As always this Jennifer Chase thriller just cries out to be read in one sitting. Here we see Katie get tangled up with a serial killer although it takes time before anyone takes her seriously. Great characters and a great story, I loved this book.
Here I go again, down the rabbit hole of female law enforcement officers. This is the first book I've read in this series. I do have the others and need to catch up with Katie's story. Someone is offing former army canine handlers and Katie needs to figure out who it is before she become the target. My favorite character is Cisco. I'm partial to dogs and he is smart, and perceptive. The mystery was good, a,though the doecjtons were gruesome for the victims. I was baffled about the villain until the very end so I stunk at solving this crime. Bring on the next one.
Having read all 5 previous Detective Katie Scott books, it was a "no brainer" to request Pretty Broken Dolls. I would have to say, this novel is the best out of all 6 of them and that is saying a lot as they were all incredible! Jennifer Chase, has a way of drawing you in from the first chapter. The character development is on point and the writing style flows easily throughout chapters.
Pretty Broken Dolls, is a part of a 6 book (or maybe more) series, but can easily be read as a standalone. You will not be able to put this book down once you pick it up .
Detective Katie has had a rough past, and now she is right on the tails of a serial killer and has come to terms with the fact that only she can stop him.
This is one of those stories that you just cant stop and have that need to know, nail biting, edge of your seat feeling throughout the entire novel. I highly recommend Pretty Broken Dolls to all my fellow crime loving readers!
A good thriller written in a fast pace without any slouch. Cisco doesn’t have much action this time and the reason behind the killings is weak.
3.5 stars
Pretty Broken Dolls is a page-turner. The whole plot kept me guessing who the killer was and why Katie seemed to be his/her focus. The atmosphere created by the author was dark but believable. I loved the relationship between Katie and her partner McGaven, but I was not too fond of the one with her fiance Chad. I have not read the previous books in the series, so I do not know the details of Katie and Chad's relationship, but from what I could gather from this novel, they do not seem right for each other. Also, I did not like Agent Campbells' storyline ending, and I do not think it was clear who the killer was in the first murder. Nevertheless, I think the plot twist was brilliant, and I did not see it coming. In general, I think this was a good book.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture, I had the opportunity to read the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I’ve not read this series to date but I found this book a great stand alone. Lots of action with likeable characters especially Cisco. Enjoyed this quick read and will go back and read the series from the beginning. Katie was strong and a great lead. Looking forward to what’s next.
Thank you NetGalley for this arc
Love this series, this is another great instalment . Plenty of twists and turns, definitely worth reading
When Katie and McGavin get assigned to a new set of cold cases all with similar M.O.'s, they don't realize what kind of uphill battle they are about to set out on. All the cases seems to be somehow linked to the army... especially the specialized K-9 unit.. This brings up all kinds of memories for Katie, we get so see some flashbacks about her time with her own K-9 unit.. My favorite was when she first met Cisco, one of the best animal companions ever..
This case is particularly action packed as they are dealing with a serial killer, who kills every year, and the next murder happens to be due any time. They have so much to go through, and so many potential suspects that everything shifted as each new piece of evidence was revealed. I had no idea who the killer was going to end up being up until the very end.
I love that this follows a cold case unit, Katie and McGavin are great partners, and I love the dynamic between them and all of the other side characters. Cisco is awsome!! .. Its definitely a great series that gets better with every book, and I can't wait to see what kinds of cases they will be solving next!
First off like always I want to say a huge thank you to the publisher Bookouture , the author Jennifer Chase , and to NetGalley for the invite to join this blog tour as well as letting me read and review it . Can't wait to go back and read books 4-5 , non stop action from the start , series keeps getting better , characters that are like family .And will have you wanting to know what happens next. Another thing I like about this series is how the author a cold case as the set up for this story and how you get to see more inter action between the characters and see more about Katie's past .
Detective Katie Scott faces an unusual set of cold cases brought to her by the FBI. A series of women murdered and left in poses with garish make-up to remember broken dolls. Katie and her partner are uncertain about how they were chosen for the job and realize that it is going to endanger their lives. The common denominator among all victims is a history with K9 military training, which makes Katie a good choice to investigate but also could put a bullseye on her back. When a new murder victim is found in Pine Creek, the heat is one to find out who is murdering these women. Meanwhile, Katie's personal life takes an unexpected turn, but she doesn't have time to focus on her relationship with Chad because of the case. It's a nail-biter chase to save another life.
I absolutely adore this series and look forward to each new one with excitement!
This wasn’t my favourite - mainly because Cisco was barely in it and he is my favourite! Katie and Mcgaven are asked to investigate a string of murders where women are left murdered with caked make up on’ the one thing they have in common is they were all K9 handlers in the army! Which is worrying for all as that ties Katie in with them.
There is the usual dramatic attacks on Katie - I am reckoning she can’t have any life insurance!!
Still a 5 start and I will devour her next one too!
Pretty Broken Dolls – Jennifer Chase
Detective Katie Scott and her canine Cisco return in another adventure in a series that has become one of my favorites to read!
Katie Scott and her partner Sean McGaven are serving a warrant to search a pond, and if Katie’s guess is correct, to retrieve the victim of a murder. As crews search the waters, she notices an individual outside of the crime scene tape, watching the search…watching her…. Once the body is recovered, she goes in search of him, but he leaves before she reaches him.
After a weekend off relaxing, Katie returns to work, only to immediately be summoned to the Sherriff’s office, where she again sees the man who was watching her crime scene. He is introduced as Special Agent Dane Campbell and he is here to ask for her assistance in a case that has his agency stone-walled. Acknowledging her cold case solve rate, he is hopeful that she can assist him in finding his killer.
As he outlines the case – three women who have been killed, each exactly a year apart, garishly displayed with heavy make-up applied, and a piece of jewelry tied nearby with ribbon – he reports that he believes the killer will strike again soon, in keeping with the yearly pattern. As Katie & Sean accept the case, she remains perplexed as to why she’s being asked to assist. Shortly thereafter, another victim turns up, this one at the local fairgrounds, secured to a Ferris wheel.
Katie quickly discovers a commonality between the victims, as well as a link to herself – all of the women were former dog handlers for the Army. A visit to her old Army base where she and Cisco first bonded brings back many memories but yields little in the way of clues. As she and Chad revisit the old crime scenes and sift through the pieces left of those broken lives, they find more questions than answers. But the killer is lurking close by and soon, a friend of Katie’s goes missing…can Katie find her friend and identify the killer, before it’s too late?
This is the sixth in a fantastic, action packed series of novels featuring Detective Katie Scott and her K9 Cisco. Katie is an engaging, spunky and loveable character with her own flaws as she continues struggling to overcome her anxiety & panic attacks resulting from her time deployed, as she excels in the civilian law enforcement world. Cisco – well who can resist such an awesome dog? Filled with all of the action, mystery and suspense you’re looking for in a good who-dun-it!! Now, as always, I anxiously await the next adventure for this duo! A great series!! Cannot recommend it enough!
I received this book as an Advance Reader Copy from #Netgalley & Bookouture in exchange for an objective review. Blog will publish 8/3
Part of a great series featuring Katie, her partner on the cold case team and Cisco her K9. Another fast paced thriller with lots of twists and turns
All the characters are good and interact well.
Katie and McGavin are drawn into a strange cold case and it takes them on one heck of a ride. This one is a serial killer with a large pool of suspects. The case hits home for Katie as the victims were all involved in a K9 program. There are plenty of twists and it kept me guessing. There's also some angst in her personal life that challenges the growth Katie has made. It's a good addition to the series.
When I think about a doll, I imagine a beautiful creature with lovely clothes and make up, but when I see a thriller with the word 'dolls' in the title, my stomach already does some somersaults, because often it means none of the beauty remains...
I really enjoy the characters the author created to form the police team. Sheriff Uncle Wayne is of course always looking out for his niece, but at work, she is an employee, just like the other officers. No special treatment there which I applaud because it must be very difficult. Katie is determined and no situations is too dangerous for her. I do sometimes like to slap her, when she goes out alone in the woods. In reality she is not alone. Her German shepherd Cisco is always around, but he cannot always save her. Gav is a great personality too and the perfect partner for Katie. Dr Dean is maybe a bit eccentric, but he is a great doctor and then there is John. He is a bit of a mystery to me and I like it. Somehow I don't always trust him, but on the other hand I really like him a lot.
Katie and her partners Gav and Cisco have their work cut out for them once again. There is only one way for them though: straight to the heart of the problem to put a stop to it for once and for all.
Fast paced, action and suspense filled and a great police team working against the clock: tick tock... 5 stars
Thank you, Jennifer Chase and Bookouture
Mandy knew her friend Jeanine had a habit of being late for things but she loved to party and missing a whole event wasn't like her at all. She had no idea what she would find in the small quiet neighbourhood but Jeanine's dead body definitely wasn't it.
Detective Katie Scott and partner Deputy Sean McGaven only find out about Jeanine a year later. With only limited information, and a feeling of things not being quite as they should, it seems the previous investigators are intentionally withholding evidence. As a successful and dedicated team unused to failure Scott and McGaven are undeterred and keep searching until they are dismayed to discover a link which is far too close to home for comfort.
This is the sixth Katie Scott novel and definitely the best so far. It was tense from the first page and I didn't want to put it down. There were a couple of things which were maybe a little vague but the storyline was original and flowed effortlessly to its conclusion. Katie and Sean are a great team and their relationship and banter has become more realistic with each book. I hope there is lots more to come in this series and I will definitely be on the look out for book number seven.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it highly.
My thanks to Bookoutre, Jennifer Chase and Netgalley.
I noticed that this was book 6 of this series!
This series gets consistently better.
The first book I read was Katie, going full stream ahead and endangering everyone! Now! Katie and McGavin both still charge full steam ahead, but at least some thought is put into it.
Slight thought, but!?
I am enamored of these characters and where they live!
Also, if I lived there? I'd have moved already!
Thanks Netgalley and Bookcouture for the read!
This is the 6th in the Detective Katie Scott series and this one is non-stop action from the word go! I thought I had it figured out pretty early on, but was wrong.
Hopefully book #7 is on its way soon!
I would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. I am sad to say that I have not read the previous 5 books in this series, but since finishing this one, I know I have to go back and read them. This was a fast paced thriller that kept my interest. I enjoyed the main character and the rest of the supporting cast. When Katie is asked to look into cold cases of murdered women and finds a link that even includes herself, she will stop at nothing to catch the killer.
As day breaks over the fairground, Detective Katie Scott forces herself to take in another disturbing scene in front of her. A woman, the same age as her, found slumped in the carriage of the Ferris wheel, red lipstick dragged across her lips, her throat cut. If you are looking for a good mystery with twists and turns then you will enjoy this. It is a great mystery full of suspense, lies, deceit, and amazing characters. Highly recommend! This is book 6 in the Detective Kate Scott series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
