The Liar Next Door is a twisty domestic suspense novel about seemingly ordinary people who are new neighbors. The story is told in the points of view of three women, with chapters set in both current day and the past. Once I got into the rhythm of the story I was easily able to follow along, and was anxious to learn how the women's lives impact each other.
The story is well constructed, with a tightly woven plot that keeps us mostly inside the mind of each woman, until, finally, at the three-quarter mark, we begin to understand their motivations. I would have liked a bit more action around mid-point to up the ante of suspense--a stabbing, a gunshot, a burglary or whatever, but all was revealed in the last quarter of the book.
I enjoyed reading The Liar Next Door and will look for future releases by Nicola Marsh. Many thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for providing an ARC to read and review. *NetGalley Top Reviewer*
There should be a warning label on this book- Don't start reading unless you have a chunk of time!!!
We meet three women who love in a small community in Brooklyn. Each chapter is told from a different woman’s perspective. Oh my goodness! I felt like I was on a roller coaster with all the twists and turns. And I keep changing my opinion on who I could trust. Trust me, you won’t want to put this down!!
I would like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
I think this would be a good book for those starting out with domestic suspense. There was quite a bit of repetition, and I'm not a fan of the "I have a secret no one knows, but they will soon" thing that ran rampant here. It would've packed more of a punch if the POV I'm referring to didn't constantly talk about it. It was a fairly predictable ending, with several little twists and turns, but none of the characters were likable so I wasn't too invested in their endings.
Another new author to me and another one I’m so glad I’ve discovered.
Franky lives a picture-perfect existence in her brownstone house with her husband Andre and little girl Luna. However, although she presents an ideal life on her popular lifestyle vlog, things aren’t quite as perfect as her viewers are led to believe. When two new neighbours, Celeste and Saylor move into the neighbourhood with their husbands, Franky welcomes them with open arms and hopes for two new friends but what are their secrets, and can Franky really trust either of them?
What a twisty tale, EVERYONE had secrets!!! I really enjoyed hearing the story from all the three ladies and I also really liked hearing about them through each other’s eyes. I was intrigued pretty early on in the story, which is always good. The last portion of the book was very intense as everything suddenly started to slot into place, but I loved it and read it really fast.
I definitely will be reading more from Nicola Marsh. I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers. You won’t regret reading this one!
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Nicola Marsh for my advanced reading copy. Due out 23rd August 2021.
I should have known something was wrong from the beginning. She seemed perfect in so many ways: she floated through the baby shower, a warm smile on her face, chatting to strangers with ease. At first I thought it was sweet that she offered to help me, that she made an effort to get to know us, that she brought over games and knew Luna's favourite foods,,,, I had no idea that I couldn't trust another mother.
Three different women who live next door to each other, who all have secrets they'd like to keep hidden. Frankie, Celeste and Saylor are all neighbours in a close knit community. Frankie is a social media star, Celeste is a single mother running from her past, and Saylor who is pregnant with her first child.
The story is told from the three women's perspectives in alternating chapters. I couldn't take to any off the characters but I couldn't stop reading the book either. We get revelations from the beginning. The secrets are well interconnected. I liked how this story unfolded.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #NicolaMarsh for my ARC of #TheLiarNextDoor in exchange for an honest review.
Hello Everyone!
Firs of all thanks to Netgalley for a advanced copy for an honest review.
I must day that The Liar Next Door is one of those books that keeps you thinking about the story hours later that you finished the book.
I really like how the story developed and how you are discovering the life and the secrets of all the principal characters.
Also, you have the differents perspectives of the story, its reminded me about Desesperate housewives and how the story change depending in the character.
The story is about 3 women and their husbands. Frankie, Saylor and Celeste.
The first one is a vlogger who lives for her family and her succesful blog about parrenting. Frankie looks perfect and her stories and the real life but you will be discoveringall her secrecst the last one as shocking as the first one.
Celeste is a mom who you will think that all of her does is good will, but it is?And finally Saylor other women who started to live in the neighborhood and she is pregnanta and she keeps telling she has a very bad secret but you will discovered only at the end.
Was a good book, good narrative, good characters and excellent story and secrets 100% recommended you don't want to miss.
The Liar Next Door is 300+ pages of exposition that keeps repeating over and over, chapter after chapter, the same information. The story is told from the POV of three women, their version told in alternating chapters. They each repeat their thoughts, their plan, their mission, and parts of their backstory at every turn. It was almost like each chapter was a Previously on... and it never goes anywhere significant. If you take away the repetition, this is a hundred page (at best) rough draft of a potentially interesting story.
Reading the first couple chapters, I thought I was going to be in love with this story, but I quickly became irritated by the constant telling and very little showing. The characters are one-dimensional, and quite honestly whiny jerks who were impossible to relate to on any level. The further I read, the more aggravating it became.
I forced myself to continue reading to see how it ended, but there was nothing gripping or impressive about any of it beyond the first chapter or two. It was predictable, flat, and unrealistic up to the very end.
I honestly had to look and see if perhaps this was the author's first book, but to my surprise she's written many. The writing is amateur and, frankly, juvenile. I'm not a fan of writing negative reviews, but someone has to point out the obvious here.
I do appreciate Bookouture and #NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review The Liar Next Door, and I'm sorry to have to relay such tragic feedback, but I have to be truthful--this was not a good book. It was the start of a good idea for a book.
3 neighbours all with a secret but how are they connected? Lies can hurt so.any and what will the consequences be when truths are revealed.?
This is a well written book about 3 women thrown together by the or homes but also there are secrets tieing them together that need to be revealed.
My only gripe was I didn't really connect to any of the main characters
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC of The Liar Next Door. I had not read anything by Nicola Marsh before and truly enjoyed her writing and the pace of this novel. The book goes from different perspectives of 3 women: Frankie, Celeste, and Saylor living in one small neighborhood. Primarily with Frankie's story leading the way to how everyone and their spouses are connected and theirs were not accidental meetings. Things are not always as they seem with especially the ending you don't see coming. With just enough red herrings to keep you guessing this book will take you on a ride. I would definitely recommend.
This was a really great psychological thriller that had me guessing till the end. I enjoyed each of the characters and they were interesting enough for me to not want to put this book down. A close knit community where everyone has something to hide, but who is the real threat?
There were a couple of twists that also took me by surprise which I enjoyed.
Overall I rate this book 4.25 stars and would definitely recommend for a light quick psychological thriller.
This book had everything I love, a psychological thriller, deceit, betrayal and lies all wrapped up in one. Yet I felt like something was missing and I still can’t quite put my finger on what that is.
The story is written from the perspective of three different women, and also has Frankie throw in a past section as well as present. I loved that and felt like I learned so much about Frankie that all connected. However about half way through this story I was able to predict many of the twists and turns. Although not all of them, I still enjoyed reading how they played out. I felt as though the chapters were more snapshots and quick which kept me engaged and allowed me to say oh just one more section it’s only a few pages. Needless to say I devoured this book rather quickly with this method. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. Thank you netgalley and publisher for the advanced read!
Have you ever read a book where you just cannot figure out how everything links together?
I have really enjoyed The Liar Next Door. Thanks to NetGalley & Nicola Marsh
The book centres around three women who live next door to each other. Which is the liar? It turns out, each individual has their own misgivings and a part to play, some worse than others. I liked Frankie’s character, I thought she was vibrant and honest for the most part of the plot. Celeste, I knew there was more to her past and had my suspicions which did prove to be true! Saylors story was a welcome addition to the overall plot however this started off very intriguing but turned out to be quite disappointing. The book could have done without Saylors POV entirely, but it was interesting to learn how she linked in.
I found the structure of the book good and easy to follow, there is a little bit of going back in time which was also a welcome addition. I must say that the writer has used a lot of long winded terminology in areas which in all honesty I’ve had to use google dictionary for! I’m not saying this is a negative as such but I would say I have quite a wide vocabulary and am a teacher, I would be concerned it may put some readers off. It’s okay to just put words on a page without thinking too much about the writing.
As a whole a very good plot, lots of infidelity which does seem a little far fetched but that’s fiction! Hasn’t taken me long to read, I enjoyed the shorter chapters and it was gripping for the majority! Thanks again for the ARC
Keep Nicola Marsh coming! She knows a thing or two about psychological thrillers and “I didn’t see that coming!” 3 women, 2 moms with daughters the same age and a the third is about to be a Mom. Living in this idyllic enclave where the park is central to the houses is a very natural place to meet others especially if you have children. That’s why it’s so important for Skykar, Mother to be to hold hers and her husbands gender reveal party there. Not to mention inviting all the new neighbours gives them a great chance to check every one else out. Seems like everyone is busy doing just that! Watching conversations, question hung motives, nursing old hurts and possibly being justified for having done all of the above!
When does your past collide with your future? And are the couple of secrets you had hoped to keep buried forever truly stay buried? A wild ride full of plot twists and reverting from the past to the present we soon learn that not everyone is who we thought they were. Tense, gritty and the a-ha moment I almost missed because it was so deftly written into the story. A sense of community with your neighbours can be a good thing, but it can also be deadly!
Special thanks to. Netgalley and Bookoutre for another fabulous ARC!
I quite enjoyed this book constantly not knowing who the traitor in the neighbourhood was and the author kept you guessing throughout. The little extra twist at the end was unexpected. This story highlights no one is who you think they are and appearances can be very deceptive. An enjoyable suspense filled book.
This book was brilliant had me up all night reading it
It was a scandal
The baby had been taken away and I know. Who has done it
Does she ever gets her back
I had an arc
I wish to express my thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this psychological thriller in return for an honest review. The author, Nicola Marsh, proves that she can write a complex, readable, puzzling story. I realize I am in the minority here, as it wasn't working for me, although many readers rated it highly. The plot centers around 3 women, and their stories are told in alternate chapters. The two married women are concerned about their relationships with their husbands, feeling boredom, lack of excitement, or trust. They and the single mother all obsess over past lovers and ex-husbands. This gives us several male characters preoccupying the women's thoughts and whose names must be sorted out to avoid confusion.
All the characters have secrets they are withholding from those closest to them. There are lies of omission and commission. I did not find any of the characters particularly likable. In this small upscale community, there was adultery, one-night stands, deceptions, greed, questionable paternity, confusing name changes, lingering resentments, rages, and blackmail. There are multiple shocking twists and reveals. Many motives, actions, and emotions seemed to me to be implausible and over the top, which dulled the surprise and suspense. I felt less would have been more effective. I regret I failed to become emotionally invested in the character's tangled lives.
The story was brought to an intense and satisfactory conclusion. I think many fans of twisty, psychological mysteries will enjoy this book and should not be deterred by my misgivings. It just didn't keep me engaged. 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.
Though not as dark as I like my twisty thrillers, this was still an enjoyable read. I got through it in 2 sittings as the writing was very easy to speed through, with quick chapters to keep you going.
I was constantly changing my views on whether characters were 'good' or 'bad' so it was hard to figure out exactly where everyone stood and who to trust, which I liked.
I guessed, partly, what was going on but it didn't stop me from quickly turning those pages towards the end to find out how it all came together.
I would give it 3.5 but rounded up as it WAS a quick read that I wanted to get back to every time I put it down.
This book has no heroes. It is told by three POV,s. Frankie, Celeste and Salyor. They all reside in the same community with some coming recently. The plot centers around the secrets and lies all three tell. I found the book an interesting read with many twists and turns. I recommend this book for family drama readers.
The Liar Next Door had me hooked right from the publishers description. I’m a huge fan of domestic suspense/thrillers, and this did not disappoint. Thank you to Bookouture and Nicola Marsh for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Told from mainly three different POV’s, Frankie, Celeste, and Saylor, each woman has secrets on the threshold waiting to come out. Three women with their own sordid stories to tell, all intertwined in a web of deceit.
Wow, wow, WOW! Could not put this book down! I was so engrossed from the first chapter as it immediately pulled me in, determined to see what happened next. While there were a few parts of the story that I did feel it was a tiny bit predictable, there were many more times I sat back and was floored with the outcome. I don’t mind a small amount of predictability in stories though, I felt connected to the author as I discovered my assumptions were right!
Nicola Marsh has a writing style that just kept the storylines flowing with tidbits of answers to questions that pop up at just the right moments. She has a knack for incorporating the element of surprise for sure! I now have a new favorite author!
I wanted to like this book. However I found it too slow, not enough happened for me .I usually like seeing a story from different points of view, but even this didn't work for me here it just don't think this book was the sort of book I am drawn into. Sorry.
