Who is a Scientist?
by Laura Gehl

Do you know what an agroecologist is? Until I read this book, I didn't either.
Arriving in the world next week, Who is a Scientist? gives young readers a glimpse into the lives of everyday people and the activities they enjoy. Ordinary people who just happen to be scientists.
Gehl, the author, and a neuroscientist, shares a diverse group of scientists and what they do for a living. From a mathematician to a meteorologist to an astronomer, these occupations are certain to inspire and intrigue children of various ages.
This colorful, clearly formatted book provides 14 examples of people who are scientists, the work they do as scientists, and their hobbies and varied interests. While the information is useful in showing a range of scientific endeavor, the repetitive format becomes less interesting.
I really enjoyed this book. It is simply but efficiently organized. I like how the layout was ordered with the personal photograph and scientist statement first, and then the science photo and other information second. This book will help to humanize scientists and diversify/broaden the representation of scientists children have seen for too long. The flow chart and teacher's guides online are a nice touch. I will be widely recommending this book.
"Who is a scientist?" picks 14 modern-day scientists with each working in different field of study. The book briefly describes each scientist's job.
Of course, When someone says "scientist," all we think is an individual who is stuck in the science lab focusing on the specimens. However, this book portrays that scientists DO enjoy other things apart from working. I love the idea of having their pictures posing with there favorite hobbies.
This book simply educates the readers with types of careers (and their task) in each field of study in science. Ideal to teach children about careers.
Overall, it's a fantastic non fiction book for little readers.
"I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
I love that it told more about the featured scientists and their varied interests. It shows that no one, is just one thing. It also provided a jumping off point to look deeper at some different scientific careers.
Who Is a Scientist? is filled with bright colors and action photos that show present-day scientists at work and at play. Gehl introduces 14 people--from an environmental scientist who surfs to an astronomer who paints--showing readers that being a scientist can mean many things. Readers also learn about different branches of science and the interesting projects that each scientist explores. This book is a great way to discuss careers and showcase the variety of topics that STEM pros can tackle!
This is AWESOME!!! 14 short, accessible profiles of various scientists from all walks of life. I love that this focuses not only on the scientist's work, but also offers detail about them as a person--their likes, hobbies, etc. It really humanizes them and makes it easy for kids to connect to them as possible models for their future.
I also really appreciated that the practical applications of each scientist's work were explained. It didn't just say "neurobiologist" or "meteorologist" but actually explained what the person did and what problems/questions their work was trying to address. This, again, makes it so much more relatable for readers.
This belongs in every elementary library ASAP!
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!
