Thank you to St. Martin’s Press for providing me either an eARC and to Macmillan Audio for providing me with an ALC in exchange for my honest review. This book is out now!
CW: fatphobic language, fat-shaming, mention of miscarriage, car accident
This was the first book by Sandie Jones. I went into this one with somewhat high expectations based on the fact a previous novel of hers was picked as a Reese’s Bookclub pick.
I don’t have much to say about this one. I was pretty bored for about 85% of this book. I didn’t care much for the characters, but not in an I-want-to-keep-reading-because-I-hate-the-characters kind of way if that makes sense.
I switched between an ebook and an audiobook with this one. I did enjoy the narrator but I still wasn’t vibing with the book. I don’t know. I didn’t really care much for this one, but this might be the book for you!
This book was my least favorite from Sandie Jones. It started off very slow. A little confusing in the beginning with the six characters. Great audiobook narration. Some of the plot twists were a little predictable but still had me wanting to read more. The ending was little unrealistic. The book was just ok for me.
Thank you Netgalley for the advanced copy.
The Guilt Trip by Sandie Jones. I still haven’t quite decided about this audiobook read by Clare Corbett. She did a good job with the material. There were six main characters with multiple interactions, two married couples, a couple about to get married, some exes, two brothers and two best friends . I had to make a chart, no kidding.
Whoever you think are the good guys and the bad guys, you will probably be wrong. Everyone is at least annoying, some are really bad and some are worse than just bad. Not badly written, just not really my cup of tea.
Thanks to Netgalley.
Bummer review ahead...
This audiobook was confusing with so many different characters. Six people. Three couples. So many names flying around that I had to make a chart of who was married to whom. (And who was screwing whom).
Unfortunately, this uber dramatic story did not hold my attention. The characters were quite unlikable.
But I stuck it out so I could find out what happened at the end. It was OK, but mostly forgettable.
Sorry for the negative feedback, Minotaur Books and MacMillan Audio. Even though I'm grateful for the chance to listen to the advanced listener copy.
I thoroughly enjoyed THE GUILT TRIP, a twisty, fast-paced, surprising thriller about three couples traveling to Portugal for a destination wedding. This story pulled me in and was completely entertaining, start to finish. I'd recommend this for Sandie Jones' fans, or fans of Lisa Jewell, Tana French, or other thriller writers. The audiobook was very well narrated and great to listen to.
I kindly received the ARC of this audiobook from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
I found that there was so many characters. It took me 3/4 of the book to understand who was who and 80% that i started getting into it. There was drama but it was just a little bit of drama. This book was not for me.
Thank you Netgalley and macmillan audio for this ARC.
This is actually one of the better audiobooks that I have heard. The narrator really does a great job with all of the characters without feeling like she is playing different characters, or putting on ridiculous sound effects.
Her performance of the novel just adds to the already awesome story.
What a fun ride! The characters were really well written, the atmosphere was perfectly described and the tangled web of relationships was well explained. There were a few things I'd unraveled, but there were still a few surprises, which for me makes for a great mystery. I will seek more from this author and I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good story about friendship, betrayal and destination weddings.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer, you never know they might be one in the same. This book was easy to listen to, not complicated so the characters were easy to follow. Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to enjoy the story.
It is Ali and Will's marriage celebration in a beautiful Portuguese seaside villa. Will's brother Jack is there with his wife Rachel. As well as friends Noah and wife Paige. They all have a history together and it soon becomes very obvious that they are all keeping secrets from each other. Secrets that could sever marriages and end friendships. The premise had all the ingredients for a great dramatic story, but it just didn't work for me. I really wanted to like this book, I really did, but I did not like any of the characters and the constant bickering and accusations was a bit too much. I listened to this book on audio and the narrator's rendition of each character did little to smooth over the dialog. It actually made the characters that more annoying for me. The one thing that saved this novel for me was the ending. I did not expect that at all. Overall, it's not a bad read if you like unreliable characters and a lot of drama.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me with this ARC in return for my honest review.
There's so much good about "The Guilt Trip." ... a destination wedding in Portugal, drama between old college friends, a mysterious newcomer ... but ultimately it falls really flat. The characters are all flat and indistinguishable, and I had a hard time keeping track of who was who. The story felt like "The Guest List" but without as much as action. Bonus points for all the Portugal scenery but I had a really hard time finishing this one. Thanks NetGalley for the audiobook.
I absolutely loved how this book read like a soap opera type drama around a destination wedding as the setting.
It centers around a group of three couples going to Portuguese Villa for a destination wedding. After arriving in their villa in Portugal Rachel begins to discover secrets that have her questioning not only Ali but her husband, Jack, as well. Suspicions arise and rumors start circulating that will test everyone's relationships.
Overall it was an enjoyable book, but not the thriller I was hoping for, more of a domestic drama.
I thought the audiobook was well done, but that was about the end of my enjoyment as far as this book went. The characters in this book were beyond frustrating. They made me want to scream at them. Every single argument in this book could have been solved by people just TALKING TO EACH OTHER. This absolutely felt like a high school soap opera. The plot felt like it was a lot of "well she told me to tell you that he said...." blah blah blah. I wasn't a fan of this one, but the audiobook was at least nicely done.
I enjoyed listening to this audiobook--the narrator was particularly excellent. The story has an appealing setting and premise and there was a lot I enjoyed about the writing, but I did find it dragged quite a lot with endless angst-ridden speculation by some characters about the possible relationships between others, too much stubborn clinging to initial impressions, and lots of jumping to unfounded conclusions. I also found the ending a bit confusing or maybe just a tad anticlimactic; I had to listen to it twice to make sure I hadn't missed something major. Although it wasn't my favorite Sandie Jones book, I did still like it; I just didn't love it. I would give extra points for the cleverness of the title, though! Many thanks to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to this audio ARC. 3 1/2 stars, rounded up to 4
At first, I was unsure about this book. I was graciously given the audio version, and I found it difficult to follow along (many character to juggle). About 60% of the way in, I was hooked! I won’t give any spoilers away, other than WOW, what an ending. You have Rachel and Jack. Paige and Noah. Ali and Will. All along I was on Team Rachel, and up until the end I was as well. Would I recommend this book to others? 100% absolutely yes! Wait until you get to the end, what a ride. Four stars from me.
Thank you Netgalley for this advance copy.
This is a story about three couples who are on a trip in Portugal for a destination wedding. Each one of the characters has some kind of history with another, so they’re all connected by a tangled web. At the end of the trip one of the group members ends up dead and everyone has a motive.
Going into this, I expected a fast paced “whodunnit” that would keep me guessing. What I got instead was a slow burn soap opera. The action doesn’t pick up until about 60% in and then everything seems to kind of come out of nowhere. I would’ve liked more development of certain elements within the story. Also, much of the action is told through character dialogue vs descriptions of it actually happening. There were some really confusing parts and the characters were hard to keep track of in the beginning. Despite this, I still really wanted to figure out what happened and I was engaged throughout the book. This was a solid read for me, but I would’ve liked more thrill and development overall. I listened to the audiobook of this narrated by Clare Corbett, and as always, Corbett’s narration was stunning.
The Guilt Trip is out today! Thank you to @netgalley and @macmillan.audio for an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.
I read this because it is the BN book club choice for August. The author’s previous book was a Reese book club selection so I was pretty excited to read it. I don’t always like books that have a lot of marital drama but this one was great. I kept looking for opportunities to read and finished it within a few days (and that says something with an audiobook that I normally only listen to on the way to work). I look forward to reading another of her books.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC audiobook... I listened to this while commuting, and wished my commute was longer. I was hooked from the very beginning, learning about the characters and their backgrounds. There were twists throughout the book that I somewhat saw coming, but nothing prepared me for the ending.
I loved the setting, and could picture myself there enjoying the ocean and beach house (now I really need a vacation but maybe not ending the way this one does LOL).
This is my 3rd book by Sandie Jones. The Other Woman was excellent and Her First Mistake was great too so I had high hopes for this book and I was not disappointed. I couldn’t get enough of this book and was finding myself make time to listen versus just listening when I had free time.
This isn’t your typical thriller/suspense book that starts off with a murder and you are left trying to figure out the culprit, instead it was about betrayal and who can you trust with your darkest secret and who can you trust out of those who are supposedly closest to you to not betray you especially when you are looking through things through the wrong lens. It made for a much more suspenseful and thrilling book because it is more relatable and believable and Sandie Jones has a knack for writing stories that hit you on that level.
I’m really surprised at the lackluster reviews because after reading new releases from other top of the chart authors and being immensely disappointed, this book was like a breath of fresh air and I cannot wait for her next book.
So so good! Sandie Jones does it again! Just like her first book The Other Woman which ai listened to on audiobooks and loved, The Guilt Trip I also very much enjoyed as an audiobook. Rachel and Jack along with their very best friends Paige and Noah are headed to Portugal for Jack’s brother Will’s wedding. Will fiancé is very much loud and over the top and Jack cannot stand her. We follow the 5 as what was supposed to be a beautiful wedding weekend turns into life shattering events in so many more ways then one.
I loved this book and gave it 5 stars. Thank you Netgalley for the chance to listen to and review The Guilt Trip by Sandie Jones for an honest review.
