New Teeth by new to me author, Simon Rich, is a wonderfully crafted collection of short stories that are equally heartwarming and riotously hilarious. Stories ranging from tips on parenting when dealing with monsters in your child’s closet, to a two-year-old private detective helping his baby sister client to solve a case, to murderous pirates finding a child stowaway on board trying to balance parenting and pirating, tagging along with Babe Ruth when he gets his big break with the Boston Red Sox and many more.
I liked some of the stories more than others, but overall, this was a fantastic read. The audio narration by Fred Berman was excellent. His voice talent is very apparent as he manages many accents and dialects in the different stories as well as his narration, infusing tone and emotion made for more enjoyment for the reader. Several of the stories had me laughing to tears while listening, with continued giggles after the story ended.
My Final Verdict: I had no idea what to expect from a Simon Rich book before I started, but I highly recommend this book to readers looking for hilarious and heartwarming stories. Simon Rich is definitely an author to keep an eye out for.
In this anthology, Simon Rich demonstrates what makes him such an up and coming comedy writer. From pirates who adopt a little girl who makes them mend their wild ways to a giant ape who saved a city but now has no job and feels out of things to a two year old detective on the case of his sister's missing unicorn to the true story of Babe Ruth and how he became the famous ballplayer reimagined, the humor and inventiveness of the author is apparent. Readers will go from fondly smiling to laugh out loud chortles as they read these delightful stories.
This was a fun book to read. Simon Rich has written for various television shows such as Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons and Pixar. He is the creator and showrunner for the shows Man Seeking Woman and Miracle Workers. The humor is lighthearted and never mean and the best word for this work is joyous. I listened to it and the various accents and narrations added quite a bit. This book is recommended for those looking for a light-hearted break.
I am a huge Simon Rich fan and anticipated reading/listening to his new collection of short stories. It did not disappoint. Great writing and "acting" all around.
This was such a sweet collection of stories all focused on the topic of teeth. Yes, this sounds odd, but it was quite a quirky, fun collection. I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook.
A light and fun listen with some serious and sincere points throughout. The myriad stories provide social commentaries on family life and parenting, the workplace, bureaucracy, growing up and growing older, but in a unique manner: Pirates learn to co-parent after discovering a child stowaway in Learning the Ropes; The Big Nap is a film noir style detective story featuring young children trying to make sense of their world; Case Study features an 1880s London Physician recognising a gulf in his marriage, as his wife finds more humour in her visitations with The Elephant Man than in their marriage, but couples therapy turns this around and Raised by Wolves witnesses a siberian female raised by wolves, now wife to and Insurance Executive worrying about the impending visit by her family for thanksgiving. Some of these tales will have you smiling and others laughing aloud. Fred Berman's wide repertoire of comedic voices make for a delightful listen. This collection of 11 stories are sketches with heart and feeling. A great listen with thanks to Hachette Audio, Little Brown & Company Publishing, Simon Rich and Netgalley.
If you loved Someone Who Will Love You in All Your Damaged Glory, you will love this book. These short stories are equal parts absurd, funny, and human, and I adored basically every single one of them. Simon Rich, an American humorist whose essays have been published in The New Yorker, McSweeneys, and many other publications, plus who wrote the recent film An American Pickle and TV series Miracle Workers, has a true talent for creating wacky stories out of normal situations and humanizing even the strangest of characters.
In this collection, you'll find:
• A detective noir featuring a hardened, world-weary three-year-old who has been hired by his younger sister, Baby Anna, to find her missing stuffed animal, and instead finds a conspiracy that goes all the way to the top: to daddy and mommy;
• A story from the perspective of a half-man, half-ape named Clobbo who is periodically called to the city to defeat aliens, but due to budget cuts and a lack of recent alien invasions, is transitioned into a Community Affairs management role;
• A pirate lore about a captain and his first mate who are ruthless in their piracy and quest for gold, but upon finding a young girl stowaway aboard their ship, are tasked with the impossible: parenting a toddler;
• A story about a girl named Lauren who was raised by wolves in Siberia, rescued, and now lives a normal life with her husband and daughter, working for Verizon. She no longer has contact with the wolves who raised her, oh, except when they come to Lauren's house for Thanksgiving every year;
and many more.
These stories are all a bit wacky, but at the heart of each one are relatable life lessons, lovable human traits, and a touching conclusion. The audiobook was wonderfully written with the narrator easily stepping into each different role, making it a fun way to enjoy these short pieces. Thank you to Hachette Audio and Little Brown for the audio ARC via Netgalley!
New Teeth is a collection of unexpected but sweetly funny stories by American humorist, novelist, and screenwriter, Simon Rich.
I’ll be honest and admit I hadn’t heard of him prior to reading this book but it sounded a little bit offbeat and quirky and I like to break up my reading habits when I can! I also love a short story collection.
There’s no cohesive theme binding the stories together, other than I guess, family and love.
Every story was based on a known concept or a cultural norm that was twisted slightly or often turned on its head altogether to see it from a new perspective. This had the effect of making the writing surprising, clever, and witty.
At times it’s silly, but it’s equally endearing. I listened on audio and my husband kept chuckling randomly when he’d come into the room; without even knowing the context it was a fun listen.
I’d highly recommend this on audio, it was an enjoyable and different read for me, and I’ll be looking out for more from Simon Rich in the future.
With thanks to @netgalley and @littlebrown for the opportunity to read New Teeth, in exchange for an honest review. Available to read now.
I am aware that Simon Rich has had two daughters under the age of five sharing quarantine with him and his wife. And even if I didn't know this, after reading his latest story collection, I would certainly suspect it!
Simon Rich has always been, and will hopefully always be, hilarious. Perhaps most telling of his current circumstances is the story "Beauty and the Beast," in which a screenwriter is literally cursed by his small daughter to endlessly play Beauty and the Beast with her. I was laughing out loud in the back of an Uber.
That dad is not the only one being ordered around by tiny girl children. Opening story "Learning the Ropes" is another standout, and a must-read for National Talk Like a Pirate Day. The pacifier on the collection's cover is the first clue of one of the major themes. The closing story "Everyday Parenting Tips" is another. Despite these and others, there are actually plenty of stories dealing with the world of adults and, uh, giant anthropomorphized apes.
Rich's humor is absurdist and not even a little subtle. He makes me laugh like a loon and stands up fantastically to repeat readings. No matter what's going on in the world--and these days it's a lot--I always feel better after reading him. I want to say, "Write faster!" But there's no question that he's worth waiting for.
I have enjoyed Simon Rich's work in the past but this is my first time with his writing in audio book format and I was not disappointed. The short stories by Rich were excellent. The stories are all unique and all enjoyably good work; I would have happily listened for several more hours. Rich is able to look at the world through a very unique lens causing for clever and funny writing. Whether it be about a toddler investigating his sister's missing toy or the retirement of a city super hero struggling with finding meaning, Rich described situations in a way that makes him the master. With each new story I would find myself wondering why no one else thought to tell a story from this viewpoint or character mind-set!
'It's in the sky. You get in an airplane, you watch cartoons and you wake up in her house and there's a turkey.' (in response to the question: Where's Florida?)
'Gaga was elusive. Sometimes she was lying in the recliner, sometimes she was small inside a phone.'
'It's the car's bedroom where it sleeps and there's a big door that goes up and down and it's a monster.' (in response to what is the garage?)
Fred Berman narrates the book. He does an excellent job of conveying humour and character differences. I actually thought there might have been additional narrators in places based on how well Berman changed his voice. Berman's reading speed was good, (I often find narrators read too slowly) and he brought the stories to life.
Special thanks to Hachette Audio for an early release copy of this audio book in exchange for an honest review.
What a fun, quick listen! I'm not usually a fan of short stories but these were funny, sweet, and endearing. I highly recommend the audio version because the characters are performed SO well - especially the pirates! If you're looking for a palate cleanser between books or a fun listen on a road trip, this is a perfect pick. Very entertaining but some deeper themes about parenting and relationships than you'd expect from such quick narratives.
A funny and engaging story collection! The narrator was excellent—very expressive and great at voices.
Format: audiobook
Author: Simon Rich ~ Title: New Teeth: Stories ~ Narrator: Fred Berman
Content: 4 stars ~ Narration: 5 stars
New Teeth is a collection of 11 great short stories. Not all of them are equally good, though. They are very entertaining, but some stories are outstanding. My favorite one is “Learning the Ropes”, which is about two pirates: Black Bones, Rotten Pete, and a little girl. The narrator was excellent; he narrated each story differently, each in its own unique style. If you are searching for a book that will make you laugh, I would recommend you to read this book, or even better to listen to an audiobook.
Thanks to the publisher Little, Brown & Company for the ARC and the opportunity to listen to this! All opinions are my own.
Thank you to Simon Rich, Hatchette Audio and Net Galley for an ARC audiobook copy of "New Teeth."
This is my first time to read Simon Rich, no idea what I'm getting into. I've read that he is a comedic writer with SNL creds. His stories in "New Teeth" are not funny at all, some of them almost made me cry!! As a parent, I was able to relate to the pirate story. It would be the most memorable and emotionally relatable story for me. The other stories are funny and I just love the absurdities in his stories. I would definitely recommend this collection of short stories! I truly enjoyed it! Kudos also to the narrator!
Thank you Netgalley for this advanced audio edition of New Teeth by Simon Rich.
These are a series of short stories chock full of humor, wit, irony, and sarcasm. Each one made me laugh out loud, and smiling at the creativity of the author. The narrator was absolutely perfect for each story, and I was very impressed with his range in accents and acting. If the F word doesn't scare you, these would be great to listen to with a family of teens. I loved listening to this, it was a delight for the summer.
Braces yourself for a wild ride

This is my first time reading - or listening to - Simon Rich and it's been transcend-dental (sorry, not sorry). As is the nature of a collection of stories, I liked some more than others, but almost all of them were one the "more" end of the scale.
Rich overlays familiar situations or concepts - parental advice, city budget cuts - with absurd elements, such as a mutant superhero forced into management. The result is hilarious, the humour ranging from a smile-raising quip to a solid snort-aloud-on-the-train punchline. My favourite tale is the toxic workplace with the socially inept robot. Not only are the robot's futile attempts to entertain his co-workers utterly genius, but I loved the well-observed digs at workplace culture.
Tooth be told (last one, I promise), I was initially sceptical. When I heard the first story I was put off by the pirate accent, but I moved on to the next one and am so glad I did.

SOUNDBITE
I cannot believe that this entire audiobook was read by one person. Fred Berman is incredibly vocally versatile, delivering a pirate's drawl as easily as the stilted boom of a giant ape. What's more, he delivers the funny. Will keep an eye out for more books he narrates.

SHALL I COMPARE THEE TO...
Given Rich's SNL creds, it's unsurprising, but still delightful that this listen reminded me of a sketch show, but one with little heartwarming messages.
Massive thanks to Hachette Audio, Little, Brown & Company and of course NetGalley for the audio ARC I received in return for an honest review.
I received this audiobook earlier today, turned it on to listen to “some of it” while I cleaned the house and before I knew it, I was laughing and continued to listen until I finished it. I found things to do around the house so I could have an excuse to continue to listen to this fantastic audiobook. From the very beginning, the narrator (I mean...pirate) had me interested. When I first read this book was about “parenting,” I was a little nervous as a child-free by choice person, but honestly, this was such a good collection of stories as it was so much fun and not the “typical” parenting sort of jokes/genre. I really liked it and can see just about anyone enjoying this collection. I did not read this, but listened to this audiobook and the narrator was FANTASTIC.
Thank you to Little, Brown and Company, and NetGalley for the advanced copy! Simon Rich is a new to me author, but I was quickly sold on this humorous set of short stories, focusing on parenthood. His writing is bold and witty and the pacing of the storytelling kept me reaching for more.
I had no idea what I was getting into when I picked up "New Teeth" but I found this book totally amusing and I look forward to reading more of Rich's writing in the future. The narration on the audiobook was perfect for this content and I highly recommend it.
