OMG. I wouldn't say I loved this audiobook, but I at least made it all the way through. Trejo is a fascinating character who has lived a troubling and inspiring life. Glad I didn't give up on it.
Danny Trejo has made a name for himself as both Machete and as a villain frequent killed in films in more and stranger violent ways. He recently featured in the last season of American Gods, and is beloved in Los Angeles for his restaurants and giving back to his community. There's another side to Danny Trejo, and he wants to share his painful history with the world. The new autobiography Trejo looks at his life from an abusive home, through heroin addiction, prison, and finally ending up in films as the bad guy.
Trejo does not shy away from the bad things Danny Trejo has done. He is upfront about his treatment of the women in his life, how his drug addiction ruined his life, and his time as a violent offender in prison. Some of the magic of this book shows how he has tried to make amends. He discussed his work with recovery and getting those who suffer from addiction into treatment programs. He talks about how he started his restaurants to give back to his community and honor his mother.
Trejo is an extremely powerful book. The audiobook is narrated by Trejo himself, and makes it all that much better.
