Some moments in your life are defined by the smallest of biggest things. This book is one of them.
I will admit, I am a longtime Dave Hollis fan. He is a fantastic teacher, coach, and human. This book lays all of those things out on the page like a beating heart.
Built Through Courage is a book that everyone can get something out of. Courage isn't always easy, and sometimes, even if you're brave, the Courage to continue is brutal.
Hollis’ sophomore writing follows his Get Out of Your Own Way, with the stories of how he pushed through adversity and heartache and attempted to better himself.
The chapters are short and easy to read. The advice is expected but chalked rich with experiences that are relatable. There are a few cringe worthy tales but those are helpful and connect to those trying to put their past behind them and navigate difficult times. At times, it feels like the experiences (divorce, shame, single parenting) the author is describing are larger than they need to be but happy he was navigate through and share with others.
Dave Hollis’s Built Through Courage is about overcoming the hard seasons of your life and being able to acknowledge the good that can come from those tough times. Overall, I enjoyed the nautical theme and the many amazing quotes that tie into it. The illustrations and journal activities are a pleasant break from the text and allow the reader to reflect on the topics of each chapter in different ways.
I personally feel readers who are in the midst of their hard times or just starting their reflection journey will benefit most from Dave’s story. Those who have read self help books before may find the message repetitive, but that doesn’t mean the book itself isn’t worth reading. As it goes with many self help books timing can play a big part in what you take away from the text.
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review this book!
I looked forward to reading this book. I appreciate the nuggets of info I took away from reading and seeing a different perspective.
Wonderful book to help those of us experiencing fear in taking the next big leap. Dave puts the thoughts on paper that so many of us experience and think daily. Wonderful book with lots of tactical and practical tips on how to be courageous in stepping out and doing the next thing we are called to do in life. Highly recommend.
Eh. This book had a very similar message to his first book. It was a lot of ‘move your body’ ‘you can do it’ etc. I didn’t feel like I learned anything new. I felt annoyed as I was reading. He never acknowledged his privilege.
Beautiful use of the boat metaphor to help folks understand how to chart a course of their life that matters to them.
The journaling activities throughout the book are very helpful. I will be going back through the book slower and revisiting the journaling prompts to dig in deeper.
I was a fan of the author when he and his ex-wife were together. I believe 100% of all their advice. But after the breakups and the breakdowns. And more recently the instagram live where he shamed all his fans and his child, I can't in good faith read or follow his advice.
Dave Hollis is courageous in so many ways. And his gives readers to how-to roadmap to overcome the negative self-talk and get to work anyway.
He has had tons of success and some very public failures. And in this book, he shares the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Bravo to him for being vulnerable and writing both a memoir post-divorce and a kick-in-the-pants self-help boom. It's quite good!
Special thanks to the publisher for an advanced copy via the NetGalley app.
Reeks of privilege. I couldn’t finish it. Got really whiny in parts too. I tried. I would put it down for a few days and try again. White privilege and male privilege is rampant in the book
I think that this book had a lot of really great advice about living your best life and overcoming fear. It did feel a bit too long at times though. I think that it could have been a much more condensed version for greater impact. I would recommend people read it.
Dave speaks to the heart in his new book Built Through Courage. In this book are the tools to become a better version of yourself.
I used to follow Dave for a while and so I feel like between following him and listening to podcasts he’s been on, livestreams, etc., that I’ve heard many of the things written in this book. I am a bit disappointed that it’s all very surface level and things that have been regurgitated time and time again.
I’ve been a fan of Dave since I started following his ex-wife, Rachel, a few years ago. I really enjoyed his first book, so was excited for this one.
This book tells stories from his life in a conversational manner to help readers overcome fears or hard times in life. Each chapter ends with a journal prompt, which is a great way to unpack and use the tools he gives in your own life!
I do understand this book won’t be for everyone, but I liked it!
I love the conversational style of this book. It feels like your friend is sharing vulnerable parts of their life and offers you perspectives on how you too can make it through the hard things.
I'm a fan of most things Hollis, and this book doesn't disappoint. If you are someone who follows Dave on social media, chances are you've already read/heard many of the stories shared in this book, but not in this particular way. He does a wonderful job of outlining different hurdles that many of us have to trying something new, and offers logbook, or journaling activities at the end of each chapter to allow for and encourage intentional reflection.
I had read Dave’s previous book and had a pretty good idea what I was getting myself into with this one.
This book is filled with the same recycled, regurgitated self-help information you will hear from any of the big names in the business – the self-help business. Dave is very vocal about who is he “inspired” by and you will definitely hear their words coming through Dave’s writing.
Very similar to his wife’s work, Dave has a talent for repackaging other peoples’ work into his own.

Would I Recommend? No
Dave has poured his heart into this book and is passionate about wanting us all to go after our dreams, even if it takes courage and discomfort. The journaling prompts at the end of each chapter are great food for thought.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
