The murder mystery is a fairly light one. Ally is very enjoyable and her grandfather steals the show. I always enjoy how his mind works and his conspiracy theories unfold into something that has some bearing on how the mystery unravels.
This series has so much potential, but unfortunately, the writing is hampered by the constant mention of Ally going to the Legacy House for meals, having to take the dogs for a walk, etc. and it can really wear on your nerves after a while. Plus, I can't imagine how she's staying in business when she seems to have one or two clients a week. The mysteries and plots are good, it's the rest that just needs a little fine-tuning (and more furry friends). I'm not giving up yet!
In this 2nd book in the Furry Friends mystery
series, Wisconsin veterinarian Ally Winter is still building her new practice, caring for her Gramps and trying not to fall for her high school crush, Noah Jorgensen.
While walking a dog along the shore of Lake Michigan, the dog takes off and finds the body of Pricilla Green. Noah Jorgensen is working on this case as well as some local burglaries. Gramps wants to solve the crimes, that he alone thinks are connected.
This is a nice series that isn't terribly predictable. I liked the characters and the story, and plan on reading more by this author.
I have enjoyed this series. Ally is cute and sweet. I love how there are different animals in the book. This time Ally is up to her ears trying to keeps Gramps out of Noah's investigation into the death of a young woman. The victim happens to have been a housekeeper at Gramps Legacy House. Ally is boarding a standard poodle named Domino. Domino is not well trained and runs away from Ally. When Ally catches up, Domino has found the body.
They story is fun. The characters are a hoot with Gramps trying to solve all the crimes in town and the WBW's (Willow Bluff Widows, who live at legacy house). The mystery was engaging and the spark between Noah and Ally is always fun to see.
Tailing Trouble by Laura Scott (Furry Friends Mystery #2) 4 stars
When I got approved for this book, I went and found "Dogged By Death", the first book in the series. I am glad I did because a lot of world building happened in that book and it enhanced the enjoyment of the second book.
Dr. Ally Winter, DVM is still trying to establish her practice. In "Dogged By Death" we find out that she had a thriving practice, but her partner and fiance embezzled all the funds and took off to parts unknown with the cute vet tech. She has returned to the small town of Willow Bluff, Wisconsin to have her own practice and be near her grandfather. Her grandfather lives in a small assisted living home with three widows who are vying for his attention. Unfortunately for Ally, her grandfather has an avid interest in true crime and any current crime in Willow Bluff. In this book, Ally is walking Domino, a black poodle that she is boarding when he finds a shoe that belonged to Pricilla Green who is dead underneath a willow tree. What follows is a humorous mystery that involves Ally and her grandfather insistence on investigating the murder.
The side characters are a fun mix, especially Detective Noah Jorgenson as Ally's potential love interest who is desperately trying to keep Ally and her grandfather from interfering in his investigation. I enjoyed reading this book very much and look forward to the next book in this series.
Thank you Netgalley and Crooked Lane Books for this ARC.
Thank you, Net Galley, Laura Scott and Crooked Lane Books, for the ARC of Tailing Trouble. This is my personal review.
This is the second book in the cozy mystery series Furry Friends Mystery by Laura Scott.
This book was just as good as the first. Ally Winter and Gramps took me on another mystery adventure that kept me guessing what was happening. To me that is the right formula for a cozy.
The characters that are in the story make for great reading. And of course, for me the location of Willow Bluff Wisconsin is the best!
I am looking forward to the next installment in this series.
This is book 2 of a Furry Friends mystery. I highly recommend reading book one first.
I am so happy Ally and the gang are back!! While walking her friends dog, Domino, who she is boarding, the dog gets away from her. He brings Ally back a shoe that leads her to Patricia Greens body. Ally is shocked and quickly calls the police when Detective (and resident hot cop) Noah Jorgenson shows up and is on the case.
Ally wants to let the police handle it but of course Gramps wants to help and the widows just want answers. This book is full of fun characters and I love the storyline!!
I enjoyed this book. I found Gramps to be a little annoying otherwise I liked the characters. The killer was a surprise. #TailingTrouble #NetGalley
Veterinarian Dr. Abby Winter has moved back to her hometown for two reasons: one, to be with her grandfather, who had a hip replacement, and two, because her no-good cheating ex-fiancé stole their joint savings and ran away with their vet tech, leaving her with all the bills. Salvaging just enough to purchase a practice from a retiring vet, she's barely managing to keep her head above water, and is doing everything she can to stay in business.
While visiting her grandfather, she hears an argument between one of the widows at his group home and an employee - a girl who was hired to clean once a week. Abby can't but help notice the girl is wearing polka-dot stilettoes, and finds it odd she would do so. Later on, while walking Domino -- the standard poodle she's boarding -- he gets loose and runs off. When he returns, he drops a shoe exactly like Pricilla's at Abby's feet. Retracing Domino's steps, she finds the other shoe -- still attached to the body of Pricilla. Calling the police, Detective Noah Jorgenson isn't surprised to find her there, but somehow Abby becomes one of the suspects in the murder.
When Gramps learns of this, he thinks there's nothing to but solve the murder himself, figuring Noah needs all the help he can get. Now Abby is stuck between trying to keep Gramps out of it (she can't) trying to keep Noah happy (she can't) and trying to keep Domino and her own Boxer, Roxy, out of destroying her clinic (can she?) That is, unless the killer discovers what Gramps and Abby are up to, then all bets are off...
This is the second book in the Furry Friends Mysteries, and I found it just as delightful as the first. Once again we have the irrepressible and true-crime obsessed Gramps deciding he can do just as good a job as the police, and all Abby can do is stay with him to try and keep him from getting in over his head. But Gramps has no problem walking up to people and asking them about the murder, and Abby is afraid someone is going to take notice -- Noah. Which he does. Repeatedly. Which makes him develop an eye twitch. So the game is on, and all Abby wants to do is take care of her animals.
Never fear, in between crime solving her Gramps allows her to tend to her place of business, which is struggling but managing to stay in the black. But when a couple of burglaries occur and things start escalating, Abby turns to Noah for help, and he does his best to do his job...
The mystery was done very well, and even though I knew who the murderer was some time during the middle of the book (but only because I read a lot of mysteries), it was still intriguing to see how the story played out. There were a couple of subplots that were rather fun, too; and pulled us from one scenario back to the next.
Gramps, of course, was his usual self, thinking he's now better than the police and because he's a vet that he can take care of himself. He has a good sense of humor, and the man is really a hoot, and I love listening to him especially because he has no filter and says exactly what he thinks. It's fun and sometimes embarrassing for Abby, but oh, well...
When we come to the end we have a bit of a gripping climax that was worth the wait, and one can never tell what is exactly in the mind of a murderer. Only that they are unhinged in the first place or they wouldn't be killing people, right? This book is a fun read, a cozy that can be read in one evening (as I did) and I eagerly await the next in the series. Recommended.
Vet Ally Winter, had hoped for a quiet life when she returned to her hometown of Willow Bluff but it hasn't quite worked out like that! Having helped solve a murder earlier in the year she is now trying to concentrate on her fledgling veterinary practice but isn't overrun with clients. Another reason for returning home is to keep an eye on her occasionally grumpy Grandpa, Oscar who now lives in a small communal home after breaking his hip.
After agreeing to board a standard black poodle called Domino over a weekend Ally takes him for a leisurely stroll and to her amazement they discover a dead body and even worse she recognises the victim. Warned off by local detective and old school friend, Noah Jorgensen, Ally is told to keep Oscar out of his way and investigation but she has a feeling that isn't going to happen anytime soon. A true crime lover, Oscar is sure he's just the person to find out what the local residents know ready to pass on to Noah along with his own unique take on the case.
Having enjoyed the first Furry Friends mystery I was looking forward to reading this and it didn't disappoint. Main protagonists Ally, Noah, and Oscar, and the Willow Bay Widows, are joined by new suspects and customers as Ally tries to help and appease everyone. The case is interesting from the start and mixing it with Oscar and the widows' home life makes it entertaining and humorous throughout.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. I really enjoyed this second book in a series which has the potential for lots more adventures to come.
Ally Winter has moved back to her hometown of Willow Bluff to open a veterinary practice. She's got a motley crew of assistants made up of Gramps and the WBWs (Willow Bluff Widows) from the Legacy House. Priscilla Green whirls through Legacy House and raises a ruckus before turning up dead under a willow tree near the lake. Of course Gramps, the true-crime aficionado and would-be detective, is immediately on the case coming up with one theory after another, each more outlandish than the last.
I really enjoy this series. One thing I like about cozies is that although there are murders occurring the stories are mostly very innocent. The people are sweet and even the curmudgeons are generally charming in their own way. There's always an adorable pet, usually a pitiful rescue. The setting is always delightful, whether it's a bucolic, cozy town or a debonair, cultured city. This series embodies all those things, with Gramps shouting into his cell phone, Roxy heeling like a champ, and Willow Bluff providing Ally with everything she needs, just when she needs it. Ally certainly has her challenges in Willow Bluff, but the whole atmosphere is one of innocent comfort (murder notwithstanding). I highly recommend this series to any mystery buff who wants to read something super cozy.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.
I fell for the cover when I applied to read this book on Netgalley. I was so happy I got to read this book because I love it! I love it when elderly play a role in Cozies. This book is the second one in this series and I now MUST read the first book. Our protagonist is veterinarian Ally Winter and she is accompanied by her Gramps who loves a good mystery and is more than eager to help when Ally, or better yet Domino, the dog she has for boarding, finds the body of Pricilla Green. This all much to the annoyance of Willow Bluff's finest--and handsomest--detective, Noah Jorgenson.
I love that the story isn't just about the murder, but we also get to meet some of the animals that visit the veterinary clinic. Only good endings!!! But the murder itself is a good one. You get thrown so many clues that you finally think you know who did it, only to find it..... they are not the murderer. I haven't read the first book yet, which I will, as I want to know more about the Widows that gramps live with. They seem like a bunch of nice ladies and I hope book one will give a bit more info on that.
I also loved the characters. They are all very sweet and loveable. But I really like Gramps! He is a hand full, pries into everything to find clues and has a theory about everything. And.... he is usually right!
The only fault I found, and I hope that will be corrected in the final version, is in Chapter Six right at the beginning there is a line "Marlie is such a sweet girl" Darlene said. But I think Darlene has to be Beverley as Gramps and Ally are talking to Beverly about Marlie, Darlene and Fred.
Other than that I really loved this book and I hope more will follow!
Tailing Trouble is another addition to this series. It revolves around a veterinarian, her grandfather, and some other colorful characters. This is your typical cozy mystery, however, there seems to be a bit too much repeated mentions, which becomes irritating after a while.
Ally has the patience of a saint! I enjoyed book one and I continue to enjoy book two; this was so much fun. The mystery was engrossing and everything else was still amusing. I loved getting to know all the characters better and this time the murder wasn’t quite as easy to figure out. Lots of solid red herrings before the detective figures it out.
Thank you #Netgalley for the advance reader copy of Tailing Trouble by Laura Scott in exchange for an honest review. Ally Winter is a veterinarian who has moved back to her hometown of Willow Bluff, Wisconsin. Ally's grandfather broke his hip, so she had to come to help him. He also likes to solve crimes. Furry Friends Veterinary Clinic seems to be having a rocky start. A lady brought a dog who had eaten two bags of chocolate chips, so Ally had to give it charcoal to clean out the chocolate. During a dog walking session, she comes across a dead body of a young woman. This was an interesting and fun book.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing the ARC.
The book is nice and has all the marks of a typical cozy mystery. It contains one of my pet peeves i.e. more than one murder. I like my cozy mysteries to have one murder per story. More than one just curtails the enjoyment of mystery for me. I was entertained by the dogs and I loved the grandfather.
Dr. Ally Winter has recently returned to her small hometown of Willow Bluff, Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan. Her significant other has stolen all the money from her veterinary practice and run off with one of her employees, plus her veteran grandpa, Oscar is recovering from hip surgery and her reconnecting with detective Noah Jorgenson is at a standstill. Then as she is walking her current boarder dog, Domino he gets away from her and discovers a body. Now Oscar is recovering at Legacy House with three widows but is not recuperating with patience and decides to help solve the case like he had in the debut of the series. This puts Ally into risky situations and also at odds with Noah. There are some appealing characters and dogs in this second book in the series, but I was surprised that Oscar would continue to put his granddaughter in a dangerous situation. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for a honest review.
Ally and Grandpa are back solving a mystery, running a veterinary practice and keeping out of trouble! This case finds them working to solve the case of a young woman, Priscilla Green, who was murdered and discovered by Ally, while out walking one of her canine patients. So many people disliked Priscilla and now the murderer may have the veterinarian and her beloved Grandpa in their sights!
I enjoy this series and like that Ally is a veterinarian. Her career brings many interesting animals and their owners to the story. Ally is a likable character who has the patience of a saint with her crime show addict grandfather who is determined to solve the mystery before Ally's sorta boyfriend and police officer, Noah. Grandpa is a fun character but unintentionally gets Ally into dangerous situations. Domino, the rogue but lovable poodle and Roxy, Ally's boxer, bring humor to the story. I love the WBW's and their pursuit of Grandpa.
A fun mystery that I enjoyed!
I received an ARC from NetGalle y and the opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I recently read the first book in this series and started this one as soon it was over.
It's another highly entertaining and gripping story. I had a lot of fun, read it as fast as I could and was kept guessing.
I like the idea of different dogs that help Ally to investigate.
Likeable characters, solid mystery.
Can't wait to read the next story.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

She's a veterinarian with a dog of her own, an exasperating grandpa, a hope to go on a date with the local police chief, and a habit of finding murdered bodies. She acquires her friend's standard sized poodle (ostensibly) for a few days, but it all goes to dog fur from there on.
The publisher's blurb is a good hook (despite having no clue about the size of a standard poodle), and spoilers won't do, so I'll just say that I absolutely LOVED it!
Can't call this an unbiased review because I also loved the last book, too, but I do think that it works as a stand alone.
I requested and received a free temporary ebook copy from Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley. Thank you!
Love this series and author. I couldn't put this book down. If you haven't read this series yet I highly recommend doing so. I just discovered this author. I enjoy her books.
