I am sorry for the inconvenience but I don’t have the time to read this anymore and have lost interest in the concept. I believe that it would benefit your book more if I did not skim your book and write a rushed review. Again, I am sorry for the inconvenience.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to this book!
I enjoyed this one and I highly recommend
In The Husbands, a female attorney in Austin moves to a subdivision in which the husbands do all the work. While it seems perfect at first, things take a bad turn. The ending of this book is fantastic! Thank you, NetGalley, for the advance reader digital copy of this book.
Don’t know if I’d be as strong as Nora if push came to shove and I had to commit to a decision but I loved how the author wrote the whole thing. Twists and turns, surprise ending.
Loved this book and this series. SOrry for the late response. Trying to clean up my netgalley. I have previously shared my loved on my instagram page and didn't realize that I was forgetting to leave reviews on netgalley itself, My apologies.
I found this book utterly engrossing, even as someone who doesn't normally gravitate towards thrillers. The plot and characters were captivating, and though I guessed certain elements of the plot ahead of time, the details of the "twist" gripped me when revealed.
3.5 Stars Rounded up to 4 - B
I received this book in 2021 on Audio from NetGalley for review. Sadly, I had forgotten about it and am just getting to it now.
I enjoyed the narrator's voice (Allyson Ryan) and think she did a great job with the "acting". I was fully engaged and enjoyed the story. It was engaging and a fun ready with a nice little twist at the end. I have a husband that carry's the weight of home life, so it's tough for me to relate to Nora's situation, but at the same time - I thought that this was a unique story and very well done.
I'll definitely read more from Chandler Baker.
The Husbands was gripping and entertaining. This one will suck you in and keep you engaged to the very last page. 3.5 stars
Thanks NetGalley for the review copy. I enjoyed this one. I look forward to reading more books by Baker.
The Husbands started out really strong. I was immediately drawn to the mystery of the fire along with the realities of motherhood and the expectations of being a woman in today's world. However, after the first 25% I felt the story started to loose steam. I'm sure many will enjoy this book. It certainly paints a very accurate and realistic portrayal of the everyday challenges many woman experience compared to their male counterparts.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook.
This was definitely different from her - such a funky but interesting take on the stepford wifes. Also, reviewed on Goodreads.
Fun read that’s hard to put down: satisfying thriller and makes you think beyond just the story. Great book club choice!
Solid narration, but the story left something to be desired for me. I had high hopes for Chandler Baker's sophomore novel but this one missed the mark for me.
3.75 stars
The Husbands follows the story of Nora, a successful attorney, who is frustrated with the lack of help at home she gets from her husband. During a search for a new home to accommodate for baby #2, Nora discovers the community of Dynasty Ranch, where it seems like the husbands run the households and support their wives' careers.
I really liked the majority of this book. Major Stepford Wives vibes. The part where I started losing a bit of interest was towards the end, when it became a bit science-fiction-y, and reminded me of "When No One is Watching."
That being said, this book REALLY made me think about roles in a household and motherhood in general.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in return for my honest review!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. At times it made me laugh and at times it made me gasp! Fast pasted. Even though it wasn't an original concept (reminded me of "The Stepford Wives") it kept my interest! OOO, what it would be like to have the male gender under your thumb, Would life been a little more peaceful then? HAHA. I gave this book 4 stars and would love to read more from this author!
The generation of women who were raised being told they could have it all have learned that having it all and doing it all are two different things, but that they often go hand in hand. Yes, women can have it all, but in order to be anything and everything, they also have to do everything. Chandler Baker’s The Husbands focuses on the overworked wife and mother, but with surprise twist, which you’ll soon discover once you dive into this book about an exclusive Texas neighborhood and the successful women who live there.
Nora Spangler is living the life she always thought she wanted. She has a thriving career as an attorney, a beautiful daughter and another baby on the way, and a husband she loves. But Nora is at her limit. Every day, she is overtaxed, exhausted by the mounting pile of stuff she must get through just to keep her family running. When she and her husband look for a new home in the prestigious neighborhood Dynasty Ranch, she learns that the women there have success at work and help at home by way of their husbands who aren’t afraid to pitch in. As Nora considers the home in Dynasty Ranch, she grows closer to this group of women, hoping to learn their secrets and wishing that their attentive and accommodating husbands will rub off on her own. However, when Nora is asked to take on the case of a mysterious fire in the community that killed the husband of one of the group’s women, she begins to discover what’s really lurking behind the walls of Dynasty Ranch.
Chandler Baker’s The Husbands is an eye-opening, affirming account of the cost of being a woman trying to have it all in today’s busy world. What’s not to be expected is the measures the women of this novel take to make their dreams a reality. No spoilers here, but this isn’t your average power woman novel!
Baker tells an entertaining story as she introduces us and Nora to the women of Dynasty Ranch and lets us in on their seemingly perfect world. Nora is relatable in her struggle to juggle all the people and duties in her life, and is unassuming in her quest to discover how the Dynasty Ranch women manage to handle it all. Will you see what she doesn’t? Is everything as blissful in Dynasty Ranch as it seems?
I listened to an audiobook production of The Husbands, courtesy of NetGalley and Libro.fm., which I recommend. Narrator Allyson Ryan adopts a variety of voices and accents to bring to life the novels’ many characters, and reads at a smooth, even clip.
Engrossing darkly humorous mystery that really kept me guessing right up to the shocking conclusion.
I really wish I would’ve read this physically as k struggled with the audiobook itself. This story is such an interesting one and these characters were too bland in my opinion. This book was way too predictable and I disliked some moments. I appreciate that it talked about feminism but that’s just not something I personally like reading in fiction. I loved the author’s note and definitely would read more from her in the figure, but this was a bit underwhelming.
I listened to this one last Summer on eARC. I don't know why my review didn't stick but I thought this book was good. It gave me characters to love, I loved the narrator so much and how much energy she brought. Thanks NetGalley!
I enjoyed this story about a couple going through the challenges of life, raising a toddler with another one on the way, managing careers and household, while trying to navigate the burden of the roles we have within our marriages and the fair division of labor once our second job as spouses and parents begin. I liked Nora and Hayden and thought they were pretty typical of most couples, but Nora’s resentment about how much she does compared to what her husband does is quite telling. This is a common issue in most households and, if left unchecked, creates most of the arguments between couples.
It doesn’t surprise me that Nora is quite taken with the community of Dynasty Ranch, where she and Hayden are house-hunting. Upon meeting some of the other wives in the neighborhood, Nora is impressed at the careers these women have, while raising children and they all have husbands who bend over backwards to help out!
For me, the story takes on a Stepford Husbands feel when one of the husbands stops to help Nora change a flat tire and appears to be quite distressed that his chores aren’t completed. Nora doesn’t seem to think too much about it and when she and her husband begin seeing one of the residents for couples therapy, she is quite impressed at her husband’s change in manner, attitude and behavior. It doesn’t take long to see where the story is heading, but the getting there was quite interesting and entertaining. The last few chapters of the book were pretty intense and held some surprises for me that I wish had been managed differently, but overall, an enjoyable story.
My Final Verdict: Fans of domestic thrillers and mysteries will enjoy this story and the heightened anticipation of what is coming next will add to the thrills. I recommend the audio version for the dramatic scenes and visualization the story brings.
