This book kept me interested from the very first page. A woman with A picture perfect life, a Handsome attentive husband, a beautiful daughter house to be envied, A thriving business. One day she is at home to find her husband being arrested one night for a crime he may or may not have committed. Just when you think you know where the story is headed the author takes you in another direction. There is not graphic violence. The characters were well written. You will not believe the ending
This books started hot out of the gate! I was hooked from the first chapter. What would you do if your husband is questioned by the policy as a suspected serial killer? Just know, that not all is as it seems in the life of Tom & Beth. The author did a great job of throwing you off track in this mysterious tale mixed with a bit of thrill!
When Beth met Tom Hardcastle, "sparks flew". Seven years later, married with a 2 year old daughter, Poppy, they have moved to a village outside of London and Tom commutes every day, starting early so he can be home in time to read Poppy bedtime stories,. Until one Monday evening, when he is running over two hours late and two police detectives knock on her door. But they are not there to tell Beth that something has happened to Tom; they want to question him about the disappearance of his previous girlfriend, Katie, 8 years ago. When Tom becomes a suspect in Katie's disappearance and possible murder, Beth tries to "keep it together" for Poppy's sake. But does Beth know more than she is telling? A delectably twisty thriller.
The Serial Killer's Wife by Alice Hunter is an amazing book and quite a thrill ride. There are so many twists and turns. The end is especially a good kind of crazy. You won't see it coming. Highly recommend. Thanks to Netgalley for the advance copy and to the publisher.
I ended up really enjoying this story. Beth and Tom Hardcastle live in a small town outside of London and seem to have the perfect marriage until the police show up to question Tom about the disappearance of his previous girlfriend. Beth begins questioning everything she thought she knew about her husband and their life. The story is told from alternating points of view and moves from the present to the past in flashbacks. The book started with the police arriving for questioning but then seemed to drag for a bit but once it got going it was a great ride. There were several twists and although I guessed what was going to happen at the end it was still a great story. I didn't particularly like any of the characters but that didn't detract from the story. Overall I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good mystery/thriller.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Excellent mystery with a novel scenario - what if your husband were accused of murder? What if everyone thought you knew? How would it affect your life, your children, your friendships? And what if you thought you knew a bit of something, or more than something, would you tell? Should you tell? And what if absolutely nothing is as it seems? Genuine fun, definitely recommended.
This story is told from Multiple points of view and two different timelines. We have Tom and Beth in the now, we have Katie and Tom eight years before and we have an unknown narrator...sounds confusing right? It wasn't. Alice Hunter managed all this and still the writing flowed perfectly.
The further I read the more I liked this book. There were a few surprises and the dialogue felt genuine, even three year old Poppy...that was really refreshing. The pacing of the book is what really hooked me, I read it in a day and loved the short chapters.
I would recommend this to anyone, because the story was such that I wanted to keep on reading and not put the book down. This was a really good debut and I think Alice Hunter is gonna be a name we will hear of a lot more.
I devoured this book in one day and I believe that speaks as to how easy this story was to read and how much I wanted to find out the facts of the case. This novel makes you question many of the characters and the knowledge that they have about the murder that happened 8 years ago.
Did he really do it? What does she know? His wife must have known he was a murderer.
Living in a small town can come with a lot of benefits but when your husband is arrested for a missing person case becomes a murder case gossip can get around quickly. You follow around Beth closely as she deals with her husband being arrest and she is learning to go through life with her daughter and the possibilities of her husband being in prison for the rest of his life. Throughout the story you beginning to find out aspects that the husband lied about and eventually lies other characters held.
This novel was extremely interesting and kept me enthralled with what was going to happen. I gave this almost a 4.5 star, but the ending seemed to be rather quick, and I wanted more to the ending then such a conniving and evil reasoning behind parts of the story. I fully recommend this story since I absolutely enjoyed it and the entire story inside.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harper 360 for the E-ARC of this mystery/thriller for an honest review.
Debut author Alice Hunter proves she is one to watch with the twisty psychological thriller The Serial Killer’s wife. She puts the reader right into the mind of the serial killers wife as her husband becomes a person of interest in a murder investigation. I enjoyed Beth’s story and found myself rooting for her and Poppy. If you like domestic suspense stories, you will enjoy this one!
I typically enjoy reading serial killer thrillers, but The Serial Killer's Wife completely blew me away! To say I enjoyed this thriller would be an understatement. All the characters were so well-written. Although I questioned some of Beth's decisions, she was a likeable/relatable character that the reader can empathize with. Other characters I enjoyed were Adam and Lucy. Beth's husband, Tom, was so twisted. The more that was revealed about his past and everything he tries to cover up, the more shocked I became.
Julia and the other moms at the nursery were difficult to read about because they seemed so immature and uncaring about what Beth was going through. Although Julia at first appeared to care about Beth, I kept thinking she had an ulterior motive for "being there" for Beth.
I also care a lot about the way a book ends. The ending can make or break a book for me. The Serial Killer's Wife had a fantastic ending! The author throws in one last plot twist to make you re-think everything you thought you knew about the characters. The epilogue made me think there could easily be a sequel. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a thriller revolving around a serial killer and how his decisions affected his wife and child, but keep in mind some of the descriptions are gory and disturbing, not for the faint of heart.

The Serial Killer's Wife by Alice Hunter.
Premise- Beth and Tom Hardcastle are the envy of their neighborhood – they have the perfect marriage, the perfect house, the perfect family. When the police knock on their door one evening, Beth panics. Tom should be back from work by now – what if he’s crashed his car? She fears the worst. But the worst is beyond imagining. As the interrogation begins, Beth will find herself questioning everything she believed about her husband.
The title of this book immediately perked my interest. What a great idea for a book from the perspective of a Serial Killer's spouse- did she have a clue? In many novels, the mystery is who did it, but going into this story we know Tom is the killer. But we don't know the why, the how, or if Beth knows. It was well written and the pacing was good, but it had more of a slow burn mystery feel to it. It was not a suspenseful kind of a thriller, but more one where details were revealed slowly to give you an idea of how we got to this point. The story was told from Beth and Tom's alternating points of view. The chapters were short which I kind of liked. I also kept trying to figure out if any of the secondary characters were involved or to what extent which kept me invested in the story and how things would get played out.
In the beginning, I did not really like Beth's character. I found her kind of whiny and she seemed more concerned with herself than her husband being accused of murder. Beth seemed to assume Tom's guilt as being plausible without question. Even after 8 years of marriage without an inkling of something dark lurking beneath the surface. A few of the characters I was not sure if they were reliable. so I kept guessing how they may or may not have been involved. I was very surprised at the two back-to-back plot twists at the end. I didn't anticipate the ending or the reveal in the epilogue. I really enjoyed this book and would encourage you to pick it up.
A very sincere thank you to @netgalley and @avonbooks for the digital ARC, in exchange for an honest review.
Just a wild ride of a book. Thank you, NetGalley for the chance to read the advance copy for my review.
The Serial Killer's Wife was a wild ride, I had to finish this one in a long marathon read. It kept me on the edge of my seat, and almost fell off the seat. Very well written by Alice Hunter. Not the usual mystery and suspense. A whole new way of grabbing the reader into.a story. Brilliant.
The book cover really drew me in! This book has so many twist and turns and kept me interested and guessing until the very last page. If you are interested in suspense novels, this one is for you!
Although I enjoyed the story I felt it was slightly dragged out. Didn’t connect with the characters as much as I would have liked to but it was still suspenseful and interesting!
The Serial Killer's Wife by Alice Hunter was an okay read. I've provided it with the rating of 3/5 stars. It is classified as a thriller, yet, I did not find the storyline very "thrilling". The characters were uninteresting and very dull, but the synopsis and title is what really kept me engaged and wanting to read to the end. Beth Hardcastle has been married to her husband, Tom, for about 7 years. They have an adorable 3 year old named Poppy. On the outside looking in, their lives seem close to perfection as one could hope to get. Beth has established her own coffee shop/pottery studio and Tom is a big whig at a business in London. The two get along fairly well in their marriage, except when it comes to the bedroom. You see... Tom has a dark side. He likes to get very naughty during sex and sometimes wants Beth to engage in actions that she's uncomfortable with. This leads Tom to stray around... When Tom doesn't make it home in time for dinner or to read to Poppy and tuck her into bed one Monday night, Beth becomes worried. She calls around for him without any success. Finally there's a ring at the front door. It's odd, because if it were Tom, he has a key. Why ring the bell? Beth opens the door to find the police standing there... They're searching for Tom who is now a murder suspect in the death of his ex-girlfriend who suspiciously disappeared 8 years ago. Beth is sent reeling and as the story unfolds before the readers, more and more of Tom's and eventually Beth's secrets are revealed.
While the storyline seems amazing, the characters were flat and the pace of the story was too slow. There were unnecessary details and fillers that could have been cut from the final draft. While the book wasn't terrible, it is not one that I will read again.
Thank you NetGalley, Harper 360 and the author for a chance to read and review this book in the exchange for an honest review.
I found this to be weirdly predictable even though I think that's because I read far too many thrillers. I really enjoyed this overall and I couldn't put it down. I would definitely read more from this author.
For me, the main problem with this book is that all of the characters were really flat. Each has their defining characteristic and the whole book showcased that characteristic with each new chapter. Also, the main character’s motivations seemed so wildly out of left field, making the ending unbelievable. Sure, there were hints along the way, but even then, the “twist” was uncharacteristic and didn’t make the book a worthwhile read for me.
This book felt like it could have been shorter, it really started to drag towards the end. I did like all of twists and was quite surprised by the revel at the end. 3/5
WOW, not the ending I was expecting. I am unable to give a summery without giving to many spoilers but I can say that my attention was caught when the police knocked on the door and then I waited and waited. Each time something happened, I wanted it to go just a little farther. How did the journalist not follow her to the café? How did they not see them climb over the fence? The urgency would come in briefly then change to a new chapter. I wondered as I read about Beth knowing his secret why she didn’t pack up and leave and I wanted to know more about her relationship and the fear she felt. I keep reading to find out. The ending was a surprise. Sadly, the majority of books I have read lately I can tell you the ending by the first chapter but not The Serial Killer’s Wife. I was completely caught off guard.

Beth Hardcastle is unsettled one evening as it is time to put her daughter, Poppy, to bed and her husband Tom hasn't returned home from work yet. When two police officers arrive at her door, she fears peril may have come to Tom. But even her imagination couldn't compete with the reality she is about to endure.
This is a stunner of a debut for Alice Hunter, so first and foremost: Brava!!
The Serial Killer's Wife had the trappings of all my favorite thrillers: short, fast-paced chapters, alternating narrators, and flashbacks peppered throughout. I had several hunches throughout the book that never turned out to be right, and when the final twist came I was completely blindsided. I wholeheartedly recommend this to thriller lovers.
