is my most recent #ALC provided by @macmillan.audio for review. As this stunning cover shows, much of this story takes place #cliffside. Three couples head to a beautiful cliffside villa in #Portugal for a wedding. The dramatic backdrop however cannot rival the drama that ensues as tensions and suspicions swell higher than the sea crashing the rocks below.
I stayed up until 2am because i HAD to hear the ending of this book which was shocking and highly satisfying at the same time! If you have your pick of things to read, pick this one up first!! Also, huge props, #asalways to @macmillan.audio for doing a bangup job on the audiobook!
This book was so much fun to listen to with a full cast acting out this awesomely devious story! Many thanks again to @macmillan.audio @minotaur_books, @stmartinspress, @netgalley and the author for the opportunity! Pick this up as your very next read!!
Three couples. A destination wedding. An affair.
Will and Ali are set to wed at a gorgeous Portuguese villa. Invited are Will's brother Jack and his wife Rachel, along with their friends Noah and Paige. Rachel and Noah are best friends since college days and Jack had once employed Ali and in turn introduced her to his brother Will. In a jumble of suspicions and confusion the weekend unfolds to a crashing end.
Who loves who? Who is having an affair? Who is telling the truth?
The audiobook of The Guilt Trip was marvelous! The narrator had me gripping my seat at wanting to know how it was going to end. The ending did have me pondering what really happened, however I sometimes like that in a book :)
I would definitely recommend this book, especially the audio version.
Thank you NetGalley for the advanced listening copy.
If you are a fan of marriage dramas then I definitely recommend this book. I was expecting a thriller/mystery but it seemed to mostly be about who was sleeping with who amongst the 3 couple in the book.
Thank you Netgalley and publisher for the audio ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I've been reading Jone's books since her debut. And what I always like about her books is the twistiness and fast paced, plus the horrible people that do horrible things to each other. Oh and you never know who is the bad one till the end. Even if then.
This book was exactly that - quite a lot of people who seem good and nice, but really aren't and have a lot of secrets to hide from each other.
There's a destination wedding that brings all these people together. But we follow Rachel on this trip. She dislikes the bride, Ali who is marrying Rachel's brother-in-law. She thinks Ali is too out there, too obnoxious, too self assured. There was a line in the book - she was a man's woman, not a woman's woman. So as you can tell, lots of female jealousy and rivalry.
To add fuel to the fire, Rachel has suspicions that Ali and her husband Jack are actually sleeping together. But as we get closer to the big day, we find out that Rachel has secrets of her own. So who is going to end up hurt in the end?
The audio was excellent and easy to follow, but for the most part it wasn't action filled. It literally was a story of who slept with whom, and finding all that out in a beautiful location. Nothing new, but it kept me entertained on many rides this week as I really wanted to see who was the best lier in this book.
Thank you to Minotaur Books and Netgalley for my audio advance copy of the book.
This one left me twisting and turning and trying to figure out who was who most of the time. It was like a soap opera destination wedding with too many plots going on. Overall I enjoyed it once I figured out what was happening but it took too long. Maybe if I had this one in print or kindle it would have been better than my preferred audio but the audio narration was great.
✨THE GUILT TRIP✨
★★★★☆
🍊Drink: Port and Tonic
- Fill a glass with ice
- Pour 4 oz Fevertree Tonic Water
- Add 2 oz white port
- Slice an orange wedge and give it a little squeeze into the drink, then take the peel and rub it around the rim of the glass and drop it in!
First of all, Happy Pub Week to The Guilt Trip by Sandie Jones!
(Thank you to @minotaur_books and @netgalley for my gifted copy)
I knew what drink I was going to make for this read before I was even halfway through the book! The Port + Tonic is the perfect summer drink - I tried it for the first time this year on my birthday and immediately fell in love. It’s a classic Portuguese apéritif - light and refreshing, with a hint of orange to balance out the bitterness of the tonic water.
This story is set in Portugal where a group of three couples travel for a destination wedding… and everything goes terribly wrong.
The British couples are constantly on the hunt for a Gin + Tonic to drink away their awkwardness and suspicions, but have no luck, so they always get stuck with a different drink - which is why I wish I could have been there to make them this Portuguese Tonic as a substitute 😂
🌟 Review: I flewwww through this book, I had to finish it because I needed to know what happened. It was very reminiscent of Lucy Foley’s “The Guest List”, and so I predicted the ending almost right away. Part of me wishes there would have been a little bit of a different twist, but part of me is glad it ended the way I thought it would. It definitely kept me on the hook - I thought the character development was great, and I loved seeing things through Rachel’s eyes. I wish the ending was a little more spread out because it all happened so fast and suddenly!
I also loved the author’s note at the end - because yes, we all need to appreciate the Allie’s in our life!
Sandie Jones never fails to deliver an entertaining psychological suspense with a plethora of surprises and this is no exception. This worked really well on audio as it had a nice flow to it and the narrator’s acting skills are excellent. The way things appear at the beginning are no at all how they turn out to be in the end. This is fast-paced and an absolute pleasure to read.
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* this was a pretty good read with a lot of stuff going on, really liked the twists in this, good version of the more common "wedding party to funeral" theme
By the end of this one, I was super invested and couldn’t wait to see what happened next… but it took me a little while to get there. The first part of the story was slower with lots of entangled character details. Some parts felt dragged and filled with what seemed like lots of extra detail. By the time I hit halfway, it picked up the pace with some unforeseen twists… that really intrigued me. All of those extra details actually built up the plot twists. This story gave me all THE GUEST LIST vibes and at times I started thinking, is this one inspired by that story line? Overall i liked the story, especially the major twists I didn’t predict. The ending left me with some lingering questions and felt like a cliffhanger but also wondering what just happened.
This book is full of drama that bored me so much that I had to speed the book up in order to get through it! I'd like to think if I were in Rachel's shoes that I would ask some questions instead of allowing my paranoia and over-active imagination to continue ruling my life. When it came time to reveal what was really going on I felt like it was drug out for too long with half truths and innuendos and I almost lost my interest in the book all together.
What I did like about this book: The main character is a 42 year old woman and she touches briefly on the topics of aging and worthiness, both of which I could relate to. Also, the subject of bullying came up and I thought the author handled that subject very well.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the advanced audiobook copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I had a chance to listen to The Guilt Trip by Sandie Jones and it was full of surprises! When three couples travel for a wedding, Rachel and Jack, Noah and Paige and the bride and groom to be, Will and Ali, none of them ever imagined what was to come. Friends and family, they travel for Will’s destination wedding to Ali and almost immediately everything seems off. Right from the start, we realize not everyone is telling the truth. Add in some suspense and you have a gripping story from start to finish.
Happy listening!
No lie (I am the only one not lying here) my head is spinning from the wild crazy ride that is The Guilt Trip by bestselling author Sandie Jones. Six people, three couples, two newlyweds and at the end one dead body does not make the math any easier in figuring out who is lying, who is truthful and who is a murderer.
Rachel and Jack have been married for 20 years. They are joining Jack's brother Will at a Villa on the cliffs of Portugal for his destination wedding to Ali, a former employee of Jack's, along with Rachel's oldest friend Noah and his wife Paige who has become best friends with Rachel. Nice and cozy right? WRONG! These are six people who are way too involved with each others lives, wives and husbands. None of them have lines they do not cross.
The author has made them all unreliable narrators and it is hard to root for any of them. Though I will say some lie to protect others but the other half lie to protect themselves. Everytime I thought I knew the truth I was blindsided but it made for a climatic reveal.
The brilliant narrator Clare Corbett was able to juggle multiple conversations. I always knew who was talking because of the very distinct accents and tones she created for each definable character. Though Ali was way to whiny it did mesh with her personality.
In the end two people were cheating, two people wished they had been with the other and two people really did love each other. It all added up to a WTF guilty conclusion.
I received a free copy of this audiobook from the publisher via #Netgalley for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.
This is a complex story about a group of friends and the choices they make. It’s a bit of a soap opera type of novel. Lots of complexities and drama, mystery and intrigue, but also a lot of nonsense. It’s a 3 for me because so much of it is too far out there for me. Parts are just not believable because who would do the things that these people do! Thanks to NetGalley for the read.

When Rachel travels to Portugal for her brother in law’s wedding, she has no idea her life will be forever changed. Three couples lives intertwine in numerous ways, and shocking secrets are revealed, ultimately resulting in a tragic accident. Or, was it done on purpose?

💭 Thoughts 💭
This book focused a lot on the dynamics between the characters and was very psychologically twisty. Rachel was a very unsure narrator who was easily swayed by new information. I enjoyed the twists and how all of the characters weren’t exactly who they seemed to be. However, parts were repetitive throughout and the ending left a lot to be desired. It was too vague and left me confused and questioning what exactly happened and who was at fault was unclear.

The descriptions of Portugal sounded amazing! From the beautiful ocean side house with an infinity pool and rooftop jacuzzi they stayed in, to the wedding location on the side of a cliff, every view sounded breathtaking!

🎉 Theme Ideas 🎉
The night before the wedding the characters enjoyed a Mediterranean style charcuterie board including salami, Serrano ham, French cheeses, and olives. Enjoy al fresco, bonus points if you have an ocean view!
Loved this one! This was my second book by this author, and most definitely my favorite of the two!
It's full of drama, secrets, and twisty until the last sentence!
The story takes place at a destination wedding, where not all the attendants will make it home. Lots of assumptions based on the main character's thoughts and you don't find out all the truths until close to the end.
I loved the setting, some of the characters lol, and the last twist!
I love Sandie Jones so I was very excited to listen to this book! This follows a group of friends that go away for a wedding and there's lots of suspicion and accusations among the couples and their possible "cheating" ways.
I felt there was a lot of discussions between characters to keep straight and I wasn't a fan. I disliked Jack from the get go. I think I enjoyed this more in audio format vs. book.
The narrator was great. This book was fine. I figured out the twist about 1/2 way through. I didn’t see the twist at the end but figured it out pretty quick after the incident. Would I recommend it? Depends on if you’ve read a lot of thrillers or not.
Thank you to the Publisher, Netgalley, & Macmillan Audio for the advanced listener copy. All opinions expressed are my own.
I am still in the midst of listening to my audio ARC from Netgalley. Sandie Jones has hit the mark with this story. She does a great job with characters and the plot. The only downside is the narrator. Her voice reminds me of nails on a chalkboard, particularly when she attempts to make a grown woman sound exactly like a spoiled toddler. Seriously, we readers are astute enough to pick up the nuances and the obvious on our own. This would be a five-star review if not for the narrator.
3.5 stars
I listened to this audiobook which enhanced the experience of this story. It definitely had a soap opera vibe with a love quadrilateral going on. I would have enjoyed it more if Rachel's inner monologue about the possibility of Jack's cheating and her own guilt over a long-ago tryst hadn't gone on and on and on. I also felt that it ended quite abruptly and very out of character for one of the men.
