I'm going to preface this review by saying this is the first time I've read a Fear Street novel, or any RL Stine novel for that matter.

As far as the audiobook goes, I thought it was very good. The narrator sounds young without being pitchy, whiney, or otherwise annoying in the way teenagers are. Her voice acting was good, everything was believable on her end, and I enjoyed my listening experience.

As for the actual book, I wasn't a huge fan. First of all, there were just so many misogynistic lines especially in the first quarter of the book whenever Stine discusses any of the female characters appearances. He nitpicks their looks in a way he never describes the male characters with.

The story was also lacking. The ending felt rushed, confusing, and not a satisfying payoff for all the time I spent listening to the book. I thought many aspects to the book were good, but they were none wrapped up nicely.

The narrator is perfect! She’s youthful without being obnoxious. The story is good, I think I just prefer the old fear street books to the new one. But overall worth a listen for fun!

I read three of the Fear Street relaunch books back-to-back-to-back, and of all of them, this was the only one that I didn't just love. I mean, none of them were 5-star masterpieces or anything, but for what they were, they were phenomenal. They were nostalgic and wonderfully angsty, and I just loved them.

This one, though, was weak. And the ending felt rushed and like it was pulled together at the last moment. I love Stephen King. He's one of my all-time favorite authors, but sometimes, he pulls an ending out of his butt that just leaves you wondering why you wasted all that time reading a book in the first place.

I kind of feel like that's what happened here, as well. Maybe Stine took a page from King's book for this one. Maybe the book was just getting too twisty and too turny, and he was like, "Man. I have to end this. I don't know how. ... ... ... OH! I got it! What if I said........."

I always expect Fear Street books to have at least 2 unbelievable twists, and in that respect, this one didn't disappoint, but they didn't work well for me in this instance.

The narrator was great, though. I'm not familiar with her (as far as I know), but they couldn't have picked a better person to narrate the Fear Street books. I hope they keep her for all the follow-up audiobooks.

As far as the other audio-specific stuff - I liked the pacing of the book. It was just right - not draggy or hard to listen to or anything like that. It was well-paced. It also had great sound quality, and I didn't notice any editing mistakes where I had to hear the same line (or page) twice. It was crisp and clear and easy to listen to even driving in the car (which is the ultimate test for me).

I loved reading Fear Street novels when I was growing up, and reading them now definitely gives me some feelings of nostalgia, which I think increased my enjoyment of this book!

The Dead Boyfriend by R.L. Stine is the second book I've read in the Fear Street Relaunch series. I listened to the audiobook, which was 5 hours and 39 minutes in length. The story for this book progressed quickly with lots going on. The narrator did a great job bringing the story to life and giving it the spooky vibes it deserved. The storyline is geared toward a YA audience, but I loved it all the same. The ending of this one came as a surprise. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this audiobook and I would recommend it for fans of YA thrillers and/or those who fondly remember growing up with Fear Street!

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook. This did not affect the contents of my review. All opinions are honest and my own.

The Dead Boyfriend by R.L. Stine is the second book in the new Fear Street audiobook collection that I've listened to. This is the story of Caitlin and her boyfriend, Blade (aka Colin). Caitlin catches Blade on a date with another girl and things quickly go from bad to worse. By worse, I mean she kills him. But he just won't STAY dead...With Deena Fear's help, Caitlin scrambles to figure out how to get rid of Blade once and for all, but it isn't that easy.

There's a fun twist at the end, but this book wasn't quite as engrossing as The Lost Girl, another Fear Street novel. It was a lot of fun and perfect for teens/tweens that like a bit of horror and suspense, though if you're an older listener/reader, I'd probably pass on this one, as the plot and characters aren't very well developed and didn't have much depth. Brittany Pressley once again does a fantastic job bringing the story to life and is a wonderful fit for Caitlin and all of the other various characters. I'd recommend this story to the YA crowd that enjoys a good YA horror novel.

Thanks to R.L Stine and Macmillan Audio for the chance to listen and review this book! I was given this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. #NetGalley

Welcome to Fear Street, again! Pretty sure that we understand the tropes of the Fear Street saga by now, but even R.L. Stine is getting a little loose with his characterization. My god, how quickly these teens go from eyes-meeting-across-a-restaurant to full-blown-in-love. I don't remember my teen years quite like that, but these books are here for idealization and fiction, not reflecting on our own personal awkward teen years. This was another fun installment of the updated R.L. Stine series--I think it worked a little better than the others, as it entered magical-mode with Dina's Fear-family witch powers. Big fan for kids, and so glad the series is being made into movies!

I received this audiobook from Netgalley.

Let me just say, I love RL Stine. I was able to meet him and have four books signed by him. I even cried a little. To meet a childhood idol is so amazing.

This book was very good, I would have probably found it more scary as a child than I did as an adult, but overall I felt it was very well written. It wasn't really predictable in anyway and I could definitely see my kids being scared reading it. I am excited to try the other two by him that I got to see what I think. Recently Netflix released three movies from Fear Street and they were really scary. Sometimes I think scary books translate better to movies. Having said that, I felt the narration was good and the story flowed well. You could see a serious spiral of the main character culminating with a surprise ending and then another surprise ending. The second surprise being a bit more predictable, and leaves you wondering which is the real story.

Fans of RL Stine will not be disappointed.

Pros: very descriptive, the narrator did a great job, the pacing was good

Cons: Both our main character and the moreso antagonist character were kind of equally crazy in my mind. I really didn't care about our lead at the end. I was more interested in the antagonist out of the two characters but I really felt like I should have felt more invested in what would actually happen to our lead.

Unfortunately this installation of the Fear Street series fell flat for me.

This one fell flat for me!

The story follows two girls that are both bat sh*t crazy! One of them became obsessed with Blade (the male love interest) and had an opportunity to date him. The other one becomes obsessed from afar.

When the mc sees Blade with another girl, she freaks out and kills him. They then begin to be haunted by him, and go back and forth with sightings and even trying to bring him back to life.

Something I enjoyed is that the writing is very descriptive which I love while listening on audio! I could easily picture each scene.

Overall I found it extremely repetitive and found myself not wanting to continue listening. The narrator I didn't love but found her voice fit the characters well.

ooooh the creep factor was strong with this one. I really enjoyed The Dead Boyfriend, nostalgia aside this one was really creepy and I think it could make a good movie. The audiobook was really good and made this a quick and fun read that I'd recommend to everyone.

Caitlin has killed her boyfriend in a fit of rage, but instantly regrets it. When Deena Fear tells her she can bring him back from the dead, things go from bad to worse for Caitlin. But come on, can anything go well when a Fear is involved?

Well paced story with several twists and turns I was not expecting, so that made me happy.

Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the review copy.

Pure nostalgic fun!

As a teen, I was a huge fan of the original Fear Street series. I was so excited to see that R.L. Stine was revisiting this world and giving a fresh new spin on this great series.

The Dead Boyfriend is a perfect example of why I loved Fear Street. This book has all the wonderful buildups and creepy vibes, but it also isn't too heavy, which makes it perfect for a younger generation to become introduced to the wonderful world of thriller/horror.

And this book in particular had a great ending! I didn't see it coming and was completely surprised.

I recommend this for old fans, or for young readers interested in something to read that might make them want to sleep with the lights on at night.

4.66 stars
enjoyability 8/10

When Caitlin met Blade, it was love at first sight - to the point of obsession. She is head over heels with him, even though her friends warn her to take it slow and be cautious. One day Caitlin sees him with another girl; the next thing she knows is that he is dead, and it seems like she killed him. But how could it be if she doesn't remember it?

I first listened to The Dead Boyfriend and an audiobook produced by Macmillan Audio for St. Martin's Griffin and narrated by Brittany Pressley. This is my second Fear Street audiobook, and I can't imagine anyone else narrating these books. Pressley is dynamic, does a great job giving unique voices to each character, and emotes tension and suspense superbly.

I am falling in love with Stine's books. They are the right amount of outlandish creepiness, and his world-building is impressive. I feel I'm starting to get to know Fear st. and Shadyside High really well.
The Dead Boyfriend was a crazy ride. I am quickly learning that to enjoy Stine's books, you need to suspend disbelief, and I am OK with it - but for some reason, the central premise of this book is more out there than I anticipated. That being said, the atmosphere more than made up for it. This book was scary (for a younger audience) and very suspenseful.

Disclaimer: I first read it as an ARC. In exchange for an honest review, I am thankful to Macmillan Audio, St. Martin's Griffin, and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of The Dead Boyfriend.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I’ve been a Fear Street fan since the first release back in the late 1980’s so I was thrilled to see these coming out. Once I realized that NetGalley was going to have the audio books I had to jump on them. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance audio book. If you’ve read lots of Fear Street in the past you know how these go. Some are gauged towards girls and some are gauged towards guys. Even though these are high school based I find myself being nostalgic at listening to the stories and hearing about the teenage problems. I highly recommend this audiobook and the book itself.

This book was exactly what you would expect from a Fear Street novel. It hit all the high points and kept me interested the whole way through. The narrator was perfect for Fear Street. She sounded exactly how just about every female Fear Street protagonist sounded in my mind when I was originally reading these books over two decades ago.

All in all, this book was a great trip down memory lane but with a new story to take my down that road. Reading this book has made me very excited to see the new Netflix series.

Growing up in the 90's, I was obsessed with the Fear Street books. I was so excited when I heard about the Fear Street Series relaunch.

Synopsis: Caitlin is a student at Shadyside High School. She has never had a boyfriend, until she meets Blade. They become inseparable, and friends warn her that she might be moving too fast. One night, Blade breaks a date with her, and Caitlin finds him with another girl. This causes Caitlin to lose it and kill Blade....but is he really dead???

Review: I think this would be a great book for a younger reader. I think the book would be considered creepy/spooky to tweens.

Thanks to Netgalley and MacMillan Audio for the ALC.
