This is a well-crafted story with likable characters. It gives the reader an in-depth look into the workings of the different government agencies - even ones we don't know about. The time span of the action is less that a week, but there is so much packed into that week. I had to smile at the main character, Jack Hudson. He reminded of one of the FBI men on Sue Thomas, FBEye. So when you can relate to a character it makes for more enjoyable reading.
This is the third book I’ve read by Elizabeth Goddard. This one delivered dramatic action in an interesting outdoor setting just like the previous novels. The characters were resilient and smart. They had multiple mysteries to solve. As you’re drawn deeper into the plot, these terrifying and near fatal events happen with greater frequency. You wonder how much more these characters can take. Elizabeth Goddard weaves a cross continent trail from sea-to-sea with a layover in Montana for some of the most dramatic action. It’s a breakneck race to the end to see the mystery solved.
The book is second in the Rocky Mountain Courage series and it flows seamlessly from book one. The story is based on the experiences of Erin Larson and Nathan Campbell, who were secondary characters in Book 1 of this series. Erin’s job as a criminal psychologist adds an interesting twist to the plot. Her sideline vocation is broadcasting a podcast on cold cases. She publishes each episode anonymously to protect herself and the identities of those involved.
I found the book well written. The roster of characters is interesting and I appreciated how you never knew for certain exactly who was 100% genuine or a fake with a hidden agenda. I received a print book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. #DeadlyTarget #RockyMountainCourage!
Natalie, Natalie, Natalie!!! This book! The idea of a non-governmental agency such as SNAP was so unique and fascinating, and Walters did a fabulous job creating such a fictional agency. As for characters, I fell in love with Jack right away. (Anyone else want his full backstory??) Brynn as well was a very compelling and interesting character and I loved the way their romance unfolded throughout the book. Their joint backstory about their previous romance was rather confusing to me and even after finishing the book, I'm still not sure I understand what exactly happened, which was slightly frustrating after all that romantic tension. ;) But that didn't detract much from my enjoyment of the book. All in all, Walters has written a wonderful new series debut and I cannot wait to see where this series goes!
I'm a sucker for second-chance romance. But when said romance overlaps with a gripping suspense story, I'm all in.
Walters became a favorite of mine early on, but this first book in her latest series is at a whole new level! When it comes to weaving humor into tense situations and heav[ier] themes, she's a master. And these characters--gah! Just let me pre-order the whole darn series now.
A huge thank-you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read & review this gem. I liked it so much I asked for it for Christmas and I got it! Woohoo!
I throughly enjoyed this story of espionage, government agencies, and the race to save the president. It had a great cast of characters who worked together to solve the mystery with Brynn from the CIA. I felt like they were cohesive and realistic as the team followed leads and connected the clues. I also enjoyed the way we followed way side characters for a brief moment. I liked that we got to see their side of the story. I am excited to read book two in this series!
I received an arc via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Antiterrorism is an important issue of our times, but I'm not sure things could happen as described here.
More important for the novel is the love story. It seems so be a preferred pattern lately: they once were together, broke up but by circumstances out of their control find together again.
Suspenseful, worth reading.
CIA analyst Brynn Taylor developed a new program to combat terrorism, and she invited members of foreign intelligence agencies to America to foster cooperation between countries. Now one of them, Egyptian spy Remon Riad, is missing.
Jack Hudson has been working for the Strategic Neutralization and Protection Agency (SNAP) for almost nine years and takes the lead in hunting down the missing spy. But he isn't at all pleased to find out Brynn is involved. It's hard to trust a woman who's already betrayed you.
Every lead they follow draws them dangerously deeper into an international plot. Kidnapping, murder, explosions, poisoning--the terrorists will do anything to accomplish their goal of causing a digital blackout that will blind a strategic US military communications center and throw the world into chaos.
Jack and Brynn met years ago when they were both in CIA training. It was because of her that he didn't make into the CIA. He has bitter feelings about her that he has overcome in order to work with her to stop a terrorist attack against the US.
This book was full of suspense and kept me reading. I recommend this book to all who like a good mystery. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
I was given this book by Revell Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.
Brynn is a CIA Agent working on an international program that has members of other countries' intelligence agencies in the US for training. Now one of those spies is missing. So, in order to avoid an international terror incident, other agencies and private organizations are consulted and SNAP (Strategic Neutralization and Protection Agency) is given the case of finding the gentleman and assessing the terror threat. Jack is the lead on the case with the SNAP team and Brynn's boss sends her to be part of the team until the case is solved. Jack and Brynn were in love at one time and classmates at the CIA's training facility but their time there came to an end whey Brynn moved onto the coveted position that she now holds but Jack quit and went to another agency, feeling that Brynn had betrayed him. That's my feeble attempt at putting this in a nutshell, but it's more interesting than that.
I loved this story so much that I went looking for this Author's other work and discovered that there is already a Prequel to this story available for my Kindle so I promptly got it and read it. And I also found out that Book #2 is in the works for later this year. I can't wait to read that one! I love it when I find a new-t0-me author that I can get excited about.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
An Egyptian spy is missing in the US. Brynn Taylor could lose her job over this. As a CNA analyst, she is responsible for him being in our country. Was she so wrong about him? Prior to his disappearance, he approached Brynn and asked if he could ask a favor of her. She quickly shut him down without asking what favor he wanted. Did that have to do with his disappearance?
Jack is also working the case. It just so happens that Jack and Brynn have a history. Nine years old, but still history.
The ending was one I had not predicted. Don't you just love a story like that?
Great characters! Keoka, the Hawaiian hacker was just too likeable!
I was given an advanced ecopy by the publisher, Revell and Netgalley. Thank you! I was under no obligation to leave a positive review.
This is Natalie's best novel yet! And her other ones are great, but this one took the suspense to an international level! Cia has her career on the line, the man she let get away and now resents her, worse there's a misunderstanding, and he thinks she's a traitor. So much tension with catastrophic danger at hand. How can they work together! Action paced, you will stay hooked with every twist until the very end.
I have read this author's work before and was impressed. In this book she has really upped her game.
Her writing style has improved, I am very impressed. I spent too much time reading this past my bedtime but I just couldn't put it down.
The plot was intense and I'd compare it to the well known, top authors my husband reads with his thriller books.
An intriguing plot, it had all the right elements to keep my attention, lots of action, many law enforcement agencies, terrorism,an international plot, danger around every corner, explosives, murder, etc.etc. This is a high action book that you won't be able to put down!
Highly recommended. I can't wait to read the next in the series.

All opinions expressed are my own.
This book was an interesting read; however, I didn’t feel as much suspense as I would have expected from a book that included a possible terrorist attack. It contained a lot of different agencies and a complex story, but it just didn’t grab me as much as it should have. The characters were enjoyable with the eclectic bunch from SNAP. This is still a good book despite finding myself more watching from above instead of being invested more in the story. I would still give it a 3 out of 5 stars.
Wow, I tell you what, Wow! I was on edge trying to solve this mystery. It was a fantastic mix of suspense and relationships. I love the covert spy world and this one does not disappoint. Jack and Brynn were both smart, intuitive, and independent. The other members of their team were fantastic and so nuanced.
Jack and Brynn had a history and a chemistry that added so much to the world created here. The growth in both characters is phenomenal and organic. The mystery is compelling and suspenseful. I found myself trying to figure out the mystery and being pulled in through the end. I love it when the book gets into my head like this. The pacing was perfect and I was happy with the outcome. I can't wait for more from this author.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher and through NetGalley and this is my honest review.
Title: Lights Out
Author: Natalie Walters
Ch: 37
Pg: 316
Series: The Snap Agency
Genre: Christian Suspense with a hint of romance
Rating: 4.5 stars
Publisher: Revell
For me Lights out the first book in The Snap Agency by Natalie Walters started a little slow. But after a few chapters I was hooked. I liked Jack Hudson from the start, but it took me a bit to warm up to Brynn Taylor. But once I did i realized she was an easy heroine to relate too.
Brynn is like most of us who were teenagers when 9/11 happened had their lives change and altered our future. Like Brynn my dad was affected by 9/11 but unlike Brynn’s dad who lost the career he loved my dad ended up on back-to-back deployments that burnt him out on the career he loved. So, this book hit me personally.
Lights out had the right balance between the suspense and romance, and I loved all the pop culture references. But can references to a movie that is 34 years be considered pop culture don’t get me wrong it’s my favorite movie ever and kind which I could see it the same way the characters in the book got to see it.
I loved the secondary characters and can’t wait for the next one in the series.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher a part of a blog tour. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

Wow wow wow! Another explosive story from one of my favorite authors! I loved Natalie Walters' first series, Harbored Secrets, and now I'm hooked yet again. She has such a way of crafting stories with characters that you will just fall in love with. I think the characters in this new book are even better than in her first series. This story is so full of details, action and suspense and will keeep you on the edge of your seat. It is so very well written. Definitely one of my favorite reads this year!
Now I'm anxiously awaiting Kekoa's story. :)
If you like books with action, spies and some romance you are going to love this story. This concentrates on a different agency that helps out the CIA and others to hopefully prevent terrorist attacks. There are twists and turns . Brynn and Jack learn to work together again after years apart. This has everything you want in a romantic suspense novel. I received a copy of this book from Revell for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
CIA operative Brynn Taylor has almost completed her latest mission— running an international inter-agency program teaching agents from seven countries how to locate and identify domestic terrorists—when one of her students disappears.
Was she really supposed to rely on a bomb expert, a giant techie, a young woman dressed like she'd spent all night at a club, and an ex-boyfriend.
Jack Hudson left the CIA and joined SNAP, the Strategic Neutralization and Protection Agency, a private security firm employing a band of talented misfits that reminded me of CSI characters. Jack is also Brynn’s ex-boyfriend from eight years earlier.
So Lights Out is a second-chance romance. One of the problems with this kind of plot is that it can be hard to come up with a convincing reason the couple broke up in the first place that still allows room for them to get back together. Often it comes down to a simple misunderstanding that could have been resolved with a single adult conversation, and I thought that was the case with Lights Out.
We realise early in the story that something happened when Brynn and Jack were going through CIA training, but we’re not sure what. When I finally found out, I didn’t think it was convincing. In fact, it gave me the impression Jack didn’t understand one of the key training objectives … which leaves me wondering about his professional competence.
But that was the only thing that annoyed me. The main plot was a strong suspense story set in and around Washington DC, with all the chases and bangs readers want … interspersed with the comic relief of the banter between the members of SNAP, and the will-they-won’t-they Brynn/Jack relationship.
Lights Out by Natalie Walters is a strong suspense story with all the chases and bangs readers want interspersed plenty of banter and a second-chance romance. Recommended for fans of DiAnn Mills and Irene Hannon.
Thanks to Revell and NetGalley for providing a free ebook for review.
This is an excellent start to a very promising series. Heroine Brynn has clearly defined motivations for safety and security, and her bravery in the face of trouble is admirable. Hero Jack is a strong and steady character, a great companion for Brynn. Their jobs are interesting and the different points of view the author includes all add beautifully to the mystery.
The S.N.A.P. Agency is an interesting premise and the supporting cast are very well written, which leads me to eagerly look forward to the next installment.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell Publishers and NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
What an exciting book!! I really enjoyed the puzzles and mystery as Brynn and the SNAP team raced to beat the bad guys.
The SNAP team was awesome. I’m not sure who I lie more, Kekoa or Lyla, but I think right now Kekoa wins. The humor and banter and camaraderie of the team made me smile. I also thoroughly enjoyed how much page time The Princess Bride got :)
I am seeing a theme in books lately of redemption and reconciliation in relationships. I find it interesting that so many authors are weaving that into their stories.
Lots of action in this start to a new series and I look forward to reading more about the SNAP team in future books. Many thanks to NetGalley & Revell for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own and a favorable review was not required.
