Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this galley in exchange for an honest review!
Sarah does one night stands. She does not do two night stands, or anything you would ever dare refer to as a relationship. So when her latest beau shows up when she’s about to be the maid of honor at her friend’s wedding? Well, crap. The Irish Declan is just scrumptious. Will she be able to resist?
I mean it’s a romcom. And frankly, I don’t blame her.
It’s a little bit enemies to lovers because Sarah wants nothing to do with him. But also not really? I don’t know, but I did find it a very enjoyable read. Sarah is maybe slightly frustrating and Declan isn’t perfect but they’re both well written and the chemistry between them is electric.
4/5 stars
Wow, this book really DID make me laugh out loud in parts. Which never happens for me so I'm glad that Catherine Walsh delivered on that. There were so many relatable parts of this book navigating love, breakups and dating. Thoroughly enjoyed!
I flew through this book. I thought it was a fun read and good story. At times I got annoyed with the main character and her repeat actions.. got a little repetitive. By the end, all was good!
A great, fun beach read. Sarah Anderson has one rule about dating, and that rule is one-night stands only! So, when she travels to Ireland for her best friend’s wedding, she was shocked to find her most recent one-night stand at the wedding, and the brother of the groom. Can she keep to her rule, or will Declan Murphy charm her into more than just one night?
This fast-paced book was charming and fun. and full of laughs with a lot of quirky characters. Highly recommend
Who could have predicted this? Being at the same wedding. In Ireland.
There’s a reason one-night stands are one-night stands. You’re not supposed to see each other again, especially not when you’re the maid of honor, and he’s the groom’s brother…
Sarah Anderson has never been more excited about anything in her life. She’s going to her best friend’s wedding. And not just any wedding. An Irish wedding. Goodbye New York, hello rolling green hills and men with beautiful accents and twinkling eyes.
But Sarah should have known that not all guests are fairy-tale princes…
There’s the chinless Uncle Trevor, whose idea of small talk is to claim climate change is a conspiracy. Then there’s Great Aunt Eileen, who doesn’t talk at all (she’s too busy replacing the hotel cutlery with her own set).
Worst of all, there’s Declan Murphy. Best man. Brother of the groom. And the man Sarah last saw naked.
Is there anything more mortifying than bumping into a one-night stand halfway across the world? Especially as Declan seems determined to embarrass Sarah at every turn. At least when the wedding’s over she’ll never have to see him again.
But, back in New York, Sarah finds the more she tries to forget Declan, the more she can’t shake the thought of that infuriatingly charming smile and the way he wears a tux…
Was he really just for one night only, or might Declan Murphy be The One?
I received an ARC from NetGalley in return for an honest review.
I love a good romance, even though they are hard to find. Catherine Walsh was able to give me a romance that drew me in and did not let go. From the first chapter, I was hooked. I love how the Main Female Character (MFC) was a grumpy, pessimistic character who chose one night stands over being vulnerable and the Main Male Character (MMC) appeared to be smug, cocky, and cold only to be a complete softie. I love that while the story was a romance, it built on the different relationships the MFC had.
Catherine Walsh’s writing is fun, flirty, and sexy. Her character are complex and imperfect. I look forward to reading more by this author.
I’m always nervous when I try a new author, especially as I can be a little fussy and it can sometimes take me a couple of books to get on board with their style of writing. However, Catherine’s easy style and ability to write a twisty, page turning, fun narrative had me hooked from the beginning.
A real bugbear of mine when it comes to this genre is when books call themselves ‘hilarious’, ‘laugh out loud’ or ‘romantic comedy’ and you’re reading the book thinking: light in mood and tone? Yes. Funny? Absolutely not. However, this book definitely delivers on the humour aspect which I loved. You’ve got the dry humour of the interactions between Declan and Sarah, and then some of the more slapstick humour around certain unfortunate mishaps and run-ins that happen.
I’ve actually been a little floored by how much I loved this book as I definitely didn’t expect to love it as much as I did. The premise is interesting, and I loved how Sarah and Declan kept bumping into each other. This could have felt forced, but since the author set up the context around their lives – it doesn’t. The tension is there throughout – romantic, sexual but also personal and family tensions within these complex, relatable characters and their interesting lives.
To summarise, this is a brilliantly written romantic comedy, which has cemented Catherine Walsh’s place as a “must read” author for me. I would recommend this book to fans of Sophie Ranald, Camilla Isley and Bella Osborne, who just so happen to be three of my favourite authors in this genre.
You won’t regret choosing this as your next uplifting, fun and entertaining summer read!
One Night Only by Catherine Walsh is a delightfully funny and charming romantic comedy set in New York city and Ireland. Sarah is shocked to find out that her latest one-night stand is none other than Declan, her best friend’s new brother-in-law and best man at their wedding. This story follows a commitment-phobe Sarah, overcome her trust issues so as to find love with the man she hasn’t been able to stop thinking about.
This fast paced story is full of messy characters, hilarious banter and gasp-worthy twists. Declan and Sarah are far from perfect. Probably the most satisfying aspect of the book is that the author makes Sarah work for her happily ever after. There are some unexpected discoveries that made this story unputdownable. The secondary characters also provide some great rom-com moments and FUNNY dialogues .
One Night Only is a story narrated with love and perfection. It is hard to believe that this is Catherine’s debut novel. I recommend this feel good story for readers who like a sweet, somewhat realistic romantic comedy that is sure to have them laughing out loud.

One Night Only is an entertaining and engaging romantic comedy. Declan and Sarah go round and round on their journey to their HFN. Sometimes they see eye to eye, wanting the same thing from each other. Other times they were exchanging barbs and facing off. Sarah is a woman who thinks she knows what she wants, but she's got some things to work through in order to figure out what she really wants. Declan has some things to deal with as well, but the journey in this story is mostly Sarah's. I don't care to admit that I wanted to give her a good shake a few times, but it was all a part of her growth - Catherine Walsh certainly knows her stuff when it comes to letting the reader experience her characters' personal growth. The story was a little longer than I felt necessary and dragged some in the middle, but all in all, it's an amusing romance that's great for a weekend of relaxing with a good book.
This was a debut novel from this author.
Sarah and Declan are our main characters and I found them enjoyable and funny to read about. The chemistry between them was seen from the moment they met each other.
It was a very comedic, uplifting and feel good story that I didn't want it to end. It had me hooked from the start and had me laughing along with the characters.
Can't wait to read more from this author.
Sarah Anderson copes with her high-stress architecture job by having one-night stands. After some letdowns at work, she’s looking forward to her best friend’s wedding in Ireland. It’s beautiful there, but the best man turns out to be the last one-night stand she had back in New York. She has to deal with that awkwardness, then missing him when she returns to New York.
As a rom-com, I could tell from the beginning that the one-night stand we open with is going to be more. The unnamed strange that turns out to be Declan is too cute, too reasonable, and seems determined to stay rather than beat a hasty retreat. Of course, they bristle and snark at each other if not avoiding staying in the same place. Both being part of the wedding makes that impossible, so that Sarah has to continually encounter Declan. Even after the wedding, they keep meeting up randomly in New York City, a feat accomplished by the fact that Declan works and is part-owner at the bar and restaurant that Sarah regularly goes to. She’s flustered and he’s enamored, and they tend to annoy each other deliberately as a result.
Of course, there are difficulties along the way, external and internal. Each have their own history and emotional complications because of those histories, and the letdowns at work that Sarah had continued. I enjoyed the way Sarah and her friends interacted in very real ways, and that they had relationships outside of her love life and showed different sides of her. Given that it’s from her POV, we don’t see the same from Declan’s perspective. His coworkers are all protective of him the way her friends are, fleshing out bits of his personality for the reader to see.
One Night Only is a fluffy contemporary rom-com with some heavy emotional matter at times. But everyone involved gets to see what is most important to them and go after what makes them happy, leading to our happy ending.
I'm going to keep this review short, sweet and a bit spicy, because that is exactly what this book was.
One Night Only starts off with Sarah waking up and pushing her one night stand outside her house. One night stands are just meant to be for only one night, right? Wrong! In this novel, Sarah's best friend is getting married over in Ireland and who could be the groom's best man? Yes, Sarah's one night stand Declan, the last man she saw naked.
In saucy rom com, I was either blushing or cringing but most of all I was laughing. I love the dirty but possibly corny pick up lines Declan used on Sarah several times throughout this book. This book is definitely not for the faint hearted, as there is a lot of crude humour.
One Night Only is out now.
Thank you to Netgalley, Bookouture for the gifting of this eARC and thank you to Catherine.
Sarah and Declan were great fun, from one night stand to a very awkward encounter at her best friend's wedding, there were quite a few laugh out loud moments.
This was a fantastic debut, with a lot of heart and just enough heat for a solid romcom. Sarah and Declan's chemistry was delightful. Set in both New York, and Ireland friendship, family, and love are all explored and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it!
An absolutely delectable romantic comedy, Catherine Walsh’s One Night Only is a hilarious tale that will make readers roar with laughter.
When Sarah Anderson hears that her best friend is getting married in Ireland, she is beside herself with joy. Sarah cannot wait to leave the hustle and bustle of New York and spend some time surrounded by miles upon miles of rolling green hills and breath-taking rural vistas. As she hops on a plane and heads off to the Emerald Isle, Sarah’s expectations are absolutely sky-high, however, when she gets to the wedding, she is taken aback by some of the guests’ eccentricities. From Uncle Trevor’s conspiracy theories to Great Aunt Eileen who doesn’t talk but who has a penchant for stealing cutlery, this wedding is certainly full of larger than life characters, but little does Sarah realise that her best friend’s nuptials are going to bring her face to face with a man she never thought she would see ever again: the groom’s brother, best man Declan Murphy.
Sarah and Declan had a one-night stand and they thought they would never clap eyes on one another again, but it seems as is if fate had other ideas for the pair of them. Sarah plans to give Declan as wide a berth as possible, even though she seems to bump into him at every turn! Declan never loses an opportunity to embarrass Sarah, however she comforts herself with the knowledge that she will never see him again after the wedding…or will she?
Back in New York, Sarah simply cannot stop herself from thinking about Declan. What is she going to do now? Should she just try and forget about him? Or should she find the courage to face up to the fact that he might be the one?
A riotous page-turner that I read in a matter of hours, Catherine Walsh’s One Night Only is romantic comedy gold. Catherine Walsh has got such a wonderful knack of writing witty and sparkling dialogue and blending it with laugh-loud humour, tender emotion and touching romance.
Sarah and Declan are such great characters. Funny, relatable, flawed and believable, readers are going to fall in love with them from the start.
Warm-hearted, uplifting and simply terrific, romantic comedy fans will not want to miss Catherine Walsh’s One Night Only.
I really enjoyed this book. It's quite fast paced and action packed – it feels a little like there's always something happening to each of the characters.
I would have loved a little more focus on the Irish wedding. Irish people are known for throwing lively and entertaining weddings that span entire weekends, and I feel we didn't see enough of that.
It was really refreshing to see a male love interest be so into the female love interest. I loved seeing a guy who was invested in making things work.
I felt a plot point with one of Sarah's co-workers was only included for unnecessary conflict and could easily have been left out.
Overall, a really enjoyable story.
[Thanks Netgalley for the ebook. This review is my honest opinion but just another opinion, you should read this book and judge it by yourself]
I had a great time with this story! I must confess I wasn't expecting anything fron this story and I started the reading with a great dislike for the female MC but the easy writing, the fun story and characters and the lovely male MC undid my first impression. That sort of things and Sarah's evolution turned what I thought was going to be an annoying reading into a delightful one.
The story isn't new but the narration is fresh and funny. I had a great time reading it and I was sad to finish it. A lovely and funny debut! I will surely read Catherine Walsh's next book.

Imagine having a one night stand, kicking him out and flying cross country, only to find out he is also in the same wedding party as you. This is exactly what happened to our heroine Sarah, except Declan was different. The book started out in NYC, but Sarah was racing for time to get to Ireland for her best friends wedding, this is when we see Declan again, he happens to be the grooms brother, how is that for awkward.
The writing was fantastic for. a debut novel!
Sarah wakes up with a hangover and quickly shoos her one night stand that she finds in her bed out the door. She works for Baxter and Sons Architects. When she arrives at work, she learns from her boss that her work will be given to Matthias, a nice guy but not one who has not worked as hard as she has for a promotion. Ah, but her best friend, Annie is getting to Paul and the wedding will be in his home country of Ireland. Sarah will be Annie’s maid of honor and just has to put this work thing behind her for now as she flies from New York to Ireland.
When she arrives in Ireland, Sarah is shocked to learn that her one night stand is Declan and none other than the brother of the groom. She is so embarrassed but he is loving it and finding it funny. As the days come closer to the ceremony, Sarah is feeling partially uncomfortable and embarrassed around Declan while also finding herself more and more attracted to him.
There are some humorous things in this book that made me chuckle but for the most part, it’s a bit of slap stick comedy somewhere between I Love Lucy and Friends. I honestly don’t see how these two people can build a true relationship between them because Sarah is an airhead who leaps before thinking and Declan never really shows quiet, respectable love for her. It’s only so long that a relationship can live on silly banter and subtle put-downs. Sadly, I don’t see the two lasting at all. If you are looking for some laughs and no solid relationship, this is a good read for you.
Copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Could not put this book down! A great read full of fun, laughs and romance. Great characters that kept pulling you in and wanting to know where it all ended. Can’t wait to read more by Catherine Walsh.
an one might stand meeting again? it can never go over too well.
i loved claire and declan so much, their banter and wit carried throughout the story and made them even more enjoyable to read about. we got to see some of declan’s family and their dynamic which was fun too. the only disappointing parts were the ‘fade to black scenes’ but overall an enjoyable read
