Who Has Been Up All Night Worrying? Stressing? Flipping Out?
I will confess I have! I realize now that it not only had an effect on me but on my children who are now adults. I have come a long way since then but this book still jumped out at me. I always feel God uses your issues to help others. This book helped me. I believe it can help you…
I do feel there are always going to be parts that you don’t agree with in books like this. I challenge you that if it’s a theological issue something maybe I didn’t catch that you pray on it and keep reading.
I received a complimentary ARC of this book from NetGalley on behalf of the Publisher and was under no obligation to post a favorable review.
Reduce stress and improve sleep
Among other things Laura Harris Smith, N.D., is a certified counselor, naturopathic doctor, executive producer and host of theThree and an author. With "Give It to God and Go to Bed. Stress Less, Sleep Better, Dream More". The book was published by Bethany House - Chosen Books. It contains ten chapter with topics such as "The Distraction down the Hall", "The Monster in Your Closet", or "The Writing on the Wall". Smith states her goal as a vow: "Here is my vow to you: I am devoting myself to helping you change the way you process your daytime stresses and nighttime burdens. If you will glance over this book’s chapter titles, you will notice that each one contains a preposition: “The Monsters in Your Closet.” “The Weapons under Your Pillow.” “The World outside Your Window.” “The Writing on the Wall.” The entire book is set in your bedroom, where we are going to tuck you in, get you to sleep, revive your dream life and fill your prayer life with purpose and peace. So whatever your pre-position as you begin, prepare yourself for taking a new position altogether" (in chapter 1 - The Distraction down the Hall). She is right when she writes in the same chapter: "We need to learn how to pick our battles, letting Papa God fight for us so that we are not stressed-out, worrisome, workaholic insomniacs". Smith talks openly and honestly about her own experiences. She offers videos with nightly blessings on her website for the readers. The book also contains notes for reference and further study. I really appreciated that she closes every chapiter with questions and prayer. But there are also things that might not be appreciated by every readers, e.g. in chapter 5 (The World outside your Window) she talks a lot about American politics which, in my opinion has nothing to do with sleeping well and are less relevant for readers outside of the USA. Mike Lindell's story in chapter 7 (The Junk under Your Bed) is promoting his company "My Pillow" which I did not appreciate at all. She writes also heavily about her dreams and about Mike Lindell's dreams about "My Pillow". Lastly her argumentation for being an ordained women minister has, in my opinion, nothing to do with the topic of the book which is about better sleep.

This book was very insightful. However, in some parts it felt like she was pitching me on her other endeavors. I like some of the points she made but just didn’t agree with all of her beliefs.
Wonderful book with an even greater message. Definitely made me realize the value and importance of sleep as an overall determining factor of success in other areas of my life. Since reading this book, I have made it a priority to go to bed earlier and get up much earlier to have quiet time with God before my kids wake up. Thank you for helping me realize how much sleep determines the quality of our other areas of life. Highly recommend.
I vacillated back and forth on my feelings about this book. Some spiritual things really resonated with me with the points she was trying to make about incorporating prayer and faith and God in our lives, and then the rest of the time it was a self-promotion/sales book on "buy all my other books and products, oh, and buy my friends' products too!" While personal experiences make things more real and relatable, this went beyond that for me. If the author had focused solely on her personal experiences and not product/book promotion, I would have given this a higher rating. Finally, towards the last third of the book she focused less on all those things, but there was too much of it in the book for me personally. I did highlight many of her spiritual insights and I'm glad she included a copy of the picture she had drawn about her dream with Jesus binding her wounds, that was beautiful and brought that personal experience more to life. I just wish the book had less of the other and more of the rest.
I liked the idea of this book. We all need to give our worries to God and to stress less. I appreciated some of the practical tips. I definitely appreciated the biblical counsel and all of the verses. Many of these ideas were reminders for me, and I think we all need those sometimes.
This book started out strong for me, but then the author went in a variety of directions that I did not anticipate. I should have guessed that with "dream more" there would be a section on dreams. But I did not anticipate being guided toward seeking prophetic dreams and interpreting their meaning. I am not wanting to call into question whether or not the author had these experiences or that God spoke to her in dreams. He possibly did. But I am a bit leery of seeking such experiences.
I differ with the author on several of her beliefs. She has what many would consider to be a strong, charismatic faith. I cannot join her in some of those opinions. Her perspective on spiritual warfare was intense, and I have not heard it stated that way before. While I do think God uses women in the church, I am not convinced that it should be up in front. For those that tend to align with her beliefs, they will probably be greatly blessed and encouraged by her words.
I am all for sharing experiences. After all, what has happened to us influences us. But perhaps too many examples were shared for me. I would appreciate hearing such details if I am drinking coffee with a friend. But for an author that I do not know, there was definitely a disconnect. I cannot help but question a bit of the authenticity and relevancy.
What else bothered me about this book is that the author used it promote her other books and her business. Hearing how God prompted her to create oils turned into a sales pitch. Perhaps the programs she has developed are helpful, but they were presented in a bit of a pushy way.
All in all, I appreciated all of the Scripture references. I could have benefitted from a few less examples. I am encouraged that a woman who is strong in faith can share her testimony. But everything was not quite for me.
My copy was downloaded through NetGalley. I wanted to read and review this book All opinions are my own.
I appreciate a book that approaches something from a whole-person perspective. As with all her books, Laura Harris Smith includes mind, body, spirit, diet, and environmental considerations for her readers. Good sleep impacts so many things and readers will sleep better after finishing this book.
I found the insights in this book on how to give things to God really do help. The different changes that Laura offers are ideas that I am going to work into my life.
Thank you Bethany House, Chosen Books, and NetGalley for this advance read.
Thank you to Bethany House and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Give It to God and Go to Bed by Laura Harris Smith, N.D. is an amazing Christian self-help book for people who have trouble with sleep. The story involves various chapters that deal with sleep monsters in a spiritual way. For example, some chapters focus on dreams, while others focus on prayer and unforgiveness. According to the description, the author "explains the harmful effects--spiritual, emotional and physical--of what keeps you awake."
Overall, Give It to God and Go to Bed would make the perfect gift for anyone you know is having trouble falling asleep or sleeping enough. One highlight of this book are the copious amounts of Bible verses sprinkled into the chapters. I enjoyed reading these verses and applying them to my own battle with sleep. As someone who has struggled with sleep myself and has sometimes had an unhealthy relationship with sleep, I look forward to applying the principles mentioned in this book to my own life. If you're intrigued by the description, I highly recommend that you check out this book, which is available now!
This was a good reminder of letting go and letting God. As well and when you put it down don't pick it back up agian.
I loved this title for this book and the book is a good read. For someone who has a belief system and faith but also worries, this book was a huge help.
What an peculiar idea was to apply the word of God to one of most commom and natural human habit such as to sleep. But I have to confess that is was not something I was expecting and unfortunately ddin't work for me. But Someone else may like it.
Requested this because I was going on a retreat and needed a devotional to share with my friends. Sadly retreat was cancelled but I am enjoying this a lot.
This is not what I expected. Although there is a lot of research data given, it is not a devotional, if that is what you are expecting. I was overwhelmed by all of the information. Yes, there are bible passages mentioned.
I was expecting a devotional type of text, not heavy on research.
I really enjoyed this book. Such a small sounding thing that can really give you peace and rest. Definitely enhanced my walk with God.
Laura Harris Smith’s Give It to God and Go to Bed is a well-written, uplifting book. In times of trouble and stress, we find ourselves not being able to sleep well. The author advises readers to step back and turn our troubles over to God. Full of tips and advice on how to get rid of anxiety, Smith’s book will be a book I return to often.
I’m giving this 4 stars because I think it would be very good for a lot of people. But, while some of it was very helpful, I was expecting something different.
Wow!! This book was really well written and such a good read! I love all the research put into it. Do you have anxiety and trouble sleeping? If you do this book is exactly what you need! From tips on calming the chaos in your bedroom to calming the chaos in your mind. This is a great quick easy read!
While there are some good ideas in the book, I was stressed just trying to read it. I can't recommend it but others may enjoy it.
I have mixed feelings about this book. I appreciate Smith advocating us exchanging our worries for God's weapons. I appreciate that, while much of this book is about spiritual issues, there are some practical teachings about receiving necessary sleep. I appreciate her teaching about spiritual warfare. This is a book for Charismatic Christians and there is much in the book about demonic spirits and how they act. I like her teaching on dreams, how God communicates through them, the kinds of dreams, etc. I like her teaching about dealing with those pesky voices in our head. I like her emphasis on prayer and appreciated her insight of watching the news as gathering wartime intelligence for prayer.
But I felt there are some very odd aspects included in this book on sleeping well. Smith includes much political commentary. She is free about her very pro-Trump views although she prays for all presidents, regardless of party. She believes the claims of voter fraud and irregularities, even mentioning Mike Lindell and his claims. This book seems to have gone to print before the many court decisions against those who claimed voter fraud. I find it odd that someone who advocates insight into spiritual issues was taken in by the false and unprovable claims made by those unhappy with the results of the 2020 US presidential election. I also found it odd Smith mentions her oils and books so often. Having been a retailer myself (owning a Christian bookstore for 33 years) it seemed like some of this book was a sales pitch for readers to buy her other products. But then, she also has a sales pitch for her good friend, Mike Lindell's pillow, and spends pages detailing his story. I found it also odd that she includes much about her ordination as a woman, the criticism and her defense. There is also teaching on the baptism of the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues and a section on how the US states got their borders.
If you want information on getting a good night of rest, you'll find some here. You will also find material that, to my mind, didn't have much to do with sleeping at all.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.
