Mixed emotions about Over My Dead Body, the fourth book in the Detective William Warwick Series. I am a fan of author Jeffrey Archer. I thoroughly enjoyed the seven book Clifton Chronicles and the first three books in this series. The first thirty-five percent of the book was very good. I enjoyed being on the cruise ship with Beth and William. I also enjoyed the introduction of James Buchanan who aspires to be Williams counterpart in the FBI some day. Someone dies on the ship and James helps William. After the ship arrives in New York. Everything shifts and we do not hear from James except for a phone call in the latter part of the book.
The plot then shifts to introducing the new Unsolved Murders Unit with Warwick now Chief Inspector with a team of four officers. Each are investigating different crimes. And of course we have the plot thickening in the chase to capture Miles Faulkner now Captain Ralph Neville. This book appears to be a transition book in the series that seems to take on too much. My thoughts are that the focus going forward will be the Unsolved Murders Unit, and Miles will sink to the background. I missed not having William’s father and sister heavily involved in the story. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next book. My thanks to Harper Collins, Harper 360 and NetGalley for an ARC of this book. The opinions in this review are my own.
3.5 stars raised to 4
Detective William Warwick is back again in the fourth book of the series. And this time he's chasing a ghost! I won't go into that, let it be a surprise. I really enjoy the character William Warwick with his "choir boy" reputation and his great deduction skills. All the characters from the series are back in this tale of mystery and murder. It just gets better with each installment of the series. I enjoyed a new character, a precocious young boy on the same cruise ship William and his wife were vacationing on. The mystery starts on the cruise.
This book could be read as a stand-alone, but I recommend you read the other books first for the background - it will make it more interesting. I find the behind the scenes views of the art world fascinating. Fast paced and entertaining.
Thanks to Harper 360 through Netgalley for an advance copy. This book will be published on October 19, 2021.

3.5 Hearts This is the 4th in the series and I have now read three of them (missed #2).
OK, here is the thing about this book. It is so busy! There is so much going on that it is honestly hard to keep track of. The stories (yes multiple) that are going on are interesting in their own right but it moves so fast and switches between the cases that I felt I needed a notebook.
Archer is a great writer and I enjoy his books so maybe I wasn’t ready to have my mind so filled with details that it threw me off a bit. With that being said I wanted to know everything. I didn’t want to put it down even though when I did I found myself reviewing who was who.
Another good story by Archer. And I look forward to more in the series.
Disclaimer:
I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I’m a big fan of Jeffrey Archer. His seven-book The Clifton Chronicles is one of my favorite series. The character of William Warwick was introduced in that series. Warwick is an emerging star in the London Metropolitan Police Force. Over My Dead Body is the fourth book showcasing Warwick's incredible crime-solving skills.
It is 1988 and Warwick has been promoted to Detective Chief Inspector. He is now heading a new Unsolved Murders Unit and the team is assigned several cold cases - each involve someone who the police believe got away with murder. In addition to his new assignments, Warwick’s nemesis, Miles Faulkner, a millionaire art collector and thief, is still on the loose. His funeral and recent plastic surgery does not disguise the fact that he is very much alive and hiding from Warwick and his team.
This latest installment is an entertaining book filled with an appealing cast of detectives as well as Warwick’s loving and supportive family and some interesting people he meets on a luxury cruise ship traveling from London to New York where a murder takes place. While the story in book #4 is a complete one, with some heart-pumping action, it is designed to keep you wanting (and reading) more. It’s planned to be an eight-book series and I’m committed to it. While you can certainly jump on board with Archer’s latest book, this is one of those series that you should read from the beginning. Jeffrey Archer writes in such an effortless manner that I flew through each book. As the action was heating up and the detectives had to play the waiting game, I loved this line – “surveillance was a cat and mouse game and patience was the cheese in the trap.” It’s fast-paced and smart writing.
This book is full of action. Constant adventure. I have grown to love the characters and do not want it to end. The writing just flows. Very abrupt ending means there must be another book coming.
Another winner from Jeffrey Archer! Although part of a series, this book can easily be read as a stand-alone because the author includes details from previous books. Twists and turns are trademarks of this author and he does not disappoint in Over My Dead Body. Thanks to #NetGalley and OverMyDeadBody for this advanced digital copy.
Over My Dead Body by Jeffrey Archer is another installment of the series in which Chief Inspector William Warwick attempts to capture the shady, elusive Miles Faulkner.
The novel begins with William and his wife on holiday on a transatlantic cruise on the Pilgrim line, which is owned and operated by the Buchanan family, who happen to be on board en masse for an annual shareholder meeting. This is a very interesting beginning to the story which continues with a death on board - one which has many unanswered questions. However, after several chapters, Mr. Archer switches to Warwick’s attempt to capture the elusive Faulkner.
Also included are several cold cases assigned to other members of the police department - all of which make for uninteresting and dull reading.
After a very promising beginning, the novel no longer piques a reader’s interest and indications are that this saga will continue in a future novel.
I thank NetGalley and Harper Collins for the opportunity to read and review this book prior to its publication on October 19, 2021.
I used to read a lot of Jeffrey Archer's books when I was younger. His books are always intense and the writing is engaging! So I was excited to read his latest book in the Detective William Warwick series.
This was actually book four in the series and I have not read the other books yet. This book started off with an interesting between Detective Warwick and a young man on a cruise ship. I liked it and it did held my interest until a plethora of characters were introduced into the story. It was too many in a short time and the writing felt choppy. It left me confused.
While the premise of the story was really intriguing, unfortunately this book wasn't for me.

***Thank you Harper Collins Canada for this gifted review copy to read. All opinions expressed are my own.***
This is another installment of the Detective William Warwick books but doesn't start as abruptly as the last one did. The Metropolitan Police set up a new Unsolved Murders Unit—a cold case squad—to catch the criminals nobody else can. Millionaire art collector Miles Faulkner, who was convicted of forgery and thief, was killed two months ago. One wonders why his lawyer still is working so hard to represent him. William and his wife meet a very wealthy family whose family members are battling for power and will turn to murder. Detective Chief Inspector Warwick uses the skills of an ex-undercover agent Ross Hogan to help solve these murders. I was not a huge fan of this book.

Detective William Warwick #4
An unputdownable story of murder, revenge, and betrayal from international number one bestseller Jeffrey Archer.
This is the fourth in a series and I do believe it is helpful if you have read the others first. I really enjoyed the story and the face paced nature of it. It will take you across the world, and into worlds, you will never dream of. It starts on a cruise ship where the DCI and his wife are trying to have a lovely holiday together. But a mysterious death on board and he puts his detective hat back on and it all spirals from there.
Thanks to Harper Collins and NetGalley for the ARC. I will recommend this book and look forward to #5 of 8 books planned to be published.
5star
Over My Dead Body is the latest book in Archer’s series of Inspector Warwick mysteries. Warwick is still hunting Miles Faulkner, his art thief nemesis from previous books. Not only must Warwick attend to recapturing Faulkner, he has been newly appointed to a cold case unit which the Chief expects to lead to the capture of a handful of murderers who had escaped from Justice. Given his multiple assignments, Warwick must divide the work with his capable task force. There are multiple small mysteries for Warwick and his crew to solve, from figuring out whether a shipboard death was a murder to saving the life of a bride whose husband has murderous intentions.
One important comment on the plot is that the story probably takes place in the 1990’s, although that is not made clear. My guess as to the setting is based on the fact that there are no cell phones and Warwick is supposed to be about 35 and grew up in the 1960’s.
Archer’s writing is peppered with clever solutions and tricks for each mystery Warwick and his fellow officers must face. He also allows us to really care about the characters, causing us to be invested in their successes and their happiness. You will cheer the final outcome.

I haven't read Archer in a few years, and now I can't remember why not! Excellent tangle of a story! Set in several locations in 1988, the protagonists are all working for The Yard. The senior officer is DCI Warwick who is under a superintendent known as The Hawk. Lots of colorful characters on both sides of the law in a tense atmosphere with many deadlines. Superb storytelling that caught me up in its web and wouldn't let go!
I requested and received a free ebook copy from Harper 360, HarperCollins via NetGalley. Thank you!
A big thank you to Harper Collins Audio for the chance to read and review Over my dead body by Jeffrey Archer.
This is the fourth instalment of the Detective William Warwick saga and a real rollercoaster of a book.
As usual in this twisty thriller from the Master of the pen, there's murder, revenge and betrayal I think this book could be read as a standalone, but for the fullest enjoyment I would recommend starting at the beginning of the series.
William starts off on a cruise liner to New York with his wife for a rare break, but before long becomes embroiled in death on the ship and then flies back to London to continue investigations into the previously thought dead Miles Faulkner. We meet all the characters from the series and find out how their lives are moving on with various side stories along the way, bring it all to life. A thoroughly exiting read and looking forward to book 5. What is going to happen next?
The fourth in the William Warwick British detective series finds Beth and William on a luxury ship to NY thanks to Christina Faulkner. Seems Christina can only schedule her sham marriage to Captain Ralph Neville (AKA Miles Faulkner) during this time.
Beth is planning visits to all the renowned art museums and tourist attractions, while William can't resist inserting his detective skills into a death on board.
Members of the Buchanan family are aboard their own liner when the chairman suddenly dies during dinner. William has formed a mentor type bond with the grandson. They race to prove the death wasn't natural causes and that there's a murderer on board.
Back in London, Hawksby has the newly formed Unsolved Murders Unit tackling five separate cold cases. William heads the team, Detective Inspector Ross Hogan is second in command, and includes DS Paul Adaja, DS Jackie Roycroft and DC Rebecca Pankhurst. Ross is still playing his "undercover" role, just more literally.
The cold cases are varied and interesting. It's so refreshing to have new mysteries to solve while the illusive criminal, Miles Faulkner, continues his masterpiece art schemes.
The greedy Booth Watson QC is still tied to Faulkner. Christina is equally financially tied to her "deceased", not quite divorced, about to wed, cunning husband. However, she has some new schemes and deceitful tricks of her own in play.
There's another attempt at arresting Faulkner at his new inpenatrable fortress. William has jetted back and forth between countries so many times I have jet lag! Another action packed crime story that had me holding my breath till the climactic end.
Thanks to Netgalley, Jeffrey Archer, and Harper Collins Publishers for the digital advance copy of "Over My Dead Body". These are my thoughts and opinions given voluntarily.
This is the 4th book in this series, and I highly recommend you read them in order. This book continues the search and capture of Miles Faulkner, if he is still alive. Nobody is really sure. The book has several other cases going on and a former undercover person is added to the group, Ross Hogan. Interesting character and I hope he continues. He and Warwick seem to work well together. Very exciting and hard to put this one down! Looking forward to the next!
This book proves that Jeffrey Archer still has it. While there are four plot lines going on here they all come together nicely. This isn't the first story involving DCI William Warwick and it might be helpful to read the others first because there are characters and references to events from the past stories that are helpful to know. I thoroughly enjoyed this and he writes another with Warwick. Thank you NetGalley for the advanced readers copy for review.
Jeffrey Archer weaves a detailed story with a surprise ending. Overly interesting to watch the development of William Warwick who is on his way to becoming the youngest Commissioner. But first he has to blab Miles Faulkner. Lots of twists and turns, friendships and betrayals - just what you would expect from a master story teller.
Jeffrey Archer may be 80 but he has not lost his touch. Can’t wait for the next installment in William Warwick’s career..
This was the fourth in a series about William Warwick. I didn’t realize that or I would never have requested this book. I read nearly 50% and enjoyed that, but had a hard time keeping up with the characters and imagining their past relationships which were critical to the story line.
I think it would be most enjoyable for someone who had read the first three books and had seen the characters and their relationships develop.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, Harper Collins, for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. Archer does not disappoint! This book picks up right where the previous one left off and takes the reader on a wild ride across oceans and countries. Archer develops favorite characters, introduces new ones and delivers a plot that is anything but predictable. One you start this book you won't be able to put it down until the last page!
Chief Inspector William Warwick is a young DCI. Warwick and his wife are aboard a luxury cruise liner when he is asked to investigate a suspicious death. A new unsolved murders unit is set up in London and William is chosen as it’s leader. That leaves the death on the cruise liner and four cold cases to solve. True to Archer’s form, he does a magnificent job of developing numerous character studies in chapter after chapter. There are so many mysteries that you must pay close attention to who is doing what, to whom, and only guess at what is coming next. Archer is one of the best at delivering the unsuspecting at just the right time.
