I was so excited for this new series involving Wolven. This new shifter series is what all JR Ward fans wanted her to write after she first mentioned it. I really loved this book, Lydia is such an amazing character and Daniel intrigued me, with so many secrets, being together is not going to be easy, their relationship is a slow burn, there are so many things going on around them. I really liked the multiple POVs, lots of background and context, and for those who want to know, yes the BDB is involved, it's the same worldbuilding. The way this one ended will have you begging for the next one, so be aware of the cliffy. Looking forward to it, a great 5 stars start!

CLAIMED is the first instalment in JR Ward’s contemporary, adult LAIR OF THE WOLVEN paranormal, urban fantasy series-a spin off set in the author’s Black Dagger Brotherhood world. This is drifter/handyman Daniel Joseph, and scientist/wolf behaviorist Lydia Susi’s storyline. CLAIMED can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the BDB series is revealed where necessary.

NOTE: The Wolven are first introduced in JR Ward’s LOVER UNLEASHED, and first appear in THE JACKAL.

Told from third person perspective following two intersecting paths CLAIMED focuses on the search for the truth. Someone is poisoning the wolves at the wolf reserve in and around Walters, Upstate New York, and scientist Lydia Susi is desperate to uncover the truth. With the construction of a new hotel on the edge of the wolf preserve, Lydia is determined to prove the people responsible are the same people connected to the chain of hotels. Daniel Joseph, a new handyman at the Wolf Study Project (WSP) has caught the attention of our story line heroine but someone else has targeted our heroine in the process. As the number of bodies connected to the WSP begin to pile up, Lydia is determined to prove the guilty party is part of the hotel chain, and responsible for poisoning the animals she loves. What ensues is the slow building romance and relationship between Daniel and Lydia, and the fall-out as something more sinister is working behind the scenes to take down our story line couple, and the wolves in the Wolf Study Project.

Meanwhile, Xhex, beloved shellan of the Black Dagger Brother John Matthew begins to relive the nightmares of her time at the Sympath colony, a time that is about to come full-circle. Unable to get a straight answer from her brother, she is sent on a mission that will bring her up close and personal with an experiment she thought was long forgotten. JM, Blay, Rehvenge and Vishous make a cameo appearance

CLAIMED is a slow building and twisted story of secrets and lies; of power and control; of specieism, experiments, betrayal and mistrust. JR Ward pulls the reader into an imaginative and dramatic tale of intrigue, murder, and the supernatural. The romance takes a back seat to the story line premise as the author will not be focusing on one couple per book but a continuing saga of events. CLAIMED ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

After starting the last new series by Ward and really enjoying it only for nothing else to come out I was kinda so-so about starting this one. I hate to be left hanging. But I was in the mood for a paranormal and the cover is really good so I thought, what the hell, let's give it a try.

I am so glad I did. It is a great start to her new The Lair of the Wolven series. She better not leave me hanging with this one.

From the start, the story is going and going.

I just loved the characters and enjoyed how the author kept feeding us more and more about the story arc. You really feel like you've gone on a journey with these characters. I really think you'll enjoy the two main characters and I feel most of the book is really only about them with others thrown in to push the story alone.

I will have to say that the only thing I was unhappy with is that the series seems to be mostly about Lydia and Daniel. I sometimes have trouble with the same characters going on and on. Now I'm not 100% about that since I don't know what book two is about but I will say that Claimed ended on a cliffhanger so...

I do think if you enjoy paranormals you'll enjoy this one too.

Claimed is a brand-new series set in the Black Dagger Brotherhood world. The main character in this story is Lydia, she works on a preserve for wolves and when a hotel chain purchases land right next to the preserve, things start to go downhill quick. Lydia is very passionate about the wolves and their habitat, which is more than understandable. When things start to go downhill, the wolves are threatened and so is Lydia’s life, and the new hire Daniel is there to save her.

Claimed starts off quickly and jumps right into the action. The writing and story flows well. I was very intrigued to see the inner workings of what Lydia does with the preserve and keeping these wild wolves safe. I really enjoyed that part of the story. I had a little bit of trouble fully connecting with the pov, but it didn’t stop me from enjoying the book and the story.

I will admit that I’ve only read the first book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, and I had thought that Claimed was the start to a new series, which it is but it is also pretty connected to the BDB series in a way that I was confused on quite a few things. That is on me, and I would highly suggest reading the BDB series before diving into Claimed.

Overall, I really enjoyed the story, and I am interested to see where J.R. Ward will take the story in the next book, though I will be catching up on the BDB series beforehand.

The Black Dagger Brotherhood was one of my first introductions into both the world of paranormal writing and romance. I was consumed, so I expected to LOVE this. New series, JR, and my favorite of all paranormal tropes- shifters. And, there were certainly parts I enjoyed. I’m a huge JR Ward fan, but it’s been a minute since I’ve read one of her books, or a book told from the 3rd person. That, the careful and thoughtful world building meant it took me a minute for this to sink its teeth into me. JR has such an incredible writing style and such a unique voice. The atmospheric world building, complex and mysterious characters, clever plot twists ad pacing, the right dash of snark, and all those charms were at work in Claimed. But, it just didn’t hook me like I wanted, or expected- particularly when I realized this was not a similar format as BDB- namely that this is not a standalone story. Because of that structure, the romance is a much slower burn, and the plot more slowly meted. The writing a times so detailed it was distracting rather than immersive. But, the general story was interesting though. Lots of mystery and curiosities. JR is always a great plot technician, and that is the biggest strength of this book.

While this is marketed as a new series, there is some tie in (though Xhex) to the BDB world and a lot of the world building overlaps. Personally, I’m not sure I’d recommend this to people who haven’t read BDB- you may be able to catch on, but I think there might be parts that are just less engaging when you aren’t connected to those characters already. And, again, this is not the same format as BDB- ie one couple per book. So, the end isn’t a completion of one love story or a HEA just yet. This book reads a lot like a very extended exposition for what’s to come. Hopefully JR can get this wolf in the right direction and capture that BDB-esque magic.

Sarah – ☆☆☆☆
As a diehard BDB (Black Dagger Brotherhood) fan who has re-read my series favourites more times than I want to admit, I was so excited to receive an ARC for this new spinoff series.

It isn’t until the very end of this book that the connection between the two series becomes clear. This book focuses on Lydia, a wolf researcher working in a rural game preserve. Most of the book follows Lydia as she attempts to protect her wolves from habitat destruction. Intermittently, Lydia’s story is interrupted by brief scenes from the BDB mansion, where Xhex is experiencing psychosis and attempting to discover more about the experiments done on her in the past.

Lydia’s story builds very slowly. In fact, this is a surprisingly slow read. From financial concerns to poisoned wolves, small problems in Lydia’s workplace begin to build until she is forced to rely on her center’s handyman, Daniel, to keep her safe when the threats become personal. As this is set in the BDB world, I kept waiting for action scenes and supernatural excitement that didn’t happen until the very end.

I didn’t realise until the end that this book is the start of a longer story arc for Lydia and Daniel. Where the BDB books were classic paranormal romance with a new feature couple in each book, it seems that this whole series will belong to Lydia and Daniel. It’s only in the last 20%, that readers begin to understand how Lydia and Daniel might connect to the BDB characters. I found the ending frustrating, especially as an ARC reader, because it ends just when the book starts to get exciting. We’re left with a million questions and the promise of at least a few answers in the next book. The result is a very slow first book that feels like a 500-page tease. I like where the series is going but I don’t feel like I got much of anything out of the first story.

Longtime fans of the WARDen's BDB series no doubt have a few questions before picking up CLAIMED, not that they'll hesitate in their grabby-hands action. The following Q&A is for both longtime fans and new readers.

1: Is it necessary to read BDB first?
Eh. I'm on the fence here. This is marketed as the debut in a new series, a spin-off of the BDB. It's hard for me to be objective as I feel like a bit of a BDB expert. I do believe it would be best for a reader to have knowledge of the world building from BDB. I don't believe they need to have read every title in the series. But I do believe it necessary, not seeing this as a first in the series when it comes to connective characters and their shared world building. New readers would be lost/confused, or at least not get an emotional response reading the novel.

2: Is The Lair of the Wolven the same format as BDB?
No. Instead of a novel per couple, as the series progresses, each novel doing foreshadowing for future couples, this novel/series focuses on Lydia and Daniel. A progressive romance.

3: Is CLAIMED paranormal romance?
Not by my estimation – I felt this more Urban Fantasy, which isn't a bad thing, as that happens to be one of my favorite genres. If you're looking for some steamy action like in earlier BDB novels, you're not going to find it. There's a slow-burn vibe shared between Lydia and Daniel, not necessarily an overtly erotic one.

4: What is the tie between the series?
Xhex. I won't go into detail as it revolves around the actual plot, other than explaining how it ties to her nightmarish captivity in a clinical setting.

Straight out the gate, I'd read the WARDen's shopping list and find it entertaining. Her voice, the witty comebacks, intriguing way she writes the world around her characters, the badassery, it's all there on the pages. But I will be honest, I found CLAIMED a little dry, slow and meandering, not truly invested in the story as I would be with the brothers. Simply because it's not a one and done story connected to the next and the next by a common theme, but a series unto itself.

Lydia is intellectual, cerebral, highly detailed, and some of those details are not interesting in the least (not at all as interesting as say, Ward's shopping list). A wolf researcher on a nature preserve, Lydia's inner monologue is detailed, which slowed the pacing. To be honest, I just couldn't connect with her, not truly invested in her as a character as much as what was happening with the wolves.

The mystery surrounding the wolves was intriguing, carrying the story, which isn't a bad thing. Which is why I felt the novel was more urban fantasy than paranormal romance. It's not so much character-driven as plot-driven.

While thrilled to hear from Xhex, I always find Ward's format of switching between points of view jarring. When I reread BDB, I skip all the Lessors portions, and struggle in the latter books because of the upwards of 30+ narrators ping-ponging all over the place. In this case, the reader isn't sure what the connection is, so it's jarring and odd to have Lydia's story interrupted by Xhex. New readers would be LOST. Don't get me wrong, I loved being back in the mansion, seeing the brothers in action, but... while it makes sense later on in the novel, it didn't make for a smooth read.

I wanted to love CLAIMED but gave it four stars. Those four stars are out of being a total WARDen fangirl, as I think if I were a new reader, the rating would have been considerably lower. The ending isn't necessarily a cliffhanger, but the reader finally understands the world building, the characters, and how it all connects, which means book two should be a heck of a lot faster paced, more exciting, and more engaging. If I were a new reader, I would have found the sheer volume of pages tedious and exhausting to wade through, giving up before I got to the meat of the story, then missed out on what is promising to be an amazing sequel.

Fingers crossed the sequel delivers as promised.

Recommended to hardcore WARDen fantatics. Definitely not recommended to new readers. Go pick up a copy of DARK LOVER and immerse yourself in Wrath and Beth, you won't be disappointed. (Now I'm hankering to do just that.)

Last question: Would I reread it like I have the BDB (more than a dozen times for each novel up until THE KING)?
Nah. I'd reread the last portion as a refresher for the sequel, but there is no way I'd wade back through all that tedium again. Not something I enjoy admitting.

I'll be honest, I love the BDB series. I have not read them all but I've read several. I was super excited to start a new series by this author. Unfortunately, this one didn't grab my attention and hold it like I was expecting. This book was super slow to me. There was no steaminess, and I was just disappointed. I must not have read the BDB book with Xhex in it or if I did, I don't remember it. It seems like this series will revolve around Lydia and Daniel and not a new couple each book. That is fine, but I hope things speed up because if the next book is paced the same, I might have to tap out.

I received an e-ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Review, blog tour and excerpt can be found on *Milky Way of Books*

The new book of J.R. Ward follows the mysterious and untouchable Wolven. But it begins from the hard attempts of Lydia to save the wolf preservation she works for as also to unravel the mysteries of her boss, her co-workers and Daniel the new handyman who is also a loner and has more secrets than he gives.

On the other side back in BDB Mansion Xhex is dealing with her own trauma and a prophecy of Vishous that may destroy her and in some way is connected to the Wolven.

While the book was good on setting the plot and the world it felt too lacking the action we are most attuned with. There was mystery and tragedy and so good of a romance but the ending gutted me. It was a cliffhanger too!

This was an exciting read on the other hand and I can not wait to see what will happen especially after the final revelations!

I devoured this author’s BDB series and I was so excited when she announced the beginning of a new series! This book live up to all of the hype IMO. Lydia and Daniel are complete opposites of each other but they complement each other so well. Daniel is a drifter and loner while Lydia is an environmental activist. I loved seeing John Matthew, Xhex, Rehv make appearances in this book. There is something mysterious going on with the town folk and answers lead to more questions. Will Lydia and Daniel be able to protect her wolves?

My review:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Heat factor:🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Fans of the Black Dagger Brotherhood have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of this novel and the wolven. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint!

This book was amazing and sexy and full of all the angst that Ward’s fans have come to love! The question is, how are we going to make it to next summer for book two!?!?!?!

While this book to a little while to get into, once the pace picks up it’s non stop!

This is the brand new werewolf series from JR Ward in the same realm as the Black Dagger Brotherhood and this has that same feel, which I love!

Lydia is a scientist who basically starts this book by covering up some serious information pertaining to wolves, which made me instantly love her. And Daniel with all of his mysteriousness and power, yes please!

If you want a new series from a powerhouse author in paranormal romantic suspense, look no further than Claimed!

ARC kindly received for an honest review.

This was a really interesting start to a new series in this BDB spinoff world. I'm interested to see how the connection to the main BDB series plays out. I kept thinking the whole book that I knew who was what, and then I got to the end and I was totally wrong.

A really good introduction to some new characters and complexities in their worlds, and I definitely look forward to reading more. Plenty of twists and turns and some great world building going on.

Would recommend.

Wow! A FANTASTIC start to a new series. I couldn't read this book fast enough, but I also didn't want this book to end. I was completely caught up in Lydia's story. This book is part mystery, part danger and part BDB. And I was HERE. FOR. IT. Lydia worked with wolves, trying to protect them. The reader could feel her love and compassion for them. But strange things were going on around her. She found herself with 2 people she could trust, Candy and Daniel. I enjoyed the budding relationship between Lydia and Daniel. The tension between them could be cut with a knife. I enjoyed meeting these new characters and getting the lay of the land, if you will. I also liked how this story ran parallel to things happening with the BDB. But I wasn't expecting this ending! *Insert open mouth* I can't recommend this book enough! It's amazing and I need the next book ASAP!

Claimed is the first book in the Lair of the Wolven series. I expected a long set up for the story. I really did expect a cliffhanger….. But….. it still sucks!!!

This is Lydia Susi and Daniel Joseph’s (not his real name but I still don’t know his real name) his name story. There is some significance to Lydia’s last name of Susi which is Finnish for “wolf”. I am sure we will find out more in another book.

There are a lot of twists and turns and at times it felt like a roller coaster ride. The story did keep flipping back and forth from Lydia & Daniel’s story to the Brotherhood’s story. Which has been weaved into this new series.

There were little secrets revealed but not enough and I have so many questions. I can’t wait for the next book FOREVER. There will be a little wait though. It won't be here until next summer. 4.5 I CAN’T WAIT Stars

I will admit this was not exactly what I was expecting. It kind of keeps you guessing and more in the dark about what all is exactly going on until the last portion of the book. The relationship does not really get going until the latter portion as well. There is a lot of mystery, suspense, and questions. Not all of them are answered.

Lydia Susi is a scientist and researcher who works for the Wolf Study Project and is strongly against a hotel chain that is apparently destroying nearby land and maybe poisoning wolves. She finds herself embroiled in dangerous situations she never expected and is not sure what is going on behind the scenes. Daniel Joseph is their new handyman and ends up being her protector. But he seems to be more than he appears to be.

It also features Xhex and John Matthew, and Blay. And a few others. So there are some ties into the BDB and the past that are bleeding into present events.

The plotline is layered and full of possible antagonists and mysteries. With a whole cast of enigmatic characters and danger, the book keeps you trying to figure out how it all fits together. It is hard to tell who is good, bad, or even perhaps supernatural in some way. I honestly expected it to be more about wolves, but it was kind of more a murder mystery and mixed bag. I was surprised about a few twists though. But there are still plenty more questions not answered and more connections to uncover. And honestly, I was not prepared for it to be somewhat of a cliffhanger and for there to be a continuation of this couple's story. But I was satisfied enough and am definitely interested enough to read the next book and see how it plays out.

After taking a break from J.R. Ward and the BDB series since The Shadows, I was curious enough about her new series featuring shifters/wolves. However, it still takes place in the same world as the BDB. In this latest series, we're introduced to two new characters: Lydia Susi and Daniel Joseph. I found them relatable and different from Ward's past characters. Lydia was passionate but frustrated about her work as a researcher at Wolf Study Project due to various problems including an incompetent director, the building of a luxury spa resort next to the wildlife preserve, poisoned wolves, and a murder case that might lead directly to the wolves. In contrast, Daniel had his own secrets and was portrayed as someone who moved around a lot and never planned on sticking to one place for long. Lydia was attracted to him since the beginning but kept her distance because they were worked together.

At times, I felt like the romance between Lydia and Daniel took a backseat to the mystery behind what was happening to the wolves. There were intimate glances and certainly chemistry between the two but it took some time before they finally got together. It was definitely a slow burn that kept getting stronger and stronger towards the end. I did find it interesting that both characters had secrets since Daniel was keeping a major one from Lydia. As always, Ward has a tendency to focus on the world-building and this took the center stage as she provides us background and context through multiple points of view. It was also nice to see character cameos from the BDB series including Xhex and John, Qhuinn and Blaylock, as well as Rhevenge and more. It made me want to catch up to Ward's original series and see what was happening to its characters.

In the end, Claimed had plenty of twists and shocking revelations that will have you excited for more to come from this series. This book also had plenty of twists and shocking revelations that will most likely contribute to the overall world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Although the romance took awhile for me to be invested, I still appreciated that slow burn between Lydia and Daniel. They were strangers that eventually turned into friends and lovers. I did thoroughly enjoy their love story and thought their scenes together were very sexy. I'm a fan of those intimate glances and moments when characters catch each other's eyes and then look away. I look forward to seeing what J.R. Ward has in store for this series next!

"One step at a time. Cut the impossible into pieces"

I was so sure I knew who was what and behind what deeds
Crackling Crackers was I wrong - that doesn't happen often I am usually pretty good with puzzles
Lydia, our heroine, is heck bent on protecting her wolves and proving the hotel is responsible for the recent rash of poisonings. She keeps hitting walls each way she turns and just for chits and giggles the universe has decided to upend everything at the wolf sanctuary.

Daniel is just passing through and needs work - nothing long-term - just enough to get him by until the urge to move on calls on him.
He has his reasons for drifting - Nothing has ever called to him for permanence though like the fiercely sweet Lydia
But fate has other plans for him
Doesn't hurt to indulge a little though

I am excited to see where this new series takes us - I am a big fan of the paranormal genre and Ward's writing. I was a touch disappointed that this first episode was so heavy with foundation building and character introduction. The story was solid but I wanted more when it came to our couple. I felt like I had more questions than answers - yes I get that it was probably intended to read that way. Definitely a me thing.
This ends on a bit of a to be continued

quick note - the story does interconnect with the sympaths mainly Xhex for a couple of scenes. I think her past may be part of Daniel's future... IDK

J.R. Ward & Wolves, need I say more???

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💋💋💋💋💋
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📙📕📗📘📔
World building: 🌎🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: ☺️🥸😎😘😍

Favorite Quote: “There were a whole host of things a person didn’t want to hear: Your mate is missing in the field. That limb is not going to grow back. Lassiter has the remote.”

The heroine: Lydia Susi - works as a behaviorist at the Wolf Study Project, a refuge for wolves. Things have been going crazy at work lately since her boss, the director of the facility hasn’t been coming in to work much lately and she has had to do his job as well as her own. Plus a luxury spa resort is opening on the other side of their fences and they have been making noise about the safety of their clients so close to a wildlife preserve.

The Hero(es): Daniel Joseph - a drifter that applies for the groundskeeper job at the WSP. Daniel has secrets and doesn’t plan to stick around for long. He has never had a job that lasted more than 8-10 months.

The story: Wolves at the preserve are being poisoned and Lydia thinks it is the owners of the resort that are doing it. There are also the weird things going on with her boss and the fact that money has been drying up. Lydia needs to hire a groundskeeper and she hires Daniel, but things need to change.

I don’t want to go into the plot too much because this was a great story and had a few twists that I really wasn’t expecting. It was the “I see dead people” kind of surprise ending that came out of nowhere. I really liked this one and I can’t wait to read the next in 2022.

I also wanted to mention the tie-in with the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Though you don’t have to have read the BDB books to read this, because everything is explained well. However, for those that have, we get to see Xhex, John Matthew, Qhuinn, Blaylock, Rhevenge and Blade (Xhex’s brother).

The love story between Lydia and Daniel was absolutely perfect. Lots of sexy looks, pining and all the feels we like in romance books with just the right amount of steam to make it hot without being to risqué. They are a great couple and I can’t wait to see what happens next. I will definitely be continuing to read this series.

I voluntarily read & reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts & opinions are my own.

Less than a moment after finishing, what I know now will be my new addiction, my must have drug and will be a epic series, I am writing this review. Claimed was a jaw-dropping, mysterious, and amazing story that left me with a whole lot of feels!

Claimed is so much more than an epic story. Its a priceless work of fiction that I couldn't stop thinking about even when I tried putting it down to give myself a break and to make it last. There were complete moments of awe and surprise and a one particular scene that I didn't see coming and that left my mind blown! I won't get into any detail because I want everyone to pick this book up and get as excited and surprised with it as I did. I will however say, this story is connected to some of our favorite characters that I can't wait to find out what happens next. Lydia is something special. A heroine who is in a category all her own. She is fiercely protective of her wolves and just seems to enthrall everyone she meets, including us readers. I loved her right away and Danielle is the kind of hero that you don't see coming right away. He turned out to be one of my favorite heroes and I am hoping for the very best with him in future books. Fans of BDB will no doubt fall head over heels for The Lair Of The Wolven!

Claimed gets a MIND BLOWING FIVE HOLY CRAP DID THAT JUST HAPPEN STARS! Its my new favorite series and it just started! WOW!

What.
Was.
𝙏𝙃𝘼𝙏?!

𝐋𝐲𝐝𝐢𝐚 was a behaviorist and I loved her passion in protecting the wolves and their habitat. Although her impulsiveness, rash judgments and curiosity could be annoying, these traits also helped to move the story along and feed into the questions and secrets surrounding the plot. And while I'm no fan of women who know what they want, but play that they don't, I enjoyed the little flirting games she played with the hero.

𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐥 was the character who would definitely raise some eyebrows. There was obviously more to him than met the eye and I still don't quite understand who he was supposed to be. His cover story of being a drifter and handy man made me question everything. What were his motives? Who did he work for? The fact that he was sexy was an interesting bonus!

𝐗𝐡𝐞𝐱 was also featured and I practically drooled for every glimpse of John Matthew!! Seriously, what is going on with Xhex? What do the Wolven have to do with her present, her traumatizing experience with the labs, and her murky future?

𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘥 was far more than your run-of-the-mill paranormal romance. It held mystery and intrigue and suspense. I did find that it was slow to start, however, when things started to pick up, I couldn't put it down. Here I am at the end and I'm devasted to learn that I have to wait until next summer to find out what will happen next!

For lovers of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘋𝘢𝘨𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘥, 𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘥 is a must-read! And if you're anything like me, it will inspire you to give the entire series a re-read just to be able to dive back into this dark, deadly, enchanting, and binge-worthy world again!
