Obviously I knew this would be a difficult read, and it was. Fascinating, of course. I did feel like the last third of the book really slowed down, and didn't hold my interest as much. I feel bad saying anything negative about a book with this content. Heartbreaking.
What can I say that others have already said probably more eloquently. There is no point in retelling the story in my review, it's been done. I will say this was one of the saddest books I have read. I can say it was filled wit hope, filled with love and heartbreaking from beginning to end. But most of all I can say it was so very, very human...filled with love of family, filled with hope of a future under such horrific circumstances. Stories such as this should always remain, we must never forget man's inhumanity to man, to such evil...we must always remember, it could happen again and somewhere it probably is! My thanks to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I received a complimentary Kindle book from Net Galley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you to Heather Morris, Zaffre, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
The Three Sisters is the third and final book in The Tattooist of Auschwitz series. For me, this was the most difficult of the three books to read. It took me a great deal of time to start the book and I read it very slowly.
The book was horrifying as it was so realistic. All of my senses were involved in my reading of the book which made it so much harder. This was an important, yet difficult to read. Additionally, I feel that the author wrote better and better stories as the trilogy continued.
RECOMMEND - please read the first two book in the trilogy first.
I received an ARC of Three Sisters in exchange for an honest review.
This is a beautifully written story of hope, bravery. love and endurance. At the beginning of the story, we are introduced to 3 young girls - Cibi, Magda and Livi. It is on the eve of their father's surgery that he asks them to make a pact to always take care of each other and all 3 girls commit. However, none of them really understood how challenging and difficult it will be to keep that commitment.
Fast forward a few years to WWII and Livi is forced into a concentration camp and Cibi joins her to protect and keep Livi safe. Together the two girls face horrible conditions and situations where every day their life is in jeopardy. Madga, due to other circumstances, is in hiding the first few years her sisters are in the concentration camp but does eventually join them. Throughout their time together in the concentration camps, we watch them be exposed to horrific situations and having to make such difficult choices to just survive. No matter what happens, each of the 3 girls is driven by their commitment to each other - even when giving up or death feels like a more appropriate option.
The three girls are not perfect and they face their own demons and challenges but there is such an overall strength and commitment to each other. Their story also instills hope that with the right people by your side, you can survive the most difficult situations.
This book tells the true story of three Jewish sisters born and raised in Slovakia. Prior to the death of their father they make a promise to him to always love and protect one another. The promise is a challenging one as the sisters are taken into concentration camps and forced to face the horror and inhumane treatment of Jewish people during WW2. During the time spent in Auschwitz and Birkenau, they see the arrival of hundreds of trains carrying unsuspecting families and witness the selection process of who lives or is sent to the gas chambers. The sisters battle typhus, witness beatings and torture of fellow prisoners at the whims of the Nazis. They have little clothing and face starvation and endure freezing winters as the years drag on and the war continues. Their story does not end when the war ends. Each sister carries the burden of the camps war in a different way but as difficult as their memories are they shared their experience with their spouses and growing families. The book concludes with words from several of the three sisters’s children and grandchildren. It is uplifting to know that these strong and determined women upheld their promises and shared their story so that no one should ever forget the atrocities done by humans at the expense of others.
This is the first of Heather Morris's books that I have read and did not realize it was part of a trilogy. My lack of reading books one and two did not distract from the story as this could be read by itself. This is the story of Cibi, Magda and Livi three sisters who defied the odds and kept a promise made to their father when very young. The book is a Holocaust book which makes it very emotional for the reader. The book is divided into distinct time intervals, before the war, during, after and present day. The reader is taken on a journey that sees these girls separated, reunited and their lives remade after the destruction of world war II. I am a visual reader and this book did a wonderful job with descriptions. The story was well developed and the horrors of concentration camps were given without expounding on them and lengthening the book. This is a book about survival and survivor's guilt. Morris did a wonderful job and I now want to read the first two books of the series. I would recommend this book for people who love historical fiction or those who have an interest in World War II literature.
I am just loving all the books by Heather Morris. This one about 3 sisters in Aushwitz was a very difficult read, but I had prepared myself for it before I started and that made it easier. I was especially interested to learn about their experience post war, as many holocaust stories finish at the end of the war. I feel like half of survivor's stories is rebuilding their lives after and this novel went into great depth on it.
I will be recommending this to my historical fiction friends and especially those who have enjoyed the other novels by Heather Morris! Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced copy!
As a fan of WWII novels, Three Sisters by Heather Morris, reveals how a family can face so many obstacles and still survive. Upon their mother's death, a father makes the daughters promise to always take care of each other. Two daughters are separated from the family due to a round up of Jews in a town in Slovakia, the safety of the third is because she is hospitalized by a Christian doctor. After two years they are reunited at a concentration camp. After surviving their ordeal by escaping, they decide to make a new life in the Promise Land. Two sisters depart for Israel with the third sister and her family promising to join them. The book explains the sister's lives and how they continue to honor their father's promise. Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read Three Sisters by Heather Morris before its publication
I received a DIGITAL Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Three sisters is a beautifully written book by Heather Morris. She does a wonderful job of displaying the love between 3 sisters under the most difficult circumstances and hardship during the Holocaust. Based on real events, this book will keep you reading til the wee hours of the morning to find out the fates of the siblings . I enjoyed reading this book, as well as the author's previous books, The Tattooist of Auschwitz, and Cilka's Journey. I look forward to more books by Heather Morris! 5 Stars!!
Another round of applause goes to Heather Morris for Three Sisters! After reading The Tattooist of Auschwitz and Cilka’s Journey, I was, once again, blown away by the true story of the sisters who survived the Holocaust after a promise that they had made to their father years before. Magda, Cibi, and Livi’s heartfelt journey pulls at every emotion as the author describes details of their inseparable sisterhood as they endured such painful hardships during those tragic times. You could feel the pain, the joy, the resilience, and the love that they each experienced thanks to Heather Morris’ writing. This is certainly a must read for any historical fiction lover!
I really had to plough my way through this book and skimmed a lot . The commitment and love these three sisters displayed was aspiring but their hardships seemed not as harsh as other survivors I have read about. It was almost hard to believe the three of them survived and that Magda actually found them. Their story is so important to them and their families but it just was a meh read for me.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for a copy of "Three Sisters" in exchange for my honest review.
After reading "The Tattooist of Auschwitz" by Ms. Morris, I was looking forward to reading this new book in the series. Ms. Morris brought to life the true story of sisters Cibi, Magda and Livi Meller - the reader will cry through parts of the book and smile with joy through other parts.
Their story begins in Slovakia in June 1929 when Cibi (7), Magda (5), and Livi (3) promise their father Menachem that they will always be there for each other, that they are stronger together. This promise will link them together for the rest of their lives, it's this promise that helps them survive and to be strong.
In March 1942 when the girls are 19, 17 and 15 - word comes that girls 16 years old and up are being taken away to work. A kind doctor 'hides' Magda in plain sight at the hospital stating that she has a fever that needs treatment. Cibi was away in the forest preparing to be self-sufficient in the hopes of building a Jewish homeland. Livi they are positive is too young to be taken away. When Livi's name appears on a list Cibi insists on going with her sister because they made the promise to their father and she needs to protect her younger sister.
The sisters end up in Auschwitz and later Birkenau. They fight to be together, to be on the same work details. After the girls have been in the camps for years, they see their sister Magda and the girls are reunited. Their mother and grandfather also arrived with Magda but they are not sure of where they were sent.
There are some characters that readers of the previous book will recognize. Lale Sokolov - the tattooist plays a part in saving Magda. His wife Gita and interpreter Mala.
The story also tells what happened to the girls after the Death March and the liberation of the camps. The book ends with contributions from some of the people in the book which are moving to read.
There is a major inaccuracy in the book. The paragraph that reads "Cibi and Livi had spent enough time watching the Russians construct Birkenau."
This is one of my favorite genres to read, and I've enjoyed other books by this author. The sister angle is not one I've generally come across in the past, so that was a nice take on things. This author uses less emotion-evoking descriptions than some others in this genre, and some parts of the story dragged a bit. In general, this is not a book for someone looking for a light read.
Three Sisters by Heather Morris is another look at the Holocaust, from the POV of three sisters who were taken to Auschwitz/Birkenau prisons and managed to survive there for years. From a young age, Cibi, Livi and Magda promised their father they would take care of each other and when Cibi and Livi wound up at Auschwitz, they did just that. When Magda arrived there two years later, they all watched over each other, even as the watched the atrocities happening all around them. How they managed to survive the brutality and go on to live happy, productive lives and move on to help with the beginnnings of Israel after the war are a testament to the strength of these sisters and their promise to their father and each other. These women are inspiring and there can never be enough light shed on what was done during the Holocaust, so thank you to the author for bringing their stories to the light.
Thank you to the author, St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you NetGalley, the publisher , and the author, for the opportunity to read and give an honest review of this book.
I read and enjoyed the author’s first two books in this series having to do with the Holocaust. She writes well and her characters have a lot of strength and courage to survive in the most horrible of circumstances.
In this book, three Jewish sisters make a pact, as little girls, to always stay together and to take care of one another. Somehow, they manage to do this despite the fact that they end up in the worst of Nazi concentration camps. They make it their job to survive and to bring each other through it, alive.
They have lost family members and end up starting their own families in Israel. For the next two generations they make sure that their families know their stories and what it cost them to get to their current lives.
You might think this would be a sad story and yes, parts of it were. However, it is mostly upbeat and also heartwarming at the same time. If you like historical novels, especially those around the period of World War2, this book is the one for you.
This third book that Heather Morris has written is phenomenal.
Lots of tears later, I still loved this book as much or more than the
first two.
While this book could be read as a Standalone, it has just enough
tidbits from the first two books to make it such a beautiful story.
I fell in love with those three sisters. I'll never forget them, just like
I haven't forgotten the characters from the first two books.
Thank you so much, NetGalley, Heather Morris, your publisher, and
everyone involved with making this story happen!
Three Sisters is a story of courage, family, and love between three sisters that have to survive the most horrendous time in history. This book is set during WWII and follows the path of three sisters that vowed to always watch out for each other and did whatever they needed to survive the atrocities of the German death camps. It follows their lives throughout and the changes and memories that can never be erased. Heather Morris has done an amazing job of bringing the reader right into the real life story of these sisters and their families. Her descriptions and the emotions that they bring about are heart wrenching and touching. The only way this story can’t affect the reader is if there is no heart at the beginning of reading the book.
Another great story by this author. There is still so many stories to be told from this time in history. So many horrific things happen to people because of their heritage. Though it is sometimes hard to read am thankful when an author takes the times to research and then share the story with the world.
Thankful to netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy.
I received a complimentary copy of Three Sisters from NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
Wow! This was a fantastic novel, which I believed was possibly a bit far fetched at first…I only learned that it was based on facts when I read the author’s note at the end. Well written, tactfully covered events follow the timeline of the lives of the three sisters. I am very impressed and I just ordered The Tattooist of Auschwitz because I appreciate this author so much. Great book!
Heather Morris has the remarkable ability to transport the reader into the horrors of the.Holocaust as we fall in love with her characters. This novel focuses on THREE SISTERS and a promise they made to their father before his death. Their pledge to take care of each other guides their actions, even during the most harrowing times that humans have faced.
The sisters, CIBI, MAGDA and LIVI, are well-drawn and totally sympathetic. Morris manages to guide them through the worst years, and bring a remarkable sense of closure to their post-war lives.
Once again, Morris has created a memorable novel. I thank Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this novel. I am certain that reading groups and seminars will enjoy discussing this newest Morris novel.
