I guess I'll just have to keep up with everything A.C. Esguerra releases in the future, because I loved Eighty Days. I had high expectations but it was even better than I thought it would be - and now I want to buy a physical copy just so I can read again all the time.
This has everything: interesting characters, romance, political revolution, cool planes... The pacing was quite good too, with the events happening quickly enough to give a sense of high stakes, fitting with the whole war and oppression themes. The first part of the book was a bit harder to get through, since we're introduced to the world without much explanation, thrown inside the universe of planes and bad government very suddenly, but the more I read the more things became clearer. And for the art, there's absolutely nothing to complain about: it's beautiful and I love it.
The only bad thing is that, despite being over 300 pages long, I want more! I fell in love with the characters and I'd love to see more of them.
A gripping story about a pilot who is entangled in much more than bargained for after getting involved with a thief. I am a longtime fan of the author after running across their work at Comic Arts LA and am so happy to have gotten to read this phenomenal story. The only reason I didn't give the book 5 stars was because the action scenes were illustrated in a way that made them hard for me to follow. That aside, I highly recommend this book!
The. book itself is fantastic!
It's full of adventures, full of love , full of freedom.
A good one!
As a whole I think the story and characters are very interesting, but it was really hard to pick out the details in the art and speech bubbles. You kind of have to focus really hard to understand what you're seeing and reading, and you don't always know who is speaking. Its a shame, because I really like the characters.
Many thanks to NetGalley and BOOM! Studios for providing me with a DRC of this graphic novel for an honest review.
Oh my god! I couldn't put this one down - can't believe it's a debut! A.C. Esguerra is an author to look out for. With these types of stories, it's always a hit or miss for me. I didn't know what to expect at first and I will admit that it was a let down realizing the graphic novel was not in full-color after that absolutely gorgeous cover; I can safely say that it was a very enjoyable read. (Don't get me wrong, the art is beautiful, I'm just greedy and want more because of how absolutely stunning it is.) The characters were so freaking interesting that I wish there was another volume of this on the way, might have fallen in love with Sable and Jay. The narration style was perfect to make you get into the heads of these characters and like them even more. The storyline gets a bit confusing and all over the place at some point, or at least it was like that for me, so I would recommend not binging it in one sitting like I did if you start feeling a bit lost in the middle. Like I said, this could easily have more volumes, there is just so much world building here that I feel is wasted on a standalone novel. So much potential too. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who wishes to read a captivating graphic novel with a cute and heartwarming love storyline on the side. The characters are well developed, fleshed out, and very VERY loveable, the art is gorgeous and the story itself is interesting enough to keep you hooked. Please give this a read if you can!
Eighty Days has beautiful artwork and an engaging story. I sped through this graphic novel and would recommend it for young readers. Love the style, love the representation.
Eighty Days is a really fun and exciting graphic novel! I was immediately drawn in by the gorgeous art style and premise. This is definitely a. must-read for sure!
Summary: A pilot wants nothing more than to fly. Or so he thought, until he crosses paths with a mysterious thief whose tricks draw him into unchartered territory and new adventure.
This story was extremely confusing BUT THE ART WAS AMAZING! Like I could not get past HOW AMAZING. I was just staring at all of the pages, completely lost for what was happening, but loving the look of it.
This is a futuristic world where the government (bad) owned everyone? And a pilot falls in love with a thief, but gets caught? then the thief finds him with the help of the pilots old best friend who now works for the bad guys? but is slowly realizing they are the bad guys.... I think....
While I was very confused the ENTIRE time, i was still entertained and found myself enjoying the book. I think if I could have had the opportunity to ask a few questions I would have been able to follow things a lot better. But I came for the art and the art was successful!
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for giving me a copy of this graphic novel in exchange for an honest review.
This was good, I usually finish a graphic novel in one sitting, but it took me a while to finish this one. I don't know why, I think because it felt both dense and like there wasn't enough information. I wasn't immediately sucked in and I didn't connect to the characters.
Jay is a pilot who ends up teaming up with a rebel thief, Fix, in order to take down AVO, an organization bent on taking over and replacing the current government. Jay finds himself on the run with Fix, rebelling against a brutal regime and falling in love along the way. The romantic aspect is cute, but doesn't overwhelm the plot.
The writing style is unique, often told from the viewpoint of Jay's flight logs or as written conversations between the characters. The font style changes depending on the character.
A fairly large book, this is a stand alone title. Artwork is a bit wispy, but still well drawn. Some of the action sequences were a little hard to follow, but very enjoyable overall.
Thank you to netgalley for providing me with this arc in exchange for an honest review.
I really loved this comic!! I absorbed it all in one sitting. The story was so well crafted and easy to follow. The art style was beautiful I loved the sketch aesthetic. Fix and Jay were my favorites I loved them so much. Can’t wait for more people to read their story!
Uh... wow.
Just, wow.
I would not have put a literal million dollars on Eighty Days being a debut. This story follows a pilot who wants nothing more than to fly until his path crosses with a thief who has a knack for radio operating. Set in the 20th century where an aviation empire seeks to control every country and citizen in the land, Jay has to find what freedom means for himself, and what he's willing to risk for it. This was a love letter to flight, resistance, and, well, love, and was the kind of book so good that my mind felt wiped after a finished the last page.
I barely know where to start. The story drops you right in the middle of Jay's world, at the beginning of the AVO's quest for domination, but I never felt lost or confused. The world builds itself up around the three main characters, Jay, Sable, and Fix, and weaves around their relationships with the AVO and each other. I loved how genuine they all felt as they developed, made mistakes, and found love. The dynamic art brought everything to life in a way that had my heart in my throat and yes, I sometimes cried just because of how beautiful it all was.
This queer historical romance will sweep you off your feet and take you to the skies, and I can't recommend it enough. Go! Go on! Preorder it! Request it! Get it at your library! Don't make me hit you with a broom!

I really really liked this graphic novel! The story was interesting and the art was beautiful. It follows a pilot and a communications expert as they resist the power of the AVO, a transnational organization that has replaced most of the government. Jay and Fix and Sable were all excellent characters and I enjoyed following their stories. The only reason it's not a 5-star read for me, personally, is that the plot was unwieldy at times and some of the fight scenes were hard to follow. I actually had to double-check at one point if I was coming into the middle of a series by accident, but nope, it is indeed a standalone. It's decently long, but the amount of ground covered could easily have filled two or three full books instead of one, because it just has so many pieces. The world-building is solid and I would be interested in seeing more of this universe, but I kept getting lost. I understood the bare bones of the story and the art was beautiful enough that I almost didn't mind the confusion, but the pacing and plot could've either been polished more or expanded into multiple books. Overall, I wish I could have more of this, because it feels like it would make an excellent TV show or expanded BOOM! series so that we could enjoy more of this sprawling world.
Let’s start with a confession: I was obsessed with this book since the moment I saw the cover reveal. I had no idea what it was about, nor I needed to. “Can love outfly the shadow of war?”, it said, but I was absorbed by the strokes, and the colour.
And then, I got the opportunity to read it, and I fell hard for the characters: Jay was mysterious and silent, but you could see his heart pounding in each page; Fix was so quirky and so courageous, you knew he was destined to something big. And they were surrounded by such amazing secondary characters as well, all fleshed with a few of those amazing strokes that got me from the beginning.
I am really looking forward to recommending it to everybody who is in need of an adventure.

This is a really neat graphic novel. I liked the story about resistance of a brutal regime. I wish there was a little more exposition as to how & why they got so bad. It seemed like they were just a guild and then a world dominating power in like, 50 pages. The only way I could really tell they were bad guys was the Nazi-esque uniforms. I just wish it had some more substance as to how they got so bad. Some of the fight scenes were a little blurry and hard to process. The love story was cute, they were an adorable couple. Their names were a little cheesy. Corvidae (the classification for the raven family of birds) for flying and Vulpin (the classification of foxes) for a thief. Fix was a weird name. Didn't get used to that one. The random Italian was interesting. I was glad it came with a happy ending.
An absolutely beautiful graphic novel! I loved the artwork. It took a short while to get into the story at first, but it becomes very intriguing very quickly, and then I couldn't put it down. The romance is gradual and sweet, and I loved the different protagonists and side characters we met through out. The artwork really is the stand out aspect of this book, but I also enjoyed the gathering tension of the plot. It's told in four parts, and each of them had a distinct mood. The ending is wonderful - there's a lot of action and great payoff for the themes interwoven throughout the four parts. A really terrific graphic novel. Thank you NetGalley and Archaia for the opportunity to read an ARC.
I've love to read and give feedback on this but I cannot open the book in the sole method it's available.
This book was really nice. The plot, the romance, but the art tho. It was beautiful. The story follows our main character Jay who is a pilot and secretive Fix. I binged it in one night. 4,5/5⭐

Wow, this was kind of amazing and completely blew me away? The story drops you into a world slowing being overrun by an aviation company that felt like the magic and wonder of a Ghibli movie. Told in four parts, moving between the points of view of our three main characters, this is a story about love, about war, about friendship, about fighting back, about freedom. It's incredible and I'm completely obsessed with Jay, Fix, and Sable. I loved each of their stories and how they remained true to themselves in a world being torn apart by war. I love how they never give in to their oppressors. This is definitely a story everyone needs to check out and fall in love with!

Eighty Days by A.C. Esguerra is a beautiful graphic novel set in the twentieth century in a land where the aviation controls most of the territory, its operations and its citizens. The chance encounter of a pilot and a radio operator will bring about the birth of a resistance front that will fight its oppressors in order to re-establish peace in the continent.
Despite a confusing first part, I really loved this story, the captivating drawings that accompanied it and its charming and complex characters. All three protagonists have very distinct personalities, but they all share one common trait, namely one cannot not love them.
My favourite part of the novel was definitely the relationship between Jay and Fix which was simultaneously central and not the focus of the plot in an effortlessly intricate way who shared that kind of love that led to move mountains for one another.
A.C. Esguerra’s debut is unquestionably a graphic novel everyone should read.
