Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.
Sensationally good
The aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln is carrying 6,000 personnel on board and one of them is killing their fellow shipmates. The question is, who and why...? Finn is a Navy SEAL who is getting a ride back to the US following a a failed mission, he finds himself in a race against time to catch a killer. Great well-plotted thriller.
When you see a book and it’s synopsis is “there’s a serial killer on a naval aircraft carrier” this gets you hooked quite quickly. The authors are a great team, the knowledge and experience of a former Navy SEAL and a thriller writer give great insight into the workings of an aircraft carrier. This authenticity allows the reader to visualise and understand the “politics” that are in place on board.
Throw into the fact there is a serial killer running round this ship, and the plot draws you in. There are a number of red herrings the reader thinks they can follow to determine who is the killer, but it is only when they reveal themselves that we have any idea. This makes for great reading, with numerous characters built up as they engage with the crew.
The book has elements of early Tom Clancy and Stephen Coonts, with a dash of PJ Tracy, with the nautical thriller aspects and the serial killer thriller elements respectively.
If you are a fan of any of these authors, or the description intrigues you, please pick a copy of the book up, as I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I was provided a free ARC of the book from NetGalley and the publisher in return for my honest review.
High Octane Thrills…
There’s a murderer in their midst in this tense, atmospheric and fast moving action thriller with an enigmatic anti-hero and a well drawn cast of characters. High octane thrills.
What a lovely gem of a book to read, I do enjoy military books as well as thrillers, so mix them up and we get Steel Fear (not so sure on the title though) but a cracking story that kept me captive; the claustrophobic feel of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and the 20 miles of corridors. The two authors bring an expertise that's brings an authenticity to the book. I don't remember reading a thriller quite like this a very different combination of ideas that mix well. This is listed as book 1 so do we have a book 2 in the future, I hope we do as our hero hasn't cleared his name yet.
Thank you Netgalley for this e book and to the publishers Canelo.
Wow, what a fabulous book. It’s always exciting to find new Authors that can grab your attention, with a thoroughly well written and entertaining story. Brandon Webb and John David Mann have done a great job with not only a tense and interesting plot, but a wonderful array of characters. Finn is definitely memorable, and I would love to read about him in the future.
It had been a while since Chief Finn had been on an Air Craft Carrier. Being a Navy Seal in the last few years meant he spent most of his time in war zones in the Middle East. The USS Kitty Hawk was the last time he was aboard a carrier, and back then he had been a Sonar Operator. The USS Abraham Lincoln certainly had a different feel to it. Moral was certainly low, and maybe being at sea for the past eight months had something to do with it, however Finn thought there was more to it than that. The crew were certainly wondering why a Navy Seal spent a great deal of time walking the decks and passage ways.
This is an amazing book and I would highly recommend it. 5/5 Star Rating.
