Journey Through Fire and Ice is a story that just keeps giving me the goosebumps. Not only is it set in the far north, but in a very unhospitable area of the world. I for one, cannot imagine living that far north and have no real desire to see what it is like first hand. I admire Deanne Burch for her commitment to her husband and his dream of living with the people in Kivalina, Alaska!
The hardships are real and Deanne makes no bones about how difficult it was. I don't know that a woman of today would put aside all her desires to see her husband's desires fulfilled. I'm not sure whether she's crazy or brave or maybe a combination of the two.
Through all the trials and tribulations, Deanne does learn that she has so much more strength in her than she thought! It takes a woman of immense courage to go through living in a place like Kivalina and still have fond memories of the people and trials that made life so hard.
This book was an interesting read, especially for someone like me who really doesn't relish the cold! I could see how living with the people in this desolate land would make for some very intense friendships! When you need help to survive, and people come to help, you know you have the right kind of people in your life! I don't think they would have survived without that measure of trust in the people around them!
