This is a new to me author, and the first in the 'Supernatural Singles' series. I thoroughly enjoyed this quirky take on the world of witches, shifters, and other assorted Supes - as they are called.

Violet Maxwell is the eldest triplet, but she's known as the Maxwell Dud because she doesn't have magic like her mother & sisters. That soon changes when she (literally) runs into childhood friend Lincoln Thorne at a ski resort. The two have a prickly past, but manage to work through their differences to find their happily ever after.

The story serves as a set up for the rest of the series, and introduces several minor characters that I really hope get their own stories. All of the characters are interesting, and show real growth by the end. I am looking forward to seeing how things progress in the next book.

As this is a romance, there are 'steamy' scenes, but they are on the mild side compared to some. There's nothing too hot or weird, and things are handled with delicacy.

This was a very quick read, so if you are looking for a fun escape for a few hours, I recommend picking this one up.

This book was a happy surprise, a fun, flirty paranormal romance with stakes that were not too high, lots of heat and sparks (literally) between the MCs, and a side cast of characters that I also liked and look forward to reading more about. As it happens, my previous read also featured three sister witches but that one had a 300 year old curse, a truly evil villain, and was much darker in tone, so Not the Witch You Wed was exactly what I needed as a follow up.

Violet is the firstborn of a triplet of witches and would be the natural heir to her grandmother, the "Prima" of witches, except that she's a magical dud. Linc is the alpha of all of the North American shifters, whose father was a cruel, violent leader and who has dedicated his life to changing the power structure of the pack to prevent his father's abuses from happening again. These two have a history dating back to their childhood, that includes a teenage relationship that ended when Linc stood Violet up the day they were supposed to run away together. Now, 14 years later, both find themselves needing to prove that they are in a serious relationship, so of course, this being a romance novel, they come up with the brilliant idea of a fake relationship with each other in order to buy themselves time to find a different solution. After all, with their difficult history, surely they will be able to maintain emotional distance. However, when Violet's previously absent powers suddenly start showing up with a vengeance, maybe it's time to reassess that fake dating plan.

In addition to a fun romance, the book also featured strong relationships between Violet, her 2 sisters, her grandma, and her friends. I'm looking forward to continuing the series, presumably with Violet's two sisters finding love also. My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.

This was such a fun read! I've read a number of witchy paranormal romances recently and this was by far my favorite! I do expect a fair amount of exposition and world-building in a new series (especially a paranormal/fantasy), but I was a bit overwhelmed with information and characters at the beginning. However, I do think it pays off in the end and seems to be setting up a multi-book series (at least I hope so!). I will definitely be recommending Not The Witch You Wed to readers frequently!

Happy pub day to NOT THE WITCH YOU WED by April Asher! Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for my e-arc in exchange for an honest review. This book publishes TODAY!

This book is a first in a new paranormal romance series from the author! I really enjoyed it! Give me all the angsty wolves and witches 😆

I really enjoyed Violet as a main character. She was fiery, knew what she wanted, didn’t take no deals from anyone, but also had a very caring side, as evident from her work with children. Lincoln was also a great male lead, as he was fighting his own demons- wanting to tell Violet the truth about their past, but literally unable to… or so he thinks until close to the end of the book when he realizes something about their relationship. The sexual tension, buildup and chemistry between both of them was also 🔥🔥🔥

I am not always the biggest fan of the fake dating trope, but in this case, I really thought it was done well. You could clearly see that even though Violet didn’t feel like she could trust Lincoln again, her feelings for him were still very real.

I also really enjoyed the relationship Violet has with her sisters (they are triplets!) and her best friends. They have alot of fun together, make fun of each other, but are always there for each other. I can’t wait for the next book!!

Thank you St. Martin’s Griffin for the [gifted] eARC of NOT THE WITCH YOU WED.

NOT THE WITCH YOU WED begins with a crash-course world-building with the magical system and supernatural hierarchies quickly introduced. I had a bit of whiplash and was a little bit turned off by this (I had to google what a succubus was) but once I got the hang of this magical world, I really enjoyed the story!

At its heart NTTWYW is a fake-dating/second-chance romance trope which are my two favorite tropes! While the misunderstanding of Violet and Lincoln’s past could have easily been cleared up, there were magical reasons that prevented it from happening.

NTTWYW is lighthearted and funny. I found myself chuckling at some of the witty jokes and pranks played by some of the child side-characters. I loved that Violet’s sisters also had interesting character arcs and I’m assuming (and hoping) that this means that Olive and Rose Maxwell have their own books in the future!

NOT THE WITCH YOU WED is out February 8, 2022!

Fun concept and characters in this paranormal romcom!

Violet Maxwell is a magic-less witch. She's the eldest of her magical triplet sisters, but the magic seemed to skip her altogether. She's mostly made peace with her middle sister, Rose, taking the job of Prima of the Supernatural Council instead of her. But, when she runs into a blast from her past, the council is breathing down her neck about finding a mate, and her magic decides to appear after more than 3o years, she's not sure what to do.

Lincoln Thorne is a wolf shifter and the Alpha of the North American Pack. He and Violet were childhood rivals-turned-sweethearts, until he broke her heart by walking away from her, without explaining why. Now, after seeing her again, and with the Elders all in his business about finding a mate before his next birthday, he's starting to feel like he and Violet could help solve each other's problems. But, she doesn't trust him, and he has a lot of work to do to get her to even consider fake dating him, much less to pursue anything real.

Linc and Vi's chemistry was ON FIRE, but there was so much baggage and unexplained hurt between them, that it wasn't enough to change Vi's mind. Until it was. It took a lot of build up before she was willing to let things happen between them, and even then, it was only as a "benefit" to their agreement, and it wasn't supposed to mean anything. But, neither of them could fight their connection for long, though they were both the MOST stubborn people on the planet.

The side characters here were WONDERFUL, including Vi's sisters, grandmother, and best friends, and Linc's 2nd in command. I'm very excited to get their stories in the future. The triplet bond between the sisters was so fun to see, and I loved how they were so different but always there for each other.

This book was very enjoyable, with cool creatures of all kinds, and interesting and unique societal rules that govern the Supernatural citizens. I will definitely be looking forward to more books in this world!

I just love a good paranormal romance and thoroughly enjoyed this story! Violet is the oldest of triplets and a witch without a known power. Lincoln is a wolf shifter with a complicated family history and the alpha of his pack. Both are under pressure to find mates or have one chosen for them.

This book had some of my favorite tropes: first love, second chance and fake dating. It was so interesting to learn about the paranormal world this author has created which also included vampires and angels. The story had lots of tension, flirty banter and some steam. For both Lincoln and Violet there was an underlying theme of believing in yourself and finding your own path. There was some great secondary characters too that I hope to see more of in future stories. I loved the epilogue and I'm looking forward to book two. Thank you to the publisher for my e-copy of this book.

This was a very refreshing take on the paranormal romance genre. It reads like a contemporary romance wherein the characters just happen to be magical. Violet and Lincoln were childhood sweethearts had planned to runaway together when they were eighteen. Violet was the eldest daughter in a magical family with seemingly no magic herself, while Lincoln was the heir apparent to his wolf pack. Lincoln never shows on that fateful night and the two drift apart until reuniting as adults. Violet is now far less magical than she appears and Lincoln has been regretting their parting from all those years ago. Thrown together under the ruse of a fake relationship the two must figure out where they stand now and whether they are in fact each other's perfect match. With magical politics, family drama, and fun banter, Not the Witch You Wed is an easy recommendation for a variety of readers.

This is the first in the Supernatural Singles series, and my first by the author.

Violet Maxwell is the firstborn witch and should be next in line to be the Prima, but there's just one problem....she doesn't have any magic. Or does she? She's put on the spot by the magical council who want her to get herself hitched as her 'firstborn duty' but Violet has zero interest in that nonsense.

Wolf shifter and Alpha, Lincoln Thorne has also been given the 'get bonded or else' ultimatum and needs a way to buy himself more time.

Despite the fact that Linc broke Vi's heart when they were teenagers, and she hates him with the fire of one thousand suns, they end up agreeing to fake date to get the council off their backs. Of course, all that forced proximity and pretending for the cameras brings back their old feelings.

I wanted to love this one so badly. I love a witchy story, adore enemies-to-lovers and can't get enough of fake dating. Plus paranormal urban fantasy romance is right up my alley! But I just had a hard time really caring much about the story. The characters weren't bad, in fact, I found them rather likable. It had its moments, but the story was just so predictable. I didn't feel like there was enough conflict to actually make it interesting.

Anyway, it wasn't terrible, I just had such high expectations for this book and had been really looking forward to it for months so was disappointed that it fell a bit flat for me.

Not the Witch You Wed is the first book in the new Supernatural Singles series by April Asher. It follows Violet Maxwell, a magic-less witch, and Lincoln Thorne, a wolf shapeshifter, as they navigate old supernatural laws and end up in a fake relationship. When Violet's magic surfaces for the first time ever they start to realize that this relationship might not be as fake as they think.

CW: abusive parent (past)

I love a good witchy romance and this was full of humor. I loved Violet's snark, though at times I wished she would have been a bit nicer. The world-building was well done, but it did take me time to figure out what supernatural existed in this world and how it worked. I appreciated how Lincoln was striving to make the supernatural world a better one, just like the real world needs to be made better. I also loved having a curvy heroine and that Violet was confident in her appearance and rocked her curves. I can't wait for the next book in this series!

Thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

If you’re looking for a crazy entertaining paranormal fake-relationship second-chance rom-com with witches and shifters, look no further than Not the Witch You Wed, the start to a brand new series by April Hunt writing as April Asher!

"Violet Maxwell was the one who got away. And he wasn’t just the bastard that let it happen. He was the idiot who hadn’t run after her."

As a teenager, Violet Maxwell had her heart completely broken by Lincoln Thorne. When she encounters him again as an adult, she wants to stay far away from him. Unfortunately, they’re both being forced to find their mates ASAP, and because neither has been able to find theirs, they decide to fake-date/pretend to soon be married for a while to get everyone off their backs.

There was no way this wouldn’t end in a disaster worthy of an apocalypse movie. It was Lincoln. Bane of her childhood existence. Teenage heartbreaker. Mr. Moody, Broody, and Way Too Drool-Worthy.

Not the Witch You Wed by April Asher is such a hilarious rom-com! I read this back in October, and I still remember the amount of fun I had while reading this.

HILARIOUS BANTER
I think I speak for a majority of romance readers that banter is like the spice that seasons the food, and the author brought a whole can of it into this story. The back-and-forth between Violet and Lincoln kept my heart racing and my eyes glued to the pages without being able to stop. Add to that the tension that these two had and it makes for a brilliant romance.

“I think this is the start of a beautiful friendship, Violet Ann Maxwell.”
“Or the beginnings of murder in the first degree.”

FAMILY & FRIENDSHIP DYNAMICS
Olive, Rose, and Violet—also known as the Magical Triads (Charmed, anyone?)—are triplets who couldn’t have been more different from each other. The love they possess for one another, though, is truly astronomical. I adored how supportive they are towards each other and seeing the bond between them be so strong in the pages had me wishing I had siblings of my own. Despite Violet being a witch without magic, her sisters were never mean towards her. Sure, there were some differences, but the bond that they had never let it go far.

“You bought the man a gift? For taking you to dinner? His gift is the honor of your presence and your time.”

There’s also the wonderful grandma, who’s the Prima Witch sitting in the Supernatural Council to help maintain control of the supernatural world. Edie Maxwell was a hoot! I loved her snark and her strength to always stand her ground. I also loved her wisdom that she’d impart to Violet to help guider her through everything she was dealing with.

And now come the friendships! Both Lincoln and Violet had their own sets of friends who were amazing, funny, and so incredibly supportive. Violet has a virgin succubus as a friend who also has a Guardian angel with Jason Momoa-like hair, and I’m here for them to get their book (fingers crossed they’re endgame)! I loved the dynamics of their trio, and I’m hoping we get to see more of it in the coming books!

WORLD
This supernatural and magical world has so much to unpack. Despite this book being a stand-a-lone and having a HEA, I’m sure the author will have her hands full with so much she could include in the rest of the series. There are so many supernatural creatures that I hope we get to learn more of!

I loved how fast-paced the author maintained this story. It could have fallen into the slow spectrum, but it just flew right by! The amount of things happening in this book will keep you magically entertained. I do think the beginning was incredibly fast and would have loved just a bit more time to understand the whole power structure going on, but thankfully, as the story progressed, it’s easier to put into place.

ROMANCE
I know I touched on the banter earlier, but the core of the romance was just as sweet and endearing. I kind of liked that Violet was very hesitant towards Lincoln; the guy did obliterate her teenage heart. But it just made seeing them reconnect and slowly begin that trust again all the sweeter. The passion and spark between them never left; it just escalated even more! I was so happy to see Lincoln earn his way back into Violet’s trust. He was just the sweetest towards her!

"She’d never been magicless to him. Even when she hadn’t been in possession of her Magic."

Overall, Not the Witch You Wed by April Asher is a magical, sweet, hilarious supernatural rom-com that is perfect to read during this month of love and friendship.

Much like the cover suggests, this is a hilariously funny second-chance fake-dating paranormal rom-com. If that sounds like trope soup, well, it is, but it’s also extremely tasty.

“Congratulations, Wolfman. You’re officially fake-dating the Not-So-Magicless Maxwell.”

Violet and Lincoln grew up together. They’d been childhood enemies, then friends, then high school sweethearts… until the day they planned to escape his toxic dad, and Lincoln didn’t show. Fourteen years later, he’s now the Alpha of the North American Pack and she’s, well, still the Magicless Maxwell. As the eldest of a set of triplets, Violet should have amazing powers in preparation for assuming the role of Prima, the head witch, from her grandma. Except she’s a dud with absolutely no magic whatsoever. Her next youngest sister stepped up, instead becoming the heir apparent while Violet avoided as much hobnobbing as possible. But with her sister’s betrothal to a European alpha with political aspirations, Violet’s stuck mingling with the paranormal ruling class, including Lincoln. The attraction’s still there but the trust sure isn’t. When they both get ultimatums about their marital status, however, a fake relationship sounds the answer to both their problems. After all, they’re both over each other, right?

“We have this special thing between us, sweetheart. It’s called mutual agitation. If I wasn’t pissing you off, we wouldn’t be us.”

From his first scene, though, it’s clear that Lincoln’s never gotten over Violet. He knows he hurt her badly though for plot reasons he can’t explain what happened. In the intervening years, he’s dedicated himself to modernizing the shifter power structure. Lincoln inherited the position from his father, and unlike him, he’s working to dismantle the traditional power structure (council of Elders, alpha inheritance) into a, I kid you not, “shiftocracy,” which basically means that the packs will elect their own leaders. On the complete other end of the spectrum, Violet works as a bartender at a paranormal bar and also volunteers at an after-school program for kids. So, yes, both of them are just unrealistically good people, but whatever, it works. What also really works is their chemistry and their banter. Violet’s sarcastic and not afraid to tell Lincoln exactly what she thinks of him. Rather than turning him off, her honesty is downright refreshing, considering that most people don’t feel comfortable directly contradicting someone so powerful. He doesn’t see Violet as any less, however, magic or no, nor does he think that she needs him to fight her battles for her; he knows she’s perfectly capable of doing that on her own. But no matter how hot the chemistry is between them, Violet can’t bring herself to trust Lincoln and risk breaking her heart again.

“Then keep your spine straight, your chin high, and don’t let that mouth of yours run away.”
“It doesn’t run. Sometimes it . . . skips.”
Edie cocked a silver eyebrow.
“Saunters?” Vi corrected. “Okay. On occasion, it may speed-walk, but I can’t always control it. It has a mind of its own.”

Luckily that angst is leavened with plenty of humor. From the chapter titles to quirky things like Violet naming her newly awakened magic “Sparky,” there’s a lot of humorous touches throughout the book. The secondary characters are fun as well, including Violet’s sisters Rose and Olive, but especially Grandma Evie. It’s obvious from the first chapter or so what’s going to happen in the book, but watching Grandma Evie gently (or not so gently) nudge Violet along down that path, combined with humor, made the journey a lot of fun.

Some of the plot bits don’t work so well for me. I particularly didn’t like the curse that kept Lincoln from telling Vi why he didn’t show up (or the anticlimactic way that problem is solved). I also didn’t like that Violet didn’t stand up to her mother more. Her mom treats her as a disappointment and is frankly a terrible human being, as far as I can tell. I mean, she’s so awful that when Violet tells her she’s dating Lincoln, her mother chastises her for joking and trying to steal attention away from her soon-to-be-married sister. Sure, the rest of her family has her back, so I guess she needed some reason to doubt herself? Whatever the reason, I really didn’t like it.

Overall, though, this was a quick and light read, full of humor, chemistry, and tropes! Definitely recommended if you’re looking for a fun paranormal romcom.

I received an advance review copy of this book from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

If you are someone who loves supernatural characters, this book is a must. I love how the plot had witches, wolves, and vampires. The triplets were such fun witches, and I enjoyed Violet and Lincoln's enemy to lover trope. Lincoln being a wolf shifter added some fun layers to their story as well. The epilogue left us with our next story line, so I assume there will be a book per sister!

This was such a fun romcom featuring a magic-less witch and wolf shifter! Violet is a witch who was born with no magical abilities and Lincoln is the alpha of the wolf shifters. They both are required my supernatural laws to be mate bonded by a certain age, but both have their own reasons for not wanting to just yet. They hatch a plan to fake date to appease the supernatural elders who are enforcing the laws. They both start developing real feelings and Violet's magic starts manifesting for the first time, so things get complicated.
I adored all of the characters in this book, and there are a lot of them
It got a little bit confusing at times because there are so many characters and so many things happening. Violet has amazing character growth through her journey of finding her magic and I loved her relationships with everyone around her. Ughhhhhhh Lincoln...I love him. He is the sweetest alpha wolf shifter ever to exist and is Violet's biggest supporter even when she has no idea. Their banter in the beginning is so sassy and funny and I loved the quick enemies to lovers.

Of course, I enjoyed this book, paranormal with some rom-com, I'm all in. I enjoyed this world where the supernatural and regular humans live among each other. I love all the characters we meet in this book. The sisters, friends, her grandmother. I can't wait to see whose book we get next in the series.

Violet Maxwell also known as the Maxwell Dud, does her best to stay out of the spotlight and closed off from most of the supernatural. While attending the announcement of her sister's Witch Bond, she bumps into alpha wolf shifter Lincoln Thorne. The guy who broke her teenage heart.

When the two are forced to find mates by Supernatural Laws, Violet and Lincoln agree to fake-date in order to buy themselves some time.

But the sudden appearance of Violet's magic complicates things, as well as those old feeling they had for each other. But old secrets keep Violet from fully trusting Lincoln. Blinding them both from seeing what they truly are to one another.

Thank you so much to St.Martin's Press, the author and NetGalley for this ARC to review.

Not the Witch You Wed by April Asher is the first book in the new paranormal romance Supernatural Singles series. I’m not totally sure but I believe that the Supernatural Singles series will be like a lot of romance series and the main characters will change with each new book of the series.

Not the Witch You Wed is actually a couple of different romance tropes in one with a fake dating storyline mixed with a second chance relationship. Violet Maxwell once had her heart broken by Lincoln Thorne when they were teenagers. Now to Violet’s dismay the She and Lincoln are being pushed to find their mates so in order to stall for time the two pretend to be dating each other.

Not the Witch You Wed by April Asher was a fun book to read with a lot of laughs in this paranormal rom-com. I really liked the characters and getting to know them and their world with the supernatural laws. I couldn’t help but root for Lincoln to make a change in their world too. The steaminess was undeniable in the second chance for this pair and I would definitely be interested to read another book in this same world.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
