Mary is the Miller’s daughter. Although young herself she is left to care for her siblings when her father runs off with another woman and her mother dies. Turned out of her home she is forced to take them to a foundling home. Fortunately it is run by kind nuns and although they miss their home they are well cared for. Then the miller turns up with his new wife, a step brother and another child on the way and demands that his children are returned to him. That is as much of the plot as I should share! I really enjoyed this book, I have read many by this author and would recommend this book.
Mary and her siblings are left to the Foundling school after their father the Miller leaves the family and then the mother dies. Mary is left to attend to the younger ones until her father returns with a new woman and child. The author describes the hardships and everyday life itself beautifully. She obviously likes people watching! The only disappointment was that it ended. Recommend
The Miller's Daughter by Elizabeth Gill
When Mary's father, the miller, leaves his family and runs away with another woman, Mary and her siblings are left to weather the storm. But when their mother dies soon after, the children, alone and unwanted, are sent to the Foundling School for Girls to start a new life.
I very much enjoy books by this author . She has the knack of getting the area she writes about ( North East) and the time in a really believable way.
Not my first title by her ,and certainly not my last.
Another great storyline that has heartbreaking moments , courage , and sheer tenacity. A great read.
Enjoyed this read following Mary the Miller's daughter who finds herself and her siblings at the founding school run by the kind nuns after her father has disappeared and her mother sadly dies not long after, life is hard for them and the nuns and the villagers help them overcome their hardship, a story of community and village spirit, can Mary ever have a happy life again? Twists and turns that keep you reading
This is just the writing style I love to read and this did not disappoint.
It is set in 1861 in Durham and is based around a foundling school that has Ben set up for homeless kids.
It's an easy reading style . With what you would expect from a story set in these times. Community, loyalty anf family at the forefront.
