Thank you for my early review copy. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I believe this book will be a huge bestseller.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for providing an early copy of Three Sisters in exchange for my honest review.
Three Sisters tells the story of three sisters from Slovakia who make a promise to their father that they will always stick together, no matter what. When the Hlinka guards tear apart the family by forcing sisters Cibi and Livi on a train to Auschwitz, the sisters do whatever it takes to be together and survive together.
I really appreciate that this is a story around real sisters who told the author their story. In their letters provided at the end of the novel, they really seem to have a great connection to Morris and I'm happy for them. There were some emotional scenes, as one would expect in a novel set during the Holocaust. I also appreciated the in depth look at survivor's guilt and how it weighed heavily on the characters.
Unfortunately, I don't click with Morris's writing style. I wish she spent more time on the historical parts (who were the Hlinka guards, how did they come into power, why was Israel such a political issue post WW2) rather than assuming the reader knew the implications of the actions. I also took issue with how she romanticized the time spent in Auschwitz with the girls being practically chummy with a guard who ended up going to trial and being executed for her war crimes. The stakes felt so low with this character who was a criminal in real life. While the time spent in Israel was interesting, it didn't hold my attention. It felt more like a diary of everyday life but again, there were no high stakes so it was boring. I would recommend this novel to Morris fans, and those who want a "light" Holocaust read. Sometimes "Night" is just too much to take in.
Heather morris’ latest book doesn’t disappoint- I think anyone who liked Tattoist of Auschwitz and Cillka’s Journey will enjoy her latest effort, about 3 sisters who all survived the Holocaust. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy in exchange for review.
4.5/5
Excellent addition to the Tattooist of Auschwitz series! I finished this one in two days because I could not put it down. The story of the three girls (Cibi, Magda, and Livi) is based on true events and ties in with the first two books. Highly recommend even if you haven't read the first two - you will still be able to enjoy the story but I would recommend reading all three if you wish.
This book is a historical fiction novel about three sisters that find themselves in Auschwitz-Birkenau. The story centers around their lives and what they went through before, during, and after their horrendous time in the concentration camps.
This book was amazingly told. It was full of unimaginable sadness and horrors that these poor people had to endure as prisoners. I loved that she told the story of the sisters after they left the camps. How they lived and what their lives were like.
As a lover of World War II historical fiction, I would highly recommend this book along with Heather Morris' other books about the lives of the prisoners of Auschwitz. This book was captivating and emotional. I could not put it down.
I requested and received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. This is my review.
The book is a story of three sisters who are Jewish during WWII. The story tells mostly of their lives while spending time in one of the most horrific German death camps, Auschwitz. It doesn't sugar-coat their lives but I'm sure it was worse than told.
This tells some of what they went through, how they escaped, and then their new lives in Israel. It is a biography of these sisters who are very tightly knit together and how they kept their promise to their father to stay together. It shows how some kept their faith and how others lost theirs. It is a story of three very strong women.
I truly enjoyed the way the story was told, the information that is first-hand of survivors. I also enjoyed the posts at the end of the book by the children of these three sisters.
If you enjoy historical stories you will enjoy this one of how three sisters triumphed over tragedy.

As with all of Heather Morris’ books in this fine series, she has put heart, soul and compassion into this heartbreaking yet inspiring tale of survival and what it truly means to be family even in the worst of times. Morris brings the three sisters to life and I was beyond moved by their love, humanity and instinct to survive at all costs as long as they had each other. Morris’ extraordinary amount of research combined with her stellar storytelling ability make this an absolute must-read for book clubs and fans of historical fiction.
Many thanks to Netgalley, St. Martin’s Press and Heather Morris for my complimentary e-copy ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review.
Expected publication date: October 5, 2021
Heather Morris brings us “Three Sisters”, the third in the World War Two historical fiction-based-on-real-characters series of novels. A huge fan of Morris’ extremely successful “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” and “Cilka’s Journey”, I was beyond excited to get a chance to read her newest story, and I was not disappointed.
As children, Cibi, Magda and Livi make promises to each other and to their father, to protect and look out for one another. When World War Two decimates their town, their bond is challenged when Cibi and Livi are collected from their home by the Germans and sent to Auschwitz. Left behind due to illness, Magda is left to recover on her own, breaking the promise she made to her deceased father, and spending her days in constant worry of her sisters’ fates. Not long after, Magda is also captured and she reunites with her sisters where their promise is rekindled- they will protect and look out for each other, no matter what.
Morris brings human emotion to the forefront of her novels, rich with character development and historical accuracy. In “Sisters”, like her other novels before, there is some basis in reality. In this case, Morris’ real-life conversations with the living sisters, and their descendants added the purest, rawest emotions and heartbreaking reality to the plot.
“Three Sisters” examines family and sisterhood when it is faced with the cruelest of human depravity and the coldest, harshest environments. Through it all the sisters never broke their bond to their deceased father, and managed to come out the other side. All three sisters are equally likable and they immediately become a trio to root for.
It is not necessary to read the other two novels in this series, as “Sisters” will shine as a stand-alone novel (as will the other two), but I highly recommend both “Tattooist” and “Journey” all the same. Morris gives nods to some of the characters from the other two novels in “Sisters”, and I loved being reunited with them!
“Sisters” left an imprint on my soul, and Morris’ creative writing style, powerfully descriptive settings and brave, relatable characters combine to make one heck of an emotionally engaging read.
A completely inspirational and memorable book! The hardships that these three young ladies endured during their imprisonment in a concentration camp was truly heartbreaking. This is definitely a must read book for 2021!
Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
So beautifully told, heart breaking and inspiring, Three Sisters is a story that will capture your heart and stay with you long after the book is over.
Inspired by three very real characters in a tremulous time in all the world's history, this is one story that should never be forgotten.
The sisters promised their father that they would always stay together, but can that happen when WWII begins and one of the sisters is summoned by the Germans?
Livi is ordered to report to the train station and to Auschwitz. Her sister Cibi can’t let her go alone so she reports too.
Their sister Magda was in the hospital so at this time was not required to report. She does have to hide, but to no avail. Magda is sent to the camp too a few years later.
The two sisters endure the horrors and hardships of the camp together and welcome their sister even though it isn't a pleasant reunion.
All three do not leave each other’s side and endure together.
As the war ends and the prisoners are on a march, the sisters and other women run and escape.
Heartwrenching, heartbreaking, and well written with hope being what gets them through it all.
We then follow the sisters as they leave their country for Israel but never have the horror of their concentration camp ordeals out of their minds.
This is a true story told to Heather Morris by two of the three sisters who are still living in Israel with their extended family.
The acknowledgements by the children will bring tears to your eyes.
Another well-done, well-researched book by Ms. Morris. 5/5
This book was given to me by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I appreciate #NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review Three Sisters by Heather Morris. I've already read The Tattooist of Auschwitz and Cilka's Journey and couldn't wait to read this one. Three sisters make a promise to their father as small children. They promise that they will take care of one another. Years after his death, two of the sisters find themselves transported to Auschwitz. They face the betrayal of their neighbors and unspeakable treatment in the camps. The girls use their wits and commitment to each other to survive. Eventually the third sister, their mother, and grandfather are also sent to the camps and the tragedy continues. The story was so heart-wrenching that I couldn't put it down.
I was given the chance to read this book on Netgalley. Everytime I read a book about the imprisonment of Jews it breaks my heart reading about what happened to them. What I loved about this book was how they told how their life was afterwards. One of the best books I have read.
Simply put, this is a very good book, written by a very good author. In “Three Sisters” Heather Morris captures the horrors of the Holocaust along with the humanity and resilience, hopes and fears, and steadfast love of three young sisters who are just trying their hardest to survive. While this book is a standalone tale of the German atrocities, it is also a great follow up to “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” and “Cilka’s Journey”. I would highly recommend reading all three of these great books. Thank you NetGalley for the advance read copy.
When they were little girls, the youngest not even aware of the magnitude of two little words, three sisters…Cibi, Magda and Livi….make a promise to their father to always stay together, to always look out for each other. That promise is what kept them going, even when histories darkest hour took them to hell on earth…Auschwitz. In their homeland of Slovakia, it was the youngest Liv who was the first ordered away from their home and family for simply being Jewish. Cibi refused to let her little sister go into the unknown alone and true to her promise of always staying together, went with her. Together, day by day, they survived illness, beatings and worst of all selections at Auschwitz. When things got worse day by day, their will to stay together is what kept them going. Magda managed to evade the early transport by being hidden in the hospital by a kind doctor. She managed to evade transport for two years before finally being caught and finding herself in Auschwitz too. Little did she know, she was to be reunited with her sisters and together they fight to survive.
This book is fantastic. It’s heartbreaking but filled with strength, hope and a promise three little girls made to their father. Based on a true story and with the blessing and guidance of the two remaining sisters and their families, Heather Morris brings the story of the Meller sisters to life. The compassion with which this story was written shines through on everything page. It’s grabs a hold of you and doesn’t let go until you finish the last sentence. I highly recommend. This is the third book by Morris and I admit I have not yet read the other two but they’re are linked together by common characters but I didn’t get the feeling I needed to read them in order as they are completely different stories. Please don’t close the book when you finish the last sentence, read Livi’s comments and those of her family. They are very proud of their story and the way it was told.
Thanks so much to NetGalley, St Martins Press and most importantly to Heather Morris who’s compassion and talent for storytelling introduced me to the Meller sisters and their strength to survive.
I was so excited to receive this book from Netgalley. And it did not disappoint! This is a 3rd book from Heather Morris. It touches on the Tattooist of Auschwitz, as well as those in Cilka’s Journey. You do not need to read these books in order- for they are each a stand alone book. This book follows the lives of Cibi, Livi and Magda in Auschwitz. Their love for each other, along with the promise they made to their father years earlier is what keeps them alive. This is a story of love, perseverance and survival.
This was a powerful story about three sisters and their lives before, during, and after being held in Auschwitz-Berkenau during WWII. Morris once again has found a way to take the story of real people who went through unfathomable difficulties while still showing the hope, resilience, and victory over their oppressors. Most WWII Holocaust-related stories stop with the main characters being liberated, but I liked how this showed their lives after as well.
Heather Morris is quickly becoming one of my favourite historical fiction writers. This is another amazing story of survivors and everything they lived thru at the concentration camps. What it makes this book different is that half the book is AFTER the war is finally over. It exposes you to the guilt some survivors experienced for simply surviving or not having suffered as much as others. It also depicts how difficult life was even after the war was over. This is definitely a great book to read by any historical fiction lover. I would strongly recommend reading the letters by Livi and some family members at the end of the novel. It gives you a glimpse of how the book came about and the extensive research that went into portraying this book as close to history as possible.
An amazing story, well done Heather Morris!
Thanks St. Martin's Press, Heather Morris, and NetGalley for this ARC
Heather Morris has written another amazing story about the horrors that took place during WWII. Based on a true story, three sisters make a promise to each other and their father when they are very young to always look after each other. This story tells about their courage, bravery and spirit as they fight to keep their promise.
It’s hard for me to summarize how this book made me feel. It was so beautiful and powerful and important. My heart aches for the sisters, but also the millions of others that were tortured and murdered. Like the girls, I believe these stories need to be shared over and over and over. I loved hearing about Israel and how amazing it was to have a safe homeland to escape to. Lest we forget….may their memory be a blessing.
