The vibes of this book were excellent. If ever there was a sleeper hit for me, it would be this one. It took me by complete surprise. I was not expecting to be so drawn into this mysterious tale of murder. Not only was the plot tightly woven with one hell of an ending, but it was full of emotion and fraught with tension. Grief horror is one of my favourite sub genres and when it's done as great as this, it really seals why I love it so much. Highly recommend this one.
I really enjoyed this one. The entire storyline had me wanting to keep coming back for more… even on those nights where I had to be up very early in the morning. The ending had me shedding some tears, which doesn’t happen very often at all.
Malfi is one of my favorite authors. I read this one days after finishing his novel Black Mouth and the diversity in this guy's work is incredible. Come With Me is a story of grief and secrets and makes us wonder how well we can possibly know someone. And how far will we go to learn things we may want to leave unknown.
Thank you to Titan Books for providing me with an e-ARC of Come With Me by Ronald Malfi!
If I was looking for a gripping horror novel to read, Come with Me is not the one I would choose. Don't get me wrong, Come with Me is a very well-written and intriguing novel, but it's very slow-paced & felt more like a thriller/mystery than anything. I think it's the story's mood that made me put it aside for a while.
However, I picked it back up months later & very much appreciated the writing style & how well Malfi wrote the main character's grief as he recently lost his wife due to a shooting. I thought Come with Me was going to go so many different ways while reading this, and was pleasantly surprised each time it didn't go the direction I expected. Come with Me kept me wrapped around its finger until the very end.
Kind of a slow burn start, but it is worth sticking to it. This needs to be a film. I loved the idea of a serial killer and this guy trying to solve the murders for the sake of his wife. First time reading this author and I will definitely be reading more by him.
This is one hauntingly beautiful read, the execution had me feeling so much for the protagonist, I felt that I was transported right into the story.
Aaron Decker's life changes one December morning when his wife Allison is killed. Haunted by her absence—and her ghost—Aaron goes through her belongings, where he finds a receipt for a motel room in another part of the country. Piloted by grief and an increasing sense of curiosity, Aaron embarks on a journey to discover what Allison had been doing in the weeks prior to her death.
Come With Me is a beautifully crafted psychological thriller that follows one man on on a journey of grief and an a deadly obsession to find out who his wife really was. What Adam finds is a whirlpool full of secrets that he is not ready for.
This may be one of the best thrillers I've read for quite a while. It took me on a campaign of so many twists turns and zig zags that I was completely engulfed in the story. There was so many times throughout the book that I thought I had worked it all out just to be thrown into another one of the authors traps. I loved the constant guessing game.
Come With Me Possessed all the things we want in a Dark psychological thriller. It was emotional, exciting, thrilling and also had hints of the supernatural leaving the reader not knowing what was real and was not. When you combine these great. When you combine all these things with impeccable pacing, the feeling of suspense and characters that you actually care about. You've created the perfect dark psychological thriller.
It's a fantastic thing when you read a book that you love and discover a new author. It really is one of the best things about reading. If you're looking for a cracking new thriller and are contemplating reading Come With Me, just dive straight in, you will not be dissapointed.
I liked the mix of supernatural and crime thriller. I thought it was bit slow to start but once I got started, I couldn't stop reading.
This was a fantastic slow-burn of a novel. Following Decker around as he uncovered his wife's secrets after her death was so engrossing. This book was definitely unputdownable.
Perhaps the biggest idea that humanity fears is its ultimate end, specifically the physical death of the individual. The question of what happens to one’s consciousness when the body dies doesn’t generate as much emotion as what happens to those friends and family a departed person leaves behind. Death, by its very nature, creates an absence, an absence that many who are still among the living struggle to fill. Many ghost stories are not just about the ghosts that haunt them; rather, they follow those who are looking for a purpose that will help fill the absence that haunts them. Two examples of this kind of ghost story are the movie Lake Mungo and Ronald Malfi’s latest Come With Me.
Lake Mungo is a movie that uses a documentary format to tell the spine-tingling tale of Alice Palmer, a teenager who drowns in Lake Mungo and her family, who believe she is haunting them. It seems odd that this movie came out in 2009 because it accurately captures the feel of a Netflix documentary, including the testimonials of family members as they notice strange images in recordings set up to capture the ghostly phenomenon. Lake Mungo is the kind of movie that forces you to pay attention, even as its story peels back layer after layer, revealing more about Alice Palmer that even her family didn’t know. Ultimately, what haunts the Palmer family is how much they don’t know about their daughter, and their journey to find the truth is a harrowing one that leaves them with little closure and very few answers.
Come With Me, Malfi’s latest and his best so far, tells a similar story of only discovering who someone is after they’ve died. The story follows Aaron Decker, a young man who had just lost his wife Allison in a senseless shooting. As he tries to process his grief over losing the love of his life, Aaron discovers that his wife had been keeping secrets. Aaron’s journey begins with the discovery of a receipt from a motel hundreds of miles away. He soon discovers what Allison had been working on prior to her death, a project that becomes Aaron’s and one that threatens to destroy him. Malfi shows his skills at crafting mysteries, leaving an assortment of clues interspersed with red herrings, all while Aaron tries to discover not just the monster she’s been chasing but the past she’s been outrunning all her life. Malfi proves that his skills at storytelling are as precise as a watchmaker’s. One cog is Aaron, the grieving husband, who tells this story in a sort of confessional to his wife, opening a window into his emotional pain. Other smaller cogs include Malfi’s teasing of the supernatural with a level of restraint that bursts like a damn during the book’s ending. Fans of Lake Mungo will love the slow burn and harrowed protagonist of Come With Me and both movies should be taught in classes that teach writers how to create an unsettling miasma that consumes the reader.
Come with me by Ronald Malfi is both a thriller and a ghost story. It goes back and forth between genres effortlessly and after reading the authors notes you can understand where the heart of the story comes from. This was an excellent book.
COME WITH ME pulled me in and kept me glued to every page—Highly Recommend!
I LOVE Malfi’s writing and the story—that ending—My Heart!
Here’s a couple of snippets that hit me in all the feels:
‘I thought of the image I saw—or imagined I saw—standing in this very doorway nights earlier. The certainty that you were in that room right now was so profound in that moment that I felt a grim and terrible smile crack the lower half of my face. My arms itched to embrace you. A taste in my mouth was your taste, as if in anticipation of a kiss…’
‘I stood there, waiting for you to materialize out of nothing right before my eyes. But when that didn’t happen—when the grim smile faded from my face, and the taste of you drained from my mouth—I was left with nothing but a hollow jack-o’-lantern sensation, as if someone had taken a sharp utensil and scooped out all my vital bits.’
And…
‘She opened the lid and I saw that it was filled with photographs. They were scattered about in there, in no particular order or arrangement, just loose and existing and touching each other like memories do.’
Thank you, NetGalley and Titan Books, for loaning me an eGalley of COME WITH ME in the request of an honest review.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book for an honest review.
This book is a slow burn written by a grieving husband whose wife was shot in a shopping mall. The husband discovers his wife has been researching in secret the murders of young women over a span of many years in many different communities across the US.. The husband begins his own research based on his wife’s research files and discovers his dead wife has a history he knows nothing about. This is a mystery read and a spiritual ghost story and the writing is palpable and scary at times. Read this book you will not be disappointed.
5 stars
“Come with me,” is the last thing Aaron’s wife says to him before she’s gunned down by a mall shooter.
“Come with me.” A fairly innocuous and common phrase, but one that pumps like life blood throughout this novel. A summoning. An action. A last demand.
“Come with me,” to the locked box in their shared closet. Find the key and open the mystery within. An accordion folder with the crumbs of a serial killer. A secret obsession passing hands.
“Come with me,” as Aaron tries to solve the case that Allison took to the grave. Follow the pieces of her hidden life. Follow the flickering light of her ghost.💡
Come with me is a novel that’s full of twists and revenge, of sorrow and obsession, and shadows of the living and the dead. I genuinely could not get enough of this one. Please SOMEONE make this a tv show.
I have heard so much praise over this book that I started it 3 different times. Why? Because I couldn't get into it. It just felt long and drawn out and to be honest, I just didn't find anything special about it. Was hoping it had more supernatural aspects to it. Malfi usually writes spooky more. This wasn't a bad book, but it just didn't keep my attention. I finally pushed through it.
Also, it was extremely depressing. Trigger warnings for anyone who is grieving or has lost someone recently.
Huge thank you to @netgalley for this #gifted eARC!

Wow! This was one heck of a ride!
I went in to this one blind and would suggest you do the same. The perfect book to start off fall!
This book is listed as part horror on GoodReads but I would say it’s more Thriller/Suspense with some very creepy-not going to want to read in the dark-vibes. It was so well done! I felt like I was right in the story with the main character and I finished it in just a couple sittings!
Definitely recommend!
Ever since I read Snow last year by Malfi I’ve been wanting to try another one of his books so when I saw this was available on NetGalley I grabbed it. This is a chilling tale and even though there might not be tons of twists the writing and fast plot were enough to keep me engaged and interested. I can’t go into too many details without giving the ending away but I am getting rather good at guessing every possible ending except the one the author uses these days 🥴 Definitely worth the read if you like anther sleuth type mysteries!
Even though I’m fairly new to Ronald Malfi’s books, I have really enjoyed what I’ve read so far - so I was really excited to have the opportunity to review his latest Come With Me.
I can never really choose my favorite genre. I love supernatural/horror stories, and I love mysteries, and Come With Me is a great blend of everything I love. The story begins as Aaron’s wife Alison is killed. While he is working through his grief, he finds a receipt for a motel his wife stayed at without him, and he needs to unravel the mystery. While the beginning does tend to drag a little, definitely hang in there. You won’t be sorry… Come With Me definitely does not disappoint.
An everyday decision with life-changing consequences.
Aaron’s Decker’s choice not to accept an invitation from his wife Allison to go out for breakfast , where she is caught up in a shooting incident and killed, leaves him bereft with grief. As part of that grieving process, Aaron realises that he did not know Allison as well as he thought he had, and discovers qualities she had and learns about an obsession of hers that he decides to take responsibility for himself in order to bring it to a conclusion.
I really enjoyed the way the author alternated the story between present and past timelines in order to move the novel forward, and the various strands of this storyline kept me guessing until the end as to how it was ultimately going to be resolved.
Hats off to the author for delivering what for me was an atmospheric, ghostly and emotion-filled reading experience which I thoroughly enjoyed. I will certainly be looking out for other works from this author.
In 2018, Wendi Winters and four others were murdered at work, when a person came into their news office and opened fire. Ronald Malfi, the author and Winters’ friend, dedicates Come With Me to her and explains the relationship in the Author’s Note. Allison’s tragedy is close to this experience and the following story is a heart-wrenching tale of love, true crime, horror, and suspense.
Aaron Decker is a an excellent main character. His reaction to his wife’s murder and subsequent actions are believable and his grief is palpable. Readers will come to know Allison through him even though the entirety of the book takes place after her death. It brings to mind King’s Bag of Bones as another husband tries to reconcile his wife’s untimely death and later strives to discover his spouse’s secrets. Be sure to hold on to your heart.
The horror in this book is intertwined with true crime and the depth of relationships. Malfi blends in the supernatural in an organic way and it is sure to appeal to a wide variety of readers. This book will likely appeal to readers of true crime, horror, books about relationships and loss, and many others.
Come With Me is superbly written and makes for an engaging and fast-paced read. The heart and the emotions come through solidly and it is clear that it is a story dear to Malfi. So many of his other books do this is as well; it is clearly a strength for this author. Be sure to pick this book up and then make your way through Ronald Malfi’s spectacular back catalog.
