The Thorne Ranch is at the centre of this story. The Thorne family is grieving for two of their loved ones, lost in an accident. Four years on, and the pain is still palpable.
Cal is a celebrity rodeo invited to contribute to a charity do. He is a good and sensible guy. When he goes to the Mayor's office to introduce himself and establish what has been planned, Amy comes to meet him and receives the shock of her life. Is she seeing a ghost?
Cal was adopted at birth and now realises that he has a family. A mother, twin brothers, and a nephew. Amy is the sister in law. At first she doesn't know how to react in his company, and soon find that they are attracted to each other. They develop a relationship which appears to be impossible, but where there is a will, there is a way. There are a few ups and downs, but the conclusion is beautiful.
I received an eARC from Netgalley and the views expressed are my personal opinion.
A truly great story full of feel good factor. Amy is trying to raise money to rebuild the community centre, and organised a rodeo, Cal is the spitting image of her dead husband, adopted as a child he turns out to be his brother, and comes to town to ride the rodeo, and wins the heart of Amy, Henry and the rest of his new family.
What a great start to a new series. Cowboy's Unexpected Family, is wonderful. I like how they took a touchy subject like adoption and death and made it work for this story.
I received Cowboy's Unexpected Family as part of a NetGalley giveaway.
Cal Pierce thinks he's only doing a favor for an old friend when he lands in the small town of Darby Crossing, Texas, to headline a rodeo, his last before retirement. What he doesn't expect is to find his birth family--his biological mother, two half-brothers...and the widow of a third half-brother and her son. For her part, Amy Thorne is gobsmacked when a man who is the spitting image of her late husband walks into her office. As the new family gets to know one another, and as they prepare for the rodeo that might give a boost to the small town, sparks fly between Cal and Amy. But will sworn wanderer Cal be able to find happiness in a settled life, and will they be able to move past the ghost of Amy's late husband Luke?
This was a sweet story. Amy and Cal have great chemistry and the buildup to their relationship was realistic and well done. 95% of it, I really liked and would otherwise look forward to reading more. However, I strongly wish they wouldn't have broached the school textbook issue, because it was superfluous (at least at the moment, I expect Rafael's story will come in a future book) and, frankly, the argument is in bad faith. I don't care how many racist school boards don't buy your books, misrepresenting history for money is wrong and shameful and it's a huge reason why this country is the way it is today. For such a small storyline, it really soured me on the book as whole.
