I had such high hopes for this book after reading Blacktop Wasteland last year and it being one of my favorite books.
This book didn't even read like the same author. The dialogue was so over the top and cheesy I couldn't get on board with it at all. If I had to read "he sucked his teeth" one more time...I'd pay someone to count the number of times it appeared. The action was definitely nonstop but so wildly far fetched that everyone in the book should've been dead eight times over.
Overall incredibly disappointing.
A violent (very violent) tale of two fathers' attempts to make amends to their gay sons after their murder. A lot of this story was hard to listen to, but the narrator was perfect and really brings the characters to life.
I really enjoyed this. This author is new to me but I had heard such good reviews that I had to give it a try. Kind of reminded me of a Robert B. Parker Spenser book and his side kick Hawk. Which in my mind is high praise! Maybe a bit darker but the wit in it was similar. Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for this copy for review
Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for allowing me to listen to an ARC audio of this book.
Narrated by Adam Lazarre-White, Razorbade Tears is one hell of a book. And Adam L-W is a wonderful narrator. I wish he would narrate all the audiobooks I listen to. He speaks slowly and clearly. His tone and clarity add to the suspense when the story gets suspenseful. He gives the many characters their own voices and none sound silly or awkward. Adam L-W made a really great book all that much greater.
I don't know much about S.A. Cosby. He has written a number of books. This is my first introduction to him (I think it's a 'him' based on the writing but glad to be proved wrong). I plan on reading many more of his books. They have humor, gut-wrenching true emotions, and broken heroes who plod ahead anyway. Razorblade Tears is the story of two fathers who set out to revenge the murder of their two sons. When the sons were alive, neither father accepted their sons' gayness or that the two were married. The guilt hangs heavy over their heads. All they can do is find and take out the murderers. Though the book verges on the mythical and fantastical as far as getting the job done, it is right on the mark when each one talks about the shame of not acknowledging, and not loving their sons exactly as they were.
I loved this book. I loved listening to this book. I'm looking forward to the new book which I believe is out already. Thank you Macmillan and thank you Netgalley
I was excited to get a copy of this book because I have heard nothing but good things about it, while I didn't like the audiobook, I did enjoy the hardback copy I had. Very different than I usually read but glad I read it.
Holy Shit, this was SOOOO good!!! This a story about loss and sorrow and regret and love and revenge. This is a raw and violent story, but hot damn, I seriously could not put it down. Do yourself a favor and listen to this one; Adam Lazarre-White did an incredible job narrating. And now I'm off to find and binge read ALL of Cosby's other books.
This just wasn't for me. I went in expecting this book to be something that it wasn't. I can understand why people would love this. It's a story of revengage. You follow these two men, one black and one white whose sons were married to each other and killed for their orentiation. I thought it was too late to make a mends with their sons that were dead. If they didn't like or love them when they were alive then why care now? I also didn't like the characters they seemed very flat.

i feel like i say this a lot but this book is definitely one of my favorites. after reading and really enjoying blacktop wasteland and cosby’s writing style i knew i was going to love this one. i mean this book was action packed from beginning to end. there was seriously never a dull moment which kept me fully invested.
the character development was amazing. i felt like i knew buddy lee and ike inside and out by the end of the book. also buddy lee is hysterical and the banter the two characters shared was amazing. i loved watching their friendship evolve in the novel and in true thriller fashion the twists and turns were killer! he also did an amazing job tackling racism & homophobia.
also side note this thriller made me cry but the ending was just so perfectly done. in short - get this book!!
The story follows two fathers as they seek vengeance after the brutal murder of their two gay sons.
This was such a powerful story that tackles homophobia and racism and the author does a great job blending heartbreaking moments with humor. Ike and Buddy Lee didn't accept their sons for who they were while they were alive, but come together to investigate their deaths and ultimately recognize the flaws in their beliefs. It is action-packed and a bit gory at times, but a moving story of these dads who go to extreme lengths for revenge.
The audio narration is excellent - highly recommend this format.
This is the first book by S.A. Cosby that I've read. I am hooked. Ike and Buddy Lee are so beautifully nuanced, and real. The action scenes are fabulous, And I was riveted until the end. The performance by Adam Lazarre-White was perfection.
Razorblade Tears was one of the most incredible books I've ever read. Sure there's heavy violence, including gun violence, but ultimately this is a story about family and supporting those you love even when you don't understand who they are. I think there's a lot of hope in books like this, stories like this. Those that feature hardened, mean men who will sacrifice everything for vengeance and justice.
There's honestly not enough I can say to really sum up all the ways this book made me feel, but I can say this: Read this book. You will not regret it.
"Razorblade Tears" is an immersive story of revenge and redemption. Author S.A. Cosby truly is one to watch. The audiobook narrator did a tremendous job of capturing the tone of the book without being overly dramatic.
Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ALC in exchange for my honest review.
This is my first book by this author and I want to read everything he's written now. It's a seamless story of revenge and family and so much more. This is a fantastic audiobook; I'll listen to more from this narrator.
As a personal preference I usually try to avoid really sensitive topics for my personal reading, but I really enjoyed this book. A lot of books are from a mothers perspective, and to have this show a fathers love for this children was really refreshing. The twists and turns that the book took were so well thought out, and wonderfully explained. The plot built and did not disappoint at the end. I felt like the end was given thought and consideration, which a lot of books tend to lack in my opinion. Overall, I thought this was a wonderful book and would recommend.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. This is one of best books l've read so far this year. I couldn't put it down. I laughed & cried. I hope there is a movie adaptation of it.
5 star for the audio version
This is definitely a 5 star audiobook
The narrator really captured the tone of this book, and had a wonderful voice to listen to. The production quality was top notch, but not overly done or overly dramatic.
The story itself is a brutal yet beautiful one. Violent and redemptive.
A redemption story filled with revenge and regrets and moments you can never get back. Two young men are gunned down, and their fathers are determined to right some wrongs. Ike and Buddy Lee had very little in common, except they were both estranged from their sons because of their refusal to accept their gay relationship. But revenge bands the unlikely pair together. In this brutal telling, both fathers get to know their sons through the people that knew and loved them. Their eyes are opened to the ugliness of discrimination but it's much too late for them. There is nothing sugar coated here - this is violent, ugly and raw. But within that darkness, is the light of emotional bonds and love. Character driven but also action packed and filled with thought provoking scenes at every turn of the page.
I couldn't imagine anyone but Adam Lazarre-White narrating this. He has the perfect cadence setting the tone and drama just right. He was easy to follow without any confusion. The excerpt from All The Sinners Bleed had me adding that to my TBR list immediately.
Two fathers - one black, one white - both with troubled pasts and who have each had difficulty accepting that their son was gay, find out their sons have been brutally murdered. Buddy Lee has been in prison previously but has tried to walk the line, owns his own business and works hard to be the man his family deserves. Buddy Lee definitely still struggles with life. When their worlds collide after the death of their sons, and police coming up empty handed, they decide they must take matters into their own hands.
A large part of this book deals with two fathers seeking revenge. But they are also each dealing with a gut punching loss of a child, a child they didn't fully accept and now that can never be mended. The regret they both carry is a huge burden.
This book was action packed and suspenseful. It kept me on the edge of my seat through the majority of the book. It was also heartbreaking and real and raw and as a parent, I could feel their pain while reading the words. I went through a range of emotions throughout the story, which to me makes for an amazing book. Highly recommend!
Thanks to Netgalley & Macmillan Audio for an ALC in exchange for my honest review!
I've been hearing about Razorblade Tears everywhere and I kind of passed it up due to how popular it was. The last few super hyped books I've read (I won't name names) I've been disappointed by, so I was worried that would happen again. Boy, was I wrong! I really enjoyed Razorblade Tears. It had so much depth - racism, homophobia, right vs. wrong, rehabilitation, forgiveness, redemption, the list goes on and on. I literally listened to this entire book in one go and I would highly recommend it to anyone. The narrator of this audiobook worked really well with the tone of the story. I look forward to reading/listening to more S.A. Cosby, as he is clearly a very talented writer.
This is my first novel by S.A. Cosby, and I was not disappointed. When Isiah and his husband are brutally murdered, two ex-con dads, one Black and one white, who never accepted that their sons were gay, come together to seek revenge. Along the way they learn more about themselves and overcoming their prejudices, not only with sexuality, but race as well.
This book is very fast paced and very violent. There are also a lot of racist, homophobic, and transphobic slurs throughout, so be aware of that. It was really hard to stop listening to this book. The writing, pacing, and plot were all excellent and I enjoyed getting to know the characters. The narrator was great. I also liked the little bits of humor that were sprinkled in to break up the tension. Of course, suspension of belief is required, as it is with most thrillers. I highly recommend!
Thank you to McMillan Audio, author S.A. Cosby, and NetGalley for gifting me a copy of this audiobook. My opinions are my own.
