I listened to this novel on audio. It follows three couples on a destination wedding in a Portugal villa. This book was all drama, too much in fact. The characters were a mess! If it wasn't for the narration, I would have lowered the score. Not my favorite suspense. Thank you, Netgalley, for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Three couples, "friends" if you will, travel overseas for the wedding of two of the friends only to discover that everyone is hiding a secret or participating in an affair of some sort. As tumultuous secrets come to light, someone winds up dead, and lives are shattered beyond repair.
Unfortunately, this one was not a hit for me. While I enjoyed Jones' The Other Woman, I just couldn't find myself caring enough about these characters to keep them straight or put together who was sleeping with who. Basically, this was a novel of affairs and it just wasn't appealing to me. I will definitely keep my mind open for the author's next book, though, as I love her writing style.
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for review.
This is one of those stories that takes a lot of lead up to get to the action. Lots of background stories and drama amongst friends, then the suspense begins. Overall, I enjoyed the characters and plot line.
Amazing book. I loved the characters and the dynamics that were at play. You were able to really know each character and that helped to pull you into this story. Each character was fleshed out and had a district personality! An entertaining book that kept me interested and listening! I really enjoyed this audiobook!
I love Sandie Jones but I think this story was a difficult audiobook because of the many characters. I did like the plot and the huge surprise at the end!
The audiobook narrator Clare Corbett did a good job keeping me invested in the storyline. Rachel is the main point of view and it was difficult at times to keep all the characters separate. Was Rachel just being paranoid about Ali, or was Ali really as much of a threat as Rachel assumer her to be?
I was expecting more of a murder mystery or suspense but this book is really more focused on the relationships and drama between the main characters. The "fatal misunderstanding" referred to in the book synopsis does not occur until very late in the book. It was still a very quick and engaging story, and all the secrets and lies did keep me listening to the very end.
I loved the seaside setting of the book and could easily imagine the wild cliffs and the huge waves surrounding the villa. There are many twists in this book and the shocking conclusion was worth the wait. If you love family drama and a contemporary setting, you will enjoy this one. I absolutely loved the author's earlier book 'The Other Woman' and look forward to reading more from Sandie Jones.

A group of friends meets up in Portugal for the wedding of Ali and Will. Ali is the newest addition to the friend group and it’s clear from the start that the other women are not thrilled by her. Rachel is the focus of the story and from the beginning it’s clear she has concerns about her husband’s fidelity and is eyeing Ali with concern. I really enjoyed the push and pull amongst these characters, none of whom are entirely likable, which actually serves the story quite well. The events move steadily forward, gradually increasing the tension, until the slightly outrageous climax of the book. I felt there was a slight ambiguity to the ending, which I liked. I found this to be an enjoyable thriller, and I would definitely pick up a Sandie Jones book again. Oh, and I LOVE this cover! It’s gorgeous. Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Old friends from college and their spouses. A family wedding on a cliff top in Portugal. Catching up. Meeting a new addition to the family. It should be a wonderful trip, right? ..... Right? It might have been....if secrets had stayed secret. But, hidden truths just have this strange knack of coming into the light at the most wrong times.
I can sum this story up in one word. Twisted. OMG -- there was so much going on in this story right from the start and so many twists, turns and reveals, that it ended up being a total binge read for me. I'll be honest -- the characters in this book are a total train wreck. But I couldn't look away.....
I started out reading an ebook review copy...then got a review copy of the audio book as well. This story riveted my attention in print and audio both. The audio book is narrated by Clare Corbett and runs 10.5 hours long. Corbett does a great job of voice acting. She brought the horribly unlikable characters to life.
The ending was perfect. The story is disturbing, but the wrap up was oddly satisfying. Karma.
This is the first book by Sandie Jones that I've read. It was such wicked fun that I'm definitely reading more by her!
**I voluntarily read a review copy -- and listened to a review audio book -- of this story. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.**
Overall, I gave the book 3.25 stars
This book wasn't that enjoyable, it was highly predictable and most of the characters were quite annoying. The only surprise was the very end of the book.
The character development wasn't really there. None of the main characters changed, only a few of their opinions. It did have a good atmosphere to it at least.
This book also was quite illogical, the things that happened just weren't that believable.
Really the best thing about this book was the setting/atomosphere. The island was a great setting since it kept the characters isolated.
Three couples, close friends, family, and a destination wedding. What could go wrong??
I thoroughly enjoyed this suspenseful tale about the secrets interwoven between Rachel, Jack, Noah, Paige, Will, and Ali. This really was soap opera like with the drama around paternity and the cheating storyline ... and I am here for it!!
Clare Corbett's narration was superb and had me engaged from the first word. The twist in the end, and how it was executed, really surprised me and I actually clapped when the book ended.
Bravo Sandie and Clare!!!!!
Thanks to Netgalley, Sandie, and MacMillan Audio for an advance audio copy of The Guilt Trip.
College friends Rachel and Noah are more or less each other's 'one that got away' and while this is something they've always known and acknowledged, it is not information they have shared with their spouses, Jack and Paige. Now the four of them will come together in Portugal for Jack's brother's wedding to the wild girl known as Ali.
After joining up, the group gets off to a rocky start; Ali isn't quite fitting in the way Will had hoped, Noah and Jack are nitpicking at each other, and then the secrets start to come out. A twenty year friendship tainted with the potential of romance, a wedding weekend, meeting new friends and family members, alcohol, what could possibly go wrong??
Off the bat, I'd like to say something about this book that I rarely say about thrillers: Sandie Jones painted a perfect picture. A lot of thrillers can be atmospheric in an uncomfortable or creepy way, but this was atmospheric in a beautifully described way. Sandie really had me feeling like I know what the Portuguese coast looks like with my own eyeballs.
It's always difficult to listen to a standalone audio with a lot of characters. I did spend a lot of the time confusing who is who and not having a physical book in front of me to check back or have tabs made it difficult to follow along. The bottom line is all the characters are pretty shitty people. I did enjoy the back and forth of the characters, the repertoire between them was entertaining.
The characters are a bit of a 90210 tangled mess - even though Noah and Rachel almost had something, they've remained good friends and Rachel is Noah's wife's best friend. Rachel's husband has ties to his brother's fiancé. Very soapy and good.
However, despite enjoying the backstory, I felt like the lead up took a tad too long to get to the climax and would've enjoyed a little more time to savor the undoings.
After finishing this, I had to sit down and think about what the hell it was I just read. There was so much drama jam packed into the last 10% of the book that my head was spinning. I'm even tempted to go back and reread the last few chapters because it felt like it happened so fast. This is both good and bad because the ending was so thrilling that it absolutely saved the book for me, however it shouldn't have had to. I felt like most of this book was leading up to the one big, dramatic event where everything crashes down. The rest of the book kind of just felt like development and a lot of filler and I wish we had gotten a bit more drama and twists revealed earlier. Just as I thought I was going to lose interest, the drama started to ramp up. It felt like every single person was connected in some way, which can make for a great story but can also get quite confusing. It was easy to keep everyone straight thankfully but I did have to go back a few times to pick up key details. Overall, I thought the shocking ending really saved an otherwise pretty slow book. I would consider this more of a slow-burn domestic thriller. I look forward to reading more from Sandie Jones as I have enjoyed all of the ones I've read so far.
Another first time author for me. I listened to the audio version of this and the narrator was fine. It probably added a bit of realism with the narrator having a British accent. I've said it before, I enjoy reading books and getting to see things from a different cultural perspective - trainers and car parks are something you don't see in American books..
Regarding the book - the start to this story is challenging. The author is definitely trying to set a certain scene and goes about it fairly heavy handily. Yes, we get it....no one likes Ali.
This story is told from Rachel's POV and boy oh boy does this woman go back and forth with her fears regarding her husband. Unfortunately, her inner monologue gets to be quite a bit much. Near the end I started to skim and when that happens with ANY book, that is not a good sign.
Did I guess the twist? Actually, I did. Probably not for the right reason though. I remembered that I read a similar book about a year ago that was almost EXACTLY the same. 3 couples went on vacation together and rented a house.....the twist was the same as well.
One more thing. The ending...the very end - it was extremely confusing. I had to read the last chapter a couple of times to figure out what the author was trying to say. Next time, maybe try not to make things so confusing and it might be a little beneficial for the reader.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to this ARC. The opinions above are mine and mine alone.
I really wanted to love this book. I think if the story would have been written a little differently, I would have. For me, it would have worked if Ms. Jones had written it starting with the hospital after the accident, with Rachel slowly remembering events of the weekend from there while the police investigate the crime. I think this would have built some nice tension and made it a real page turner.
Instead, after the intriguing Prologue, Ms. Jones tells the story serially from the beginning of the destination wedding weekend, with a strong start and a strong finish, but it did drag a bit in the middle. “The incident” (as the officer refers to it in the Prologue) doesn’t take place until almost the end of the book. It’s a long journey to get there, and then the ultimate revelations and resolutions felt rushed.
I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed the narrator, Clare Corbett. Ms. Corbett does a great job voicing the different characters, and making Rachel come to life through her portrayal.
I liked the complex relationships the characters had with each other, and the clues that Ms. Jones dropped along the way as Rachel tries to figure out if the suspicions she has towards her husband are legitimate or all in her head. The Guilt Trip is a fun domestic-noir style read that will keep you wondering who you can trust.
Right off the bat, the friends (Rachel and her husband Jack, Paige and her husband Noah, Ally and Will) are going on a trip to Portugal for Ally and Will's wedding. The first few chapters gave me And Then There Were None/Nine Perfect Strangers vibes... and I was liking it. Once they check in to their villa drama ensues within the group. Did Rachel see Ally running out of Jack's room? Is he cheating on her with the soon-to-be bride? Did Noah lie about the surfing accident? What is going on at the rehearsal dinner? So many questions!!!! This story did take awhile to develop, and once it was in full swing I was sort of getting bored with the whole thing. The ending scenes were hard to believe and the reveal wasn't super great. I gave it three stars on Goodreads because it wasn't an awful book, but I don't think it was the best thing I've read this year.
Thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for allowing me to read/listen to this one.
Holy pulsating jaw Batman. (This phrase is used a lot lol) The inner dialogue is hard to read at times.
Overall good story line.
Audiobook Review: When I started listening to this book I had already read the eBook version so I thought I knew what was going to happen. What I realized that by just reading and not actually hearing the words I missed some emotions and reactions of the characters. Clare Corbett, the narrator, did an amazing job of taking the thriller of a story and bringing it to life with her tone and cadence. My attention was easy to keep and I found myself looking for times to listen to more.
eBook Review: I love a good thriller. Sandie Jones wrote a book that pulled me in from the beginning, kept me turning pages, and loving every word she wrote. I loved the twists, the turns, the ups, and the downs. I followed the characters exactly where they wanted me to go, I may have missed some clues, but I still had many guesses as to what was going to happen next.
The beginning introduced a lot of characters in a short timeframe, and I have to admit that I had a hard time keeping them all straight, especially who was with who. As I continued to read, I realized that may have been done intentionally. It seemed each character had a tie to another character and it was fun to figure out who was doing what with who and when.
I enjoyed Sandie Jones’ book. The characters were twisted, fun, and relatable. This is a perfect, fun, twisted suspense, mystery, and thriller.
Thank you, NetGalley, for an audio-ARC of The Guilt Trip by Sandie Jones.
The Guilt Trip is a story about three couples, six friends, that spend a weekend in Portugal for a wedding. As the characters intertwine, so do their relationships. Questions of fidelity and friendship are on the line, but the reader is left without knowing who to trust. Sandie Jones pursued every possibility in identifying the unfaithful couple but left me feeling that it was all too much. Too much drama and too many twists and turns.
This book seemed liked it was meant for me, but ended up being the complete opposite.
My biggest complaint was with the assumptions and miscommunication. I would have (and do) expect better from adult characters. For the love of God, just have an grown up conversation! All the drama was way too high schoolish for me; the characters were extremely unlikable; the ending was totally unrealistic; and there were several things that didn’t make sense to me (how did Ali’s mom get down the stairs and across the beach to the wedding venue in her wheelchair, for one?)
The judgmental treatment of Ali by both Rachel and Paige was an immediate turnoff, as was the slut and fat shaming.
The best thing about this book was the audio narration by Clare Corbett.
4.5 stars for me. I did enjoy this book and it was a fast read for me. I did guess the twist but did not expect the ending and thats always good. This is my first book from Sandie Jones and I have already added all of her other books to my tbr list. Guys this is a great read!
The title is probably a play on words as six friends head to Portugal for a destination wedding and find themselves knee deep in secrets. This story provides all the drama of a soap opera without the commercials.
Rachel, married to Jack, tells the story throughout. Her long-time best friend, Noah is married to her newer best friend, Paige. The bride and groom to be are Jack’s brother, Will, and his fiancee Ali. The story begins at the airport where Ali has lost her passport. We believe Ali makes trouble and causes confusion wherever she goes, so tend to easily believe the absolute worst about her.
One thing I found annoying about Rachel was that she allowed herself to believe mental rumors and take them to illogical conclusions rather than fact-checking. But she had secrets and insecurities of her own, so I tended to sympathize with her as she meandered her way through secrets as they were revealed.
The explanation for Ali’s behavior took me by surprise, but was completely credible. Overall I enjoyed this book and the main characters Ms. Jones presented. This audiobook was narrated by Clare Corbett who did a fantastic job with distinct voices and expressions. I will definitely read more of Sandie Jones and will look for other audiobooks narrated by Ms. Corbett.
Many thanks to #NetGalley, Macmillan Audio and Sandie Jones for providing an advanced review audiobook. The opinions expressed are my own.
