Good sections fo help people think about one thing/area at a time and not to overwhelm to much. Things like SMART goals, testing your niche, hiring an attorney, credit and more.
A great primer and way to start re searching your own future, an excellent resource for building your new business.
Starting a business can be an overwhelming experience, with so much to do and so many options, both good as well as those that can lead to a disaster. Become Your Own Boss gives a clearer picture to new entrepreneurs to maximize their chances of success the first time. Read this one and reap!
Become Your Own Boss in 12 Months literally changed my life.
This book has a step-by-step month-to-month plan to open your own business in 12 months. I was thinking about how to apply its lessons to my life. Luckily, I had already done most of the preliminary steps to get my life in order so I could join The Great Resignation. However, I couldn’t generate much enthusiasm for my business idea—opening an online accounting/bookkeeping service. What would differentiate my firm from thousands of others?
While reading an Emerson’s Experience within this book, I finally thought of an issue that drives me crazy that is relatively easy to solve but time consuming unless done at scale. I even have a mentor who is doing it for a tiny niche market—leaving a lot of market on the table. I have my new business idea that has nothing to do with accounting. Now, I just have to do some studying and market research to test out my idea.
So, if you too have a vague idea of starting your own business, Become Your Own Boss in 12 Months is a must read. While other books will motivate you to begin a business, this one will make sure your business has the best chance to succeed. Good luck to all the soon-to-be business founders out there. 5 stars and a favorite!

Planning to change your life and start your business? You may start with thin book because it provides a simple guide on planning, tools, tips for starting a small venture. I found the description detailed and accurate and think this book is a good guide for people who have never had or started their own small business venture.
A great book with easily implementable tips and tricks to becoming your own boss, setting up your own business bigger or smaller. The suggestions and examples help, and it's written in a chatty style. Easy to digest and implement. Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Melinda Emerson created an organized, detailed, and realistic handbook to help new small business owners plan for success. Emerson asks the readers realistic questions to consider before venturing off in their business endeavours. Fellow bloggers, there’s detailed information on starting a website, hosting, monetization, social media presence, and more! Whether you’re new or experienced, these chapters are incredibly helpful and could teach you something you didn’t know before.
Emerson touched on a point that a lot of small business owners can relate to, and that is it can be lonely at times. She provided tips on changing work environments, finding a community, and most importantly, sticking to a schedule. I found this part especially helpful because I find myself checking e-mails first thing in the morning and feeling as though I need to get started right away. Emerson states that if you don’t stick to a schedule, you’re basically working on someone else’s time. One of the reasons so many embark on starting their own business is to work on their own time and on their own terms. Creating business hours and sticking to them can be hard but it’s crucial.
If you’re thinking about starting your own business, I highly recommend this book. It may seem like a lot of information and may be overwhelming, but it’s a realistic guide that dives deep into the world of business and entrepreneurship. Emerson does a great job walking the reader through each step. Each chapter is filled with information, but it gets right to the point. Even if you’re someone who is somewhat experienced in the field, I can guarantee that you will learn something new from this book. Thank you to NetGalley and Adams Media for this eARC in exchange for my honest review. This book is expected to be released in September 2021 and is available for pre-order through Amazon.ca.
