I enjoyed this dark twisty mystery. Bet Rivers has returned home as interim sheriff. When a body is pulled from the local lake she sets out to identify the body and solve the murder. I really enjoyed the setting and the characters. The mystery was good with lots of twists. I look for word to reading more in this series

The characters were well-developed, and I found myself invested in their lives. The plot was well thought out and had enough twists and turns to keep me on the edge of my seat. I appreciated the attention to detail, and the author did a great job of creating a vivid world that was easy to picture in my mind.
The themes explored in the book were thought-provoking and gave me a lot to consider. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good story with well-developed characters.
Overall, I was thoroughly impressed with this book and would definitely read it again. It was a great addition to my reading collection, and I can't wait to see what else this author has in store.

It took a minute to slide right in to this small town. Bet is a little prickly. Her father brought her back to town to help him and then he passed quick and suddenly. And Bet found herself as the step-in Sheriff of her small home town.

It's a little slow to start, but once it gets going, it was very good. Bet is an interesting character and I liked her perspective of both the town, her childhood and the crimes. The twists were well plotted and kept the story moving along. I definitely followed every red herring and trusted no one. Bet had a great way of getting under your skin until you found yourself rooting her on.

I'm sad to see there isn't another one in this series. I'll keep an eye out and definitely continue when we get one. I also found this author publishes under another name, Elena Hartwell, and has another series I definitely plan to pick up.

A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.

Small town history, slow paced and to be honest I’m quite near to DNF the book. It’s because of repeating of words and sentences to fill the story. It was ashamed I love the story line and it was actually near to be great it just the repeating words .

I should not have let this book languish on my to be read shelf for so long! What a stunning mystery. I was literally guessing until the end, not something that happens very often these days. I simply cannot wait for a sequel

Sheriff Bet…
A Sheriff Bet Rivers mystery and the first in a new series. A small town with a disturbing past and a tragic history await Bet as she takes her role as interim sheriff. When a body appears Bet has her hands well and truly full. Engaging and enjoyable, well paced read with a well drawn cast.

Small towns always have the greatest secrets. When Bet takes over the sheriffs position from her dad, she thinks it’s only temporary. But then her father died and she is facing not only solving a murder, but also the attempts to get her off the sheriffs chair. Liked the story and was especially happy with the ending!

Big crime in a small town. The sheriff is new having taken over when her father, the old sheriff, died. She comes home from LA to take over but thinking it may not be permanent. When a body is discovered in a lake it becomes a Jane Doe. The small office staff is looking for the why and who when another body is uncovered from a long ago disappearance. The story is interesting and well told. I liked the side stories and the facts uncovered. I wasn't surprised with the ending. But that's okay. The book was a good story overall.

All We Buried by Elena Taylor
Sheriff Bet Rivers Mystery #1

Excellent introduction to a new series by a new-to-me author that I will definitely want to follow in this series and perhaps any book she might write. This book had me guessing and caring and hoping all would work out as Sheriff Elizabeth “Bet” Rivers as she worked to uncover the mystery of who murdered Jane Doe.

What I liked:
* The writing and how it gradually allowed me to know the characters and eventually solve the case (although I did read ahead to find out because – that’s what I di)
* Bet: intelligent, capable, wise, considering options for her future, has an interesting backstory that comes out over the course of the book, strong, resilient, and likable
* Schweitzer: Anatolian Shepherd, originally belonged to Bet’s father but becoming hers more and more – great dog!
* The history of the small town and how it impacted the community and the specific murder investigation
* The potential murderers and how they were presented and eventually exonerated…or not.
* Alma: a bit crusty but perfect at the front desk at the sheriff’s office
* Clayton: part-time deputy that may become full-time in the future has wicked mad skills that would be useful as a policeman.
* The undercurrents related to the upcoming election for sheriff
* That there was more than a murder involved
* That most of the characters were more than what I expected them to be
* The potential for romance for bet hinted at in the book.
* The flashbacks Bet had and how they played into the mystery
* That all the threads were tied up at the end of the story
* Reading the last page and feeling satisfied while wanting to read more.

What I didn’t like:
* The baddie…wow…just WOW
* Having to say goodbye and now wait for book two to be published.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely

Thank you to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Well I am excited for this new series and to see what Bet gets herself into next! I love a good small town Sherrif, people getting killed book and this didn't disappoint! it was faintly sarcastic in the main characters thoughts which I always appreciate. I love it when the author gives us a peek inside the characters head and thoughts.

All We Buried was such a fun who-dun-it! The atmosphere, the mystery, and the characters all attributed to a quick, riveting read and a five-star rating! I definitely recommend this book!

While I thought it was a little slow in the beginning, maybe the first 75 pages, there was quite a bit of set-up going on which definitely paid off in the long run! Characters with the same name (So And So, Senior and his grandson, So And So, Junior) usually confuse me and I have to keep a chart close by of the relationships to one another, but the author did a stellar job of explaining and almost mapping it out for the readers. It was a tricky hurdle, but Elena Taylor nailed it!

I’m an outdoorsy soul and appreciated the woods, the lake, and the close-knit community Taylor painted for her readers. I could feel the cold mornings that Bet would enjoy as she sat with Peter, drinking coffee and talking about his findings. I could smell the bar and hear the live music playing. I could hear the barking goodest-of-boys Schweitzer as he got his hamburger patty fresh off the grill. I loved it, I thought it was very well done- some of the best atmospheric writing I’ve come across!

The big mystery as the story unfolds was haunting and just a touch sad. I appreciated the explanation and the dialogue among the characters involved which wrapped up the story quite nicely. I don’t know when Bet will return, but I’m anxiously waiting for that moment to arrive!

Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I really enjoyed All We Buried by Elena Taylor. Sheriff Bet Rivers is a breath of fresh air as a main character in a police procedural. She has demons in her past, but they don't make her an angsty stereotype that you see too often in mystery novels. Bet could've had more confidence with her experience in LAPD, but I cut her some slack for her insecurities because of the way she was thrown into her recently deceased father's position. She is portrayed as one of the community, human, and easy to connect to, which makes for great interactions with the people around her, bringing out qualities that also make them 3D. I will be watching out for more in this series because of the great characterization!

Another unique thing about this book is the number of subplots that involve different people in the community. There's also a bit of science and history connected to the mystery, which I love, though I wish the book could've been longer to explore all these subplots better. The ending feels rushed in making conclusions, and because of the many things that were going on already, it took me a bit to make sense of what was actually the truth. In the end, the richness of the subplots and characters were enough to keep me engaged.

I will definitely read the next book!

I really enjoyed this book, Bet was a really strong character and I’m hoping to see her in a follow up book to this.

There was a lot about the town in the start of the book so it took a few chapters to get into but once it got going I was blown away, it really kept me guessing and I didn’t see the ending coming at all which is always a measure of a good book for me.

I enjoyed this book right from the start with all it's atmousphere around Collier, a small town in Washington. Things get interesting real fast when a dead boyd is found in the lake by and out of towner named Peter.

The characters showed promise right off, starting with Bet and her coming home to take over being sherif when her father dies. I appreciated the bits of information about Peters work as a geomorphologist as well. There was lots of little bits of information scattered throughout the story with Bet's nightmares and things she found out from the locals in the area. Bet has to figure out who she can trust along the way, which isn't always easy.

I really enjoyed the authors writing and how well they pulled everything together. I'm hoping the rest of the story will be revealed in the next book. I'm definitely looking forward to it.

I’m an avid thriller/mystery and even true crime reader however, it unfortunately isn't too infrequent for me to read a mystery book and to be disappointed by somethings that just don't sit right in the stories. Whether it’s how the mystery unfolds, how predictable the ending is or even the killer being introduced in the last 50 pages of the story. Nevertheless, I’m very happy to say that, these weren't the cases with this book. It made it possible for the readers to take guesses about the identity of the killer(s)- no spoilers duh! - without making it too obvious.

Without further ado, I will go on and try to summarize what the book is about so that you can decide whether you'd like to read it or not (but I sure hope you do).

Imagine a town, with a lake so hostile that almost no habitants get close. A town with a collapsed mine that is still haunted by the “ghosts” of the miners remaining underground. The vision of a past crime -a body being lowered into the lake- and a mystery of present day following the same pattern.

After her father Earle's death, Elizabeth “Bet” Rivers leaves LA where she used to work as a police officer to go back to her hometown, the mysterious town of “Collier”, trying to fill out her father's shoes as the town’s sheriff. It’s almost portrayed like an imposter syndrome: as if the whole town, even the family dog were wishing that Sheriff E. Rivers was standing for Earle (her father) rather than Elizabeth. The dynamics of these relationships between the new sheriff on the verge of an election and the members of the community takes a dramatic turn as the body of a young woman is found in the mysterious lake. And it’s quite safe for me to say that it’s very interesting to read about these changing dynamics as Bet gets closer and closer to answer all crime-related questions one by one and gains the trust of the members of the community.

Another point that struck me in this book was the author’s ability to describe the town, its people and the events. Elena Taylor quite literally paints a picture of the town. The action scenes however were really something else: it was like watching a movie for the most part. I also liked the fact that the protagonist- the sheriff was a strong female character with reasonable motives and actions. Law enforcement officers who are also females aren't always the go-to protagonists for thriller/crime books and this was a great surprise for me.

I would once again like to thank the author ant the publisher who kindly granted me access to this book. I would suggest “All We Buried” to all thriller/mystery readers and even to those who would like to get introduced to the genre.

This book just did not do it for me. There was not enough character development for any of the characters and I was not emotionally invested in anyone’s story. The “twist” fell flat for me, and I found myself just skimming to finish.

All we Buried by Elena Taylor is a great whodunit, that keeps you guessing until the end.. I liked the main character, Sheriff Bet Rivers, as well as most of the supporting characters. Especially her faithful Anatolian shepherd, Schweitzer, inherited from her Dad. The different mysteries were good and fit well together. While there was a lot of repetition throughout much of the book, it's still a good read. I was picking this book up every chance I got.

This book was good, it had suspense, intrigue, lots of investigations into who done it! This book was definitely worth reading but there were parts that were kind of drawn out I guess ?! I don't know maybe it was just me but there were parts that my mind kind of just wandered! Like I said its still worth reading, just not my top favorite! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
