Karl Ove Knausgård is absolutely brilliant. His writing is deep, thought-provoking but also simply beautiful. The Morning Star, his latest novel, delivers on all those fronts. As a reader expect to be taken on a wild, unpredictable literary ride.

The story follows a number of different characters over the course of 2 days. At the core of it is juxtaposition of human existence on both micro and macro levels. A new star appears in the sky, influencing and changing things in ways perceptible only to the reader. Knausgård's characters go about their lives, unaware of the star's meaning and purpose. Behind the curtain of unusual storytelling structure hide some heavy, philosophical topics - Is there God? Afterlife? What is the purpose of faith? What is the meaning of life?

I loved reading 666 pages of this novel (with a minor exception being Egil's essay on God and religion at the very end of the book. I found it a tad pretentious and little too much like mandatory reading in a university level philosophy course) but most of all I appreciated the fact that Knausgård does not dumb down things for his readers. This book is definitely for those readers who love their endings open to interpretation.

Extremely grateful to NetGalley & Penguin Random House Canada for gifting me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
