This right here is a perfect summer novel. I absolutely loved it, and I don't think there's anything negative I would need to point out. The author created a set of funny, charming and loveable characters. Especially the protagonists, Declan and Sarah, are so sweet; there's no chance you could not root for them. And it's because they are written as being genuine and human, which makes them relatable.
This book really had me cracking up from the first pages, and I couldn't put it down until I turned the last one. It's nicely written, from the storyline to the little details and thoughts put into everything. Of course, you might be able to tell at some point where the plot is heading, but it didn't diminish the reading experience. I loved how some elements reappeared later on in the story, closing an arc. It made it an altogether enjoyable read.
I really loved this book! What I loved most about this was that it had more to keep you intrigued. While most books stop at the meet up after the one night stand, it only paved a way to the whole story unfolding. Wonderful writing and thoroughly enjoyed
"One Night Only", by Catherine Walsh, has a cute premise: girl meets boy, hooks up with boy, only to (days later!) discover that he's the best man in her friend's wedding. This book centers around Sarah and Declan, who must now figure out how to navigate the awkwardness that comes with the situation they've found themselves in. I enjoyed the chemistry between them, but the arguing (that usually sends sparks flying) just falls flat in this book. I also felt that there were so many misunderstandings between them and it got repetitive. Overall, this was a good book.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
One Night Only was a light and easy read, perfect for the beach/holiday reading. It was entertaining and funny, with some well observed Irish-isms in there for good measure. I liked the main characters, I liked the idea of the story, i liked it all. While I didn’t love it (personal opinion), I can easily see it’s well-written, cleverly plotted, and has plenty to keep you turning the pages. Recommended for sure!
Sarah Anderson has a strict policy of one night only when it comes to men, so you can imagine her horror when handsome, charming Declan, recently kicked out of her bed, appears at her best friend’s wedding. And he’s the best man. Sarah is deeply mortified, and a tiny bit intrigued by Declan… and so begins the utterly charming and enjoyable One Night Only.
Something startlingly refreshing about this novel from the first page was it’s willingness to play around with genre conventions, never quite landing on one. It was one of the first
romances I’ve read that has kept me guessing right to the end. Sarah and Declan’s relationship flirts (heh) with slow burn, enemies-to-lovers, and friends-to-lovers, though it never quite fits into any of these boxes. This kept me hooked and excited to see what would happen next. Walsh’s protagonist is also made of fresher stuff than the average - she’s the one with the deep fear of commitment, not the man. Without giving away anything, this allows Walsh to dig into some tougher subjects, adding grit and nuance to the story without overwhelming the reader or taking away from the main romantic plot.
The novel also boasts a lovely cast of characters, rounded in their own right as opposed to window-dressing for the main couple. I particularly enjoyed Declan’s nosy Irish mam, hell-bent on matchmaking in a way that made me cringe with recognition, and Sarah’s work rival slash frenemy Matthias - can we have a book about him next, please?
The book’s dual settings of Ireland and New York worked well for me, neither falling prey to the stereotyping that happens so often to them. I would have loved to have seen more of Walsh’s Ireland, with it’s rainy skies and grandiose houses: a far cry from the pot-of-gold-touting depictions so popular in romances past. It felt real and not at all picture-perfect, and the very Irish nonsense that took place (the FANS and the FISH in the HEAT) made me laugh out loud several times.
I loved this book. It’s warm, funny, smart and with just a hint of wry humour that prevents things from becoming too saccharine. An absolutely cracking debut, I cannot wait to see what Catherine does next. Thanks to @bookouture for the ARC!
Amazing!! This book was everything I wanted and more. Catherine Walsh does an incredible job at writing this novel, and I cant wait to read what she writes next. The pacing in this story was just incredible, and both the hero and heroine were perfect. Really really amazing.
A lovely romantic, comedy. There was a lot of push/pull between the two main characters, mostly from the heroine, that created great tension and chemistry. This sort of follows the friends to lovers troupe with a lot of resistance although their lovers than kind of friends ... you get the drift. The writing was engaging and easy to read allowing readers to connect. This was fast and fun. A great read for a hot summer's day.
One Night Only is a great, quick read for people after a feel-good romance. As someone living in Ireland I loved Catherine Walsh's descriptions and characterisations of Ireland and the people, they were super accurate and I often found myself laughing out loud at situations that we're so quintessentially Irish I could almost see them happening in real life (hello, nosy Irish mams!) The romance between Declan and Sarah was sweet and believable and she did a great job of adding depths to the characters and backgrounds to make the slow burn, almost enemies to lovers trajectory of their relationship come to life. The only downside for me was I found Sarah's character annoying towards the end with her reluctance to communicate with Declan about her feelings and hesitations. I thought that could've been resolved a bit earlier to give them more time to settle into their relationship. Also, if you're looking for something more on the steamier side this definitely isn't it. Overall I did enjoy it and would recommend it!
One Night Only by Catherine Walsh was a fabulous rom-com! The writing was so playful, also enjoyable to read. All these characters were so relatable.
If you're looking for something to kick a reading slump or if you just want a fun, romantic book to sweep you off your feet this summer: look no further. This was such a good book. To be read by the beach or in the garden. Let this story take you away for a few hours of reading bliss. I’m so impressed this was the authors debut book, I’ll certainly be looking out for more by Catherine. Well done!
This is the tale of Sarah and Declan who experienced a one night stand together, unknowing that fate is going to play a blinder, and they will meet again, at Sarah's best mate's wedding, of all places. I wont give too much away, but I think we all know where this is going to lead...
This is such a cosy, light hearted, funny rom-com that I found irresistible and struggled to put it down. I "accidently" read this into the early hours of the morning as I was so engrossed, taking me only one day to finish. The connection between the characters was portrayed effortlessly, and although the physical parts of that sexual chemistry is played out well, it is not too graphic to cause offense. A great page turner, and highly recommended for a laugh out loud read.
Catherine Walsh is an author to watch out for, and I will definitely be on the look out for her forthcoming releases. As a debut this has set the standards high. Absolutely loved it!
This wound up being very different than I expected, based on the description, but that's not a complaint. I was expecting the wedding to feature much more prominently in the story, but it's actually a fairly small part. Oddly enough, I'm almost tempted to call this a slow burn romance even though they technically sleep together pre-page 1. I was surprised that this was mostly closed-door--it seemed a bit coy after the frankness with which many other topics were covered.
This was a very engaging read and hard to put down. There were a lot of characters to keep straight, but most of them were enjoyable and shaded in well. Sarah frustrated me a bit--she seemed immature for her age and made some poor choices, but she did grow over the course of the novel, which made it easier to root for her. Declan was interesting--hard to pin down, but in some ways that made him more interesting. I liked that he wasn't perfect--he had his own baggage, insecurities, and moments when he wasn't at his best.
I would definitely recommend picking this up for a fun, funny, thoughtful read!
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!

One night only is such a cute and lighthearted read which I loved! The characters are well rounded and flawed which made it easy to be invested in their stories. I devoured this in one sitting and highly recommend if you’re looking for a cute, quick rom-com for the summer!
This book was such a rollercoaster and I absolutely loved every minute of it. Do I now need me a beautiful irishman to kiss my temple and stay up until sunrise with? Yes, yes I do.
I’m consistently drawn to books with chemistry and banter and interactions that bounce so easily, and this book had exactly that. I’m just glad I wasn’t reading this in public because I was, without a doubt, grinning the whole time.
Oh, did I mention that wonderful trope of running-into-a-one-night-stand-at-your-best-friends-wedding-where-he’s-the-best-man-and-pretending-like-you’re-not-completely-in-love-with-each-other-all-the-while-teasing-and-irritating-one-another? Well, if that wasn’t on your radar before, it definitely is now.
I really enjoyed reading about these characters and the engaging writing has me hoping for another book; maybe focussing on Soraya? (Please?!)
Overall, an absolute pleasure to read (I did get through it in one day), and definitely one to recommend to my rom-com loving friends.
Once again, thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC.
I loved this book so much! What a pleasant surprise to learn this is a debut book for the author because it was so well written and enjoyable, I assumed she was a seasoned author with many books. Her writing style reminds me a bit of Josie Silver (whom I love!).
I’d read the synopsis prior to starting the book so I figured I would enjoy it and find it predictable, and some parts were but they were so much deeper and went through much more of a journey than I predicted and expected! I’m definitely adding it to my must-read-again-one-day list and will be adding Catherine to my authors-to-watch list too!
Absolutely recommend this book to anyone who loves chick-lit / romance looking for a fun and enjoyable read. It’s the perfect summer reading! Thank you to #Netgalley and the author for the opportunity to read and provide an honest review. 💕
4.5 ⭐
Sarah lives in New York and works as architect. Her divorced parents and ex-boyfriend made her stop believing in love, so she sworn off relationships. She tells herself that one night stands are better and won't lead to a heartbreak. After a night spent with Declan, a gorgeous Irishman who thinks it's more than casual hookup, she throws him out the door. And that's fine, because she won't see him ever again, right? Right?!
Well, here's a problem. Sarah flies to Ireland to her best friend's wedding as maid of honor and then she realised, the best man and brother of the groom is none other than Declan. And to top it all off, she has to sit with him at the same table and deal with his mother.
Now, that they share the same group of friends, it's hard to avoid him. But does she really want it? Is it really one night only? Or maybe there's a chance to get into relationship and start believing in happily ever after?
I wouldn't call their relationship enemies to lovers but these two stubborn people love teasing each other and bickering like an old, married couple.
The friendship development was the strongest point of this book. I love their dynamic and how supportive everyone was, especially Will (Sarah's coworker), who may appear as annoying a*shole but always stands up for Sarah.
I'm a big fan of angst in romance but I think the last chapsters were a little bit too dramatic for my liking. I understand Sarah actions but the ending was dragged out.
Nonetheless, it was quick, fun and light story, perfect for hot summer days. I forgot how much I love Irish sense of humor. I'm looking forward to read Catherine's another book.
Thank you NetGalley for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Oh, I loved this rom-com. It was well written and all the characters were so defined. All the minute details were great addition. It has the perfect amount of angst that needs in a light-hearted rom-com. It is funny and humorous. So ideal for a relaxing time.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the digital copy
One Night Only is Sarah’s motto ever since her last relationship tanked, so imagine her surprise when the one night stand she had just before leaving for her bestie’s wedding in Ireland turns out to be the brother of the groom. Sarah really wants to abide by her rule, but Declan looks so good in his tux…and even better out of it. Once they both are back in NY can Sarah prevent another encounter? This reader loved that all the characters were defined, the situations often humorous, and insecurities handled with feeling and emotion without pages of angst! It’s a wonderful read. I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book from NetGalley. Most highly recommend.

AMAZING. I loved this book, is so funny, light and nice… and addictive, is so addictive, since I started it I couldn’t put it down in any moment, I had to continue reading it and know what was happening with our characters. I loved to read the interactions between Sarah and Declan, they are so funny, I didn’t stop laughing with the thing that they were saying, really they were for each other and I couldn’t wait the moment when they declaring their infinity love. Okay, I will not deny that in some parts I wanted to strangle them, especially Sarah in some moments when she felt less than others or when she didn’t know what she wanted, I swear that she was bipolar but then she comes to her senses and I loved her again, and well, I fell in love with Declan at the first second. The other characters also made the perfect appearances, I had so much fun with Anna, Will and Claire.
The book has such an everyday atmosphere but full of small details that make you get into history, into the life of these characters and that you imagine a day in New York or a travel to Irish, I mean, now I want an Irish wedding. Also, the little plot twists of the story were amazing and especially that at the final, WHATTTT, I was dying because I just wanted that they had a beautiful and a happy ending.
This book was simply perfect for me, ideal for relaxing a weekend, is light, fast, funny, I mean, what more can you ask? Definitively is amazing and please tell me when the author is going to publish another book because obviously, I will be going to read it.
This is witty, entertaining, one night standers to lovers ( a brand new premise I invented) premise with balanced angst, heartbreak and sizzling chemistry between MCs putting chapters on fire!
Sarah Anderson, 31, astonishing architect, made an oath not to have a serious relationship after Josh incident. Her parents’ marriage was not great role model for her to believe in happily ever after sad well.
She is sharpening her one night stand skills as her bestie Annie’s wedding date approaching.
After flying to Ireland to attend the wedding of Annie as maid of honor, only thing she wanted was not thinking of her stressful job, the customer account taken away from her even though she worked too hard for and the charming man she had one night stand who forgot his watch at her apartment and who insisted to have a breakfast with her. No, she cannot think about that magical night or things they did together.
But holly hell! Did her dirty fantasies summon him? The same man is Declan Murphy who is the brother of the groom and the best man who is sharing the same table with her and it seems like his mother Mary tries so hard to matchmake them.
Nope, she cannot think any serious relationship at this stage of her life. But attraction is hard to resist. She does everything not to fall for him. And when she realizes she is not the only one carrying a huge baggage from past relationship.
Could they pass through the obstacles by learning to deal with trust issues? Could they have a chance to open their hearts to true love?
I enjoyed this book a lot. At the beginning I found Sarah a little stubborn and her self sabotaging way to find her happiness pissed me but as I learn more about her past I kinda understand her reasoning. Declan also deals much heavier emotional and messy stuff but I liked their undeniably attractions, their hot and smart banters.
Supporting characters were so much fun including auntie Eileen who is great cutlery designer and Uncle Trevor who is big worrier about the future of the planet.
Annie and Mary were also my favorite ones. And all those batshit crazy, lovable Irish people made me smile so big!
I’m looking forward to read more works of Catherine Walsh.
This is a great feel good, have fun, popcorn romcom reading I highly recommend!
