A wonderful introduction to the esoteric. The layout of the book into 4 sections (Land, Lineage, Community and Self) provide ample opportunity to explore and work on different areas of personal development and spirituality. The author writes in a voice that is kindly and calmly insightful, like a wise aunt. The illustrations really make the book for me. They perfectly capture the mood of the book and are charmingly whimsical.
Although this title wouldn't widely appeal to most of my library patrons, I cannot wait to have a personal copy and gift it to like-minded friends. It was beautifully illustrated and had compelling reasons for every suggestion. It's important to balance various areas of our lives and this title gives concrete suggestions for doing so with meaning and purpose.
As a fan of Becca's podcast, I was so excited to read her book and Root and Ritual was everything I hoped. First, the book is absolutely beautiful. The text has such a wonderful, welcoming tone that encourages the reader to try and learn new things even if they think they might fail on the first try. The book offers so many simple ways to connect with a simpler more intentional way of life. There are recipes, techniques, and other projects that will appeal to readers from a wide variety of spiritual backgrounds and none as they try to cultivate a greater sense of belonging to themselves, their lineages, nature, and their homes.
Root and Ritual is a great little introductory book on how to connect back to yourself and nature. This book was great for the practice of grounding (recentering and bringing yourself back down to Earth.) Filled with guides to make your own rituals, recipes, and crafts this book has a little something for everyone. I think this is great for anyone that wants to dip their toes into the vaguely spiritual. Also I was so happy that a book of this nature is finally starting to be intersectional, culturally aware, and over all inclusive.
I like this book but also i found it was lacking in ways to explore lineage. Like if you don't want to explore your biological lineage, there are no real tips on finding community and paying hommage ti ancestors. I would have liked tips on how to find these ancestors, how to look for them.
What I liked was the themes of connecting to the self to find community as well as connecting to the land and people. It was interesting and I also liked the tips, I took notes :)
This book, while addressing how we’ve become disconnected in the modern world, is even more relevant during the pandemic where we have been forced to spend more time at home and alone. It is a great read for anyone who feels like they’re on their own. Broken into four parts, you will learn to connected in meaningful ways to yourself, your past, your community and the land.
Well written, this book is food for the soul.
A beautiful book divided into four sections covering a return to the land, lineage, community + self
Becca’s book feels like a deep nourishing breath in a noisy world.
Gorgeously illustrated and with ritual invitations along the way I’m excited to gift this to friends to help them return to their longing.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.
I enjoyed this book. It provided a gentle reminder to slow down and reconnect with nature.
Land. Lineage Community and Self.
The Author provided an array of options to explore nature and its abundance, such as crafts, recipes, journalling, exploring past 'harms', creating a community and the benefits of trusting your intuition, which fuels a sense of empowerment.
I particularly enjoyed the Author's use of folklore and ritual, particularly in dealing with grief. The Author offered suggestions on Honor Rites of Passage, Honoring the Life/Death Cycle, Death Blessing Ceremony, Honoring Death. Grief is so difficult, and I thought her suggestions, offered a way to process feelings with a 'hands on approach' exploring rituals and a nature memorial.
Thank you NetGalley and Sounds True Publisher for the opportunity to read and review this wonderful book.

I loved how the author made sure that this books brings us to our roots and sisterhood. As mentioned in the book, we are currently overly anxious and too much into technology. This books shows us importance of our community and people.
Not only that, it is also about how we should re-connect to our ancestors and make sure to learn about it as much as possible. A lot of us don't know where we are from and with migration, it has become harder to track your ancestors but it is important for everyone to know about our lineage.
Amazing book, especially for us women!
What a gorgeous book! The tone is very welcoming and warm, which makes it pleasurable to read. Stunning cover with equally gorgeous illustrations inside. If I saw this sitting on the shelf at my local bookstore - I'd buy it!
This book hit at just the right time. It's a special reminder to make time for and connect to each other and to nature to ground yourself.
The description provided here on Net Galley uses gender-neutral language in its text, however this book is decidedly written for women (not just cis-women, though, which I appreciate). The back cover of the book does use gendered language though, so I give it a pass on this point. (But it was quite shocking to be reading along and realize that this book was not at all written for me.)
All that to say, this is a remarkable piece of work. The artwork throughout is beautifully rendered with bright jewel tones. There's sensitivity to aspects of all life, giving space for those who have difficulty connecting with certain ancestors, allowing for parenthood to be more than just the birth of a child, recognizing that some women do not menstruate, respecting practices that are from a culture that is not yours.... it was all so respectful of different life paths, and I loved that.
And, despite it not really being written for me, it's still got lots of information that is useful to everyone, female or not.
I will start with my positive opinions on this book. The cover is gorgeous and caught my attention right away. The images inside the book are also gorgeous and colorful. There are some recipes inside the book, some are for food and others are for water and body oil. I truly appreciated the instructions to make flower water. Last but not least, the info is concise and to the point. The book is definitely what the name says, it's for connecting to your roots/ancestors (through food, land, and practices) and rituals (using plants, foods, etc). Now to what I did not like about the book, even though some information is nice, other is common sense and easily found with a google search. The book also has chapters on self-love/accepting your body and community/making friendships and even though I do appreciate these chapters, I wish they were shorter and that the book focused more on connecting with your ancestors.
Root and ritual by Becca Piastrelli is an interesting book for anyone looking into connecting back to their ancestral and nature roots. This book is a different kind of magical book as it does not contain spells or rituals in the normal sense but encourages the reader to make their own rituals in life. It is a good book to read if you want to work on yourself and create your own family traditions.
A beautifully illustrated guide on how to connect fully to yourself, your ancestral roots, your community and to the earth as a whole. It is full of basic rituals to aid you in your journey.
The last 18 months has brought awareness to most of us that we need the natural world to feel grounded, healthy and sane. The author looks at how we have become so disconnected from the natural world, how it has cost us and the environment and how to get back to what our ancestors knew – we need nature. Using folklore, exercises, crafts and recipes, readers will find a way to reconnect with the natural world. Piastrelli’s genuine love of the wild sings through loud, clear and true in this lovely book
