This was good but weird, like all Lutz's work. She has a fabulous knack for writing quirky-strange offbeat characters that are endearing and irritating in equal measure, yet never fail to fully engage me or hook themselves into my imagination. Things got a little strange, even for one of her novels, near the end and I had to shake my head a number of times, but on the whole I do think it all worked.
Her writing style is very easy to fall into and her characterizations are top-rate. I found the concept behind this one original and intriguing, and the way things unfolded left me wondering for a while if this was going to be black comedy, madcap adventure, or a more straightforward thriller. In the end it has elements of all three, and I think that is why I liked it so much.
It was a wild and fun ride with some surprising heartfelt moments, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Chalk up another win for Lisa Lutz!
Enjoyed this book, though the dual timelines took some getting used to. That said, I was impressed with Lutz's threading of information throughout the book. That said, after quite a twisty ride, the end was a bit of a let-down.

I loved this one. Very fast paced, had me turning pages as I tore through it – I had to see how it would end. The characters were well rounded and the narrative felt believable. Gave me chills. Solid five
Lisa Lutz does it again. I have loved and devoured everything from, The Spellman Files to The Swallows. She knows how to write a story! The Accomplice was thrilling from start to finish.
I’m sorry that this book didn’t work for me. It had a great premise, but failed to deliver. In hindsight, even the title feels misleading. I kept reading because I obviously wanted to know who'd done what, but… meh.
Luna and Owen are best friends with lots of secrets that bind them together. Most of the book alternates between past and present and Luna and Owen's viewpoints. I unfortunately am not in the consensus of having enjoyed this book, I could not relate to the main characters or the backup characters.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and give feedback on this ARC.
A tensely paced novel that explains the long Friendship between Owen and Luna. Luna has a mysterious past that she does not want to share. Owen, her best friend since they began college, is okay with Luna and her secrets. Their long friendship spans marriages, divorces, and more than twenty years. The troubling part is that death seems to follow Luna and Owen, along with secrets.
Luna and Owen have been best friends since college, and now, years later and both married, live near each other. When Owen’s wife is found murdered, all signs point to Owen, causing Luna, who has a few secrets of her own, to re-examine just how well they know each other. That’s the basic premise of The Accomplice, and that doesn’t even touch the surface of this outstanding twisty thriller. Told in a then/now format, we learn more of what happened in college and how it intersects with current events, while the author ramps up the suspense with each chapter. Absolutely loved the characters, especially Luna, and you’ll breeze through this one with plenty of twists that’ll keep you riveted, Big fan of author Lisa Lutz, and you’ll see why after you read her latest effort. Absolutely spellbinding, 5 bright stars! I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Everyone has the same questions about best friends Owen and Luna: What binds them together so tightly? Why weren’t they ever a couple? And why do people around them keep turning up dead? And the answers to these questions ended up being a bit of a disappointment for me. I really like this author but this was a hard read. There was not one likable person in the entire book and parts of the story just felt forced. The ending was a let down. It did hold my interest enough to finish it though. Thank you NetGalley for the advanced readers copy for review.
Thank you to NetGalley for the advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. I am so glad to have read this book and be given a chance to review it. The author writes with a distinctive flair and it is back in force. If you read her previous books you will be able to sink your teeth into this one. The Accomplice, the name says it all. This book starts out with a college student who has something to hide and a group of protective friends. No one knows who is in on the secret, causing uncertainty and suspicion through the next 14 or so years.. Guilt, suicide, and murder are all a part of this convoluted story. Written in two time lines, the book is still easy to follow. This is a five star read all the way through but I took one away because I was disappointed at the end.
A very mediocre novel by a pretty good author. This one seemed rushed. Needed more depth. I found the characters conveniently associated to each other in an artificial way.
I really enjoyed The Swallows so I was looking forward to this one. This was a little more unique than a lot of the mysteries I have been reading lately and I appreciated that! Didn't love all the characters but that's okay!
I enjoyed this book more than the author's prior one, The Swallows. Owen and Luna have been best friends since early college days. It's now fifteen years later and they live right around the block from each other. Both have unusual marriages When Owen's wife dies unexpectedly you immediately ask, which one did it? The author artfully flips the storyline from past to present and back again, all the details from all the characters fit together nicely right through the ending. I really enjoyed The Accomplice!
Lisa Lutz has the ability to draw us into her work even with characters we don't like. Her latest domestic drama kept me guessing till the end.
The Accomplice, was unforgettable. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel from start to finish. Lisa Lutz, knocked this one out of the park and I can not wait to see what she comes out with next.
My heart was racing early on, I absolutely loved how descriptive Lisa Lutz was, the character development was on point. I never saw the ending coming and quite frankly I had no idea what to even think or anticipate. These are incredible qualities for a novel from a readers point of view.
The best part of a concluding novel is when cant anticipate what is next. This novel has all the key elements for success ! If you have not already added The Accomplice to your pre-order, you need to do so now.
Thanks to NetGalley and Lisa Lutz for an advanced copy.
The was a character based mystery/ domestic drama. I really enjoyed the books be flew right through it.
Kept reading - and kept me guessing - until the very end! Interesting dynamic between the characters, and unique situations between everyone. A bit too many 'soap opera' elements for a perfect novel, but I would definitely pick up another book by Ms. Lutz.
Ever since the Spellman Files, Lisa Lutz has been one of my favorite authors. I loved The Swallows last year and could not wait to read The Accomplice.
Another winner. The book is the twisty tale of best friends Luna and Owen who have been best friends (and nothing more) since college. When Owen's wife is murdered however, some of the past and loyalty is called into question.
A fantastic thriller with great characters and Lutz's ear for realistic dialogue. Recommend highly.
Owen and Luna are best friends. Bffs supreme, reigning from college to present day, which is nearly two decades later. Proving everyone that a platonic friendship between two heterosexual individuals of opposite gender is, indeed, a possibility. And sure, their friendship can get somewhat claustrophobic in its closeness or even toxic in its nature and sure some people might drop dead around them, but that’s just one of those things, a regrettable byproduct of their cojoined awesomeness. Or is it?
Well, that and many other theories get put to the test when Owen’s wife is found gunned down one day. The woman was also Luna’s friend and also they are neighbors, because, you know, close like that. So naturally the spouse is the first suspect and what makes it all the more suspicious is that Owen already had someone who loved him die under mysterious circumstances back in college.
So while the cops are investigating all around them, Owen and Luna are having their own soul searching party, reevaluating their very special relationship, past and present, uncovering years fraught with well intended misunderstandings and yet, always, unwavering devotion to each other.
And then, of course, there’s Luna’s secret, something she is desperate to hide from the world and yet the only practical thing she did about it was change her last name from Brown to Grey. Because Luna Grey would fool everyone. Not very smart, Luna. But then again, it won’t be the first of your mistakes. Or Owen’s.
So technically this is a thriller and it has all the right components, the split timelines, the shifting narratives, the plot twists, etc. And there is a proper murder mystery, too, in fact. But the overall effect is very much that of a literally novel about a friendship, albeit spiced up with a murder or two. In fact, it’s weirdly jaunty about it, especially the ending.
But it’s interesting too, such a meticulous undoing and studying layer by layer such a close friendship and the way it both buoys and sinks one’s canoe, because of the inherent power exchange dynamics in such situations. Can you ever know someone too well? Are there intrinsic dangers to such a relationship? Can it turn deadly?
Well, get his book and find out. It’s worth a read, certainly. This was my first introduction to a popular genre author with a series and a number of standalones (of which this book is one) and it’s definitely a favorable one. The writing is very good, even the college age characters were tolerable, although it stands to mention the plotting was really convoluted, most likely to surprise the readers all the more. So nicely done on the literary drama side, competently twisted on the thriller side, mostly not predictable (which is always good) and an entertaining read all around. Recommended. Thanks Netgalley.
I've been reading Lisa Lutz since I first discovered the The Spellman Files. Her books always hold a particular magic for me and The Accomplice did not disappoint. I loved Luna as I have loved all her protagonists. They're smart, quirky and unconventional in all the best ways. At it's very core this is a book about the friendship between Luna and Owen. I enjoyed everything about the Accomplice and I highly recommend it! Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for allowing me to read this digital ARC. I can't wait for her next book!
