For this the saying "lost in translation" has a large play in this book.
I found the short stories jumpy and didn't flow and i think this is due to the translation of the book. It also wasn't erotic, which is miss leading and also setting this book up to be something its not.
This wasn't for me. What drew me in was the title, the cover and what was supposed to me erotica short stories.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me with a copy to leave an honest review.
I loved the concept of this one a lot. However, I kind of don't like that this book is told from the 2nd person's point of view. I loved it on the first and second stories, but on the rest of the stories, it feels distant and disconnected. The stories themselves did not really engage me and I really think this is because of the point of view used. I also understand that since this one is a translated book, it may not entirely show the same ideas, concepts, and/or prose as the original one.
Like most anthologies of short stories this is a mixed bag. The good ones are thrilling, sexy and evocative. The bad range from dull to downright disturbing. I think some of the poetry may be lost in translation as a few of the idiomatic phrases used were a bit jarring.
A bit of a mixed bag. I enjoyed some of the stories, mostly the earlier ones, but got a bit bored about half way through as they didn't have much oomph.
I enjoyed the first story but after finishing the second, which contains incest (maybe a reference to Oedipus?!), I was completely put off reading any further stories.
Not what I expected at all.
Thank you Monica, Dorothy and Katakana Editores for the digital copy of this book. Honestly, I was intrigued after reading first few pages. But as I went on, it became uncomfortable for me when gory details became viciously carnal.
Narration is prepossessing and writing style is smooth. The storyline is too dark, twisty and mind-boggling. Taboo subjects are revealed in a way which emphasizes harsh limelight on reality and dark mind. I found few chapters enthralling and the rest uneasy. I think this book should warn about sensitive topics beforehand.
I couldn't connect with this book. Not necessarily readers have to agree with me. If you like reading something wierd, complicated and twisted, then you may try reading this novel.
I didn't connect with these stories on any level--not for their story, not for their eroticism, not for their characters, not for their aesthetic intention. They baffled me. I like the title of the collection.
Sorry but this book isn’t for me. Couldn’t get into it and quickly put the book down. Easily forgotten.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to see an ARC
I'll just go straight to the point. Each story in this collection has the perfect balance of sensuality and raunchiness; it is explicit yet not fully vulgar. I find that the tone of the stories are not quite much with delicacy but not quite much with passion either. And because of this, I find the book suprisingly good overall. The whole collection may be a short read, but definitely not an easy one especially with some stories that have dark themes in it.
⭐⭐Twelve short stories in translation by acclaimed Mexican author Mónica Lavín, her first book translated into English by Dorothy Potter Snyder who curated the short story selection. Meaty Pleasures explores eroticism in unknown places and situations with a universe of its own where tenderness finds its match with the cruelty of life. 🔞⚠️ Sensitive topics may be triggering for some readers. Adults only. #meatypleasure #netgalley
A glimpse here and there from each short story. Enough eroticism to cover several topics under one book. A few stories may be triggering to readers, a warning beforehand would have been useful.
Short stories written from the prescriptive of a diverse range of characters, covering topics of pleasure, sexuality, desire, voyeurism, and sexual assault. The stories give the reader an intense and explicit look at the characters innermost desires, longings and troubling thoughts, some of which are quite dark and uncomfortable to read. Personally, I don't usually gravitate towards erotic stories, however these were quick and kept me interested. It should be noted the stories contain trigger warnings, including rape, incest and the sexualisation of assault which could be triggering for some readers.
I really enjoyed reading this book! I loved the poetic nature of the author’s writing style.
However, I would not call this erotica, as it was marketed to me as erotica. It’s barely even smutty! There’s maybe 2 stories that I would call sexually explicit but not enough to market the whole book as erotica, in my opinion.
Good stories, overall! Just not erotic in my opinion
Thank you for the opportunity to read this book ARC.
I requested this compilation on a whim as I was intrigued to read erotic fiction translated from another language.
Sensual, languid and at times a little disturbing, I couldn't put the novel down. Written with both male and female characters, the stories took some surprising turns. The stories also delighted in the sensuality of everyday life, flowers in a vase were described in great detail for instance, weaving their way into a prominence in one of the tales.
I found this novel interesting from an sociological perspective as it dealt with the darker sides of human nature. I was left thinking about the stories and characters long after I put the book down. Bravo!
Note to Publisher: I'll post my review on Amazon and Barnes & Noble on Publish Date.
My Thoughts towards the book -
- 12 stories about pleasure and sexuality, and the translator articulated the book in a way which have the ability to leave you in a confused state of mind.
- It is an easy read, so I could finish the book pretty quickly.
Thanks,
Tanjim

Trigger warning: rape, incest, dark sexual content
.This book will have you on the edge of your seat or curled up in disdain. It can be a challenging read and should have trigger warnings within it as well as in the description. Sultry and erotic.
