I liked this book and the supernatural elements. I really liked the school element and a retelling of Van Helsing.
Mina must go to a rehabilitation school for the supernatural after a deadly patrol night.
She makes friends and romance while uncovering her missing weeks.
She doesnt always get it right but she figures it out.
A great start to a new series. Well developed, believable characters set in a fantastic background with plenty of space and time to grow the series. Mina is a young woman who has trained to fight the wrongs committed by any of the supernatural population. After being missing for a short while, Mina is found wounded with two vampire corpses......not good. With no memory of how she came to be in this predicament, Mina will be sentenced to a rehabilitation center. But not just any center, one that bears the name of her great great grandfather. The story and the character interactions from this point on center on solving the problem of her lost time and developing the central group for the series. This series is off to a GREAT start.
Right off the bat, I almost DNF'ed this book, but I am a sucker for anything Van Helsing and am so happy that I stuck around!
The "first" meeting of Mina and Sacha is just crazy, and once you get into the book the story becomes very hard to put down. I enjoyed the mix of characters, and again DON"T give up keep reading. I really enjoyed this book and am off to read more in the series.

Fast paced and full of action! Twists and turns to keep you engage! Enemies to lovers! This book was a nice reminder that sometimes a book full of familiar tropes can be just as fun as the first time you read them. I loved the characters, and surprisingly wasn't turned off by the romance (when I usually am), I'm looking forward to hopefully picking up the sequel!
Thank you to Netgalley and publishers for offering me a free e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
Well this was something! Definitely feels like your average YA academic paranormal romance, but it was fun! A quick and easy read that wasn't perfect, but still left me wanting to read the next one!
This was such a fun and quick read! I really loved this take on the Van Helsings. I love when a book has a strong bad ass main character and that is what Mina is. The world building was sort of fast paced and easy to follow which was nice. All in all I really loved this book and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
3.5 stars
Mina is a reaper, a human who helps police the supernatural community. She ends up framed for murders she can't remember committing, because of which she is thrown into Van Helsing Academy, an institute meant to help rehabilitate supernatural criminals, which also happens to have been founded by her family. As a reaper, and a Van Helsing, who is accused of murdering a couple of supernaturals unjustly, this isn't the safest place for her to be.
This is a typical YA paranormal fantasy romance that takes place in a school-type setting. It wasn't remarkable, and it had its flaws, but I blitzed through it in a few hours, and I wouldn't mind reading the next one.
**ARC received by the author and publisher of NetGalley in an exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.**
This book really caught my attention because a rehabilitation center for vampires, shifters, and witches who don't like to follow the rules in a modern world? I’m in! But I just want to inform you all that I’m not a fan a fan of vampires and all other supernatural stuff but this is the reason why I wanted to read more about them! The first few chapters are a little bit of fuzzy to me, the parents of Mina are being unreasonable sending their child to the academy and finding a solution to their problem, like why would you do that to your only child? Every chapter is so exciting I finished this book immediately, it also help me to get rid of my reading slump. This book is so easy to read and its so funny that I enjoyed it more than I expected. Hoping to read the rest of the series!
Thak u Netgalley for give me this arc in exchange for a honest review.
I really liked the story and how the characters develop, it also has a very original and funny premise that made me get hooked much more.
We have a great variety of creatures in this story and I love how the author's pen takes us into her story, the characters, their personalities and more.
It was a very light and enjoyable read that I enjoyed very much and I highly recommend it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Phoenix Reign Publishing for the ARC.
The story is just not for me unfortunately.
I like the idea of the plot and its interesting concepts, but I was not hooked by anything, and I was not interested in learning what happens next.
Fans of paranormal genre should give this a try, as I can see it would appeal to a.lot.
Young adult paranormal action books with a cross-species romance has been over used since Meyer's Twilight saga but O'Neale may be a trend of bring it back. Dark academia is always a sub-genre that will make me smile and despite Sasha's Russian rough Shifter exterior being very similar to Richelle Mead Demitri, I loved the book and binge read the whole thing in a matter of hours.
Though, as I am a fan of action I wanted more fight training or even play fighting between Mina and Sasha to take place in the book. But, the mystery element of the book made of this lack as the twists of who put Mina into her seemingly bloodlust predicament wove throughout making me constantly look for plot easter eggs.
This book had a VERY slow start, I almost DNF'd it, but I decided to keep reading. We really went from 0-60 with ever component of this book. The romance, the betrayal, the action.
A great start to a series, I look forward to reading the rest of the books.
*Thank you to the publisher for this eARC.
Great first start in a new series. This has a very heavy Vampire Academy feel to it but still manages to find its footing as an original storyline.
Overall great world-building and characters. I.look forward to seeing where this series goes.
What a unique and fun story! I'm excited to see where this series ends up going!
Mina (yes, I know) is a Van Helsing. They are part of the supernatural legacy, which in this world includes setting up a rehabilitation facility for supernaturals that step out of line. The group tasked with policing supernaturals is where we meet Mina. She's got a little bit of an issue with authority, and it's that mindset that ends up putting her alone and in trouble. When she resurfaces, she's got some missing time, but has been recorded on camera killing two vampires.
This killing ends up sending Mina into the same rehab facility that she visited as a kid, but this time is in a very different capacity. There's clearly more at play here, so her father endorses her getting sentenced to the facility in order to gather more intel. This facility is nothing like I expected. It's more like a boarding school with very harsh punishments. The characters we meet here are also pretty amazing. Are there bad guys? Sure, but the majority of the characters that we meet are sympathetic paranormals all there for questionable reasons.
So, what's missing? Well, of course there's romance! It really sizzle between Mina and Sacha, an alpha who seems just as reluctant to like her as she is him. These two, however, end up being the best support system (other than Kiera, of course!). We get some resolution to Mina's mystery, but there is so much more I want to know. I can't wait to see where she ends up in future installments and they can't get here fast enough!
Van Helsing Academy was a fun, fast-paced read and I really enjoyed it! It has heavy Vampire Academy vibes without being a copycat. If you enjoy fantasy-academy type novels, you’ll love Van Helsing Academy!
This read was very slow to start. It took me until chapter three to even care about Mina.
That being said the idea that Van Helsing had a family and established a school where super naturals who had gone wrong could find a new path was totally awesome.
I loved that idea.
I wasn't really sold on mina but I loved the characters around her. They made me want to see things through til the end. I think my favourite moment was the idea of a wear wearing pink pj's daning and singing to Taylor Swift got me hooked.
This is one to watch
I think this was really good! It’s a fresh take on supernatural not usually seen in YA books these days. It was well written and kept me hooked the whole time
if you love vampires and the tale of Van Helsing, you need to sink your teeth into this book!! ... absolutely enjoyable!
Mina Val Helsing wakes up after being in a coma for two months. There is camera footage of her killing two vampires but she has no memory of this incident. Mina is put on trial and then convicted to Van Helsing Academy which is a supernatural rehab for vampires, shifters, witches, and the ocasional Reaper (like Mina).
Mina is trying to get her memories back and figure out exactly what happened that night. Although she starts out with the mentality that she can’t trust anyone there, she ends up making a few friends along the way.
This book was everything I hoped for! The writing is amazing, the pacing is excellent and I loved the world building. I’m so happy to find out that there are two more books in this series (that are already published so no waiting!!)!
I received this ebook from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
