A poet of our times.
I’ll read anything Kate Baer writes and if you’re also a woman prone to daydreams about what it means to exist *amongst it all* than you should too.
After loving Baer's first collection, picking this one up was a no-brainer. I loved this set of poems just as much and can't wait to read her latest book!
I love Kate Baer's found poems. She's so creative and talented, and we sell a ton of her books at the bookstore. Will definitely recommend to my customers.
Kate Baer seems to reach right into my soul and grip tight onto things and feelings and emotions I didn’t know I was grappling with. Keeping this one next to my nightstand for a long time coming.
I have read very few poetry books, but I truly enjoyed this one. Kate Baer was truly creative with her style of poems in this book and I look forward to seeing more of her work.
I like the idea of highlighting words from a body of text to give an alternative message than originally intended, and kudos to Baer for that artform. But the social and political messages she's conveying aren't for me. I don't have an interest reading any more from this author.
This is Kate's second poetry book and WOW, I have reread it a few times. In this book, she takes the negative comments she receives on social media and turns them into poems, and the results are dazzling. Like her first poetry book, this is one I can pick up over and over and it feels new every time.
Love everything from this poet. Teachers can use this book as a mentor text for erasure poetry lessons.
I Hope This Finds You Well is a collection of erasure poems created from notes author, Kate Baer, received from supporters and detractors. These poems are intended to inspire readers that anything negative and painful (especially comments from internet trolls) can be turned into something beautiful. I enjoyed reading the positivity that Baer found in each note and was inspired to take a step back and look for beauty in the negativity around me.
Special thanks to Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Kate Baer has a away of reaching into the essence of something and expressing emotion so vividly. It's stunning how relatable and talented she is.
I did not like this book. I was not a fan at all. the poetry was not very well written and i wanted to stop writing about halfway through
I think this book is a great conversation starter, and I commend the author for sharing works that have impassioned her response to the antifeminism movement at large. This work is more so a therapeutic outlet for the author than it is content for reader consumption.
An excellent collection of erasure poems that are insightful, cutting, and heartwarming. Kate Baer's very clever with this one.
I'm not a big reader of blackout poetry but I really did enjoy these poems. In my opinion, it is very tricky to write evocative poetry when limited to certain words in a certain order, but I think the original piece being shown before the poem tended to have a very feeling effect. I haven't read Baer's other work but I definitely plan to now. I'm even more excited to read her poetry in free form as opposed to her well-done, but restrictive, blackout poetry work.
Thank you NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read for a review.
This book is good. Like blackout poetry when there's an article or something else and making them into a poem, thought, or your own writing.
Pros: I began following the author on Instagram and then read her first book of poetry because of these erasure poems. I think it's brilliant how the author takes the words of one person and boils them down into something so profound. I find myself telling everyone I speak to about these poems and their brilliance.
Cons: None except I wish there were even more poems in the book!
Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Perennial for the opportunity to read this book.
I've shared this review on Goodreads, Storygraph, and Amazon..
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for sharing the title. All opinions are my own.
Lovely. I follow Kate Baer on her social media and love the found poetry she makes out of her DMs. One note for the eBook version - I had my Kindle set to night mode, so the distinctions between the original and the modified poem were indistinguishable. Once I changed the settings I could follow along with the poems. Like many poetry volumes, best consumed a bit at a time so the words can breath.
Kate Baer is pure magic. This group of poems is balm to the soul. I love that she has taken articles, DMs, and other tidbits that we consume on the day to day and can weigh a person down and flipped the script to harness them into words that can empower. The blackout method of poetry is really appealing to me, as well. I think I’ll be referring back to this book across time when I need a reminder of what a phenomenal being I am, just as I am. I can’t wait to press this beautiful collection into everyone’s hands over the holidays.
*A special thank you to Harper Perennial and Paperbacks and NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC of this collection of poems. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and are voluntarily given*
Kate Baer was my introduction to erasure poems and I absolutely loved this art form! Her poems (more like responses) are smart and witty, but depending on the context they can also be entertaining or even heartbreaking.
In "I Hope This Finds You Well," Kate Baer takes emails and comments she has received (some of them sweet, but most hateful) and turns them into artistic poetry. I love that we can see the before and after (something that isn't always the case with black out poetry) and even though it's so satisfying to see how Kate turns some of these mean messages into something wonderful, it's also very sad to see all the hatred that exists into the world.
Nevertheless, I will go now and read everything else that Kate Baer has ever written!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!
This is a great book of erasure poetry in which the author offers up first a message attacking her, and then her erasure of much of the messages' language, revealing new texts. This is a good introduction to erasure poetry, which has been on the upswing in recent years and is becoming more noticeable in poetry.. Baer's erasures are strong and sure, and creative and thoughtful.
