I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of The Angel Creek Girls, the third novel to feature Detective Kay Sharp of the fictional Mount Chester, Northern California Police Department.
Kay is called to a murder scene. Cheryl Coleman has been stabbed to death, 4 year old Erin is clinging to her body, 8 year old Heather is hiding under the bed and 16 year old Julie is missing. Heather can’t talk and all Erin says is a monster did it, so Kay will have to piece it together herself.
I enjoyed The Angel Creek Girls, which has a relatively unusual premise and solution. It is mostly told from Kay and her partner, Elliot Young’s, points of view with some chapters told from Julie and her captor’s viewpoint. It is an interesting mix, showing the detectives floundering to keep up with what the reader knows from the other side. As the captor is never named before the denouement the mystery of who remains, although why becomes abundantly clear early on. It’s an interesting and unusual motive, although I’m not sure that I buy the practicalities of it.
I think I would have liked this novel even more if it had stuck to the investigation only, as the other voices are a bit of a distraction to what is a good story. I really liked the way Kay and Elliot unravel the case, making intuitive connections and judging what information is useful and what should be discarded. The final showdown is all it should be, tense and action packed although all that slithering about in the mud gave me shudders. Yuck, the mess.
Kay and Elliot are once again dancing around their mutual attraction. It’s time to get a room. Both are good characters with a bit of history and I really like that the author doesn’t define them by it, preferring them to live in the present. What a welcome approach to characterisation.
The Angel Creek Girls is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
I loved this latest edition of the series. Kay and Elliot get placed on separate cases. Both are full of mystery and intrigue. Kay's case is one of the most twisted I have read in a long time. It kept me completely gripped. There is suspense, action, tension, and an extremely slow burning romance that I am completely invested in. The ending left me smiling all the way around. I look forward to the next book!
This book finds Kay chasing psychotic and delusional characters. While the subject is heavy, the story lacks depth. The backstory is shallow and doesn’t carry enough conviction for mass delusion over generations. As a police procedural it’s on the mark. 3.5 stars
An entertaining and enjoyable read.
A well written and twisted mystery full of suspense keeps you turning the pages. I found the chapters from the killer's point of view really showed his warped view of things. I look forward to Kay's next disturbing case.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC.
The Angel Creek Girls is the third book in the Detective Kay Sharp series. I have not read the others and the current story is easy enough to follow. I feel like the characters don’t make the impression they would if you had followed along from the beginning since the book focuses on the case with just glimpses into Kay was in the past. The story catches you up in the suspense quickly as a teenage abduction leads to the murder of her mother. Kay quickly figures out things aren’t what they seem as the family seems to have been ready to leave town before tragedy struck. The ramblings of an elderly woman with dementia puts Kay on a dark path that is decades in the making. Dark and twisted, the story sucks you in and keeps the pages flying by for a ending that still surprises even as you see it coming. My interests are piqued and I will be reading the earlier books in the series. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from NetGalley.
Kay is dealing with some weird whacked out people in the latest installment. A young girl missing, her mother dead, and the other siblings traumatized. Kay has to act fast but the weather is nasty. The scenes with the whacked out people were creepy behind belief. I have to say, there weren't near enough scenes with delicious Elliott in them, his smile and cowboy hat. He's a huge reason I eagerly anticipate the next book. I can't wait to see what next malady befalls the town and if a step will be taken between Kay and Elliott.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for ARC of this book which I have reviewed voluntarily and honestly.
This is the third book of the Kay Sharp series. I really enjoyed this series and this storyline is good enough to quench my drench of suspense. It is very well written with defined characters. Excellent and easy read. The plot is good but just a bit too complicated and crazy. Definitely it's a fast paced and unputdownable thriller book. There was a roller coaster ride filled with surprising twists and turns that had you gripped and hooked. Surely I am looking forward to read the fourth book! Recommend.
This is a cozy mystery to me. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this next to my warm leather and amber scented candle. I read the first two books before this one and they each had me incredibly interested but also just so genuinely relaxed.
Kay Sharp is called to the home where a mother is found with her four year old daughter lying beside her soaked in her mom's blood.
While searching the home, Kay discovers another young girl hiding under the bed traumatized to the point where all the child can do is just stare straight ahead.
There's also the problem of the girls older sister missing.
Julie was apparently targeted by the kidnapper, and the other children were not important to him.
Julie winds up being the last in a string of girls that had disappeared over the course of the last several years leaving Kay in the midst of one of the strangest serial killer families she's ever heard of.
Pro's:
Very well written story, with defined characters and a complex plot line.
Con's:
There were a couple of things that left me saying "What?" and wondering if how they got past the editor and proofreader.
What a ride! Thoroughly enjoy being plopped into Kay Sharpe's life. Intelligent, ballsy, with compassion. Book 3 in the series but you are not lost. It's pouring rain when Kay is called out to a murder. A young girl is missing, her mother is found dead with a little girl beside her. So starts the riveting twisted tale of book 3. You also see the killers point of view, and her partners (Elliott) thoughts. This is one of those books you want the lights on, doors locked and your feet off the floor. This intense read is softened with glimpses of humor and the interest of Kay and Elliott. Along the way we see dysfunctional, delusional, and Alzheimer's. A well crafted tale of murder, mystery and thrills. Thank you Bookouture, Leslie Wolfe and Netgalley for the arc. I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions.
3 - 4 stars.
Leslie Wolfe seems to write so quickly! I read the first book in this series in February (this year) and already I’ve just read the third - I don’t know what happened to number 2. Anyway, the book starts with a rather confronting scene where a widowed mother is killed trying to protect her eldest daughter, 16 year old Julie, from being taken. The two younger girls - 8 year old Heather and 4 year old Erin are hiding upstairs but hear all of this being played out in the kitchen downstairs.
Early the next morning a neighbour calls it in. Detectives Kay Sharp and Elliot Young catch the case. It is very confronting, little Erin is sitting in her mother’s blood cradling her. The neighbours that they interview seem a little off, the old woman seemed to think it was all pre-ordained and the call of the spirit of the earth to some such. But when somewhat distant relatives finally show up to claim the two young daughters of Cheryl they, too, seem a little off! The detectives are even wondering if some sort of cult is involved but Kay, who is a former FBI profiler, can’t quite pin down a firm profile for this perp.
As the days pass suspicion grows that this is all somehow tied up with one particular family - the Montgomerys. And the window for finding Julie alive closes inexorably. This was a tautly plotted story with some interesting twists, nothing terribly original but it was an engaging read nonetheless. Kay was a wonderful advocate for the two traumatised younger children and managed to coax a little light on what transpired from Heather. We also got a few chapters from the POV of the abductor who appeared to be quite delusional. Overall I enjoyed it and will be looking for the next book soon. I do wonder though why authors feel the need to always include the ubiquitous love interest. I guess we’re aiming for romantic suspense although the story would have worked just as well without the romance, or the hope thereof. Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for and advance copy of the book which I have reviewed voluntarily and honestly.
As usual with this author, the story is very well written and the characters are excellent. The book is easy to read even though there is some jumping around, but the plot is a little too crazy to be believable.
When Detective Kay Sharp goes to a murder scene in the midst of torrential rain she finds a mother brutally murdered, and her young child alive and by her side. Upstairs she finds the middle child, hiding and holding a phone., obviously traumatized. Detective Sharp with the help of her handsome partner and romantic interest, continues to find clues to what becomes a more and more complicated murder. Her partner is called to another seemingly unrelated murder. But is it? Neighbors have seen some things and the elderly neighbor provides clues, or is it just hallucinations and imaginings from her dementia? At stake is the life of the oldest daughter, missing since the murder of her mother. Why is she missing? It is a race against time and the weather, money, and influence, I found this to be a very entertaining mystery. It is the first of the series that I have read and look forward to reading more from Leslie Wolfe. Thanks to #TheAngelCreekGirls(DetectiveKaySharpBook3)#NetGalle for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Detective Kay Sharp is back with another case!!
The third book of the Kay Sharp series, the story first starts with a woman Cheryl Coleman, anxiously waiting for her daughter Julie to come as she was preparing to leave the town that night. But when a man arrived at her place, she shouts for Heather to call the police as the man had come to take Julie away...
I only have one word to say about this book--WOW! Honestly, I felt like I was watching some sort of action packed movie where I was refusing to turn off the movie and get so hooked into the movie as to what is going to happen next! Too many suspects and too many twists and turns that make my head all muddled up and what a fast paced thriller book this is! So unputdownable and craving to read more and the ending was unexpected! As usual, Kay Sharp is my favorite character and I do like the slow romance developing between Kay and Elliot! The writing was so good that the author did a good job drawing the reader to the story! It was really good and I am looking forward to read the fourth book!
This was truly a roller coaster ride filled with unexpected twists and turns you wouldn't expect--worth five stars!
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.
This was a good detective procedural story. It had a few twists I wasn’t expecting. I enjoyed the book and look forward to more in this series.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the early copy
I love the Kay Sharp books by Leslie Wolfe and The Angel Creek Girls is the third in the series. Kay is called to the scene of a murder of a mother and the possible kidnapping of her teenage daughter. Kay is in a race against time to find out who is responsible for the murder and finding the young girl before it’s too late, especially since there may be a link between this crime and other missing girls in the area. This was a great book from start till finish, can’t wait for the next book in this series. Thank you Netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
In her new role as a Detective with the Mount Chester police department, Kay brings her experience as a former FBI agent and her psychological skills as a profiler. Having moved back to her hometown and living with her brother, Kay hardly has time to settle in before she is called to the scene of a murder and kidnapping. A widow has been killed in her home, and her teenager daughter is missing. What kind of kidnapper leaves behind two potential witnesses in the two younger daughters -- one is too young to be much help, and the other is in shock and Kay's efforts at hypnotism bear very few helpful clues. Meanwhile, Elliot (Kay's partner and possible romantic interest) is put on another case -- the murder of a John Doe found in a ditch along the road. As Kay chases down ghosts and mountain lore, their two cases suddenly intersect, and the race is on to save the kidnapped girl and solve two murders. It's an exciting plot with twists and turns that lead to an unexpected outcome. Now, we wait to see if Elliot and Kay will have the opportunity to give their romance a chance.
Wow what a read and the setting was prefect , just want I needed on this stormy day , a thriller that give me the creeps and had me setting on the edge of my set, If I had to choose between the three books in this series I would have to say that by far this one is my favorite. Its eerily dark and gives your that bump in the night feeling where you just want to check all of your doors and windows to make so their locked and add to that with a touch of small town beliefs about a boogeyman and you have the perfect story. And as your reading , you start to wounder is there anything to the boogeyman story or is it just a why to scare your kids. And how does that come to play when you have a murder and a disappearance.
This eerily dark, yet gripping complex mystery will grab you from the start and continue to twist and turn till the last page. I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Leslie Wolfe. This was the first I have read the author but found the writing to be engaging and the characters well developed. Detective Kay Sharp, a former FBI profiler has come home to Mount Chester. She is feisty, smart, rebellious at times and determined to solve the killing of Cheryl Coleman, a single mother who was killed in front of her three children. Each child is affected differently by the murder and Kay want to both protect them and find the killer of their mother. The killer keeps you on edge and at times I wasn’t sure where this storyline was headed. I enjoyed how the story played out, characters along the way added some sweet moments such as the moments of yearning between Detective Kay and her partner Elliot. The medical examiner was a hoot, very atypical but still a delightful character. This mystery involves themes of family, deeply held beliefs, heartache and determination. A very good mystery I would highly recommend.
This is the third book in this series. I have not read the first two books but will definitely be finding them. This book is full of twists and turns and lots of action and I really enjoyed this book. I also liked the characters and plot line
