to each other to be very formal and not in keeping with a married couple.

Generally, the book is easy to read though and although I struggled with some of the characters, it didn't take away from my overall enjoyment.

Loved this second installment, I admittedly didn't find it as gripping as the first but still found it a thrilling read that kept me guessing the suspect throughout! I'll definitely read the third in the series when the time comes!

The second DI James Walker book in the series and I think I enjoyed this plot more than the first. Cliché as the book is, Christmas and there's another murder, or three. The tie in of a murder over twenty years meant we were trying to solve both which was a great additional twist. My only criticism was how unbelievable it was by the end. However, another good Christmas read.

This was an amazing read for me. It starts off with a gruesome murder of a family on Christmas eve. Detective DI  James Walker is called to the scene and they discover that the murder is very similar to one committed 20 years ago. Is it a coincidence, or is their more to the story?

It was a fast paced read, one that kept me guessing throughout. I've grown to like detective books and this was no exception. There were a lot of twists and suspense building up to the end, and I enjoyed guessing. I love the detective's relationship with his wife, they seem quite solid and more intriguing is the guy that seems to be after them. The setting was wonderful, as it added a whole new exciting layer to the thriller.

This is the second book in the DI James Walker series. Though I haven't read the first, I must say this can be read as standalone. If you love crime novels filled with suspense and hooking plots, then this one is for you.

Thanks to Avon books, Netgalley and the author for providing me with an arc copy of The Killer In The Snow.

This was a nice and cosy little Christmas read - well for someone who loves nothing more than crime and murder 😂

It was a lot more subdued than book 1 but equally as thrilling. I had a feeling early on who I thought the killer could be, and did not think it would have been a murder-suicide.

Obviously, I was acting cocky and got it totally wrong.

Although my feeling of the missing baby not being dead was correct, I could not have guessed the events that were due to unfold.

This is definitely a book that will keep you guessing until the very end.

DI James Walker hopes he’s in for a quiet Christmas with his wife. This ideal is shattered when a whole family is found murdered in a farmhouse in his village. With the murder scene right on his doorstep all his neighbours are under scrutiny. What makes the case even more peculiar is that a similar thing happened to the previous owners 24 years prior. 🏠

James Walker returns and it was so good to catch up with these characters again! I read ‘The Christmas Killer’ last year so was super excited to get this one from NetGalley this year. Although this is book 2 in the series it can definitely be read as a stand-alone but if you can I would read the first one for continuity of the characters. 📚

I love a police procedural thriller and I didn’t see this ending coming! I was kept guessing throughout the whole book and I would recommend this as a good, easy read for sure! Once again, the snowy scenes were set perfectly and the small English village vibes really jumped off the page. Can’t wait for book number 3 next Christmas! ❄️

The Killer in the Snow is the 2nd book in the DI James Walker series written by Alex Pine. As I wanted to get the complete experience of getting to know the characters in a book, I got hold of the first book, The Christmas Killer, in which DI James Walker gets himself transferred to a small village in Cumbria, to escape from a mafia boss, who has vowed revenge against him.

Soon after the Detective moves there with his wife, he comes across a weird murder, which turns into a murder spree and stumps the police department, before they finally catch the murderer. I enjoyed that story tremendously and the suspense was great as I couldn't at all guess who the culprit is.

The story in this 2nd book begins about 1 year after the events of the previous book. It is the Christmas season again and just when the whole village breathes a sigh of relief that this Christmas was uneventful, a whole family is found dead in their kitchen, in what appears to be a murder-suicide. But detective James finds himself unable to see it as such. And when the investigation of the case progresses, weird facts after weird facts come to light, making the case one of the most difficult the Detective ever had to solve. On top of that, he also gets to know that his nemesis has gone underground and he suspects the Mafia boss might target him. We get to follow him as he finally solves the case amidst too many other troubles.

I absolutely loved both the books in the series and the way the author sets the mood of the book is terrific. It has a slightly dark mood throughout but not so much that we feel burdened when we complete the book. For all the bad things we are made to live throughout the book, there is still a note of positivity and lightness that flows in the background of the book. I particularly liked the characters of DI James and his wife - they are realistic, flesh- and-blood people with weaknesses and vulnerabilities. They get frustrated, feel fear and get irritated at times too. This style of writing of the author gives a credibility to the characters and the events which unfold in the story.

Though I do wonder how the author intends to proceed with the story further; come to think of it, there is only so many murders that can take place in a small village. Nevertheless, I cannot wait for the next book in the series and meet DI James Walker again.

The book totally deserves the 5 stars I have given and the opinions I have expressed in the review are completely my own. Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and the author Alex Pine for the ARC provided, in exchange for an honest review from me.

This book was surprising, but not as thrilling as the original story.
I really did not enjoy the writing style of this book.
However, I did enjoy the multiple suspects throughout this book.
I will continue to read this series.

Although this is book number two in the series, you do not have to have read the first in order to understand and enjoy this one.

While this to me, feels more like a police procedural than a thriller, it sadly fell flat in both categories. The writing comes across as very dry, with nothing to make the characters stand out from each other. So much so that aside from DI Walker, I had trouble keeping the rest of them separated. Added to that, it seemed like every day a new lead came to them freely with little investigating actually done on their part, and while there are numerous suspects brought in over the course of the book, none of them seemed to bring anything interesting to the plot.

Another issue that I had was that despite the author's best efforts at concealing the truth of what had happened in the present-day murders, to me it seemed fairly obvious. So much so that I never believed their prime suspect had anything to do with it despite the original evidence seeming to say otherwise.

There was also the small matter of the one side-story (which to me was a tad more interesting than the main story), is wrapped up in too nice a bow. I would have thought a criminal mastermind such as this character was purported to be would have put more effort into his plan of revenge than what was given to us.

Despite the issues I personally had with this novel, if in the future I come across another with an interesting premise, I would give this author another chance.

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.

I thoroughly enjoyed book one is this series last year, so was very excited to be approved to read this on netgalley. This was another great read. It’s an easy read but still a very enjoyable murder mystery. In fact, I guessed parts of the ‘big reveal’ but that didn’t dampen my enjoyment of it. If this series continues, I will definitely keep reading it.
