Stan and Joy Delaney have been married for fifty years. Just like any couple that has been married for that long, they have their ups and downs. They are well known in their community and have recently retired from the tennis school they ran for decades. The four Delaney children have been seeking excellence since childhood, but none of them have been able to find the love their parents share. But then one day Joy sends her four children a cryptic text, and she disappears. Amy, Logan, Troy, and Brooke are completely baffled, and their father has been no help. The siblings are torn, did their father do something to their mother? Or is her disappearance tied to the stranger they invited into their home last year? Either way, the Delaney children are desperate to find their mother.
Apples Never Fall is the latest from one of the most popular authors on the planet. From the outside, the Delaney family looks nearly perfect. Most of the children have successful careers and are still very close. The Delaney children all seem a bit entitled, and that might be just the reason all of them have had relationship struggles. Obviously, there is a mysterious element to the story, but not once was I on the edge of my seat. The ending was almost a letdown. CLICK HERE FOR SPOILERS Even though there is a lot of timeline jumping with this novel, it is fairly easy to keep it all straight. It just isn't as gripping as I had hoped.
Bottom Line - Of course, you should read Apples Never Fall. Liane Moriarty is wildly popular for a reason. However, manage your expectations going into it and you won't be disappointed.

So boring. Rambling characters, a missing parent and a lackluster ending. Skip this one. Nothing like Big Little Lies, which I loved. I want more from her with her newer books because this isn't it.
This was my first read of Liane Moriarty surprisingly. I enjoyed the book, but had a hard time getting into it for some reason. I have been in a bit of a reading slump lately, and this is helping to bring me out as I couldn’t figure out where things were going! Once we got there, I thoroughly enjoyed the ride and think I may pick up another of hers as well.
A suspenseful story of the tangled lies that families tell each other. The writing is great and the book has a creative story. It’s another great read by this author.
In this newest Liana Moriarty novel, the author returns to her original genius and delivers a book that is both heartwarming and keeps you in suspense about how things will turn out in the end. Everyone in the Delaney family is a tennis master. Growing up with parents who ran a tennis club will do that to you. Each member of the family is intensely competitive on and off the court, including trying to figure out what has happened to their mother who has been missing for weeks without a word. Did she run away? Did their father kill her? Does the strange woman who showed up at their doorsteps months ago have something to do with it? Alternating between each family member’s perspective and going back and forth pre and post disappearance, the author delivers a gem of a book! Highly recommend.
I love Liane Moriarty, but this just didn't hold my interest. Too many characters, and I wasn't very invested.
Fans of Moriarty will be delighted. Despite the tennis theme, the heart of her work is still the complex choreography of human nature and the score there is still LOVE.
I just finished Liane Moriarty's newest, and I am happy to report that it is a fantastic return to what I have always expected from her - rich family connections, interesting characters, a page-turning mystery, and a relevance to our own every day lives.
Liane Moriarty is always a hit in my book! Sometimes stories take a bit to get into, but this was certainly not one of those! I was hooked from page one. Well done!
I've been a fan of Liane Moriarty's for a long time, and this title didn't disappoint. Her characters are always well developed and the plots draw you in. Always look forward to her books.
First, let me say that I Love Liane Moriarty. The Love Affair started with The Husband’s Secret. Then on to Big Little Lies. I was let down with Nine Perfect Strangers, and I am sorry to bring it up, but I was unsure if this would be a new favorite, or another book that made me sad.
Apples Never Fall is about a family whose lives revolve about tennis. There is a Lot of tennis in this book, a little too much for my taste. When mom disappears, the story turns to watch could have happened to the matriarch. The family does not know what to do, or rather, the kids are not sure. Could dad have something to do with mom’s disappearance? He does look like a good suspect. But how could that be? They are the family everyone thinks are pillars of the community and a “perfect” family. In reality they are anything but. The kids are beginning to wonder if their father could be to blame for the disappearance of their mom. Or could it be something else they have overlooked all this time?
I was not crazy about all the tennis in this one, but I did like the book overall and finding the ending to the mystery. It was satisfying in the end, but this was a very slow burn for me. I had to start it over several times because in the beginning I could not jump right in. I would not say this is a book that gets me over Nine Perfect strangers, but it is making me believe in one of my favorite authors again.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and Netalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Once I picked this book I couldn't put it down - it's Liane Morarty at her absolute best! A mix of a family mystery, missing person, who done it guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat
I did NOT love this one. And I have loved all of Liane Moriarty's previous books. I finished it but I found it drab at best.
I love Liane Moriarty books and while this one isn’t one of my favorites by her I did enjoy it. I love a family drama and this book has a lot of it. It had me guessing what would happen and like most Moriarty books I was constantly changing my mind about different characters and how I felt about them.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced eARC of Apples Never Fall.
As an avid Liane Moriarity fan, I have been anticipating a new release for quite some time and had high hopes. Apples Never Fall follows the Delaney siblings as they try to figure out where their mother is, if she is okay, and if they should be suspicious of their father.
This was not my favorite of Moriarity's novels.
I loved Moriaty’s other stories but this one I struggled to finish. The story dragged on until almost 3/4 of the book and I only finished it to find out what happened to Joy. Not sure I’d recommend it.
Apples Never Fall tells the story of the Delany family. When their mom goes missing, the four grown siblings start reexamining their shared family tennis history. I’ve like Liane Moriarty for a long time - like I think I read Three Wishes in college. Anyways, I keep reading her new books hoping they will be as good as her older books, but they just aren’t. I liked Apples Never Fall, but I was a little disappointed in in because it wasn’t Big Little Lies good. I mean it’s a page turner - but it just kinda ends.
Thanks to @NetGalley and Henry Holt & Company and Macmillian Audio for my ARC!
I really wanted to love this story but I felt it was slow at the beginning. This book really picked up about 3/4 of the way into it and then I was hooked. Thanks you for the advanced reader copy of this book.
Liane Moriarty is one of my favorite authors so I was really excited to read her newest book. It took me a while to get through this one and several times I thought about abandoning it. It was really hard to get into the plot and invest in the characters. The story was drawn out longer than it needed to be. I did decide to keep reading to find out what happened to Joy and to learn more about the mystery girl, Savannah. If you are a fan of Liane Moriarity or tennis you might like this book, otherwise I would skip it.
I may be the only person on the planet who had never read anything by Liane Moriarty. Having read and LOVED Apples Never Fall, I realize I truly didn't know what I was missing. Her characters are believable. Flawed, but sympathetic characters are hard to write and she does it particularly well. She wrote marriage, sibling relationships, and parent-child relationships incredibly realistically in Apples Never Fall. And while the villain was certainly villainous enough, even that character could at times be sympathetic. While this was my first Liane Moriarty read, it will certainly not be my last. I want to read everything she has written now!
