This book was a quick, easy read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I loved the angsty romance, the sweet premise, and the vibrant, loveable characters.
Benny was such a pure, lovable character, his food puns were a highlight for me, but Reese really stole the show. She was prickly and ambitious, driven and a total perfectionist. I saw so much of my teenage self in her and I'm so excited for people to read this book and relate to her just as much as I did.
A fun YA romance with a feminist spin, LOVE FROM SCRATCH was the perfect holiday read for me.
This is marketed as a YA romance, but it seemed to border on a not spicy NA romance. Love from Scratch was super cute, Reese and Benny interns at a cooking channel who meet on set for a cooking video, but then it becomes clear the two of them are competing for the same fall internship.
Benny was very cutesy and charming with an abundance of nicknames and puns. Reese was a little high strung seeming at first, which made her hard to like. Overall the way the romance between the two of them developed was really well done and natural seeming.
I confess I had picked this book to read by mistake, as it wasn't supposed to be the next on my list, and for the first pages or maybe the whole first chapter, I didn't realize this was YA. This is to say, I think it is a book that should agree even with the romance/chick lit readers that usually skip the YA genre.
3.5, rounding up.
One of the reasons is that it doesn't take place in a school but in a summer internship for a famous culinary show. Reese is about to start college and would very like to guarantee the spot for the fall. Things change for her when she and the other intern must host a special episode for the show, despite her lack of culinary practice. The two go viral but with that comes a competition between them, even though they are attarcted to one another and worse, the comments on the internet will make Reese have to face a past trauma she thought she'd left behind in school.
While the beginning wasn't so obviously YA, we do find some typical elements there, though not as in your face as most of the others. For this reason, I believe it is recommendable for both regular romance readers who like witty characters and YA lovers such as myself.
This is a romantic story but I like how it deals with the toxicity both online and in real life. Sometimes I thought it could go overboard, as in losing focus of the story to make speeches, but luckily it wasn't the case. This is a down-to-earth but still swoon-worthy read that will entertain you.
This book is pure YA enemies to lovers if The Hating Game met Chopped, and it was absolutely precious. It was chock full of compelling language that pulled me in. It read quickly and delivered on so much banter between Reese and Benny. So flipping cute!
I always roll my eyes when I see "cute" in a review, but I can't help it. My heart soared with this sweet storyline. WILL be recommending to my friends based on the chaotic Reeses cake redemption scene alone.
This one was cute! I liked it and I didn’t find myself being bored like I do with some YA books. It was romance-y but not in a weird off putting way. The book gave me The Ex Talk (by Rachel Lynn Solomon) vibes but if it were a Disney movie. It was fun and the banter was cute and flirty too.
3.75 stars! It was very cute!
Definitely for you if you enjoy:
- Enemies to lovers
- Fun, flirty banter
- Feminism! Yeah!
Reese Camden is polite southern hospitality and has landed her dream internship in marketing for Friends of Flavor, her favorite food channel. She just needs to kill it this summer and land the fall internship but the only thing standing in her way is Benny, the culinary intern who’s all dimpled smiles and backward caps.
When Reese and Benny are thrown together for an impromptu video, the fans of the channel instantly fall in love with them, all their banter and all of their chemistry on screen too. After going viral, the higher ups decide to give them a small series competing against one another making food. Denying their chemistry gets harder and harder for Reese but landing that fall internship is her endgame. She has to decide what she can handle and what needs to be set aside.

I feel happy knowing books like this will exist for current and future teens where they’re talking about things like feminism and what falls under that topic. I think it’s important to show characters who are open to talking about things like that within relationships.
Omg this book was such a quick, cute, entertaining read! All the banter between Reese and Benny, IM IN LOVE. This book is so fun with the foods, sincere conversations, and all the truths spilling out. Even though this book was a nice read, some parts were dragged out a little.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for an eARC version of this novel in exchange for my honest and personal review.
This book was a delightful easy to read romance. The concept was great—interns at a cooking network, stuck together to not only star in a spur-of-the-moment cooking short that takes off, but then forced to compete for the top spot internship.
I was surprised and impressed to find that the content was more than just a surface-level romance. Benny was like, an ideal mate in how open and communicative he was. Maybe a bit unrealistic, but appreciated. The journey that Reese walks in this novel was so familiar—probably to a lot of women—and I appreciated how important it was to the storyline.
I love this book so much. It was so funny and had the sweetest love story. I would totally recommend!
Loved this book! I’ve always been a fan of Food Network and watched shows like cupcake wars so I knew I had to check this out. It was super cute and their chemistry was just perfect!
Reece, a recent high school graduate, lands an internship for the summer with her favorite network which produces cooking shows (think The Food Network) called Friends of Flavor. Reece has been a fan of all the FoF shows for a couple of years and seems a bit starstruck when she first encounters some of her favorites at the station.
And then she meets Benny. Benny is also a summer intern at the network. And he'd hot. And charming. And of course you know how the rest of this adorable rom-com is going to go.
Very fun book with likable characters and zero bad language or sex scenes.
I really enjoyed this book, it was really sweet. This book is another I would be categorizing as a no stress read along with the likes of books by Emma Mills, Emily Wibberly and Austin Siegemund-Broka, and Morgan Matson. If you like their books I would definitely pick this one up.
There was chemistry straight off the bat between the two leads, Reese and Benny. There was a lot of banter there that I really enjoyed reading and wanted more of. I also enjoyed the societal commentary having to do with expectations put upon women in media.
Overall Love from Scratch was a fun, no-stress, and romantic read, perfect for people looking for an easy story to read story between those high stress, non-stop fantasies, or just for contemporary romance fans. This is an author who I will definitely keep an eye on for future releases.
Loved this book! Benny and Reese's romance was sweet, and the workplace twists were fun. I liked the Friends of Flavor concept with the test kitchen video series stars. Benny was a great male lead--respectful, funny, flirty without being too pushy.
My one nitpick is about the rumors about Reese's sexual promiscuity in high school. Reese as the narrator tells the reader that the rumors aren't true but "of course it wouldn't matter if they were," saying that it was bad to spread the rumors regardless... but if she feels that way, then why is it so important to her to get across the fact that *she* hasn't had sex. This is a theme I've noticed in multiple romance novels recently and I hope publishing can move on from it soon.
Reese and Benny are both interns at Friends of Flavor, an online cooking channel akin to Buzzfeed's Tasty. The two of them get thrown together for an impromptu video which ends up going viral and turns into a segment of its own.
If this sounds like the sort of exciting opportunity an intern would jump at, this is where Love from Scratch adds in the nuance. As interns competing for the same job their performance and attitude matters. Reese's story is so relatable here.
She's navigating the workforce for the first time at the very start of her career but discovers her male bosses see and treat her differently that her male counterpart. I'm probably being dramatic when I say that reading this was incredibly cathartic, seeing a positive example of navigating toxic workplace issues and the impact of female mentorship in a career.
Somehow between their terrible food puns and Reese's catastrophic baking, Benny inches his way through Reese's shield. He is goofy, charming, and perceptive. These two had me racing through this book to get more of them on page together.
I will be thinking about this book for a while still and it's sure to be a longtime favorite. Thank you so much to @netgalley and @randomhousekids for this ARC, Love from Scratch is out on April 5th!
Why you should read:
🧁 Cooking shows/competitions
🧁 Female mentorship
🧁 Fighting misogyny at work
🧁 All the pet names/nicknames
🧁 Socially aware social media
🧁 Healthy relationships
🧁 Cheesy food puns
Ah this book made me so hungry! There is so much yummy food mentioned and I just wanted to jump into the story and eat it all. The setting is an online food show with a variety of different segments and I liked how modern it was. Less people watch tv and more watch streaming and this was a great way of making the plot relatable to a younger generation.
The characters were also super cute and I loved their chemistry. Benny and Reese are so playful and have a never ending amount of food puns ready to go. He's so supportive of her and wants her to succeed and she's starting to believe that there are good guys out there after being burned in the past. Everyone needs someone like Benny in their life to joke around with and cheer you on.
This is a pretty lighthearted book but it does address the important issue of women having double standards and being treated less than men. Reese is labeled a slut if she flirts with Benny, but cold and aloof if she doesn't. The men in charge of her company enforce a dress code just on the women and see her as an assistant instead of the star. Things like this are too prevalent in society and I'm glad Reese had friends to lean on and back her up. The more this is talked about, hopefully things can change.
I thoroughly enjoyed this and I'm excited for the world to check it out!
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All opinions are my own. Thank you to Delacorte Press and NetGalley for the copy.
Thank you NetGalley an advanced copy of this novel.
Sizzling indeed. This was the perfect rom-com! Who doesn't love enemies to lovers all in a culinary setting. This is defiantly one I will we recommending to friends.
I am so thankful I was able to be given a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book exceeded any and all expectations that I had going into this. I thought it was just going to be a light/airy easy book, but this book actually contained some serious topics.
This book was SO CUTE!!
This young adult book was a refreshing read, and I love me a good cooking/rivalry romance.
That aside, the main point of this book that I absolutely adored was the subject matters of gender discrimination/sexism/norms and things of that nature and tackled it well. You don't see too often nowadays in stories that take on those heavy hitting topics and do it as exceptionally as Kaitlyn did. Quite frankly I would read anything else this author puts out.
Loved it!
It was such a cute rom-com! This was the first book I read that revolved around cooking, and I was not disappointed. Benny, he is swoon-worthy! From the nicknames to his jokes and overall personality, you can't love him. Reese, on the other hand, is everything I want to be, she is ambitious and knows what she wants. I loved getting to know these characters and seeing their romance bloom. I definitely recommend it!
Such a cute Rom Com that was perfect to brighten the spirit. Very heartfelt with realistic views but totally sweet both metaphorically and realistically. So happy I got the chance to read!
