I love any Fear street they can do no wrong. This one did not disappoint. I ended up reading this one physically instead of audio.Every time I read a fear street I am transported back to my childhood. No matter how corny the story I love it.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of the book, in exchange for a honest review.
As a lover of R.L. Stine (Goosebumps and all....) This was a no brainer for me when I received the review copy. Loved it for exactly what it was! Reminded me of the old 80's horror movies. Cheesy, teens in love, creepy elements. And having the audiobook version was a score.
Enjoyed it and would recommend it if you are a fan of this author.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillian Audio for the chance to listen to this audiobook. This YA Horror book is a quick , easy read.
I loved being back on Fear Street. This one was as great as the ones from my childhood. Great. Narrator did a great job relaying this story.
How does Catalina deal with a frist boyfriend? She jumps all in. The it turns south fast. She kills him but he's not dead. Or is he? Is she imagining things? What is going on? Definitely kept me intrigued the whole time. I loved goosebumps as a kid and these made me feel back there all over. Although if you use headphones to listen to the audio book make sure you don't accidentally hit someone when they tap you on the shoulder and make you scream. You know because that would be bad.
I didn’t love this book, I didn’t hate this book. I do love RL Stine, and I will read anything and everything I can by him. I recommended this and the others by him I recently got here to my followers. I apologize for the delay in review, I forgot to include my reviews here when I put them other places online.

I enjoyed reading R.L. Stine as a teenager and it would have been nice to have the audio books back then. I'm glad his books are gaining popularity again.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher/author for providing me with an ALC in exchange for my honest review.
This book was exactly what I wanted it to be! I loved it. I will make sure to check out other books by this author. When I requested this I was just intrigued by the concept of it and I loved how it turned out. This story had a great plot and if you have read this and enjoyed it, This was so much. It was such a great story. I would say give this one a try. I will continue to follow this author. Way to go to this author for not letting me down.
I highly enjoyed the narrator of the audiobook. Kept me listening.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an audiobook of The Dead Boyfriend in exchange for an honest review!
2.5 rounded up!
As someone who spent a majority of 2020 & 2021 reading Christopher Pike, I 100% got Pike vibes from Stine's The Dead Boyfriend. We get a whole info dump at the beginning of what the main character looks like; hello every Christopher Pike book ever.
It's not until part two of The Dead Boyfriend that I really started getting into this one. But then the ending kind of came out of left field & pulled me out of the story. For a Fear Street book, this is okay. I'm not here for a masterpiece, just a nostalgic ride.
I try not to dole out single stars but this book is offensively terrible. I know Fear Street isn’t high literature, but they’re usually silly and fun.
A vapid and insufferably stupid first-person main character. A story written through diary entries. An ending pulled out of Dallas, with one last “twist” at the end. Repetitive and weakly-written prose. The phrase “a long sip” which actually stalled my brain for a second because it’s so fucking dumb.
I would rather brush my teeth with broken glass than listen to this ever again.
The narrator was Brittany Pressley and she was competently juggling dog shit.
I received a copy of this audiobook for free from NetGalley and Macmillan Audio in exchange for an honest, voluntary review.
This book features Caitlin who falls madly in love with Blade. Her friends try to talk some sense into her, telling her she is moving too fast, and he cannot be trusted. One night, she cancels a date with Blade and then catches him with another girl. As this is Shadyside, things do not end well for Blade, which makes it disturbing when he comes back to life looking for retribution.
Three words to describe this book: Cardboard. Shallow. Silly.
Cover: I do not like these new covers – they do not tell you anything about what is going to happen. This just has a moody girl in the forefront with a shadowy guy in the fog. I loved the graphic novel covers of the 1990’s!
Character Development: There really is no character development and you know little about the characters beside their name, age, and gender. I wanted more about the characters.
World-Building: This book could have taken place anywhere. There were minimal references to Fear Street or Shadyside history.
Narration: I love this narrator. She has a perfect voice for the Fear Street novels that focus on teenagers. I would definitely listen to something by her again in the future.
Plot & Pacing: This book moves quickly by ending most chapters on a small cliffhanger. The twist at the end was quite gimmicky but did surprise me.
Verdict: Reading these Fear Street reboot books has made me realize that there are some books that are good to leave in the past with fond memories.

I can't even begin to explain how much I really enjoy most of R. L. Stine's books. The Dead Boyfriend is no exception. The story is creepy and one of the few I wasn't able to guess how it was going to end. The Dead Boyfriend is fast-paced and the characters are done very well!
I am fairly certain I read every single R.L. Stine book of the 90s. Goosebumps, Fear Street, etc.... I was excited for the opportunity to read this. But I tried twice and just could not get into it. I switched and ultimately tried all three, but it didn't seem to matter. Since I did not make it past 10%, I did not post a public review. Thank you for giving me the chance.
This brought back so many great memories and good feelings!! I absolutely loved this audiobook and the feelings it gave! Loved it!
This book takes us back to Fear St and the wonderful and creepy world of Shadyside. If you are new to this fictional horror haven then, you are in for a treat! If you are reading this book as an avid Goosebumps fan then you will feel like you just put on your favorite sweater. This story starts out with the lovely Caitlin who is a nice girl from a nice family. She seems like your typical high school girl. Then comes the entrancing Blade and a creepy appearance from Deena Fear and everything goes downhill from there. I did not guess the ending which is always a plus to me, so I am giving this my highest rating for the newer FS novels I have read. I listened to the audiobook version of this and the narration was excellent.
I absolutely love R.L Stine and was super happy to be able to listen to these audiobooks. Narrator wasn't my favorite though, but the story was classic stine.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher, author, and whoever else in case I forgot anyone for the review copy of the audio version of this book. This review, therefore, is for the audiobook version of the story.
If you like the old (or new) R.L.Stine Fear Street stories you should just eat this right up. Now, I’m not talking about the Netflix movies, I’m talking about the books. They are sort of two different worlds under the same roof. Keep them separate as much as you can and just enjoy this for what it is. A good ol’ YA horror story.
In this story, Caitlin has fallen for Blade, an extremely attractive badboy sort who she falls incredibly hard for. Since this is her very first boyfriend her feelings are that much more intense. Then there is that little run in with that strange girl at that party…
Anyway, her friends keep trying to tell her that she needs to relax a bit and that she is taking this relationship way too seriously. She, of course, doesn’t agree and continues on happily. However, one day he cancels a date. When she sees him with another girl, well, let's just say one of them doesn’t walk away and it’s not Caitlin.
Now, this is Shadyside and all so as she panics about being caught it’s soon realized that really that should be the least of her worries. After all, you can’t keep a good corpse down in this town!
This is such a fun book and really just a blast to get into. I’m much older than the YA audience that this might be targeted to but then again, I’m the old school Fear Street reader so there are probably plenty of us that’ll read this for the nostalgia of it all. So, I recommend it to both if you like this sort of book. It’s gory and brutal and so much fun.
Through NetGalley, I scored an audiobook copy of this book. I love the Fear Street Series and this gave me a decent dose of nostalgia. Here’s the thing though - maybe I’m just old because this book was annoying!
The main character was completely unlikable. She came across as your stereotypical mean girl - and I was not a fan. In typical fashion, there are no parents anywhere - which when I read these before I remember it being awesome but now as an adult I find myself saying well sheesh if her parents had their shit together that all could have been avoided - or at least the damage could have been minimized.
Anyway, this reads like an R.L. Stine book, and the series does still have my heart. I just can’t bring myself to rate it poorly, especially considering I know I’m not the target audience.
I used to read Fear Street books back in the 90's and I really liked them and I don't think I read this one back then so when I saw this one was available to review I had to read it.
I read this in 2 nights and I did like it .
The Dead Boyfriend is well written. It kept my attention
A thrilling read. Caitlyn experiences murder, whether accidental or not, firsthand. Or rather, by her own hand... And it comes back to haunt her repeatedly.
Herein between these pages we also meet Deena Fear, from the original Fear family. She doesn't go to the Shadyside high school because she homeschools. By herself. Because her parents are taxidermied in the basement. Deena Fear is someone I want to know more about!
The audiobook was narrated very well; I enjoyed the narrator's voice. Would listen to more by this narrator for sure!
Suitable for: Ages 12 & up (for violence/murder)
