What a scrumptious addition to the YA contemporary world! Reese, Benny and all their F/friends are a delight.
Benny meets Reese while interning for a web-based "food network" channel. She's got some issues due to getting socially and emotionally run over by an older boyfriend in high school. She decides the best thing to do after living in a suburban Kentucky in an environment where everyone thinks she's the town slut (she's not) is to run across the country and start over. Good for her. Things don't go easy for Reese and she has some hard lessons to learn. Internally, she knows the faceless internet trolls' judgement and harassment (by the CEO) she experiences is wrong and why, but she has to figure out how to fix it.
Reese and Benny are smitten for each other from the get-go. Their chemistry is cute and they have that 'summer lovin' ' feeling that make YA books so fun. There is a LOT of internal dialog for Reese while she's processing and doubting everything and everyone, including herself. I wish there was more intervention for her earlier in the book by some supporting mentor-type characters (like even 60% would be great) - by having them swoop in at the end and help 'fix' everything in the last 10% makes it feel like someone else did it all for her and weakens her character arch.
I'd still recommend this to my (very Southern) high schoolers who like romance, food, and believe in 'fighting the patriarchy' - but a reader who is fairly self-possessed and not down with letting people walk all over them might be easily put off by the heroine in this one.
Thanks so much for the ARC! It was a speedy, fun read!
This was amazing. Everything from the cover to the story line sold me. This is what my students deserve to see.
Read this book if you love:
- Rivals to lovers !!
- FOOD (this is basically set at buzzfeed tasty)
- Themes & discussion of feminism
- Witty banter, lots of tension, and very cute romantic moments
- Love interests with puppy energy
Love From Scratch is a feminist rivals to lovers novel that absolutely stole my heart. It follows Reese and Benny, two competing interns on an online culinary network (again,, basically buzzfeed tasty). She and Benny are thrown together for a video shoot that goes viral, making them the internet's newest ship. Audiences are hungry for more, and their bosses at Friends of Flavor are happy to deliver. Soon Reese and Benny are in an all-out food war — two interns competing for the same fall internship. But it might be more than rivalry between these two…
I completely devoured this book — the plot centered around Reese and Benny’s show on the network, and it was just so fun to watch them cook up different concoctions, with tension-filled banter and romantic chemistry along the way.
The romance in this book is so wholesome and sweet, with Reese being strong-willed, witty, and clever and Benny being charming, goofy, and teensy bit cocky lol. Benny is also the most perceptive boy that did such a good job of being in touch with his emotions and being upfront with Reese about his feelings for her. It made me so happy how he always wanted to support Reese and the way the two of them were able to get vulnerable with each other. Seeing them get to know each other and work their way through obstacles made my heart unbelievably happy. Not to mention the little wholesome moments between them that made me swoon. CUTE.
Incomplete list of romantic moments that made me feel,,, very very lonely:
- Their nicknames for each other (and never using each others’ real names)
- Her wearing his flannel
- “i’d listen to you talk like that every day if you let me”
- The “put your hand against the wall when they’re leaning back against it” move asljfasj
The biggest theme in this book was feminism, and I liked the way the book handled it. The main character, Reese, faces a lot of misogyny from her bosses, online viewers, and people from her hometown — people tell her she should “smile more” and be more like Benny, people think she’s promiscuous based on false rumors started by a popular guy, people only notice her body instead of what she delivers in substance. Reese learns how stop letting others dictate her self-worth (living to please herself and not others) and take a stand against this misogyny.
Something I really appreciated was one of the characters pointing out the increased discrimination that people in marginalized communities (POC, queer people) experience. This is especially important because Reese is white and cishet, so she was able to recognize her privilege.
I also liked the realistic approach the book took when portraying the world. There were some bigots in the book, and it wasn’t like they completely let go of their bigotry and everything was sunshine and rainbows. Even though these people still weren’t the best, the book still illustrated some of the positive change that went on. Good resolution, but also no sugarcoating.
TW: misogyny, slut shaming, online harassment (hate comments), racism & homophobia (mentioned/described)
Oh My God!! What a cute and charming book. This is a rom-com about Reese and Benny and how both of them end up at the same internship for a big food channel, think Epicurious. I love the way Reese communicates her thoughts throughout this book and doesn’t let anyone pull her down or try to strip her of her personality. This book also deals with some heavy topics like misogynistic ideals in work place environments especially when competing with male coworkers. I loved Reese’s support system and I loved how sweet Benny was. This was really nice and lighthearted and It’s the perfect read if you’ve been in a slump! Thank you so much to netgalley for letting me have an arc. All opinions are my own.
This book is perfect for fans of enemies to lovers romance and Bon Appetit. Bit of a weird mix, but it gels together like peanut butter and chocolate. While primarily focused on the budding love between Benny and Reese, this book also discusses topics like feminism, sexual harassment, and cyberbullying. Y'all know I love a romcom with a little oomph. While more sweet than steamy given its YA audience, it's still totally suitable for adults and doesn't feel lacking in any way. The tension between the two main characters makes up for it in every way. But word from the wise when it comes to books about food - BRING SNACKS.

This book was so sweet my teeth hurt. There was really no drama or any problems between Reese and Benny. The conflict took a back seat. It felt unrealistic but it was a cute fast paced romance.
Love from Scratch is a sweet story with an equally sweet romance. Hill does a fantastic job including serious topics like sexism into the plot while keeping the book light and fluffy. Reese is such a great character who is easy to like and root for while overcoming issues in her internship. Benny is a loveable romantic interest who is attentive to his girlfriends issues too. I LOVED this book so much and it is perfect for fans of Emma Lord and bakers of all ages.
I really loved this book! The love story is everything you can hope for and the characters have REAL LIFE relatable flaws, pasts, and issues. May I also just say...thank you to Kaitlyn Hill! Thank you for shining light on an issue that likely plagues many but most are made to feel like they're looking too much into it or being "too sensitive." After reading this book I thought back to all those times I felt uncomfortable in a situation but dismissed it. Going forward I hope to feel comfortable and confident in standing up for myself if the need arises. This book may be a work of fiction but it opened up my eyes to the very real problems we still face today. All that being said, lesson or not, I enjoyed this book and would recommend.
A feminist, rom-com with an adorable book boyfriend? Of course I wanted to read this book, and you will to.
This book manages to give you all those wonderful feelings from your favorite rom-com while also touching on some heavier things, specifically the treatment of woman in and out of the workplace.
I think will book will leave woman feeling incredibly validated and empowered, while being able to relate to the struggles within this book. This book is important for woman of any age to read, but especially young woman just entering the work place.
But even with those heavier topics aside, this book is just straight up adorable. From the cooking aspect to the relationship between Reese and Benny, this book makes me want to be an intern at my favorite cooking show and meet a super cute guy who listens to my feelings and respects me.
An absolutely stunning debut. It has everything you want from a YA romcom and more. If I were still in high school, this book would've become my entire personality. Can't wait to read Hill's next book.
This was SO cute! If you are anything like me and obsessed with watching cooking channels on YouTube like Bon Appétit and Epicurious, and love reading rom coms - this book was the perfect combination of the two!
When marketing intern Reese Camden and culinary intern Benny Beneventi get thrown together in a last minute cooking show "Amateur Hour" at Friends of Flavor (a wildly popular cooking channel in Seattle) they have instant chemistry and hilarious banter sparks between them. But as they both realize they are competing against each other for the same fall job at Friends of Flavor things heat up into an all out food war in the kitchen which complicates things outside of the studio for the pair as they quickly become an internet sensation.
Benny is absolutely adorable! Throughout the story we see glimpses of the double standards in workplaces between men and women and an ongoing conversation about feminism that adds another layer to the dynamic between the characters. I loved, and really related to Reese and how sassy she is - and the battle to remain true to herself when faced with immense pressure and injustice.
Overall this book was sweeter than Benny and Reese's macaroons - plus there are more than enough cheesy food puns to go around (see what I did there). The support that many of the characters had for each other was such a beautiful picture of what it looks like to lift another up to success versus tearing someone down just to get ahead, which was really cool to see in a young adult rom com! This was such a fun read!
ARC kindly provided in exchange for my honest review.
This book was cute and funny, and a quick read. The chemistry between Reese and Benny leapt off the page and kept you hooked in the story.
Two summer interns competing for one fall internship spot... Reese and Benny are so lovable and sweet! I loved every second of reading this romcom -- it's light, hilarious, fast paced, and warm all wrapped up in a little package. Such a fun read and just what I was in the mood for!
The book also touches on issues surrounding feminism, misogyny in the workplace, and gender expectations/stereotypes. It's easy to forget that Reese and Benny are only 18 and haven't yet started their freshman year of college! Had the story taken place the summer before/after senior year, it would've been interesting to see how their lives would develop further -- but I have no gripes with how it is as written! Such a fun time.
Can't wait to read with Kaitlyn Hill writes next!!!
Many, many thanks to Kaitlyn Hill, Random House Children's, and NetGalley for this ARC.
I thought this was such a cute and easy read! I was hooked from the beginning of the book and really loved the chemistry between Reese and Benny. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a cute rom com!
This is a delightful, swoony, funny, feminist rom-com! I loved the cooking show set-up, the rivals-to-lovers trope, the setting, and both the MC and LI. This book was as sweet and easy to swallow as a pastry, but with plenty of substance behind it. I adored it and will read whatever Hill writes next!
Reese is a southern gal who has won an internship at a cooking show in Seattle dealing with social media. Benny has an internship in the cooking department. When disaster strikes Benny and Reese are asked to save the day by doing a show while the bosses are away. The production is a disaster for Reese though Benny saves the day. Through many fun and quirky obstacles they begin to fall in love.
A cute tale with charming characters. Reese does not want the spotlight of the show and Benny is a natural. Opposites attract however. The banter is fun to read- they call each other by anything other than their names and it is fun to anticipate this clever, delightful banter. I would recommend this book to my patrons.
What a cute book about romance and finding love. I adored that they worked well as a team . I loved that he had her back and gave her cute nick names. I loved the other chefs when they all met up . It did bring up some issues with women/men and how men treat women. I loved that she loved art and he was a cook too. Very cute.
LOVE FROM SCRATCH by Kaitlyn Hill is a sweet New Adult romance. Reese landed her dream job - a summer intern position in the marketing department for Friends of Flavor, a foodie video channel like Bon Appetit. She’s hoping the summer job will help her land the fall internship.
And then she meets Benny, the other intern. A cute boy with cooking skills and a restaurant background who’s also looking to land that fall spot.
The two fill in for a regular host and the video goes viral with the public shipping them big time. It’s tough to stay rivals when your feelings get in the way.
I love that Kaitlyn Hill wrote a meetcute, enemies to lovers in the workplace that also dealt with serious issues like online bullying, how men and women are perceived and treated differently in the workplace, and anxiety.
Reese and Benny were incredibly relatable - Reese with her anxiety and drive. Benny with his desire to do better and see that Reese was treated equally. I loved the other Friends of Flavor stars. And Reese’s friends were the perfect support group/cheer squad.
Perfect for Emma Lord and Sarah Suk fans.
