I read this before the late Queen passed away in 2022, I have read a lot about this very interesting lady. It is well researched but sadly learnt nothing new- I suppose we have all watched the Netflix series The Crown, and a lot of the content is poetic licence but we crave more. It felt one sided and and there was no mention of the scandals and megativitiy but a good portrayal of a woman, mother, head of State and her family.
Interesting read
I appreciate the publisher allowing me to read this book. I found the subject matter really interesting. The book was well written and easy to understand. I highly recommend this book.
I have read this biography of the queen before when I was younger. This is a well-written and comprehensive biography. However, with the rise of many biographies about the queen, there is no new information. Still, I recommend this for fans of The Crown!
Being a history nut, I always wanted to read more about the longest reigning monarch of the British Empire, her Majesty The Queen. Queen Elizabeth II has been a remarkable figure and an inspiring icon for many and reading this book that contains so much about her early life, was a treat.
Helen Cathcart is known for her dazzling biographies on the royals, and 'The Queen Herself' is a sparkling diamond among them all. This book vividly paints the picture of The Queen as a child and continues as she grows up. It documents the time of The Blitz and how the young queen slept in the dungeons of the Windsor Castle, and how the second world war had an enormous impact on her.
Another turning point in the queen's life was when she got married to Prince Phillip in 1947, and soon after they started a family. But maybe what she wasn't ready for was the sudden death of her father, King George VI, in 1952. Elizabeth II had to take up the weight of the crown when she was 25, her coronation was on 2nd June, 1953. And ever since then she has been an extraordinary monarch and an exceptional constitutional head.
I loved reading this book because of it's seamless narration and the treasure trove of information it contains. The focus was on the first thirty years of Her Majesty's life and this book didn't miss a beat. The Queen Herself is the perfect read for a person interested in history or biographies.
I found this book super interesting, especially as an individual living in a Commonwealth country who has learnt from young the history of the Queen and the Royals.
The life of Her Majesty is one that, while told many times over, never gets boring and only gets more spectacular as she gets on. Cathcart writes beautifully about her being a devoted servant to her country and her struggles upon being crowned at such a young age. If you are hooked on The Crown, then I would pick up this book immediately!
I give this book 3.5 stars.
The Queen Herself follows the time in Queen Elizabeths life from birth but no definitive end point, which make sense since she is still living. I am a big fan of The Crown and of other biographies, however this one seemed so very slanted. It shied away from any negative aspects of the crown, the queen and the family. It heavily glossed over any mental health issues, family squabbles, skeletons in closet, rumors, etc. It was a very favorable portrayal of the woman and her family
This is the first book I’ve actually read about the queen. Fascinating insight, factual yet entertaining this book will be enjoyed by all and especially those with a real interest in the Queens first 30 years. Definitely recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I've always loved Queen Elizabeth and couldn't resist diving into this book which provides a thoughtful and intriguing look into the life of such an interesting woman.
This book covers the first 30 years of Queen Elizabeth II reign. From her early days through the early 1980s, the stories told are known and not so known to the wider public. A very nice biography of the Queen.
Reading about the Queen her life, details I knew nothing about very interesting. In some ways she is a lady of mystery and I am interested in her ,her life strength and place in history.A book I really enjoyed,#netgalley#sapere,
Very interesting biography of a woman we all are curious about. This is going to fly off the shelves (thanks, the crown!). Definitely recommend for all library collections
Quite interesting, and I’m going to guess after Prince Phillip’s death people will be interested in reading more about the queen. There are interesting things to learn about her highness and this book paints a picture. Of course these are not set in stone facts, only the Queen herself knows the true stories. That being said this was interesting to read
Love the Queen and the Royal Family so was very happy to receive this ARC of the Queen. Read it in one sitting was a lovely story of her life
Originally published in 1982, this wonderful portrait of Britain's beloved monarch is another winner from Harold Albert (writing under the name of Helen Cathcart) a prolific and talented biographer who published several popular and higly acclaimed books about the Queen and the Royals. It's really wonderful that Sapere Books is making his works available once again. This one celebrated Elizabeth's early life and her 30 years on the throne. It's an elegant portrait of a woman, a wife, a mother and a head of state written with lots of respectful admiration and packed with marvellous details about the Windsors. A very entertaining biography that should be discovered or rediscovered by anyone interested by the Royals and their contributions to 20th century British history.
A delicious book to be enjoyed without any moderation whatsoever!
Many thanks to Netgalley and Sapere Books for this terrific ARC
An enjoyable read that I raced through in one sitting,I do love The Queen and Royal Family so there was an obvious advantage to my enjoyment of this book but it was so well written once started I wanted to read more and more
Fascinating insight, factual yet entertaining this book will be enjoyed by all and especially those with a real interest in the Queens first 30 years
THE QUEEN HERSELF by HELEN CATHCART is a biography of one of the most famous and outstanding women of our time. I loved it and found it a most interesting and worthwhile read. I am a great admirer of Queen Elizabeth 11 and cannot recommend this book highly enough. She is such an example to us of a life well lived, with fortitude and single mindedness, giving her all for Britain and the Commonwealth.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Sapere Books. The opinions in this review are completely my own.
